The controversial criminologist takes on one last case
"Compared with most television investigators, Fitz is still the king" -- The New York Times
ROBBIE COLTRANE (Ocean's Twelve, the Harry Potter films) reprises his role as the abrasive, arrogant, and utterly brilliant psychologist, Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald, in this feature-length, final installment of the award-winning crime series. After living as an ex-pat for a decade, Fitz returns to England for his daughter's wedding and finds his homeland profoundly changed in the aftermath of 9/11 and the Iraq war. Against the wishes of his family, Fitz joins the police in hunting for a murderer with no apparent motive.
A New Terror deftly depicts a world held hostage to violence, both personal and political. It blares from omnipresent TV screens, crops up in casual conversations, and casts its shadow on everyday life. As always, Fitz's insights into this world might edify you or infuriate you. But they will never fail to fascinate.
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE Cracker: Behind-the-Scenes, a 45-minute retrospective documentary featuring interviews with Robbie Coltrane, Jimmy McGovern, Barbara Flynn, Chris Eccleston and other members of the cast and creative team.
Customer Reviews:
New Terror -- Terrible!.......2007-08-18
I am a huge fan of the original run of "Crackers" from the 1990s, but this "New Terror" is just terrible. It is nothing more than an excuse for the writers to make a political statement against Bush, Blair, and the Iraq War. I'm not necessarily a proponent of the above; I just want my Cracker to be good old gritty Brit noir, not a preachy polemic about geopolitics.
Fitz returns!.......2007-08-13
Robbie Coltrane is back in this thriller...he's older, fatter, and even more restless and risks his family, the admiration of his son, and his time with his new granddaughter, to "get on" with an intriguing case. Someone is killing people by breaking their necks. In the meantime you really get into the head of the killer, who is a vulnerable, sympathetic character and you gain a different perspective on the IRA problem. All the regulars appear in this full-length episode and I was thrilled to get back to the series; so well-acted, each and every character perfectly cast, as always. Poor Mrs. Fitz; she can't get her husband to hang around and just play the grandfather! I hope they will make more Cracker episodes..!

Films are Great but FOX Went Cheap!!!!.......2007-09-12
The cases in this box set are the SLIM LINE cases and are just not as cool as the reg sized keep cases. Slim Line cases are fine for a TV show but not for collecting movies. Films 5 Stars The oustide package cover art is fine also, just the use of SLIM LINE cases has to be stopped. Warner Bros has caught on that fans don't like being cheated. and these cases just don't make me happy at all.
A collection of Price's better horror films plus extra features.......2007-07-26
This set will contain seven of Vincent Price's better horror films of the 1960's and 1970's and even includes a bonus disc of extra features. MGM is no Warner Home Video when it comes to DVD boxed sets and extra features, but this one shows progress in that direction. The following are the details on the included films and extra features.
Abominable Dr. Phibes: Price gives a campy performance in one of the few horror films which successfully and intentionally joins comedy and horror. Joseph Cotten and Terry-Thomas are just two of the victims on whom Price seeks vengeance for his disfigurement and his wife's death. The Art Deco sets give the film a stylish look and the British deadpan delivery of many of the jokes helps immensely.
Dr. Phibes Rises Again: The disfigured madman (Price) is back as he and his deceased wife go boating down the Underground River of the Dead in this sequel to The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Once again, everybody is in it for the laughs including the set designer.
Tales of Terror - Three stories adapted very loosely from the work of Edgar Allen Poe - "Morella", "The Black Cat" and "The (Facts in the) Case of M. Valdemar", each roughly one half-hour in length.
Twice Told Tales - This is a compilation of three short films based on Nathaniel Hawthorne works - Heidegger's Experiment, Rappaccini's Daughter and The House of Seven Gables. In both this film and "Tales of Terror", the idea is not so much to be true to the original story, as it is to use the foundation of the story to the advantage of Cormen's ability to make scary movies and in Price's ability to star in them.
Theater of Blood: An entertaining horror film about a demented Shakespearean actor (Price) who takes a bloody revenge against the eight theatre critics who gave his performances bad reviews. To me this one of Price's often forgotten and most underrated films. He really hams it up and it works perfectly.
Madhouse: Price stars as an actor who returns to the screen to reprise his role as a killer a few years after his wife-to-be was decapitated by a killer nobody caught. Price is good as always, but it just seems a little tired and more like a tribute to his past and better films.
Witchfinder General (aka Conqueror Worm): In 17th-century England during the struggle between Cromwell and the Crown, Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Price) and his associates seek out and persecute those thought to practice sorcery as well as anyone else who incurs their wrath. When Hopkins executes the priest of a small town for being a warlock, he and his partner find themselves the target of a young soldier who leaves his post in Cromwell's army to hunt down and kill the pair. The movie captures this period in English history very well for a low-budget production. Price is at his menacing, sadistic best without the intentional camp that he injects in so many of his other horror films.
An extras disc will contain a documentary ("Vincent Price: Renaissance Man") and two featurettes ("The Art of Fear" and "Working with Vincent Price"). The set will be available on September 11th.

Book your return flight to the Satellite of Love and join Joel, Mike and the 'bots for another fearful foursome of flops in this collection of episodes from the Peabody Award-winning series Mystery Science Theater 3000. First up on Volume 11's menu of muck is Season Two's Ring of Terror, with Joel, Crow and Tom Servo riffing furiously on a half-baked story of fraternity pranks gone wrong; it's partnered with another interminable episode of the Bela Lugosi serial The Phantom Creeps. Next is Season Four's The Indestructible Man, in which Joel performs a frightening imitation of the movie's star, Lon Chaney Jr.; an episode of The Undersea Kingdom is also celebrated with a parade that goes predictably awry. Season Four's Tormented features headless ghosts, a guilt-ridden Richard Carlson, and Joel stuck in a ventilation shaft, plus a day-rescuing round of happy thoughts. And last but not least is Season Ten's Horrors of Spider Island, a German-made monster movie about dancers on a deserted island and a giant spider than transforms their manager into a hideous creature; Mike also undergoes a man-to-spider switcheroo after getting trapped in the 'bots' homemade spider web. For veteran MiSTies and pop culture fanatics, it doesn't get funnier than this.
Extras include theatrical trailers for all of the films save Ring of Terror; a brief interview with Tormented director Bert I. Gordon, his daughter Susan, and star Joseph Turkel, and wrap-arounds from the syndicated Mystery Science Hour, with Mike Nelson as an obsequious Jack Perkins, are also included. However, the best supplement is the second MST3K Jukebox, which compiles some of the show's funniest and most memorable musical numbers, including "Sidehackin',"Joel and the 'bots' garage-rock tribute to The Sidehackers and the incredible "Patrick Swayze Christmas" from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. --Paul Gaita
Customer Reviews:
Too much Joel..........2007-09-07
I have bought EVERY one in the series, and as long as they are made I will buy them. After having time to watch the difference between Mike leading the show and Joel, Joel is boring. Mike was a writer and then stared as the lead. Mike's shows just seem to be a great deal funnier than the ones with Joel. There are too many episodes in this pack with Joel. I have watched the first 2 and the movies and the comedy are a bit boring. But I will keep watching and buying one of my all time favorite shows.
Mystery Science #11.......2007-09-04
Quick delivery-good and/or new condition. Haven't watch the whole DVD, but so far-it's very funny
Four more with Joel, Mike and the 'Bots.......2007-09-03
Some movies are so bad, they're good. Other movies are just plain bad. Fortunately, there is Mystery Science Theater 3000 that can sweeten these bitter pills.
In Volume 11 of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, we get another four awful movies. The absolute clunker in the bunch is the first one, Ring of Terror, a story of a fraternity prank gone horribly wrong. As is typically the case, it isn't as much the plot that is the problem as the execution: with bad writing, acting, direction and effects, this supposed tale of terror is around as scary as a rock. This film comes with an episode of the serial, The Phantom Creeps.
The Indestructible Man has Lon Chaney, Jr., who towards the end of his career was in a lot of bad movies. In this one, he is an executed convict who is revived by well-meaning scientists and rampages against the partners who set him up. This one also has a serial episode, in this case an episode of Undersea Kingdom.
Tormented has Richard Carlson as a pianist who is responsible for the death of an ex-lover. Facing blackmail is bad enough, but he also has to deal with the woman's ghost. Or is it all his imagination? This one is directed by Bert I. Gordon, a semi-legendary B-movie director also responsible for movies like Village of the Giants and Attack of the Puppet People.
Finally, there is Horrors of Spider Island, a poorly dubbed movie about some dancers shipwrecked on an island with a single semi-large spider who dies rather early on. It does, however, transform a person into some sort of monster who preys on the others. Once again, it's not the premise but the execution that ruins this movie.
All the movies are given plenty of dead-on, funny commentary by humans Mike and Joel and the robot pals Crow and Tom Servo. The idea of quipping wittily over a bad movie is hardly original to Mystery Science Theater, but this show turned it into an art. If you are a fan of Mystery Science Theater, this is another collection worth watching.
Love it!.......2007-09-02
I cannot get enough of MST3K! Oh, bring on those "B," "C," or worse movies! How can anyone NOT appreciate the humor?
I have all the boxed sets and the single releases. Love 'em! Even my sons like them (of course, they can't tell their friends that they do).
Looking forward to the release of Vol 12!!!!!!!!!
Solid collection of episodes from TV's greatest show.......2007-08-31
This is certainly one of the better collections of MST3K. Each of the four episodes is a winner. The Indestructible Man has a nonstop barrage of riffs, the Ring of Terror is great fun for fans of the show, Tormented is a solid episode, and Horrors of Spider island is from season ten when these guys had perfected the art of riffing. The extras are icing on the cake--especially a glimpse into MST history with the MST3K Hour sketches. Enjoy the old-fashioned cheesy horror movies, laugh out loud until you can hardly breathe, and watch in groups to enhance the effect.

Sleeper Cell: American Terror is so consistently excellent that the series' cancellation seems woefully premature. Citing budgetary costs and the popularity of newer shows (like Weeds), executives at Showtime ended the series after this superb second season, which benefits from its limited 8-episode run by maintaining a riveting combination of brisk pacing, intelligent plotting, and an admirably meaningful effort to explore the true nature of Muslim faith. For posterity, both seasons of Sleeper Cell will gain lasting value for their astute and illuminating depiction of Islamic devotion on both sides of the battle against radical Islamic terrorism. In this regard, American Terror is even better than the first season, as it deepens our understanding of the religious and philosophical differences between undercover FBI agent Darwyn Al-Sayeed (Michael Ealy) and Farik (Oded Fehr), the radical Islamic terrorist (with connections to Al-Qaeda) who continues to mastermind attacks on American soil. As American Terror begins, Farik is enduring brutal torture at the hands of his American captors while Darwyn, still undercover, is pretending to lead a new sleeper cell consisting of a former Latino gang member (Kevin Alejandro) who became an extremist in prison; a closeted gay Iraqi ex-patriot (Omid Abtahi) raised in London; and a Dutch nanny (Thekla Rueten) with personal reasons for hating America.
While Farik's former right-hand-man Ilija (Henri Lubatti) struggles in vain to return to a quiet, normal life, American Terror takes all of its characters into darker, more dangerous territory, and heightened realism gives the series even greater emotional impact as unexpected tragedies befall several supporting characters. While Ealy and Fehr continue to anchor the series with their finely nuanced performances, these episodes ultimately lead to a powerful finale that, in many respects, returns Darwyn to where he began--with potentially greater threats looming in his future. While Fox TV's 24 favors nonstop action and increasingly implausible plotting, Sleeper Cell: American Terror presents a frighteningly authentic scenario that honors Islam while demonstrating how it's been perverted by radicals with evil intentions. Because the second season has a cliffhanger ending that may never be resolved, it's a pity the series wasn't allowed to continue, and the DVD extras offer minimal compensation: They consist of "Infiltrating the Final Cell," an interesting interview between Ealy and two of Sleeper Cell's FBI consultants; "The Enemy Within" (a first-season recap); and "Farik's Story," a pointless 90-minute assembly of nearly all of Oded Fehr's scenes from American Terror. Why bother, when it's all better viewed in the context of the episodes? --Jeff Shannon
Description
In SLEEPER CELL: AMERICAN TERROR, the Muslim undercover FBI agent, Darwyn (Michael Ealy), discovers that another terrorist cell in Southern California is planning a catastrophic attack that will be more successful than the last attempt. Meanwhile, Farik escapes out of the country and directs another terrorist operation, beginning a parallel storyline between Southern California and the Middle East.

Unrelentingly good.......2007-08-19
I watched season one of Sleeper Cell, and while I liked it I never really clicked with the show. The pace never grabbed me, the character's situations were interesting but not enough to be exciting.
Then came season two. While it is shorter, only eight episodes this time, it makes up for it with thrilling events and an amazing pace.
I'm not sure how early in the season the producers knew they weren't coming back for a third year, but I do think it helped in making season two brilliant. In combination with the fact that they had season one to set up the characters, season two acts as if it has nothing to lose, and just delivers blow after blow after blow. From the first episode to the last minute of the final episode, it keeps on surprising and shocking viewers in ways that it didn't even attempt in season one.
It reminded me of 24 in its first season, when that show had the ability to surprise. But it has more substance, integrity and finesse than 24 has ever had. If you like thrilling TV with 3D characters, then you have to buy this box set.
OK Show but could have been a great show .......2007-06-18
I just finished watching Sleeper Cell - American terror and it was OK it had the potential to be a great show, but the story with one of the characters changed everything. I will admit the ending was great, it left you to wonder whats going to happen next. I would have gave this show 5 stars and suggest to everyone to buy the dvd, but I would suggest not buying this dvd because they decided to have a gay character on the show and having that character on the show was pointless, and for everyone who saw the first season and enjoyed every moment when you watch the second season, beware your gonna see some scenes that your not gonna like.
Sleeper Cell - American Terror - The Complete Second Season.......2007-05-12
At first i wasnt sure about this show in the first season of the show. My brother had recommended it because he said it was really good. As the episodes went on i realized that to. This show in many ways is even better then 24 just because of the reality of the issues... It shows the struggle inside islam between the true islam of peace and love (the fbi agent muslim trying to stop them), and the extremists who claim they are muslims ( the terrorists), and the struggle with the image of islam in the west, as well as what our country is going through at the moment. In the end the plot, actors, and everything else are great and keep you interested until the very end. I cant wait for the next season.
A bad ending to an excellent series.......2007-05-12
Honestly, the first season kept me up everynight after work untill I finished a disk but this season was very, very disapointing. Homosexuality is not something I'm real uncomfortable with but the needlessness of the multiple encounters was very disturbing. Also, the finale was a big let down. Should have left something open for fans instead of.....Well, you'll see if you actually want to see it. I wish I hadn't bought it. Good Luck.
This is a good fix for 24 fans.......2007-05-07
Don't get me wrong, sleeper cell is no 24. However, if you like 24, Alias and Prison Break type shows, this is a good one to buy. My husband and I really prefer to purchase the DVD, as opposesd to watching the show each week. It makes for a fun rainy weekend marathon. Plus, who wants to wait an entire week, when there is a cliff hanger. Speaking of cliff hangers, you might also like The Shield. Sleeper Cell is good terrorist fun.

I won't buy this version.......2007-08-30
MGM did a great job on "Creature" which I just purchased. I will wait and buy "Beast" when a decent production is released on DVD. This won't see any of my dollars.
This dvd version I rated 3 stars because it in cut and not the entire movie.......2007-08-23
I really loved this movie in its original TV mini series form which was played in two days when it was first shown on TV. This dvd shows that is it 120 mins, which means it is the direct transfer from the vhs version and has some really good scenes cut out of it. Like when William Petersen's character Whip Dalton gets drunk. They also cut out most of the relationship between Whip Dalton and Lt. Kathryn Marcus played by Karen Sillas which added to the story to make it well rounded. Thus, my rating of 3 stars instead of 5 stars. It is more choppy and you can see something is missing from the story.
**** To Those who distrabute and own the rights to the movie please release the UNCUT version for those of us who enjoy a well rounded story. ****
Thank you. I hope this review helps.
Lots of Adventure.......2007-08-16
I can't beleive this movie was released so under the radar. I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD for ages.
It doen't even have a picture on this website and there was no effort made to premote it; even with "CSI'S" William Petersen as the main character.
I love this movie or mini series as it may be. There is so much action and adventure in it and it is just a lot of fun.
I live in Australia where the film was made and still have to wait for the DVD to come out here but American's should totally come on board and Buy this DVD.
There is so much suspense and so much great acting, you'll be hanging till the last moment.
The idea of the beast is so exciting and you'll never look at the ocean the same way again.
The Beast is the coolest Tv mini-series ever!

This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in
School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in Nacho Libre he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, Nacho Libre just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. --Daniel Vancini
Description
Jack Black is at his comic best as Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery that can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnacion.
Customer Reviews:
Outrageously Funny & Much Better Than I Expected.......2007-09-13
I make no apologies for liking this movie. It seemed everyone at the video store, from the manager on down, all thought otherwise....but I took a shot, rented it, and laughed my butt off watching this film. Now I own it.
Jack Black was hilarious as the monk-pro wrestling wannabe "Nacho." The premise alone is humorous: an overweight Mexican monk who would rather be a famous wrestler. It doesn't say much for his spirituality, but it made for a lot of laughs.
It's all outrageous, absurd humor, not meant to do anything but: evoke laughs, at any cost......just harmless fun. Detractors should keep that in mind. Black's tag-team partner, "Esquelito" (Hector Jimenez) was just as funny as the main star, if not funnier. None of these "monks" in here were realistic figures, especially the nun: "Sister Encarcion." (Ana de la Reguera ). No offense, but only in the movies are nuns this beautiful. Wow, Reguera looked like a cross between Penelope Cruz and a young Winona Ryder.
Although it's a comedy, the story had some nice touches of sentimentality and humanity, namely: "Nacho's" attitude adjustment, his genuine compassion for orphaned kids that the Brothers and Sisters took care of, and his basic desire to do good despite a very weak commitment to "vows." Maybe that's why there are so many critics of this film: it wasn't mean-edged and nasty enough to satisfy them.
Also, if you appreciate bold, beautiful colors, you'll find this an attractive movie. There was a feast of brilliant colors shown. I was impressed how much effort was made to make this movie look nice in addition to getting laughs.
Give me a break, this movie is HILARIOUS.......2007-09-04
I do not understand how people are not finding this movie to be one of the funniest ever. I actually had no high hopes for this movie therefore, took forever to see, and was greatly suprised at how funny it is. As well, the more I watch it, the funnier it gets. There are so many little details in this movie that get my stomach hurting laughing so hard. The soundtrack to this movie is exceptional as well. Nacho's song to Ramses 'at the party' gets me EVERY time. Just hilarious.
NaCHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! "It's the best!".......2007-08-11
Jack Black in stretchy pants - need I say more? You either "get" this movie or you don't. I get it big time. Laughed my asterisk off. Could watch it weekly. Should have been nominated for an Oscar, but life just isn't that fair.
Nacho funny Nacho.......2007-07-11
We absolutely LOVED this movie. I thought the accent was perfect, and my kids ages 8 and 4 along with my husband and I could not stop laughing. We are about to buy the movie for our collection.
Effective in what it sets out to do, just not over the top hilarious..........2007-07-06
`Nacho Libre' was referred to us by some friends and so, despite not caring to much for seeing it, my wife and I decided to give it a try. Immediately I saw comparisons to `Napoleon Dynamite' and realized that this may just be funny. Gladly I can say that the money was well spent. `Nacho Libre' succeeds in making me laugh, and I'm sure it will bring quite a few laughs to each and every viewer. It's far from perfect and will not be remembered as comic genius, but then again it's a small Nickelodeon film with dry humor and fart jokes so it's not to be expected to reign supreme. It delivers what it sets out to deliver, easy laughs. Jack Black is not the funniest guy around, but he knows how to poke fun at himself in order to rouse a laugh, and here he has plenty of playing field with his pudgy physic and boyishly immature charm.
The film focuses on Ignacio, a cook in a monastery who dreams of being a pro wrestler. He desires to help the orphans whom he feeds and all in all is a decent kind hearted man. When the beautiful nun Sister Encaracion moves into the monastery he begins to try and woo her but he runs into opposition and inside competition. After being attacked by a street urchin by the name of Esqueleto he decides to team up with this man in order to tag-team wrestle for money. This way he can purchase fresh and tasty food for the orphans and hopefully win the heart of Sister Encaracion.
The acting is decent, what's to be expected from a film of this caliber. It's not supposed to be brilliant acting so do be disappointed when you realize it's not. Jack Black is his usual funny self, if you find him usually funny, but to me it was Hector Jimenez who proved to be best in show. His Esqueleto has the best one liners and he has the physic of a thirteen year old corpse so the physical comedy is golden. Ana de la Reguera is pretty much a prop here, she's pretty and that's all they really need her to be, someone we believe Black's character would fall for, but also someone we believe could fall for Black. She works just fine.
The real heart of the laughs here comes from the outrageous wrestling matches. The fighters get crazier and crazier and the moves are as outlandish as they are painful to watch. Black and Jimenez really shine here with their physical comedy and they provide some of the only `laugh out loud' scenes in the film. That's not to say that the film is a waste if not for a few fight scenes, but these scenes are the only scenes, at least for me, that excite a vocal reaction. There are other funny scenes but they are laughs I can keep to myself. The script could have been a little tighter maybe, but when you sit back and see the style of comedy they were going for it actually works well. If you're a fan of the humor used in `Napoleon Dynamite' then you'll enjoy `Nacho Libre' and if you're a fan of Jack Black then I'm sure you've already added this family comedy to your DVD library.

what a really good re-make..........2007-04-22
this was actually a really good re-make of the original. i'm pretty sure you will recognize the black guy from the original movie. they stay pretty much to the same script as the original but you'll want to see it anyway just to see what else happens.
if you are a "BABYLON 5" fan like i am you might recognize on of the cast members in the movie. i haven't seen it in quite sometime and i just recently ordered it from amazon. i'm looking forward to seeing it again.
"They are coming to get you, BARBARA!!"... the movie that started all the zombie movies ever to come. if you want to see also another good one, the idea for this movie came from another movie with Vincent Price called "THE LAST MAN ON EARTH".
it also deserves a viewing if you are a ZOMBIE fan like me! for anyone who hasn't seen even the original movie of "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" where have you been?? rotting in a coffin or something??
enjoy!

A worthy remake that entertained me from start to finish. A solid popcorn movie........2007-04-21
I loved the original movie and this version isn't half-bad. I don't think it's worth commenting on what actually happens in the movie. If you have seen or read about the original Night of the Living Dead you know, more or less, what happens.
It cleans up the visual and audio problems of the original. There is less wooden acting. Let's not forget that the 1969 version was, afterall, made by amateurs. Also, this version has some nice twists to it and there is some subtle humor. What happens to the snaky "Cooper" at the end of the movie will have you roaring with laughter.
What prevents this from being a "great" film is that it follows the original too closely and there are a few moments where the story doesn't seem to unfold naturally because it's trying to hard to be consistent with the 1969 one. But, like I say, some things happen slightly differently. Perhaps the biggest change from the original is that "Barbara" is no longer a helpless female in need of protection from the men. By the film's end, she reminded me of the heroine Sigorney Weaver from the Alien series. She's a natural zombie killer!
I'm giving it 4 and 1/2 stars only because there's no way it deserves to be on par with the original which gets 5 stars. Still, it's a very entertaining movie and I highly recommend that horror fans get it.
Same Idea, Different "Night" ..........2007-04-09
Romero fans, be prepared for a few radical changes ... hopefully you can view them as reflective of a new era and not as an assault on the 1968 original (that Romero was an executive producer and had a hand in revising the script should help)!!
No longer is Barbara the catatonic, ineffectual "zombie" that she was in the 1968 version: now she has a riffle and a meat tenderizer ... and she knows how to use them BOTH!! Other alterations abound! (I am omitting the juicy stuff so as not to spoil your discovery!!) For instance, as Johnnie (as spelled at IMDB) and Barbara approach the cemetery, it is revealed that the siblings' mother is dead ... not the father. Why is this interesting? As explained in Tony Williams text The Cinema of George A. Romero: Knight of the Living Dead, "[the original deals with] domination and possession on many levels. An unseen mother manipulates Johnny and Barbara into performing a ritual neither of them shows any real feeling for" (22). A curious alteration since it is the focus of much speculation! What does this reveal about the current roles of mothers and fathers?
As a zombie fan, you probably enjoy all the minutia as much as I ... especially when it involves social commentary. Therefore, you will enjoy the commentary on modern "craftsmanship" in this version. When Ben realizes that the old farmhouse is being remodeled, he despairs. Tommy is perplexed until Ben easily puts his fist through the new door ... so poorly made. Only by retrieving the old "ugly" doors can the enclave proper steel themselves against the "zed word." Very clever!! It's a small but fun detail:D And, seriously, hearing the line "Yeah, they're dead, they're all messed up" once again ... well, that's just priceless!!
While all the acting is excellent, Tony Todd is a shining star ... not too many actors could succeed in bringing the original role "new life," but Todd does so with zest. He has easily earned his status as a horror-film icon!! (The "Final Destination," trilogy, the "Candyman" trilogy, "Wishmaster," "X-Files," etc... EPIC ACTOR!!)
A note on a minor coincidence that only a horror-enthusiast can appreciate: at 11:44 minutes watch for Tony Todd (Ben) to emerge from the car with a crow-bar. An extreme close-up of the crow-bar in his hand looks like a giant hook ... a la Tony Todd's role in "Candyman." Yes, I know Rose's "Candyman" was released in 1992 and this was released in 1990 ... like I said, it's just a neat coincidence;)
Watch this film if you love zombies, want to be a zombie, have a friend who is a zombie, or are interested in zombie-rights.

Enjoyable - Just don't take too seriously.......2007-04-04
I suppose it's all been said, but I'll give it a shot. :)
First, the (decidedly amateur) comments:
Having seen all the Romero flicks and enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake, I would have to place this movie somewhere beneath these previous flicks. The makeup effects I can't fault; much better than the original. But, of course, effects do not a great movie make. The acting was all right for the most part, but a bit stilted at times; I think the leading lady was trying too hard to be rough and tough. I much prefer the efforts of someone like Sigourney Weaver, who managed to maintain her character's humanity realistically through the "crisis moments."
Okay, enough bellyaching. All in all, I'm still glad I bought this movie; I freely admit to being a zombie fan, so I guess you should take that into account. I see it as a fond "tip of the hat" to the master. It follows, for the most part, the tried and true formula of the original script; a true remake, I think, rather than a "reimagining," which puts it in a different class than the new "Dawn." I guess this is mostly what I'd expect Romero to try out if he had it in mind to "do it over again." I just think he'd do it better, that's all.
If you like the "Dead" films, do try it out. At the very least, it will inspire you to revisit the classic and see it in a new way. Just try not to over-analyze it; not much social commentary here beyond the most basic.
Thanks for reading my ramblings. ;)

IT'S A SCREAM!!!.......2007-09-03
Hollywood seems forever hell-bent on producing contenders for the dubious honor of Most Unnecessary Sequel Ever. But despite awesome new entries like Speed 2: Cruise Control and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, the crown continues to belong to Jaws III.
Whereas the unnecessary sequel Jaws II still had Chief Brody, Jaws III features the now grown-up Brody boys (Dennis Quaid and John Putch) at a Sea World theme park in Florida, far from Amity and Roy Scheider. Quaid is about to unveil a mammoth, man-made lagoon attraction, which, you guessed it, will quickly become a shark-feeding station. Now meet the rest of the cast: Louis Gossett Jr., Lea Thompson, Simon MacCorkindale and, as Quaid's girlfriend, Bess Armstrong. Needless to say, you'll be rooting for the shark from the first frame.
Just as you're thinking that the underwater picnic can't begin soon enough, a shark gobbles up a lone diver working on the gate between the lagoon and the open sea. When the victim fails to show up at home, his angry girlfriend is certain he's with another woman--"I tell you, the man's trash!"---but Quaid and "senior biologist" Armstrong fear something worse and set out in a submarine to investigate. Two pet dolphins follow along, apparently with the intention of proving that dolphins are smarter than people, for as Quaid and Armstrong leave the sub to swim around, the dolphins warn them of impending danger by shaking their heads back and forth. Sure enough, a shark suddenly lunges for them. Lacking fingers to shake at the foolish humans, the two dolphins rush over to Quaid and Armstrong and offer them rides to safety. For the second time, the shark fails to get them. Why? For one thing, it resembles a giant inflatable Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon and moves about as fast. To become this shark's dinner you'd practically have to swim into its mouth and throw yourself down its throat.
Faced with the alarming prospect of a killer shark in an underwater theme park, Armstrong has an idea: trap the beast and turn it into an attraction. "This is crazy!" roars Quaid--the very words he failed to say to his agent after reading this script. Naturally, the troop goes hunting for the shark, and, naturally, the shark promptly attacks, but MacCorkindale deters it by conking it on the snout, about which we only say: don't try this at home. Inexplicably, the shark proves easy to capture and becomes an endearing pet. Finding Armstrong petting the shark in the tank, Quaid jealously jumps into the water, saying, "If this is the only way we can be together!" Armstrong primly hands him a plastic bottle with formula for the shark. It's a Jaws III-way. When the park opens to the public, nymphets in hot pants succeed where Quaid and Armstrong have failed--they come upon the shredded torso of the missing diver. Ever the aquatic professional, Quaid takes one look at the remains of his pal and barfs.
Armstrong realizes... well, let her tell it: "Our shark couldn't have killed him--its mother did!" Yes, the captured shark's 35-foot great white mama is fiendishly racing around the lagoon, which is now filled with tasty tourists. After knocking people out of a boat and overturning bathers on a wooden raft, the killer shark simply scratches one person then politely stops. (Is it any wonder this movie was nicknamed Gums?) But things pick up when MacCorkindale cages the mama shark (don't ask) and then neglects to leave the cage himself. This allows for a genuinely laugh-out-loud shot of MacCorkindale's view from inside the shark looking out--a peak moment in sharkcam cinema. The body count begins to go up until the thing you've been waiting for finally happens--Armstrong gets attacked. Alas, Quaid rescues her before she can be safely devoured. Quaid then saves the day by detonating a hand grenade inside the shark--a fitting ending for this legendary bomb.
JAWS 3: It Bites..........2007-07-24
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
Warning- Spoilers Contained Below-- Jaws 3 was the third film in Universal Studios' shark-thriller movie series. The first film, released in 1975, was a pioneering blockbuster directed by Steven Spielberg. He passed on a sequel, and so Jaws 2 was directed by Jeannot Swarc. Generally considered inferior to the first, it nonetheless made a modest profit at the box office in 1978. Five years would pass before another sequel was made--but perhaps it shouldn't have. 1983 saw a brief revival of 3-D films at the box-office, with minimal results. It was likely presumed that a 3-D Jaws would have more 'bite' to offer filmgoers. It didn't work.
This time (directed by Joe Alves), the action moves from the New England town of Amity to a coastal Florida Sea World amusement park. The film damages its thematic credibility early on by prematurely aging the Brody boys, sons of Chief Brody of the first two Jaws films. Now the 30-ish Mike (played by Dennis Quaid in his 80's zenith) is an engineer/designer of underwater tunnel systems, with Sean college-aged and visiting his big brother for the summer. Bess Armstrong is Kathryn Morgan, the park's head marine biologist and Mike's love interest. Lea Thompson is Kelly, a ski-show performer and Sean's would-be girlfriend.
Louis Gossett, Jr. (who had recently won an Oscar for his role in An Officer and a Gentleman) plays the flamboyant Calvin Bouchard, a New Orleans-reared businessman who has just recently taken over as the manager of the park. Fishy things start to happen when a great white shark apparently mauls an unsuspecting worker near the park's storm drainage tunnels.
Enter Philip FitzRoyce, played by Simon MacCorkindale (TV's "Manimal") an Australian wildlife photographer/hunter who offers to capture the rogue predator. He is successful, and Bouchard orders that the shark be put on display to seize on the publicity. His decision is questioned by Kathryn and Mike, the latter of whom knows all too well that great whites aren't anything to trifle with.
Soon, the shark specimen dies--however, the recently discovered remains of another shark victim indicate that they couldn't have been killed by the shark in custody--this one would have to be much bigger. Shortly afterwards, the park staff (and their clientele) are face to face with the shark's mother--over 30 feet in length and apparently feeling a maternal revenge instinct. From there, shark mayhem starts happening in a major way, as the murderous predator mauls its way through a ski-show exhibition, the bumper boat lagoon, and floods an observation tunnel. The shark is contained only temporarily, setting up the climax where viewers get to see a slow-motion reaction shot from the protagonists as the shark apparently has the presence of mind to charge headlong into an underwater control room to get at those pesky humans.
Quaid is decent enough as a lead and Gossett is always a pleasure to watch, but despite their acting pedigrees this film is still strictly B-grade at best. It is unintentionally humorous that Sea World would lend its brand name to be potentially marred as vulnerable to shark invasion (at least, the coastal locations). Perhaps the show dolphins prominently featured in the film (another real-life park attraction) had something to do with the enticement--though it would have been great if at least one of them were sacrificed to the shark. The special effects here are dated, and rendered muter for the fact that the 3-D effect has been removed. Certain scenes show objects heading straight for the camera (like a hypodermic needle, a crossbow bolt, shattered glass--oh yes, and 'Bruce'). Minus the 3-D effect, unknowing viewers may question the odd choice of angles. Everyone except a Jaws completist should only rent this film.
Revenge of the Creature meets Gorgo.......2007-07-15
What does a studio do when they are out of ideas? Go back to the classics. The plot of this film is basically a combination of 2 old SCI-FI classics.Revenge Of The Creature 1955 and Gorgo 1961.The similarities are as follows:In Revenge Of The Creature the creature is captured and used as an exhibit in a theme park.In Gorgo a dinosaur is captured by a group of fishermen only to discover they have captured a baby and the mother is coming for it.Having said this I think Jaws 3 is a pretty entertaining movie. Not great but certainly better than Jaws 4 which was HORRIBLE!
Another Great Jaws.......2007-07-07
I miss Roy but this is a good one too. I like Dennis in it and Bess does a good job too. This one is a must have in the series of Jaws movies. I have them all and watch it over and over and over.....
Might one day be in 3D for DVD..........2007-05-02
I saw this in the theater at age 12 and again numerous times on video. The main reason that this movie has not been released in a 3D format for home video, is that the movie was released in a polarized 3D format, rather than the old red/green or red/blue format that works on television sets. One lens in the movie glasses was polarized vertically and the other horizontally (a la Universal and Disney theme-park 3D movies). This particular effect is currently impossible to re-create even on HD televisions because of the horizontal scanning that makes the tv images. It could be converted into a red/green format for DVD, but Universal is unlikely to shell out the money for a conversion, which would likely take over a year of labor by an FX team. Also, that's assuming that the Left and Right film masters still exist as seperate films. Even at age 12 in 1983, I was unimpressed by much of the film, one redeeming factor being that the shark was so darn huge [35 ft]. I didn't like the use of stop-motion near the end, something Spielberg avoided at all costs in the original. Holding out for the slim chance of a Red/Green 3D conversion before I buy, as I have all the others on DVD.

An obvious attempt to cash in on the success of Jaws, this 1977 thriller was also based on a bestseller by Peter Benchley, and it features a memorable performance by Robert Shaw (the doomed shark hunter in Jaws) in one of the last roles of his career. Looking very tanned and healthy, Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset play a young couple enjoying a tropical vacation who discover a glass ampoule while scuba diving off the coast of Bermuda. It takes a seasoned treasure hunter (Shaw) to identify the ampoule as part of a valuable shipment of World War II morphine lost at sea, coincidentally, atop the even greater treasure of a sunken Spanish galleon. Thus begins a race for drugs and treasure pitting Nolte, Bisset, and Shaw against a ruthless drug lord (Louis Gossett Jr.) who'll do anything--even resort to Haitian voodoo--to get what he wants. It's all rather contrived and exploitative (after all, the movie's best known for Bisset's wet T-shirt scuba-dive), but as escapist entertainment goes it's got some exciting highlights including a moray eel that attacks on cue and... well, uh, Jacqueline Bisset in a wet T-shirt. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Drug Drama in Bermuda.......2007-08-05
1977's "The Deep" is a very serviceable movie drama, featuring a solid cast (Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bisset, and Lou Gossett), an exotic location (Bermuda), and a thrilling premise (a hunt for underwater treasure).
The movie opens with an underwater dive by David and Gail (Nolte and Bisset) while on a romantic holiday in Bermuda. Those not distracted by Gail's wet t-shirt will watch the couple discover a ship wreck and various artifacts, including a mysterious glass ampoule. The dive is interupted by Gail's scary encounter with an unknown underwater creature under the wreck.
Back on shore, the couple's effort to trace their small collection of artifacts leads them to two encounters. The first, with legendary Bermudian diver Romer Treece (Robert Shaw), leads to the discovery that they have found a long-sought World War II freighter loaded with glass ampoules of morphine, and that the freighter may be sitting on top of an even older Spanish treasure ship. The second encounter, with Haitain drug dealer Cloche (Lou Gossett) leads to the discovery that Cloche and his gang are prepared to kill to get to the morphine.
The rest of the movie is a suspense-filled chase on land and underwater, as Treece, David, and Gail try to recover the Spanish treasure while staying one step ahead of the Haitians in a complicated game of cross and double-cross. The tension lasts to the final scene, a dramatic fight to the death inside the wreck of the freighter.
This movie is well-recommended as a entertaining underwater thriller, featuring Robert Shaw in one of the last roles of his long career.

OK sure it's not the greatest movie made but it is one fun underwater adventure and as stated my first crush started with Ms. Bisset's wet tee-shirt dive over the opening credits. The memories this one brings back. The underwater photograph is still stunning and the tale of treasure hunters and drug dealers is still very well done.
The copy I have features both the full and wide screen version of the film but little else, but who cares lets go diving!
2 People dive for treasure.......2007-06-17
They find out there 3 sunken ships off the coast of Bermuda. So they ask another man to help them.
Starring Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, Jackie Bissit Great Movie
The Deep.......2007-06-02
I had seen this movie on TV many years ago, and wanted to watch the whole thing. It's not available in video stores. I enjoyed it very much as did my husband, who had never seen it. The movie is based on the book by Peter Benchley who wrote "Jaws". I recall an intro from the TV showing that appears to be missing from the video. It shows the submarine being wrecked off of the coast of Bermuda and a young Romer Treece finding Adam Coffin on the beach. Whatever the movie lacks in substance is made up for in the fine talents of Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bissett, and Louis Gossett, Jr. This was one of the last movies that Robert Shaw made. His early death was a great loss to the movie industry.
A beauty named Bisset..........2006-12-25
The film opens with Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset diving in the waters off Bermuda, exploring a sunken wreck... They soon find themselves drawn into a sea of jeopardy and intrigue involving a cargo of dangerous drugs, a fortune in Spanish treasure, ocean predators and ruthless drug smugglers accompanied by black magic voodoo...
The adventure begins when they discover a strange ampule containing liquid, and a coral-encrusted Spanish medallion near the wreck of a World War II freighter..
Henry Cloche (Lou Gossett), a local underworld figure with a hand of menace, offers to buy the ampule, then changes to unrefined tactics, for he knows that the small glass vessel holds the clue to a rumored cargo of morphine, convertible into a fortune...
As Nolte and Bisset try to discover some light to the mystery, they unite in an alliance with Romer Treece (Robert Shaw), a strong ocean-expert recluse, who wants to punish Cloche whom he believes responsible for the death of his wife...
Motivated by their own personal welfare, the trio dive depths, racing against the ticking time bomb of Cloche's vicious and relentless pressure in an effort to recover the Spanish treasure and to prevent the morphine from falling into his hand... The dramatic events culminate in a final explosion beneath the sea...
If you love to see our quiet photogenic Bisset swimming around half-naked in a breathtaking wet-T-shirt, well, don't hesitate to join our innocent heroes in their efforts to wrest the treasure from the bottom of the ocean in their dangerous underwater battle in the deep...

Dan Curtis, the creator and producer of such out-of-the-ordinary TV classics as the willfully offbeat gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the proto-X-Files series The Night Stalker, remains best known for the Zuni fetish doll that terrorizes Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror. The wild-eyed doll, with its snapping jaws and screeching yells, borders on camp, yet its relentless attacks and single-minded, homicidal drive make it an absolutely terrifying figure in the climactic chapter of this trilogy of short films based on stories by Richard Matheson. In the first story, "Julie," Karen Black plays a mousy college professor blackmailed by an obsessed student, and in "Millicent and Therese" she plays sisters consumed with an intense hatred of one another that comes to a head when their father dies. Both of these films conclude with Twilight Zone-ish twists and are more clever than gripping, kept alive mostly by Black's gleefully theatrical performances. With "Amelia," however, Black delivers an almost solo show, playing against the famous Zuni fetish doll, a wooden statue that comes to life when the a protective chain slips off the figure and releases the evil spirit. Curtis turns her apartment into a claustrophobic cage trapping the increasingly hysterical woman as the unstoppable figure hacks at her legs with a kitchen knife and chomps down on her arms and neck with the relentless intensity of a bulldog. It's still a classic of small-screen horror. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Legendary producer / director Dan Curtis (DARK SHADOWS, THE NIGHT STALKER) teams up with writers Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE TWILIGHT ZONE) and William F. Nolan (LOGAN'S RUN, BURNT OFFERINGS) to present three tales of horrific suspense in this made-for-television anthology that also showcases the tremendous acting talent of Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST), who plays no less than four distinct roles. In "Julie," an aggressive college student seduces and ultimately blackmails his seemingly shy English professor. In "Millicent and Therese," two polar-opposite sisters become increasingly hell-bent on the undoing of one another. And in "Amelia," a woman falls prey to a murderous Zuni fetish doll.

trilogy of terror.......2007-08-31
one of the best 70s made for tv movies you will ever see what a scary treat
Unforgettable Terror.......2007-08-30
As long as I live I will not forget the image of the Zuni doll that came to life and attacked Karen Black in this series of short stories. The other episodes in this set are certainly worth watching and show Black's range of talent. But the images of the doll and what transpires in the final moments of the movie will haunt you forever. I highly recommend this DVD if you enjoy classic horror movies.
Great classic movie.......2007-07-12
This movie was great when I saw it decades ago and it's still great. There's now a sequel but I don't think that one's on DVD yet. It's a horror trilogy using the same actress in each but playing a different character in different stories in each so don't expect a connection between any of them, there isn't supposed to be one, just three horror stories. The remake is similar but I don't recall if all 3 stories are the sequels to the ones on the original DVD (since I only cared about my favorite movie, which happens to be depicted on the cover). That particular story is about a voodoo type doll that comes to life if it's chain/belt falls off. The sequel DOES continue THAT story line.
Tour-de-force for Karen Black........2007-06-23
A fondly remembered cult classic televison movie produced in 1975. A must have for fans of good story telling and of course admirers of the excellent Karen Black. The audio commentary is both informative and entertaining and the featurettes with Karen and Richard Matheson are top-knotch. Fantastic print.
Trilogy of Terror is classic stuff.......2007-06-01
