Adolescence is an emotionally stormy time for kids, but it's especially so for Shane (Josh Hutcherson), a teenager being raised by single firefighter father Connor (Bruce Greenwood). Add the recent death of Shane's fire-captain uncle (Connor's brother) in the line of duty and the pending closure of their neighborhood "Dogpatch" fire station, and both Shane's propensity for skipping school and brooding in his room and his father's obsession with work seem easily explainable. When a mutt called Dewey, really a very spoiled superstar dog named Rexxx who's been presumed dead after a parachuting stunt gone wrong, turns up in a burning building and is rescued by the Dogpatch crew, Connor puts Shane in charge of caring for the dog and finding its owner. Shane and Dewey clash immediately and Shane is extremely resentful toward both the dog and his father. However, Dewey's special talents (like skateboarding and trampoline jumping), combined with his good fire-fighting instincts, soon win the admiration and affection of Shane and the entire Dogpatch crew. A series of mysterious fires causes Shane and Connor to begin to really communicate and reconnect, but those fires also threaten their very lives. At the same time, Dewey's former owner discovers Dewey's true identity and demands the return of his superstar companion. An engaging dog story that explores the difficulties of growing up and dealing with personal tragedy, Firehouse Dog is a fun family film that's rated PG due to some mildly crude humor (think potty jokes), language, and action peril. --Tami Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good movie-I would not take real young children to it though...........2007-09-12

Director: Todd Holland.
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Bruce Greenwood, Steven Culp, Bill Nunn.
Old-fashioned family film - which is a good and a bad thing. Good in that it's a wholesome, good-natured kids movie; bad in that the kids are used to something much more these days.
When Rex becomes the firehouse mascot, it keeps the fire fighters' morale high as their station is threatened with closure. Okay, so it might rely on canine bodily function gags to get most of the laughs (Rex snores, farts, burps and poos in the stew), but Firehouse Dog is not entirely a comedy. There's a sizable subplot that deals with mysterious arson.

4 out of 5 stars Hot Mutt.......2007-09-02

This is a good old fashioned family movie about a boy and a dog, and of course, like all shaggy dog tales, the mutt is the star. Celebrity dog Rexxx (note the x's) chucks in his glamorous poodle-filled life to become a firehouse dog, the only fringe benefits being that he can chase the fire-engine and investigate a lot of hydrants.

He adopts a young boy named Shane, who is rather unwilling at first, but after some aerial acrobatics, a few search and rescues and a lot of canine flatulence, Shane finally gets around to appreciating Rexxx, even though he mistakenly believes his name to be Dewey. "Dewey" soon rises to the rank of mascot, and is duly appreciated by the humans, especially the inhabitants of the Dogpatch Fire Station, who although friendly enough, don't seem to be the sharpest tools in the shed.

There are two other stories filling out the movie, one being the relationship between Shane and his firefighter father, and the other being the mystery of the curiously contagious conflagrations in the Dogpatch area.

Corny and cheesy in places, but never whiny, this is a movie you can watch with small kids (your teenagers may be otherwise occupied), but as you will see, the star of this movie is undoubtedly the hot mutt.

5 out of 5 stars Firehouse Dog (The Irish Terrier "Dare Devil").......2007-09-02

This is a great family movie about an irish terrier. Also, I own an irish terrier, and they are beautiful dogs, but need a lot of training initially, as they have a mind of their own. PLEASE do not buy one of these dogs because they are cute, unless you are willing to give it a LIFETIME committment.

One of the best Family films I have seen. You don't see many fit to watch anymore, but this one is tops

5 out of 5 stars Firehouse Dog.......2007-08-26

It's a very good movie. A movie the family can watch together. I enjoyed it just as much as my grandkids. A Dad, a Son, a dog with a little humor and a little drama. What more do you need.

In paying simple tribute to firefighters, Ladder 49 gets to the heart of those who risk their lives for a living. Director Jay Russell brought similar sincerity to his memorable family favorite My Dog Skip, and despite the banalities of an ultra-conventional screenplay by Lewis Colick, Ladder 49 generates so much goodwill toward its Baltimore firemen that you may find yourself unexpectedly overcome with emotional appreciation for guys like Jack (Joaquin Phoenix), a firefighter whose career, courtship, marriage, and fatherhood are viewed in flashback as he struggles to survive in the present-day framing scenes, cut off from his fellow firemen in the fiery guts of a collapsing 20-floor building. There are no surprises in the familiar scenes of male bonding, dangerous rescues, injury and death, and the supportive concern of Jack's wife (Jacinda Barrett), but by focusing on the simple integrity of Jack's personal and professional commitment, the movie gives Phoenix a showcase for unselfish virtue, while John Travolta provides dignified support as Jack's mentor and devoted firehouse captain. Ladder 49 is routine in most respects, but it's a much-deserved valentine to working-class heroes. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Manly Film with Romance and Respect.......2007-08-23

I have taken an interest in firefighers every since they did their all to save the victims of 9-11, only to be betrayed by murderer Rudy Gulliani, with Larry Silverstein, the avaricous Jew, and Dick Cheney, the naked amoral thief, as the other principle actors.

Firefights are God's gift to mankind. They are the good guys. It literally brings tears to my eyes to contemplate the evidence of one surviving firefighter from 9-11, to wit, that bombs were exploding BELOW him as he made his way up toward the fires from the airplanes.

Rudy Gulliani, called "scoop and dump" Gulliani by the firefighters of New York, who rioted over his treasonous agility in destroying the crime scene and covering up the world's greatest insurance scam, $7 billion for Larry Silverstein, Rudy Gulliani, Dick Cheney, and the two unethical witless insurance company executives who thought we would notice.

This movie is about honest Americans. I hope, from the heart, that Gulliani, Cheney, and Silversttein hang one day, after a legal trial. Firefighters: salt of the earth. Gulliani, Silverstein, and Cheney: the traitors, the liars, the scum of the Earth.

3 out of 5 stars A film about why men run into burning buildings........2007-08-02

You can just tell that this movie has oodles of good intention oozing from every pore, and taken as a whole, it does work as a tribute to the noble profession of firefighter. However, the story arc covers no new ground, and cannot really be described in any way as multilayered - what you see is what you get. Having said that, the director treats these predictable scenes in a sensitive way that involves you more than you might expect.
What you do get, is Joachin Phoenix' character injured and trapped in a large burning building, and as he waits for his rescue, we see his life unfold through flashbacks to key events, starting from when he first walks into the fire station as a probationary fire officer. Told just that about the movie, you can probably guess where it goes... boy meets girl, boy marries girl, boy has first kid, boy has second kid, boy has bad things happen to colleagues, boy wonders if he is in the right job considering he now has family, boy realizes he loves his job and stays. It's not particularly clever, and yet, at the end of the movie you will have an appreciation for the life of a fireman in a typical blue collar environment, which was surely the films goal in the first place. John Travolta plays the father figure Captain of the station, adding little depth to the role, but Joachin Phoenix does a passable job, gaining plaudits at least for his willingness to get right into the thick of the action and look the part. Apparently after training he became an honorary member of the firefighting team he trained with, even getting their tattoo.
If anything else raises the film from mediocrity, it is the firefighting scenes. Not just that that they have been created realistically, but that they have a real flavour of realism about them - these smack of realistic situations for firefighters, and not scenes that are chosen purely for dramatic value. The effects thankfully shy away from cgi, and the sound mix helps add to a feeling of being `inside' the fire. Best of all, the movie does not rely on these scenes to keep your interest, but they become part of the character drama.
Interestingly, in the extras the deleted scenes do add some value - one plot line in particular which has one of the firefighters dealing with the loss of his brother through sinking into a spiral of drinking, shows both the emotional and mental strain of the job and the toll it takes, as well as the camaraderie of the firefighters that help him get through it. Otherwise, the extras cover predictable ground, making of, tribute to firefighters etc. Some of the scenes showing the cast going through firefighting school are moderately interesting.
All in all, a modest success, but one that somehow you can't help feeling should have had more to it, given the talent involved. What it does achieve, is tackling not an action movie, but a sensitive character study, and why a man will run into a burning building, when everyone else is coming out.

2 out of 5 stars "The material I had to work with".......2007-07-11

"Ladder 49" is a disappointingly mediocre movie. The premise is dynamite, but its execution is routine.

It's hard to say exactly why the film doesn't work. It may be because Joaquin Phoenix's performance, while good, is not great; or because the actors playing the firefighters fail to cohere memorably into an ensemble; or because the musical score is not epic or heroic enough. What emotional impact the film does have comes largely from the editing and the way events in the main character's life gradually build toward his rendezvous with destiny.

Firefighters, police officers and military personnel are our civilization's greatest heroes. "Ladder 49" has its heart in the right place, but ultimately fails to connect profoundly enough with viewers to be a fitting tribute to the firefighting profession.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT job at making children MORE aware and LESS afraid..........2007-01-09

Not sure why another reviewer only gave this 1 star! Both my 2-year old and 3-year old love this DVD. It's a great way to teach little Elmo Lovers about fire safety and to help them become LESS fearful. Yes, it does show Elmo afraid because a fire in Hooper's store (all they show is smoke coming from the back room due to a small grease fire). He's three years old, of course he's scared! BUT, that's the whole point of the DVD. After the fire, Elmo is invited to and visits the fire station where he talks to and learns about fire fighters, gets a tour of the fire station and learns what to do in case of a fire, and by the end of the DVD he's not scared anymore. It shows that fires don't need to be a scary thing as long as you know what to do. Has catchy songs that teach fire safety, and Elmo does a great job in showing other children that they don't need to be afraid if they know what to do. I think it does a GREAT job at teaching little ones fire safety!

5 out of 5 stars Elmo Visits Firehouse.......2007-01-04

What is better than Firemen and Elmo for a DVD of learning and fun. A big hit with our grandchildren.

4 out of 5 stars helps children feel less afraid.......2006-03-13

My daughter who is a huge Elmo fan enjoyed this DVD. She was very sympathetic when Elmo was afraid, but now points out every fire truck, tells me why the firefighters wear their boots, hat and jacket, and can stop, duck and go.

5 out of 5 stars Great video.......2006-02-25

My kids age 2 and 5 love this video. They both want to practice fire safety now and are much less scared. It is a good platform to jumpstart a very important topic.

The premise of The Guys is simple: A fire captain (Anthony LaPaglia), who lost eight firemen in the fall of the World Trade Center, asks a journalist (Sigourney Weaver) to help him compose eulogies for these men. It's only a week after the attack; their bodies haven't yet been found, but the families are holding services. The writer cajoles the sometimes inarticulate and plain-spoken captain into talking about the men--who range from the captain's best friend to a newcomer he'd only know a few weeks--until she's gleaned enough to piece together a tribute. Originally a play by Anne Nelson, the movie captures much of the texture of New York through montages woven into the storyline; but the piece lives or dies by the performances, and both Weaver and LaPaglia give subdued and unfancy but carefully wrought performances that make the most of this potent material. --Bret Fetzer

Great movie! As a New Yorker, this movie really hit home. It isn't nearly as sad as I thought it might be. It actually has many cute scenes and celebrates the lives of the firemen that perished on 9/11, not concentrating on their deaths. I highly recommend this movie. Anthony LaPaglia was fantastic!

This film offers a realistic view of the grief of a man who loses his comrades, men for whom he was responsible. It offers a realistic picture of a relationship that develops as he tells the story of his comrades. A very good movie for a male discussion group.

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally Healing.......2005-06-17

Anne Nelson's play wonderfully captured on film runs the gamut of emotions. Sigourney Weaver as a journalist helping out a fire captain (Anthony LaPaglia) write eulogies for eight different men from his ladder is poignant, funny and eventually heartbreakingly real. The initially awkwardness of the two meeting is overcome by personal anecdotes and touching stories each share to bring about the final product which is to give each fallen hero his accurate due. Weaver and LaPaglia are perfect in their portrayals as two people trying to help each other in a horrific and emotionally draining period which commands them to bring out the best of each man's life. It is essentially a love story. The pain each character feels when discussing each man individually is a rarity in films and this one gets it right. This film acts as a healer for all affected by 9/11.

5 out of 5 stars Fitting Tribute.......2005-01-01

This is a very touching and moving film and a fitting tribute to the many heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 9/11 attack on America. The acting is as it should be, conveying bits and pieces of so many lost lives for the viewer to reflect upon.

This should by no means be considered entertainment, but rather a sincere tribute and thank you to those who gave their lives!

5 out of 5 stars The Guys.......2004-12-29

This movie is meticulous, captivating, and a real tear jerker.
Watch Anthony Lapaglia's eyes. You can feel the emotional depth of being lost and helpless; confused (not being able to really comprehend the why behind the act), and the immenseness of the loss resulting from the event. Sigourney Weaver is quietly compassionate, maneuvering through the confusion of feelings to find the personalities of the missing comrades. It's beautifully done and Sigourney Weaver and Anthony Lapaglia were perfect choices for the roles.

2 out of 5 stars Too short & all repeat releases!.......2007-04-14

ALL of these cartoons have been released on DVD in Disney Treasures sets, so no reason to get this.

Orphan's Benefit (1934) - already on "Mickey Mouse in B&W volume 1"
Farmyard Symphony (1938) - already on "Silly Symphonies volume 1"
Mickey's Grand Opera (1936) - already on "Mickey Mouse in Color volume 1"
How to Dance (1953) - already on "The Complete Goofy"
Donald's Dilemma (1947) - to be released on "Chronological Donald volume 3" on December 11, 2007.
Music Land (1935) - already on "Silly Symphonies volume 1"
Woodland Café (1937) - already on "Silly Symphonies volume 1"
Pluto's Blue Note (1947) - already on "The Complete Pluto volume 2"

5 out of 5 stars Great Cartoons.......2006-03-31

Alot of us don't have the Treasures set. I've seen everyone of these shorts, and they're a great collection! If you don't have the treasures set, this DVD is worth its money!

3 out of 5 stars DECENT SHORTS BUT NOT NEW.......2005-05-20

As the other reviewer mentioned many of these shorts are on the various Disney Treasures collections so if you own those then you'll want to avoid this eight short feature collection. The eight shorts on this hour-long DVD are all music themed and while they don't represent the best Disney shorts they are fairly decent.

"Mickey's Grand Opera" is from 1936

"Music Land" is a Silly Symphony from 1935 that doesn't feature any Disney Characters.

"Orphan's Benefit" is from 1941 and has Mickey, Donald, and others putting on a show for orphan kids.

"Farmyard Symphony" from 1938 is another Silly Symphony without benefit of Mickey or any of the other stable of characters. It's a symphony set to the sounds of the barnyard animals...

"Pluto's Blue Note" is from 1947 and probably the best short on this DVD. Pluto finds he can use his tail as a phonograph.

"How to Dance" In the 1950's, Disney made a series of "how to" shorts featuring goofy demonstrating various activities. They were all pretty good. This one from 1953 has Goofy showing off various dance syles.

"woodland Cafe" One more Silly Symphony from 1937.

"Donald's Dilemma" 1947 - After getting hit in the head with a flower pot, Donald thinks he's a famous crooner and no longer recognizes Daisy...until she clocks him with another pot.

The fact that three of the shorts are Silly Symphonies without Disney characters is going to really limit the appeal of this DVD to kids in my mind and since some of the other shorts can be found in the Treasures collections it won't have much appeal to Disney collectors either so I'm not so sure about this one.

1 out of 5 stars Treasure fans Beware!.......2005-05-19

Many of these shorts on this DVD (as well as the other DVD's in this series) have been on the treasures allready so i recomend passing on these DVD's besides all the dirt and the bad restoration you'll see on the cartoons!

Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Classic '80's Comedy..........2007-05-24

They don't make them like this anymore. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson bring "Ghostbusters" to paranormal comedic heights. The movie starts with an ominous tone, but travels straight into comedy with one of the best comedy scenes ever with Bill Murray testing two university students for "the effects of negative reenforcement on ESP ability". The comedy (and the supernatural suprises) grow from there.

It's a fine example of comedy with a heart, with a soul. The kinds of comedy I wish was still around in movies today.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Gremlins.......2007-04-19

I first saw this when I was about 7 to ten year of age and I have loved it since. They also have three epsiodes from the tv series for sale on line uou can get the these episodes all together at once for about 21 to 40 dollars with the shiping fee include maybe less if you get them used version of them and don't get them in like mint condition or better cause they charge more the better condition it's in. I bought this together with the sequel ghostbuster II yesterday at blockbuster for $18 with the tax included. Unfortunately I didn't realize until today that blockbuster ripped me of they charge me about 50% more than what amazon was charging. To be more precise amazon was only charging 8 to 12 dollars for the two of them together if you got them in decent conditon block buster charged me about 18$ dollars because they were in new condition and were not preused. This movie was a classic and had phonimal special effects for its time back in the 1980s when computer special effects were still somewhat primative compared to what they are in the newer movies like the Terbitha remake. You should watch this if you really like these actor especially Rick Moransis who unfoprtunately recently dieded unfortuantely do to and overdose to some kind of drug or something like that. A word of warning though this movie has some mild violence and scary images in it and some what heavy amount cursing compared to the amount that usually is modern pg rated movies. As a result of the following this movie might not be appropriate or maybe questionable to kids under the age of 12 depending on whhat the parents or guardianns thiks is appropriate for there age. If you like this I also recommend Gremlins I and II and the Criters quadriology if you are 13 years of age or older.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect comedy hit.......2007-03-13

I find the movie highly entertaining, but what really knocks my socks off is how the script has many lines that incorporate the metaphysics of modern life better than any reality-based attempt to describe what life is like. The slim chance of success that "crossing the streams" produces, facing a gigantic "Stay Puft" marshmellow man, a building in New York City that is spook central, the "Get him out of here" line applied to a fruitbasket from the EPA, and the frightful technology of capturing ghosts after the first attempt in the New York City Public Library was so scary and the main character got slimed in the second attempt in a New York City hotel, the messes that everything created: all of it is still so apt.

5 out of 5 stars Should have been Best Movie in 1984!.......2007-01-05

Great film. It got ripped off by not winning the oscar for best film of 1984. It was the best film that year.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem. A Truly Special Movie........2006-12-08

1984's "Ghostbusters" is not only one of the greatest comedies, but one of the best movies ever made. Armed with an amazing cast of comedic talents, a solid storyline, and great special effects, "Ghostbusters" is a truly magical movie.

Three scientists, Pete Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), who specialize in paranormal activity, get fired from their jobs at a renowned New York college. Desparate for some dough, they start their own business, Ghostbusters. At firs, business runs a little slow, until a New York apartment dweller named Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) discovers her refrigerator is a portal to a spiritual dimension ruled by the evil demon Zule. With news of this, their business takes off, as does a relationship with Dr. Venkman and Dana. However, when a sleazy social inspector named Walter Peck challenges the legal matters of their business, the Ghostbusters soon find their business out of operation, and it couldn't be at a worse time, as both Dana and her bumbling neighbor Louis Tully (the always wonderful Rick Moranis) have been possessed by these demons, who are now planning to destroy New York. It is up to the Ghostbusters to stop these dastardly demons before it's too late.

This is is an unforgettable movie. The performances, especially Murray's are wonderful. Never has any actor (with the exception of Weaver in the first two "Alien" movies) been better. The story and the special effects are dazzling, and this is definitely a film that belongs in your dvd collection.
