High concept and high class, An American Classic is a worthy visual complement to Tony Bennett's 2006 duets CD of the same name. The notion of pairing veteran artists with a variety of singing partners is nothing new, of course (cf. B.B. King and Frank Sinatra, among many others), but this one goes a step further; under the direction of Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) and his team, Bennett appears in what's described as a "docu-musical," faithfully re-creating a variety of performance settings much like the ones in which the 80-year-old singer has appeared in the course of his long, fruitful career. Thus we find him on a concert stage with Barbra Streisand ("Smile"), in a nightclub with John Legend (a swinging, uptempo "Sing, You Sinners"), in the studio with k.d. lang and trumpeter Chris Botti ("Because of You"), on a '60s-style TV variety show with Diana Krall (a classy "The Best is Yet to Come"), in Vegas with Elton John ("Rags To Riches") and then Michael Buble (an amusing "Just in Time"), and so forth, on up to Bennett's triumphant shot on MTV Unplugged with Christina Aguilera (no jazz singer, but she keeps most of her excesses in check on "Steppin' Out") and the inevitable "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" (Bennett with piano accompaniment only). It's all very respectful, well staged, and entertainingly choreographed, but if this 45-minute cavalcade has a significant shortcoming, it's that it mostly lacks fire and spontaneity; the only time Bennett cuts loose is during an audio-only "I Got Rhythm" heard under the various DVD menus. Viewers may also be disappointed that Sting, Bono, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, the Dixie Chicks, and several others on the CD do not appear here, and it's a notable drag that not a single one of the composers or arrangers of the material is identified. Great production, great choreography, great performances!.......2007-05-12

Before I purchased this item, I thought I would only enjoy a few tracks by my favorite artists. But, it kept me enthralled all through the playing time. Personally, I bought this one because I like Barbra Streisand. But, wow, all the duet performances are so great. I've watched it twice now (in only 2 weeks). And I think I'll still enjoy it some more times. I think this DVD can be played at your home parties for the enjoyment of your valued guests.

First, I give this four starts and not five only for the brevity of the program. But 40-odd minutes still offer many opportunities to appreciate what this 80 year-old can do! The creative program was directed by Rob Marshall and includes choreography (Tony even dances a bit) and visuals that live up to his Chicago accomplishments. Being something of a purist, I have to say I was initially skeptical of the "guest list." Each musician rises to the challenge, and the songs alternate between touching and flashy. Tony shines in each tune, an effect heightened by a full orchestra and elaborate sets. The film quality is excellent and vivid as is the sound recording. I found myself watching and re-watching sections over and over again -- you will, too. The extra features (including the "making of" documentary) are very interesting, too. This project was clearly a work of love for all involved. What a fine way to celebrate Tony's career.

Great Buy.......2007-03-26

I had caught the tail end of this concert when it was on tv. I enjoyed what I saw and heard, and It was definately what I had expected. Very good singing by Toney B's guest and the incomperable Toney B was excellent as always!!!!!!!! He still has his pipes at 80!!!!! Totally blew me away!!!! The concert is more of a mock tv show. Though I did like this format, it lacked the enthusiasm of those old dean martin tv shows. The director should have had more interaction with Tony and his guest singers. It would have been fun to see him talking about jazz music, with the modern day crooner, Michael Buble , for instance. All in all this is a great dvd definately worth buying, with the performances with Christina Agulara and Michael Buble standing out!!!!

cancel the CHEEZY dancers -you don't need em + won't miss em.......2007-03-20

I am giving four stars because I dont waste my time writing negative reviews- so a four star review means I have to diss something. My stomach was turning watching the cheezy and totally gross dance scenes- feathered fans and top hats and canes- PUHLEEZE !! None of these vocals are enhanced in any way buy these gyrating midriffs with the same old sorry meaningless cliched moves and the horrific non flattering outfits- they look like pole dancers in an atlantic city off the beaten path porn palace. Have I made my case?
Other than that the songs chosen were interesting, everyone does a masterful job singing - but I couldn't watch this tape again. These 2006 scenes just makes one all the more nostalgic for the neon lights of the old time dimly lit smoky jazz clubs when musical craft was king- I bet tony wishes that this style was still reigning as well

Everyone knows that this gal can out sing her contemperaries, but what they may not know is that she is an amazing stage performer with great charisma and energy. When I think about Christina Aguilera I think the "Special One" the most underated artist out now. People get so lost and focused on her image that they forget about her VOICE and writing capability. I have to compare these two. When Mariah Carey first came out she was flawless. Excellent writing ability and Flawless voice. Now when she sings live her voice dryes out on the second verse and she looks like she struggling all the time and people hail her as the best female vocalist out.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! sorry you used to be now you have been dethroned and Christina took the crown. If you put Christina and Mariah singing live Christina would blow her right off the mic. If you watch this dvd Christina is the only artist who sounds better live than her studio recordings...who does that??? Her voice is powerful, strong, clear and flawless. This dvd should have came with a stamp because she stamped herself the best female vocalist out right now with her performances.

When she first came out she told an interviewer that she wanted to be one of the greats and now she accomplished that. Well done ChristinA!!

Big stuff from the massive lady.......2006-01-08

I desperately wanted to give this 4 or even 5 stars but I was ever so slightly disappointed by a few things. Christina is well known for her big voice. She has got to be way up there with Whitney and Maria and she really blares out these songs with great enthusiasm and power. However, when singing I couldn't help notice her total lack of emotion. There are some great artists out there who really deliver a great deal of emotion when they sing, such a Whitney Houston and Meat Loaf but, unfortunately Christina just isn't one of them. When she was singing `Beautiful' at the end of the show I really expected to see a tear in her eye but to my surprise, at one point she started to laugh and then gave a massive wave to the audience as if to say `look at me' with a gaping smile on her face. Emotion is one of the most important aspects of a live performance in my opinion because it allows the people who are watching and listening to actually feel the song and it takes it to a whole new level.

To my surprise Christina is also an artist that goes off stage every other performance to get ready for the next song. It's ok when you're watching it on DVD because there is no waiting but the people in the audience must have waited longer than she was actually on stage. This is more believable when you see some of the overblown costumes that she wears which must have taken hours to put on and prepare. This makes my respect for Christina go down ever so slightly because I like an artist that goes out onto stage and sings song after song without getting `ready' in between. Overall, however, I did enjoy the show and her voice just absolutely blew me away, so if it is her voice you're after then buy this.

The notion of keyboardist Herbie Hancock working with the likes of Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, and Joss Stone is bound to give jazz purists the willies. But Hancock, like fellow Miles Davis piano alumnus Joe Zawinul, long ago stepped way outside jazz's strict parameters, and with Possibilities, a DVD chronicling the making of his 2005 CD of the same name, his refusal to be pigeonholed has produced some surprising, occasionally extraordinary musical moments. Duets with Aguilera (a typically overwrought version of Leon Russell's "Song for You") and Mayer (less a tune than a funky, studio-conceived jam) may not be among them, but several of these collaborations verge on genuine brilliance, more than making up for the missteps. A few involve re-imaginings of a guest artist's own material (Paul Simon's "I Do It for Your Love" and Sting's "Sister Moon" both benefit from thoroughly new arrangements with heavy African and Latin touches); some focus on pop-jazz standards (Irish singers Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan's touching version of "Don't Explain," most closely associated with Billie Holiday), while others feature newer songs, like Annie Lennox's gorgeous rendition of Paula Cole's "Hush Hush Hush." Unlikely partnerships with Brian Eno, Trey Anastacio, and guitarist Jonny Lang (who joins Stone for U2's "When Love Comes to Town"), as well as Carlos Santana with Angelique Kidjo, yield uneven results but are never less than intriguing; there's also some all-too-brief footage of the classic Davis '60s quintet (with Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams), as well as recent film of Hancock and Shorter in Japan. Hancock, of course, is the glue that holds it all together, and despite his insistence that this is a not a jazz record, a certain jazzy element in his improvisations and harmonizations is both unavoidable and welcome. In the end, the Possibilities DVD is essentially a promo for the CD--if you want to hear complete versions of these songs, you'll have to buy the record. Herbie Hancock is a man who embraces all kinds of people and experiences, an explorer in many cultural and musical fields. This DVD is a good introduction to him and his life, featuring snippets from his early quartet years with legends Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter to his forays into electronic funk with the Headhunters to his most recent collaborations.

Some of these sessions are more successful than others, but all are interesting. He performs with great stars like Annie Lennox, Carlos Santana, and Paul Simon, makes international connections with singers like Angelique Kidjo and composers like Brian Eno, and concludes with a trip to Japan where his spiritual side is revealed. The disc presents many enjoyable and insightful moments in the creative process.

That said, the film is primarily a making-of documentary that doesn't present finished, polished work. It's more of a DVD to rent than to own, serving as an invitation to listen to the Possibilities CD as well as to those recordings produced during Hancock's earlier incarnations.

Get to Know Herbie Hancock.......2007-02-11

As a huge Herbie fan I can say that it was great seeing him work with an interesting cast of charachters in the studio. They are improving together and some great stuff comes out of it. I loved watching the making of Possibilities more than I like the actual album. For me the album is a bit too polished and pop oriented. Plus I don't care for some of the song selections, and I basically got bored with it after a few listens. BUT, to see the making of it was great! I dissagree with another reviewers "perspective" of "tension" in the studio. I found the artists respectfull of each other, and just downright cool.
Then there is the footage of Miles and the 2nd Quintet. I could watch days of just that, but to have it interspersed with Herbie talking about how playing with Miles gave him a template from which to work was fantastic.
I recommend this to all Herbie fans and fans of the interworkings of the studio.
Now I just have to figure out how to get our eleven year old to watch it.

Nice Behind The Scenes Documentary.......2006-10-21

This was really interesting to watch. As a musician and an aspiring producer, I really enjoyed all the studio footage. This "behind the scenes" look at the album was awesome to see.

As the other reviewer pointed out - if you want to see some sort of concert footage with all these songs being performed, this DVD doesn't offer that. This is purely a trip into the studio with Herbie and his guests to see the collaborations unfold.

The only thing that was a bit distracting was the DVD's sour mood somtimes. The four that stand out are:

1) Christina Aguilera's segment - she just doesn't seem to be enjoying herself. I even thought she was being bitchy, but I kept watching and...

2) Jonny Lang seems genuinely honored to meet Herbie and he's telling him so and Herbie quickly walks away talking to somebody else.

3) Herbie's showing his charts to Sting and excitedly talks about the chord progression - Sting looks uninterested and looks away. And

4) The fabulous Raul Midon (CHECK HIM OUT!!!) asks if he can try different things out. They allow him, only for him to be railed with sarcastic comments like, "Well, Herbie doesn't HAVE to solo on his own CD. You just kicked him off his own CD." Or After Raul does his amazing mouth trumpet, "Good thing Miles isn't here, he'd have something to say about this..."

I mean it's like, did Herbie and his people not make the artists feel comfortable? It just seems like the studio sessions weren't always pleasant.
But anyway, you guys probably don't care about that. Back to the point: This is a great invitation into the studio. But if you want concert footage or even complete somgs, skip on this.

Not what I expected.......2006-07-19

I read the only review for this item and ordered it, expecting to see a fantastic display of sound and some of the interaction of these artists with Mr Hancock as they created music, each colaborating to have a unique blend of sounds.
Actually this is only a documentary showing this interaction, and as such is very interesting.
But if you are looking to see an hear the full length videos of these great colaborations you will be disappointed, that is not included in this dvd. Only small samples are there for you to see.
This was a real disapointmet because the quality of video and audio are fantastic.

Excellent Artistry.......2006-04-19

Watch this and be inspired by the awesome Herbie Hancock. The recording sessions are great. The music and the movie flow along like a terrific jazz solo, riffing on all kinds of themes but Herbie brings it together into a whole. Just watching him play on the piano is a treat. If you're not that familiar with this living jazz legend, check this out and you'll admire both the man and his music.

I bought this DVD just some days ago and it amazed me.

Christina gives an entertaining show where she both sings and dances, and doesn't lypsinch at all.

The fast songs are catchy and the low ones are beautifully sung, with strong emotions and the usual powerful voice of Christina.

Christina can sing, Christina can dance, Christina can entertain us, she may not be the bestest artist of our generation, but she is surely underrated and deserves a lot of credits.

Maybe her look and especially her hair were not that good, but well a singer is supposed to sing in the first place and I didn't really care about what she looked like.

This Christmas Special is a must have if you're a Christina fan or if you think shes untalented give it a look to see just how talented she really is.

Not only does Christina sing her hit songs, "Genie in a Bottle," "What a Girl Wants," and "I Turn To You," she also sings some Christmas classics also on her christmas album, My Kind of Christmas.

Christina also sings some songs that aren't on her cds like "Climb Every Mountain," from The Sound of Music, one of Christina's favorite movies. Also included: "Alright Now," and Etta James' "At Last."

The Christmas songs she sings are "Merry Christmas Baby," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and her song "Christmas Time," which is new on her Christmas cd, My Kind of Christmas.

Not only does Christina sing in english but she sings two of her Spanish songs "Contigo En La Distanica," and "Falsas Espernazas."

Christina nails all of the songs on this dvd, its absolutely amazing, defenitely worth a watch and better then her previous dvd Genie Gets Her Wish.

First I must praise Christina for giving such a adrenaline filled show that left all smiling and cheering.
Christina when she started was labeled a pop princess.Guess what she was for a time,but soon she would evolve to a beautiful,soulful singer who was not afraid to let her voice be heard.This concert shows her transformation.
It starts with a beautiful ballad that was inserted in the disney movie Mullan.This song is a reflection of her voice and if you ask me Reflection was the song that led up to her future project of Stripped.It shocked me when the back up dancers suddenly came out on stage when a feel of Arabic music was played to back up Genie in a Bottle.Christina danced a little and sang high vocals.The costume change was awesome!Next was another chart topper Come On Over Baby.Dancing here and there while singing.I was surprised when I heard that instrumental.Christina really danced in this part since she wasn't singing or vocalizing.Then she started rapping the next part.All in all this just a taste of the first three songs.
This DVD is of high quality.It also contains four music videos.Another reason I love this DVD and think all Christina fans should own it is because the diversity of the styles of music Christina likes and performs.Like does pop dance influenced songs that make you wanna dance.Or those blues influenced ballads that show of Christina's vocals.Or the aggresiveness of Alright Now.
All in all this is a must own for any Christina Aguilera fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this dvd is one of the best dvds in my collection. it showcases xtinas first concert lives and features some of her biggest hits from her albums my kind of christmas, christina aguilera and my reflecjo. during the concert there is piano playing, good vocals and dancing and geat outfits. it also has a duet with lil bow wow.

i love christina, but this 'biography' was awful. the pictures were distorted, there was horrible music (not hers), and the 3 people that were talking throughout the entire thing, are nobody's. they have no connection what-so-ever w/ christina, they're just stating their opinions on her. it looked like a home-video to me. what a complete waste of time and money. i didn't want to give any stars either, but there isn't a 'minus stars' choice.

This is an unofficial dvd, its not represented by Christina or her management.

Theres no music by Christina! Why? This is not an official dvd, Christina's music is copyrighted so they cannot include any.

They show a video of her singing live...with no sound! Instead theres instrumental music.

Its not really a biograpghy, its mostly opinions of the couple of people they asked. It was horrible, they had no creative thoughts and repeated themsleves!

The pictures they used were terrible quality and seemed to be played around with and streached out! Even though it says on the dvd box there is rare photos, there are none.

I gave it 2 stars because they did show an interview with Chrisitna talking about her album Stripped. Other then that this documentry is rubbish.

Oh my God! I'm looking for anything less than 1 star...Anyone who has seen this DVD has got to be soooooo disappointed! I really love Christina (just ask my girlfriend) and to watch this DVD was tooooo much to bare! Five minutes into it and I screamed "I GOT RIPPED OFF"! "WARNING"..."DO NOT BUY THIS DVD"!!! The only thing positive about the ordeal was I didn't purchase it online @ "AMAZON.COM"! :) If I had used my account I would have been forwarned by all you great "AMAZON.COM MEMBERS"...I would have saved a few bucks and shed less tears! It was total torture!!!

I am really a Christina fan but I have no choice on this one other than saying the truth. This is the WORST DVD I have ever bought in my life. I can't encourage anyone to buy this one. I don't really know what Christina was thinking to release this DVD. There is no way I can call this a music video but rather call it a "SLIDE DVD" coz what you should expect to see are just slides about her biography and no music at all. I regret having bought this DVD. I repeat, DON'T BUY THIS ONE!!! This is really discouraging. Anyway if you have nothing to do with your money then you can buy this one. Better buy the Stripped one not this one.

Like Spears (who's conspicuously invoked as both friend and former New Mouseketeer colleague), Aguilera combines a curiously old-fashioned show-biz work ethic with a contemporary persona that intoxicates young teen boys, inspires young girls, and likely triggers mild anxiety attacks for some parents. No father can watch this profile's footage of prepubescent girls wiggling along to the singer's signature hit, "Genie in a Bottle," with its sly entendres ("You've got to rub me the right way...") and not ponder the meaning of innocence in the 21st century. Moms likewise may want to find a hotline to help counsel their daughters on the dangers of blue eyeliner abuse and excessive blow-drying.

However, even jaded boomers and Gen-X ironists may have a hard time ignoring Aguilera's outsized vocal gifts. While it's sobering to hear her cite such "old-timers" as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey as influences, it's beguiling when the 18-year-old gamine, accompanied by her RCA Records executive angel, Ron Fair, leaps into an impromptu performance of the Etta James classic "At Last." A Good Introduction to Christina!.......2005-09-04

I think this is a pretty good introduction to pop star Christina.

It shows her interacting with some fans, dancing to some songs on her debut, and some questions they ask her. You also get to meet her manager and some of the people she works with.

At points shes singing live, a live performance of "Genie in a Bottle" is the opening to this dvd.

This dvd also follows around Christina on some of the things she does on tour.

I recommend you rent it if you're just a fan, but I'd buy it if you're a huge fan.

The wildly popular afternoon video request show hosted by Carson Daly on MTV, a modern American bandstand featuring a live audience, appearances by pop stars, and a crowd of onlookers who clog the sidewalks outside the cable network's Times Square studio, is given both a "best of" and "behind the scenes" treatment in this video. Christina Aguilera appears in the studio to wiggle and lip-sync her way through "Genie in a Bottle," and a few boy bands, including 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, show up to look serious, croon their tunes, and make the young girls in the audience squeal and squirm. Seemingly as a deliberate counterweight to the carefully packaged entertainment that's a mainstay of the show, production personnel appear in interviews to talk about how the live show is spontaneous and often plagued by mistakes, including guests who don't show up on time and audience members whose behavior or language isn't exactly ideal for afternoon television. A remote segment with Limp Bizkit, whose heavily tattooed frontman Fred Durst ends his performance at a beach resort by literally blowing up a boat, seems to have been tagged on the end to counter the sugary quality of earlier performers. This tape could've been so much better. The best parts, in fact they are the only parts you should watch, are the performances by the individual artists and groups. The rest is thoughts from other people and it's very boring. I had to pinch myself to stay awake when I was watching it, and I love TRL. Honestly, even if you love the show, you will probably HATE this video. It is not a masterpiece. It's not a work of art. It's a boring tape that is only redeemed in the performances of the singers that have made the show so popular in the first place. So, please, do not waste your money on this tape.

This video is boring. I love TRL and it just didn't really interest me. The performances were cool, but the whole "behind the scenes" parts were very boring. If you want this video because you love TRL, I would highly recommend not buying it. If you want the performances, then, by all means, get it!

I was expecting a little bit more than what this video ended up offering, they didn't talk or even show Carson that much and most of the time was spent talking to producers and people like that about what they thought of the show. The highlights were the preformances (especially the *NSYNC one that starts the video out ) and the bloopers.
