Same feel as movie version of Love Story.......2007-06-10
If you love the books the movies won't disappoint you. Oliver's Story is very close to the book, and Segal does help write the screenplay.
Oliver's Story is obviosly not as compelling as Love Story, but uncomparable by the subject difference. Oliver does make ammends with his dad which has given him the purpose and meaning he cannot find without Jenny. O'Neal does some great acting! He brings our desperate, searching, Barrett to life.
Oliver's Story.......2007-04-11
This is such a wonderful companion piece to "Love Story". It is great to know that Oliver can move on with his life and grow from his loss.
Love after Love Story.......2006-04-12
Oliver's Story is a must-see sequel for all those Love Story fans who cried when Jenny died. There is serious truth to the fact that only another great love can heal the hurt and loss of an equally great love. There is something to love being the great healer of our hearts. The only problem is that Oliver is still haunted by the ghost of Jenny ... and it is an obstacle to new love. Although widowed he is still trapped by memories which is a barrier to what is available in the land of the living. Another great reason to watch this is there is a reconciliation between Oliver and his father. So the plot has closure on alot of levels. The classically beautiful Candice Bergen is a great opposite against the equally handsome Ryan O'Neal.
Critics aren't always right.......2005-04-04
I hesitated acquiring this movie, as it has been universally panned by the critics. "Love Story" was a classic of the '70's, so I believe the critics panned this movie, just because of their (justifiable in most cases) hatred for sequels in general. However, as a stand-alone movie, "Oliver's Story" is still quite an enjoyable film. I highly recommend anyone considering it to ignore the critics and give it a chance.
As for the DVD, it is a bare-bones release, not even including a trailer. The picture is adequate, showing no signs of wear or neglect, but not without a certain graininess.
One fluke I found using my Toshiba player was a French subtitle for the movie's opening title only. This is quite a strange occurence, given that French subtitles aren't even available from the "set-up" screen. My guess is that someone did some erroneous programming in the creation stages of the disc.
All in all, a quite enjoyable film, which I highly recommend.
A Must-See Follow-up For "Love Story" Fans.......2001-01-09
Although not as interesting as "Love Story," this sequel does allow us to see what Oliver's life was like in the years after Jenny's death.
The movie begins with Jenny's funeral and we watch Oliver go through the motions of living, but not really participating in anything except his work. One day, he meets a jogger played by Candice Bergen. They begin a relationship that is pretty much of a bore to all but the most devoted Ryan O'Neal fans (of which I am definitely one!). Ms. Bergen's portrayal is wooden and unappealing, and viewers are probably relieved when she announces she can no longer live with Jenny's ghost. The one good thing her character, Marcy Bonwit Nash, does is take Oliver on a tour of her company's Hong Kong factories. When Oliver sees the poor conditions there, he begins to gain respect for his father and the way the senior Barrett ran his mills.
Oliver's long overdue reunion with his father is touching and we finally get a glimmer of hope at the end that Oliver has learned that living is for the living, and he will finally be able to live his life again.
Not a great movie, but interesting and definitely worth seeing if you loved "Love Story."

NO ENGLISH SUBTILES OR CLOSED CAPTIONED FOR THE DEAF!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-16
Hello, you should think twice to make a dvd with english subtiles or closed captioned for the deaf to understand the movie....you only made spanish subtiles, so it really insult the deafies without the english subtiles or closed captioned. I think that movie is good, but I completely don't understand what it is TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you don't care about deafies, get a LIFE!
Dub Be Good To Me.......2005-10-30
I'm a little flabbergasted by some of the reviews on this site. Everyone else on planet earth seems to acknowledge this film as the turkey it is. Dubbing Samuel Le Bihan (the 'french' love interest) was a criminal act, making his scenes outright laughable.
Please do not waste your money on this, watch it on TV if you must as im sure it will be on very soon!!!!
ANDIE PANDERS.......2005-09-05
Don't be fooled by the trailer for this one. What appears to be a "thriller" is merely a romantic fantasy/drama, and one that moves rather ponderously at that. Lovely Andie McDowell plays a young widow with three precocious children. She lost hubby Tim Roth (in a vastly underused performance) the night she decided to leave him. Roth, an idealistic surgeon, had turned to a life of alcohol and abuse, and was killed in a car crash in pursuit of his vacating family. McDowell is now working at a lab, with buddy Margot Kidder trying to get her to cope with her loss. Enter a handsome doctor (well played by Samuel LeBihan) who falls for McDowell and becomes a surrogate daddy for the younguns. Problem is McDowell is starting to "see" her dead husband and is even getting mysterious phone calls every night at 12:15 a.m., the exact time of Roth's death. Ultimately, THE LAST SIGN becomes a tale of redemption, forgiveness and moving on. McDowell seems lost in the role and Kidder's performance is eerily kooky. The movie doesn't have any real suspense and becomes more or less a Harlequin romance with the predictable happy ending.
Another Look and Listen to the Spirits of the Deceased.......2005-05-22
Hollywood seems increasingly interested in stories that deal with speaking with the dead, from the paranormal scientific approach to the solace for grief stance to the old-fashioned ghost tales. THE LAST SIGN sort of combines all of these approaches but does it with surprising subtlety and restraint and simply uses such ideas to speak to greater ideals such as forgiveness.
Director Douglas Law uses a strong cast to relate the story of a widow Kathy (Andie MacDowell) whose alcoholic, abusive physician husband Jeremy (Tim Roth) recently died in an auto accident. Still living in their large home in Canada, Kathy and her three children are coping fairly well until Kathy begins to receive phone calls at 12:15 AM from someone who remains silent. Out of financial need and out of fear she rents the cottage on the grounds to a handsome young man Marc (Samuel Le Bihan) who has an aura of the strange about him: is it real or imagined?
At Kathy's work her boss Isabel (Margot Kidder) keeps her grounded and when Kathy relates seeing images of Jeremy and hearing suspicious sounds both of which cause flashbacks to Jeremy's abusive personality, Isabel encourages Kathy to attempt to speak to the dead and discover the secrets of messages and signs from the departed. Kathy's friend (the chronically underused fine actress Mimi Kuzyk) likewise is supportive and encourages Kathy to accept the attentive advances of Marc. Kathy's confused life calms when she is informed that the last sign that a departed can give is the one emotional trait that has troubled her most. The reveling of that sign from Jeremy and the resultant changes in Kathy and her family's life form a rather tender ending to this successful thriller movie.
The surprises come from the quality of performances: Tim Roth even without significant lines creates a wholly believable character; Margot Kidder returns to the screen after her notorious battle with bad publicity and gives an unforgettable performance of a quirky, slightly wacky but comic and caring oddball; Andie MacDowell keeps the difficult character of a widow with mixed reactions to her husband's death in believable focus at all times. The lighting and camera work are superb, for once letting our imagination about ghosts take precedence over that tired use of cartoon computer animation!
Not a great movie, but certainly heads above much of the current Hollywood glut of other films in this genre. Worth watching. Grady Harp, May 05
Not what you'd expect........2005-03-30
A woman is widowed and trying to move on with her life but sees her husband and feels his pressence everywhere. She begins to get messages from him beyond the grave. It sounds scary, but it's more suspensful than actually scary. This movie was worth seeing, despite the sometimes poor acting, and the slow pace. Andy McDowell doesn't give the amazing performance that another viewer claimed. It's in par with her performance in the movie Green Card. You decide. Tim Roth is a minor character here and has very few speaking lines, and the French man in this film can't act. So why am I giving it 4 stars? Because the story is interesting, well developed, and I liked the subtelty of the theme of abuse and forgivness. Well done. I can't help but wish this script had been given a bigger budget and a better chance to shine. Worth seeing!

Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa (1560-1613), was not only insanely jealous (he murdered his unfaithful wife and her lover); he was insane, period. In this brilliantly directed documentary with expertly sung music, Werner Herzog explores Gesualdo's madness through his biography, visits to the sites of key events in his life, paintings, still-active gossip, and above all the music he composed--madrigals whose death-haunted texts and abrasive harmonies still have the power to shock.
Music is only a part of this disc's attractions, but it is powerful and well-integrated into the flow of the film, and it puts the viewer directly in touch with Gesualdo's tortured soul. Two vocal groups exemplify different views on how it should be performed. Il Complesso Barocco uses instruments, very discreetly, to support the voices; the Gesualdo Consort has five unaccompanied voices. Both sing with the expressive intensity the music requires. --Joe McLellan
Description
Werner Herzog's chilling story of sixteenth century composer Don Carol Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, whose life embraced sexual excess, ghastly murder and obsession. Filmed on location in Italy, the program explores both Gesualdo's musical legacy and the extraordinary influence his tormented life has continued to exert on those whose lives crossed his path. Contributors include Gerald Pace, director of The Gesualdo Consort, Alan Curtis, music director of the singing ensemble II Complesso Barocco, and Professor Ludica of the Archeological Museum in Venosa.
Customer Reviews:
Herzog at his quirkiest.......2003-12-30
The subject matter that Herzog had to play with fed straight into his sense of the absurd. Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices starts off as a straight-up documentary about a demented renaissance composer, but Herzog's twists are what make it memorable. Strange characters appear in Gesualdo's ruined castle. People begin to speak straight into the camera at odd moments. And Herzog's fine eye for the peculiar is at it's best here. His use of technology throughout the film is interesting.
Gesualdo..........gesUALdo.........GESUALDO!!.......2002-12-14
This DVD is wonderful in all its wonderfulness. Gesualdo, was perhaps the greatest musician to ever live. Not only did he compose wonderfulness, he was multi-talented in the areas of gardening (he chopped a measly country-side in a matter of 2 to 3 months), cooking (he prepared a meal for over 1000 people with 125 courses of quail), and murder. His music foreshadows the likes of such greats as Wagner, Jacopo Peri, Ignatz Stotmeiker, Stravinsky, and Charles Burney. We see the tortured soul of Gesualdo having an effect on present day pyschopaths. There is even a retarded boy riding a horse, and a young child being chained and flying through the air while forced to wear women's clothing.
In short, Gesualdo is the most imortant (besides Franz Tunder, Walter Von de Vogelwiede, and Busnois) who ever graced God's green Earth (which, incidently, is less green because of Gesualdo's wacking).
If I could give this 23 stars I would give it 17 and a half, but that's still more than the five I gave it here.
ONE OF HERZOG'S FUNNIEST & A GREAT INTRO TO THE MUSIC.......2001-12-30
I almost can't believe that GESUALDO is out on DVD. This is one of Herzog's funniest documentaries. I'd never heard of Gesualdo before, but the film made me a huge fan of his music. He led a crazy life and made some hauntingly beautiful polyphony--all of it is shown with the expected immediacy and weird humor by master filmmaker Werner Herzog.

No happy endings .......2004-08-26
"No End" (1985), probably the best of Krzysztof Kieslowski's early feature films, was assailed by the church because of its dark, numbing ending. The film was set in 1981, during martial law. With a setup out of "Six Feet Under," this was Kieslowski's most personal film, his friend and fellow director Agnieszka Holland says in the extras. "Audiences didn't know what to make of it." Grazyna Szapolowska plays a young widow who fights to find a reason to go on; a second story concerns the trial of an uncompromising political prisoner. Critics of the time complained it was really two movies. Perhaps. They're both well worth seeing. This is one of four recent additions to Kino's Kieslowski collection -- along with "The Scar," "Camera Buff" and "Blind Chance" -- all of which show that the Polish master's writing and directing skills arrived almost fully formed when he turned to feature films. Each of the films benefits from a powerful central performance. They are products of the 1970s and '80s, a time of vast sociopolitical changes in Poland, but are not timepieces or simplistic attacks on the communists. Highly recommended. The color images (full frame, enhanced) and sound are adequate. Subtitles are clear. The DVD includes a short film.
A great movie, a great director.......2000-09-09
I was happy to find another great movie to buy. I bought this one taking the chance, because I never have heard anything of it. But once again Kieslowski take over deep fellings and a complex speech, opening a door of sensations. Great movie.

Description
At age 23, Eric "Hank" Gathers (Victor Love, Shadow of Doubt) escaped the inner city to become one of America's top college basketball stars. As leader of Loyola Marymount's team, his career is on the fast track. He's certain to be a top NBA draft choice.
With love and encouragement from his mother, Lucille (Nell Carter, Give Me a Break!) and his best friend, Bo Kimble (Duane Davis, Under Siege), Hank pushes himself higher and higher - then tragedy strikes.
Customer Reviews:
Great Drama for the passionate basketball lover........1999-08-30
Eric "Hank" Gathers was a very dedicated basketball player from day one. He thrilled the nation in the late 80's when he took little Loyola Maramount University to the top, while leading all Division-1 athletes in scoring and rebounding his Junior Year. It was in his Senior year that the energetic Gathers suffered a minor heart attack, forcing him to sit out an unwanted period of time. Against doctors orders, he came back too early only to suffer a fatal heart attack near the end of that same season. The movie takes you through Hank's breif life from the age of eleven all the way up to his sudden death. This drama shows you how he and his best friend Bo Kimble always dreamed to make it to the NBA. Bo had it easy, always being the star; while Hank was the underdog, and had to go through many obstacles to get to the top. The year after Hank's tragic death Bo was drafted where he and Hank had always talked about being drafted...in the lottery. This is a true story.
