Planet Earth: As You've Never Seen It Before
ASIN: B000MR9D5E
Release Date: 2007-04-24 |
Amazon.com
As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.
That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting), and each episode ends with 10-minute "Planet Earth Diaries" (exclusive to this DVD set) that cover a specific aspect of production, like "Diving with Pirahnas" or "Into the Abyss" (the latter showing the rigors of filming the planet's most spectacular caves, including the last filming ever officially permitted in the "Chandelier Ballroom," a crystal-encrusted cavern found over a mile deep in New Mexico's treacherous Lechuguilla, the deepest cave in the continental United States.)
With so many of Earth's natural wonders on display, it's only fitting that the final DVD in this five-disc set is devoted to Planet Earth: The Future, a separate three-part series in which a global array of experts is assembled to discuss issues of conservation, protection of delicate ecosystems, and the socio-economic benefits of understanding nature as a commodity that returns trillions of dollars in value at no cost to Earth's human population. At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of Planet Earth's final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours." --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Blue Planet series is a "Must Own".......2007-09-18
If you are any kind of nature buff, this is an all-inclusive set for you. The stunning photography & once-in-a-lifetime scenes depicted in these videos are without equal. Each DVD has three one-hour segments on it. At the end of each segment, the producer or director sums up how they were able to film one of the more difficult, laborious subjects. You are left without a doubt that these men & women combed the world & did not leave any stone unturned in order to produce the highest quality film journey about our planet & the creatures which inhabit it with us. There are five DVD's in the series...it is worth every penny you will spend on it.
Absolutely amazing!.......2007-09-17
I bought this as a surprise for my husband. The whole family loves it
the camera work is incredible. You feel like you are there.
Awesome!.......2007-09-17
I bought the dvd set as a gift for my husband and he loved it. We enjoyed watching the series together on T.V. and now we can watch it whenever we want. Makes a great gift!
Monumental achievement.......2007-09-17
I wasn't crazy about the narration but the photography is over the top. Especially on a large screen. Definitely one of the best series in our collection, cutting edge photography. A nice Christmas present for a family.
my 2 cents.......2007-09-13
My son (4 1/2 yr) loved the DVD. He watched it a lot. Worth the money and an excellent collection to be added to the library.

Awesome, so far beyond anything I have seen in it's genre........2007-09-16
In short it is very rewatchable and I would buy it again at more than double it's price.
what's missing.......2007-09-14
Enjoy the footage, but purchased the regular (not HD) for step-father at Father's Day, and the HD is missing some of the footage available, especially the extras. Also, some of the episodes are different ~ the snow leapord scene is missing bits . . . still a great experience in HD!
PLANET EARTH-THE COMPLETE BBC SERIES.......2007-09-11
This is an incredible product. It puts you right in the middle of things. I just love it!
incompatibility issues.......2007-09-07
i did not understand, and possibly it was naive on my part, that the hd/dvd will not play on most dvd players. i tried it on 5 different dvd players before i investigated further and found only a couple of manufacurers of these machines. i was able to return the dvd to amazon though without any problems for credit.

This is the reason why HD-DVD exists. If you have a TV that accepts 1080p and has 1080 vertical pixels, then it's sinful to be watching and yes--it's good to be a sinner.

Product Description
Come explore years of incredible undersea photography and breathtaking views into a world we share. Choose four DVDs or four VHS tapes. Seasonal Seas/Cral Seas, Tidal Seas/Coasts, Ocean World/Frozen Seas, The Open Ocean and The Deep. Two titles per disc or tape. (Some scenes may be graphic in nature.)
Amazon.com
Extraordinary footage and eloquent narration by David Attenborough highlight the BBC's remarkable wildlife series The Blue Planet: Seas of Life. "Ocean World" begins with astonishing views of a gigantic blue whale--the elusive Holy Grail of undersea photography--and the marvels continue to demonstrate the power, diversity, and profound ecological influence of Earth's oceans. "Frozen Seas" examines whales, walruses, penguins, and other creatures under the extreme conditions of the Arctic and Antarctic Circles. The next two episodes are even better. "Open Ocean" travels thousands of miles into the vast "liquid desert," where currents determine how the ocean's diverse life forms will assume their places in the food chain. More amazing, "The Deep" descends with a state-of-the-art submersible to the ocean's abyssal plain and beyond, filming such bizarre creatures as the fangtooth, bioluminescent jellies, transparent squid, the giant-mouthed gulper eel, and the never-before-seen hairy angler fish.
"Seasonal Seas" focuses on the explosion of life that accompanies every annual blooming of plankton, numbering in the countless billions and captured here with brilliant microphotography. In "Coral Seas," miles-long reefs of living coral are explored, from deep within (requiring brief computer animation) to the surrounding environs, where you'll see white-tipped sharks in a feeding frenzy while beautiful harlequin shrimp wrestle with a starfish. "Tidal Seas" explores the myriad life forms that thrive when lunar gravity pulls the oceans offshore. "Coasts" is easily the most brutal episode, but no less mesmerizing. The most unexpected, and horrifying, sequence is the orca, earning its "killer whale" nickname by capturing, killing, and tail-tossing a seal pup--a sequence so mysteriously primal that even the most seasoned marine biologist will be utterly amazed. One of the finest wildlife programs you're ever likely to see, The Blue Planet: Seas of Life provides the privilege of visiting a truly alien world teeming with the rarest wonders of nature. The series was recut into the feature-length Deep Blue in 2005. --Jeff Shannon

Creates wonder in our natural world.......2007-09-16
Stunning photography. Brilliant choices of subjects. Amazing insights into the world beneath the surface of the oceans that comprise the majority of our planet and are so significant to the continuation of all life. This series should create awe, wonder, humility, and even reverence for the beauty, savagery, and mystery of the seas.
Wonderful!.......2007-09-13
My husband and I stayed up til after midnight watching these DVD's!!!! It was hard to turn off the T.V. and walk away from as they were just soooo facinating and phenomenal footage!!!! I highly recommend this just as enjoyable as Planet Earth!
Just like Planet Earth.......2007-09-10
We have both series - Planet Earth and Blue Planet. Both are outstanding collections and must haves for anyone. Our kids love them as well and have become a learning tool alongside other PBS and Discovery Channel type shows. It is absolutely amazing work and narrated well to boot.

During the 1980s, one cartoon series ruled the airwaves... The Transformers. This paragon of consumerism was created with a dual purpose--to entertain and to galvanize children to buy the toys. Somewhere along the line, the show became a cult favorite, so in 1986 they fashioned an epic tale of good versus evil specifically for the big screen. The result looked vaguely like an animated remake of Star Wars. Who are the Transformers? The good guys are the Autobots: Optimus Prime, SoundWave, Jazz, Ultra Magnus, and many more. Their mortal enemies are the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron and StarScream. The Autobots must save their home planet from an evil entity known as Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). At the same time, they must defend themselves from an all-out attack from the Decepticons. Along the way, lives are lost, battles are fought, and a new Autobot leader is born as another dies. The story and action never stop in a thrilling ride that often makes you forget that you're watching an '80s cartoon with inferior graphics. The violence will also come as a mild shock to those who haven't seen this film for a while--definitely a movie for the 8 and over audience. For those who grew up on this series, this is a movie that must be watched. Unlike cartoon serials before and after, The Transformers relied on solid stories and interesting characters, a manifesto the film itself upholds with gusto and grace while also being morally responsible. Don't underestimate this movie; there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. --Jeremy Storey

Glam rock ruins the world!.......2007-09-17
I love Transformers and this movie could have been pretty cool like all of the televized cartoons, but the music makes it UNBEARABLE!
extreme transformation.......2007-09-16
Wow. This new 20th edition of Transformers: The Movie is nothing short of awesome. You have a newly remastered movie(IN WIDESCREEN), tons of extras like commentaries, original commercials in both america and japan, and also you get to see the "lost" episode that was never aired in america. It was the last episode right before the movie(which tied the series to the movie a lot better). This is definitely the best edition of the movie to have come out so far, especially for hardcore fans. Be sure to also look for the newly released soundtrack which has four new tracks of more original score. This is the pinnical of one of the best 80's animation series ever.
original transformers movie.......2007-09-13
The movie is excellent, the visuals and audio have all been updated to todays standards. The movie brought back memories from the 1980's. Any one that used to watch the original (G1) transformers should buy this. I also believe that new audiences will also find this a pleasure. The action is great and so is the plot.
Beware if this video is for a child.......2007-09-11
I bought this DVD for my son because he absolutely loves Transformers. There are some things you should know before you buy it for your child. Optimus Prime dies. My son cried. He was crushed. I had never seen the movie so it was a bit of a shock. I spent my weekend explaining death.
As a mom, I think it is violent, but at least there is no blood. I think they blow up when killed. I did notice they said the four letter "S" word and "damn it". This is a heads up if you were buying it for a child. Over all it is a great movie, just think twice if your child is young.
Took me back to my childhood.......2007-09-08
If you are a true Transformers fan, you will appreciate the movie, commentary and extras that were included in the DVD. This is truly a prize for Transformers fans of all ages!

Amazing.......2007-09-13
All i can say about all 3 boxsets, is, they are amazing. They really put alot of effort into making these for the fans. Just the artwork is breathtaking. also the quality of the dvds is amazing as well. all in all thank you so much for bringing this fabulous series to dvd, finally!
The Final Volume.......2007-09-08
This last volume of DVD's is as good as the previous two. The artwork inside & out is great. The episodes feature many new characters such as Peekablue (my favorite), Flutterina, Netossa, Spinnerella, Sweet Bee, and a very brief appearance by the Star sisters. The Horde's new addition is Entrapta, seen in several episodes. There are a few guest appearances by He-Han, Orko, & Man-At-Arms.
The special features include another short documentary on some of the artists' & directors' favorite episodes. There are profiles on each of the new characters seen in the episodes, an image gallery of promotional pictures for The Secret Of The Sword, and a gallery of Horde character drawings.
The two new art cards are extremely well done, though I'm disappointed that some of my favorite characters have been left out of the series.
I'm so glad to finally have the entire series. It was an important part of my childhood and I wish that the series could have lasted just a bit longer.
Very disappointed........2007-09-05
This dvd set is only in English. No Spanish audio like previous seasons. She Ra have millions of fans who only speaks Spanish.
We're lucky to be getting Season 2.......2007-09-01
Get these while you can because, like the previous reviewer mentioned, there's a good chance She-Ra's DVD sets could go out-of-print like Jem and the Holograms. We're extremely lucky to have gotten the complete series. Apparently the She-Ra sets haven't sold nearly as well as He-Man. And from what I understand, the sales on the Season 1 Volume 2 box set were somewhat disappointing, to the point where BCI Eclipse had to lower the recommended price a full ten dollars on this one.
3rd DVD Set = Complete She-Ra! .......2007-08-29
Once fans own this third and final volume of She-Ra Princess of Power collections will be complete! BCI Ecplise has done a great job with getting these shows released and I have a feeling that once they lose the rights or even after a couple years these DVD sets will go out of print then eveyone will want them. Same thing happened with Jem and the Holograms released by Rhino years back now they are selling over $100.00 in some cases. If we are lucky Sony will hopefully release shows like G.I. and Jem and the Holograms that they own the rights to before fans of the show mainly early to late 30 year old that grew up with the shows will purchase them since that age group seems to be the buyers of these classic 80's animated shows.

Against a backdrop of interplanetary intrigue rebellion and betrayal the future of humanity itself rests with the Children Of Dune in this sweeping tale of visionary sci-fi adventure! Conspiracies abound in Children of Dune, Sci-Fi Channel's praiseworthy miniseries sequel to Frank Herbert's Dune, loyally adapted from the Herbert novels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune by John Harrison, who passed directorial duties (due to a scheduling conflict) to Greg Yaitanes, a 31-year-old TV director and Dune neophyte tackling his biggest assignment to date. Uninitiated viewers face a disadvantage; it's best to read Herbert's books and/or see the first miniseries before plunging into this remarkably coherent tangle of political intrigue, unfolding 12 years after the events of Dune.
To his horror, Maud'Dib--Arrakis emperor Paul Atreides (Alec Newman, reprising his Dune role)--has become the unintended figurehead of a violent dictatorship, and his enemies are multiplying. Vanishing into the desert, he waits as destiny shapes his twin heirs Leto II (James McAvoy) and Ghanima (Jessica Brooks), who must contend with their scheming aunt Alia (Daniela Amavia) while Princess Wensicia (Susan Sarandon), of the enemy House Corrino, plots her own attack on Maud'Dib's familial empire. Exiled Atreides matriarch Lady Jessica (Alice Krige, giving the film's finest performance) returns to Arrakis, where the enormous, desert-dwelling sandworms face an uncertain future. As always, the spice must flow, and the universe's most coveted commodity remains at the center of this richly detailed and physically impressive production. Special effects range from awesome (fly-over shots of the capital city, Arakeen) to awful (the saber-tooth tigers look like Jumanji rejects), and Dune devotees will endlessly debate the miniseries' strengths and weaknesses. Some may desire more action to punctuate the film's inherent verbosity, but consensus will surely conclude that this is Dune done right, with monumental effort and obvious devotion from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

Wow.......2007-06-29
I haven't ready of the books, I won't lie to you about that.
I haven't seen much Sci-Fi beyond what's universally known (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.)
But I will still tell you this much...
This is one of the best mini-series I have ever watched. You get everyting in this, drama, suspense, action and so much more.
If you're planning on buying this to get a war miniseries, an all out action miniseries, or even a "cool and trippy" sci-fi miniseries, this may not be for you.
It's so much deeper than that and unfortunately I don't think a lot of people will be able to appreciate it. That being said, if you're in the mood for a good story, I'd recommend this one.
I would however behoove you to check out the first miniseries,Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) , before watching this one, if only to get a full appreciation and understanding of what's going on.
Affordable and Amazing to watch!.......2007-06-07
After watching the first mini-series of dune (and loving it!), I immediately watched the second as soon as I got it. I thought it was even better then the first.
First I'm glad they fixed some minors problems, a major issue with everyone was the Fremen's neon glowing eyes. They toned it down to a more subtle believable look.
Second was the great casting. I think almost everyone did a great job. My favorite actors were the ones playing Leto II, Ghanima, Irulan, and Alia. They gave such a powerful performance and really gave their character emotions that we can respond to and feel for. Like Alia's tortured possession scene, Irulan's love for Paul, and Leto and Ghanima's journey to put the rule of the universe to order.
Third was the soundtrack. And what an unbelievable score it was! I love every moment with Brian Tyler's piece. I don't think the movie would have been half as successful without it. I listen to it from my ipod, since I love it so much. It's powerful, diverse, and fits the mood of the story and the characters. My favorite tracks are Children of Dune, House Atredies, and Ima Natusf.
All together it creates a great movie, especially one made for television surprisingly. You usually don't get quality like this on 95% of made for tv movies. So I give a lot of credit to the makers for pulling it off so well within a small budget.
I never read the books and at first with the Dune mini-series and this one, some may not understand some point of the story, but really pay attention and you shouldn't have a problem understanding. It helps to watch it a second time around.
With this price, you can't go wrong!
Review: Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (TV Miniseries).......2007-06-06
This sequel to the miniseries "Dune" follows the storyline of the original series of books quite well, and is an excellent addition to my video library. After viewing both miniseries, I am encouraged to re-read the texts covered by this set of videos.
Love this mini series.......2007-06-05
Great continuation of the Dune mini series created by the sci-fi channel. They did a great job representing the book. I'm hoping the come out with God Emperor to continue the series.
Entertaining, but not up to the books........2007-04-19
The hardest part of adapting the Dune books to a film format is that, in the interest of time, one has to decide whether to focus on the action or the politics of the story line. The Children of Dune (actually a combination of the second and third books) opts to try and strike a middle ground and actually succeeds in large part. They get extra credit from me for bringing back the actors from the Dune mini-series. The story is great, the film quality isn't bad. I thought that they played up the maddness of Paul's sister just a little too much for my taste, but Leto's character seemed spot on. Its well worth the purchase if you're a fan of the Dune books. Its amazing to see some of the places that previously existed only in my head on the screen.

Discovered.......2007-09-15
This film is excellent! It does a wonderful job of discussing all the parameters for complex life and shows mathmatically the improbability of complex life. The documentary is put together extremely well using many captivating visuals. This documentary should be a requirement in all high schools.
Terrific Perspective.......2007-09-06
I enjoyed this program considerably. It was recommended by a friend who works at JPL; I was somewhat surprised by the content and conclusions. Very refreshing; and a solid case to the all to often unchallenged assumption of our insignificance and randomness.
It has enough depth not to be boring and yet is grounded enough that audiences of all levels will grasp the concepts. This CD provides a balance that is not provided in public classrooms, so I also see real value for maturing children. The many links to other features and books about intelligent design are quite helpful.
I recommend it highly.
Great overview of God's wonderful provision for us.......2007-08-13
This was a fascinating and wonderful explanation of our specialness to God. It makes you feel so small and insignificant until you see just how precisely God engineered the whole universe to accomodate this little speck of a planet. Science really reveals God better than anything except the Bible. We have an AWESOME GOD!
Puts true prospective where it should be and you connect the dots........2007-07-19
Awesome film. This film would be a great learning tool for Schools and Universities and the entire family. Its a must for the video library and I usually don't like these types of films too. I remembered watching science films in school and college and they always seemed to bore me and it made a great time to catch up on sleep, but this film was so not the case.
This was originally recommended to me by a friend to watch and I'm so glad I did because this film got me to stop and think for once instead of getting lost in my own reality of things, which is to be only entertained.
This film uses Science and mathematics to prove how unique and rare the Earth is, while showing how amazing and small we truly are in the grand scheme of things. I was not only entertained with the quality of this film and its production, but also learned a great deal about our earth and the Universe because of their unique relationship. Its a film that really made me think for once with out telling me how to think or drawing my conclusions for me. It was truly refreshing to have that prospective while enjoying the awesome pictures of our Earth, Universe and beyond. I might have to rethink that maybe Science and mathematics are not as boring and useless after all, so for that it has opened up a new prospective of learning.
'Intelligent Design' from a macro perspective.......2007-07-17
This documentary is well done and it makes a strong case for 'intelligent design' but without any religious references. Its focus is on the macro, i.e. what is known through astrophysics and astronomy. The scientific findings, and their implications, are presented in understandable terms and in an interesting fashion. Even though no mention is made of religion or of God, this documentary is an excellent precursor to discussions about these topics.

Owing a major debt to Alien and its cinematic spawn, Pitch Black is a guilty pleasure that surpasses expectations. As he did with The Arrival, director David Twohy revitalizes a derivative story, allowing you to forgive its flaws and submit to its visceral thrills. Under casual scrutiny, the plot's logic crumbles like a stale cookie, but it's definitely fun while it lasts.
A spaceship crashes on a desert planet scorched under three suns. The mostly doomed survivors include a resourceful captain (Radha Mitchell), a drug-addled cop (Cole Hauser), and a deadly prisoner (Vin Diesel) who quickly escapes. These clashing personalities discover that the planet is plunging into the darkness of an extended eclipse, and it's populated by hordes of ravenous, razor-fanged beasties that only come out at night. The body count rises, and Pitch Black settles into familiar sci-fi territory.
What sets the movie apart is Twohy's developing visual style, suggesting that this veteran of B-movie schlock may advance to the big leagues. Like the makers of The Blair Witch Project, Twohy understands the frightening power of suggestion; his hungry monsters are better heard than seen (although once seen, they're chillingly effective), and Pitch Black gets full value from moments of genuine panic. Best of all, Twohy's got a well-matched cast, with Mitchell (so memorable with Ally Sheedy in High Art) and Diesel (Pvt. Caparzo from Saving Private Ryan) being the standouts. The latter makes the most of his muscle-man role, and his character's development is one more reason this movie works better than it should. --Jeff Shannon

ANOTHER REASON TO BE SCARED OF THE DARK!!!.......2007-09-04
man this movie was hard core, since the first time i watched it, and even now after many many times of seeing it. it's still a good one for me. man especially since vin diesel was up in there. my hero. movie does him justice. he's great, his acting, and his skills. let the world know who he was. he's been unstoppable since. another one of my favorites is cole hauser. i give him props. this was a thrill ride. you never know what's in the dark. there's always a scare of the unknown. don't venture in the dark alone. "i'm not the one you gotta worry about", nicely spoken. riddicks not the bad guy here, he's going to turn out to be the hero, the leader, their hope. good movie, if you haven't seen it you definitly should.
amazing movie.......2007-07-25
pitch black makes you love the bad guy and want the "good guys" to die. not many movies can do that. pure badassery...
Excellent Movie.......2007-07-07
However, not widely viewed prior to the release of Chronicles of Riddick. This is a sci-fi thriller! People marooned on a desert planet with a surprise when the sun goes down ("Pitch-Black). Riddick as always is a tough guy whose character you will like and want to see him in more movies. The choice of characters was very good. You develop distinct feelings towards each one and the writers did not let those emotions go to waste. Excellent cinematography. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting for the boogey men!
Director's log.......2007-05-02
(Pitch Black) is an unrated movie about transporting forty passengers and one Furian murderer. The ship gets caught in a meteor shower, kills the captain. The ship crashes on a baren desert planet. Soon the as lights go off, the only one they can trust is the murderer, because he's the only one who can see in the dark so I hope you're not afraid of the dark.
Great movie even better on HD-DVD.......2007-03-24
The extras are sparse, but the transfer really shows how much better HD-DVD looks over DVD. I have both and side to side you can see the lifelike coloring of the flashlights in the dark, details are clear. The movie is one of my wife's favorites and one of Diesels best.

Customer Reviews:
Just OK.......2007-09-05
Definitely some impressive shots, but it's got nothing on "Planet Earth" (maybe I shouldn't have expected a comparison considering the price discrepancy b/tw the 2).
Anyway, it is a great way to show off you HD TV as background scenery at a party.
OK---But Not Great.......2007-08-23
I was a little disappointed in the Movie. Some of the shots were pretty good, but some weren't that good. It looked like very little of the Movie was shot with HD Cameras. I think there was way too many shots from outer space onto the Earth. When they overdo something like that, it tends to make you start to lose interest. This movie is nothing like Planet Earth and if you've seen that, you'll be kind of spoiled. If I knew what I know now, I probably would not have bought this movie right away. Maybe later to add to the collection, because in order to have a collection, you have to have some mediocre Movies also.
PC it is.......2007-08-11
I love space videos and movies about the earth but this movie is just too politically correct as it spends too much time on how man is damaging the earth. Most of this is unfounded as Mt. St. Hellens put out an immeasurable amount of carbon dioxide when it erupted several years ago, and the earth survived oaky, and then someone drives a modern SUV that puts out a fraction of the emissions of what any compact car did from ten years ago and that is somehow categorized as evil. The earth actually goes through a heating and cooling process over many thousands and millons of years that has nothing to do with man, we can't produce enough carbon dioxide to change this process if we really tried. But yet, Mr Al Gore is getting money from several political interests who don't realize this. I hope he invests his money wisely as someday they will realize this and he will not get a cent. Yes, I am done ranting.
There is some fantastic photography in this movie and it is worth seeing if you can stand the PC stuff.
More of a HD DVD Review..........2007-08-08
This HD DVD disc has two features on it and both are around 50 minutes long. There's really nothing in the way of extras other then the features. Both features are neat at first but how much footage of the earth from space can you watch? That's up to you. Seeing the earth from orbit these days is nothing new. I was extremely disappointed that it all "seemed" to be shot in film. I think they have to do this for IMAX but can't they shoot it in pure hi-def video & transfer it to film for the IMAX? Probably the wrong screen ratios. A good portion of the film "jumps" a lot and it's noticable at 56". They made no attempt to clean the film as there's specs of duct & stuff throughout the features. A lot of the NASA footage is old because everyone is dressed from the early 90's/late 80's. The space shuttle scenes & Earth scenes from space are fine but not as good as Planet Earth's footage and the video essentials hi-def display of the shuttle taking off blow's this disc away.
The surround sound is actually nice here and there. A hurricane segment was really convincing in sound eventhough you're watching old raw footage from "back in the day". Overall, you get a total of under 2 hours of lame "been there, done that" footage. They even have a little rant on saving the planet at the last 10 minutes of Blue Planet with the usual citing of devastating facts but no explanation of the proof. I believe there's a hole in the ozone layer but at least show us some cool satelite/composite shots of it. I don't know why they give you this great display of our planet that makes you proud to be on this great rock in space for 40 minutes and then end it with a "stop polluting your planet idiots", kind of an ending. Eesh. I wish they showed more of the craters on earth. Now that was interesting.
Overall, from an HD DVD point of view...I did not see it in IMAX and thought it would look amazing in HD but I was sadly disappointed. Thank god I rented it. And for the blu-ray folks, it isn't going to be much better because the stock is not fantastic. You get a VC-1 compressed version of older junky film mixed with newer fine looking film.

saw this on imax in ft. worth many years ago. if it is 1/3 as good on this dvd as it was in imax, it will be awesome. the imax version i saw in an imax theatre brought tears to my eyes.....it is very near a religious experience. no foolin!!
