Billed as "the day music changed history," the Live Aid concerts of July 13, 1985, were held to raise money to fight the horrifying famines sweeping Africa. The brainchild of Bob Geldof and representing the efforts of countless musicians and technicians, Live Aid was a genuine and inspiring effort to help the victims of an overwhelming calamity. Twenty years after the twin concerts (one in London, one in Philadelphia) were broadcast worldwide, the 4-DVD treatment furthers the cause, with proceeds going toward the Band Aid Trust.

The DVD set opens with a heartbreaking documentary on the crisis, followed by videos of the two hit songs that represented the collaborative nature of Geldof's efforts—Band Aid' s "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and USA for Africa's "We Are the World." Since Live Aid was never intended to be released in a recorded format, preservation of TV footage has been unreliable, resulting in some glaring omissions. Led Zeppelin's semi-reunion doesn't appear, and neither does a legendary session with Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, and Keith Richards. Some sets by performers who were popular at the time may inspire either nostalgic glee or head-scratching (Kiki Dee fans, you know who you are). Sprinkled amid these performances are a couple real gems, including a performance by Run DMC, the event's sole representative of the ascendant rap movement. Much of the music here was a passing fad, but the sentiment that brought it all together is timeless. -- Ryan Boudinot

5 out of 5 stars worth every penny.......2007-08-01

the fact that the i am able to contribute to the cause is already worth every penny. with the added bonus of being able to watch the concert that nobody would think of being able to watch again. i've watched the concert when i was 13 yrs old in the philippines. the quality is not really good, but hey, that was the 80's! some performance are not included but it was explained in the book. and count ourselves lucky that we are still able to have 4 discs!!! it's like owning part of history that won't happen again.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM !!! WASTE OF MONEY !.......2007-07-13

I recently bought this item. Upon viewing them most of the songs were cut and just very few were full. Its like having a climax listening and then was suddenly cut of replace with another song. IT IS LIKE A SAMPLER !!!!

3 out of 5 stars As many have pointed out ... .......2007-07-10

For the price you're being asked to pay, this is a terrific set with a lot of great music. However, the criticisms everyone seems to universally have are as glaring as they are legitimate. First is the spotty audio quality due to the poor condition of the existing recordings and the second is what you're missing out on.

I can live with the audio. Sure I'd do hand-springs if it was in 5.1 surround and I could really crank up my stereo and jam out with my air-guitar. As it is though, the audio quality ranks somewhere around the "OK" to "Acceptable" range. Not great by a long-shot, but I guess it'll do.

Unforgivable, however, is the HOURS of missing footage. The real tragedy here is that some of the missing sets are the concert's most memorable, history-making, moments. It's borderline-tragic that, in the zeal of making this a one-in-a-lifetime event, the footage and audio weren't preserved better. From what I understand Geldof was very against any recordings existing and since Mtv was in its infancy, they simply didn't know what to do with what they had.

So again, it's a good value for your dollar and I can't not recommend it, but I can't help but sigh when I think of what a treasure this might have been.

5 out of 5 stars A Moment In Time..........2007-06-05

Perhaps I'm being too generous by giving the LIVE AID dvd set 5-stars. As another reviewer pointed out, many performances are left off of this set. However, some of the biggest acts of the 80s are shown performing their monster hits with the exception of TINA TURNER, WHAM, and THE THOMPSON TWINS. Although these performers do appear with other singers/musicians, the footage of them performing their hits was either destroyed or lost. I'm sure there might be other examples of groups/singers who appear on the LIVE AID dvds and they're not performing their big hits, but, as far as I can tell, most of them are.

The fact that there's even a dvd set available is a miracle in itself.

A booklet that comes with the dvd set explains the idea behind LIVE AID and how BOB GELDOF (singer of THE BOOMTOWN RATS) saw a BBC News report on television in 1984 (the news footage is included at the start of dvd #1) about the famine going on in Africa/Ethiopia. He wanted to do something about it and formed BAND AID in the UK. This in turn formed U.S.A FOR AFRICA in the US, which ultimately led to the LIVE AID concert which happened on July 13, 1985. The concert was filmed by MTV, ABC and the BBC, and aired on its respective channel with an estimated 1.5 billion viewers around the world.

According to the dvd's producer, Jill Sinclair, Geldof wanted the concert to be shown only once and not recorded. ABC took Geldof at his word and destroyed the footage so it could never be re-broadcast again. The BBC ignored him but lost some of the footage, while the videos that weren't lost, sat collecting dust. MTV found over 100 tapes of b-roll of the concert and so Sinclair, and the rest of the LIVE AID dvd team, combined MTV's footage of the LIVE AID concert, with the remaining BBC footage and that's how we get this remarkable 4-dvd set! So bravo to Jill Sinclair and the dvd team.

The concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The dvds go back and forth from Wembley to JFK, but transitions smoothly, so there aren't any jarring cuts in between the musical acts. Considering that this concert was recorded using analog equipment and was meant for a one-time only showing, the footage itself has been restored as best as it could be and it looks pretty good (sharp, vibrant color, etc.). There are some instances where wavy-horizontal lines appear on close-up shots on some of the performances, and Sinclair explains in the booklet that this is a phenomenon called "microphany," which happens when the "camera lens is affected by great volume." The lines aren't that distracting since they aren't colored, and they don't distort the picture, but they're just noticeable. It only happens once in a while and according to the booklet, only on some UK performances.

Along with the performances, the LIVE AID dvd set also includes extras:

DVD #1
**BBC TV NEWS REPORT
**BAND AID - DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS - music video
**U.S.A FOR AFRICA - WE ARE THE WORLD - "..."

DVD #4-(includes performances recorded at different locations/times and either broadcast that day or never televised)

**INXS - What You Need; Don't Change
**B.B. KING - Why I Sing The Blues; Don't Answer The Door; Rock Me Baby
**ASHFORD & SIMPSON with TEDDY PENDERGRASS - Reach Out And Touch(Somebody's Hand)
**RUN DMC - King Of Rock
**CLIFF RICHARD - A World Of Difference
**DAVID BOWIE & MICK JAGGER - Dancing In The Streets (this is actually the music video; according to wikipedia Bowie and Jagger were supposed to do a live duet on the song, with Bowie in London and Jagger in Philadelphia, but because of technical difficulties it couldn't be done)
**DOCUMENTARY - Food And Trucks And Rock 'n' Roll

Instead of a scene selection menu, the dvds have "search by artist" that lets you go right to the start of that performer's set (which will then play the rest of the concert from that point on, rather than going back to the menu). You also have the option to just play the Wembley performances or the Philadelphia perfomances.

If you're too young to remember this concert, you might miss the significance of it. But it's still worth watching. Like Woodstock was to a generation before it, LIVE AID showed the world that young people could come together, through music, and collectively believe in something that could change the world. If you do remember this moment in time, watching this concert will bring back many memories.

Some of the stand out performances on these dvds, IMO:

FREDDIE MERCURY/QUEEN - The rapport between the audience and Mercury is incredible. He launches into an impromptu "scat" singing certain vowels to the audience and they sing it back to him, verbatim

ELTON JOHN & GEORGE MICHAEL - John playing the piano, while Michael belts out John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"

PATTI LABELLE - The soul diva belting out her version of Lennon's "Imagine" and then going into "Forever Young." Towards the end of the latter song, she puts down the microphone, walking up to the front of the stage and continues singing...and you can still hear her voice, barely audible, but powerful enough to be heard over the cheering crowd and the back-up singers

TINA TURNER & MICK JAGGER - duet on "State Of Shock" Turner matches Jagger move for move and lip for lip

So even though this set is not complete, it still deserves 5-stars.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why haven't I seen this on HBO.......2006-01-30

I think this documentary is very good with showing real porn stars talking about the life of being a porn star, how scary it is and getting tested for AIDS, this should win an Oscar.

I also recommend y'all buy "Thinking XXX" the dvd.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful! .......2005-08-30

Having always been fascinated with the adult film industry and the people not only in front but also behind the cameras; I must say that this is a pretty good film.

Lots of different interviews with people like Randy West and Nina Hartley, who have been around and working since the early 80's (at least!); as well as a lot of other interviews with the newer up and comers.

"The Secret Lives of Adult Stars" covers a wide range of topics and touches a lot of bases. Everything from views on penis size, AIDS, condoms, strippers turned porn goddesses, the role of the men, directors, couples in the biz, stalkers, fans... you name it...and there is probably a section of the documentary that deals with the subject.

If you interested in seeing lots & lots of interviews by some of the industries leading names.... and the subject matter & behind the scenes knowledge is something that interests you, then this reviewer would strongly suggest checking this movie out.

Just keep in mind...this IS a documentary - not a porno.

Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars inside the biz.......2005-03-30

This documentary bombards you with so many opinions and facts that it takes effort to digest all of the information. You learn a lot about this industry that is usually secretive. They interview male and female stars, however, like much heteropatriarchal works, this shows lots of female nudity and no male nudity. This is true despite interviewees saying the business is trying to attract more (straight?) female viewers. Unlike many documentaries, this one included optional Spanish subtitles. For those who want to know about this business, this is a must-see. It may also be good to see along with reading Jill Nelson's anthology "Whores and Other Feminists." The topic of erotic labor is finally getting the serious attention that it merits. One Eurasian actress is interviewed, but this film shows no Black or Latino porn actors or actresses. It was very Eurocentric and doesn't discuss white privilege and the abundance of blonde actresses in this arena.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-03-11

Very good insight into the world of a real life porn star.
This DVD takes you behind the scenes like no other more from the down to earth human side.I would recommend this DVD!!!!

Description

Held just 18 days after the September 11th attacks, Farm Aid 2001, A Concert for America, celebrated the solidarity, innovation, and hard work of family farmers in keeping America strong. Farm Aid was founded in 1985 by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young to raise public awareness about the plight of the American family farmer and to provide assistance to those families whose livelihood depends on agriculture. In the past 16 years, Farm Aid has raised over $23 million. This concert captures the spirit of a historic 2001 event. Performed on September 29, 2001, in Noblesville, Indiana, this sold-out Farm Aid concert featured a star-studded lineup including founder Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Farm Aid's newest board member, Dave Matthews. Also performing are Arlo Guthrie, the Doobie Brothers, and Martina McBride, all of whom gave memorable performances to demonstrate their commitment to America's family farmer.

Coming only 18 days after the September 11th attacks, the concert took on an extremely powerful spirit and overall tone - there was something about the communion of several thousand people from all walks of life and fans of all different genres getting together with some amazing music for a ten-hour concert celebration. The 2001 Farm Aid concert would be transformed into a celebration in support of more than just the annual Farm Aid cause, but America as a whole. With all the focus in late 2001 on music and its ability to raise funds and symbolize a national spirit, Farm Aid would benefit from even more national attention due to its timing.

I'll get to the shortfalls later, but what this DVD effectively does is provide a great highlight reel for an unbelievable show. What's here is fantastic stuff - the picture and sound quality are impeccable, and all the performances included (although I am not a big country fan and will almost always skip McBride's set) are worthwhile. The highlights for me are Dave's incredible "All Along the Watchtower" (the best version of this I've heard from him to date, with great touches by Willie Nelson's harp player Micky Raphael), Mellencamp's "Pink Houses" (which really summed up the spirit of the night), and both of Neil's songs. "When I Hold You In My Arms" is performed beautifully by Crazy Horse, a version I prefer over the one released on "Are You Passionate?"

The Doobie Brothers delivered a greatest hits type of set, which was just what people wanted to hear. Willie, as always, was great, and Martina McBride's set included some modern pop/country radio staples that even I recognized.

You get to see what I saw sitting in section G, looking back at the thousands on the expansive lawn behind me, lighters raised to show what seemed like a million little lights under the dark Indiana sky. It clearly got to Mellencamp as well, who responded, "Keep it up you guys, that's great."

Willie's set is done in his typical hurried style, running through some classic country, blues, gospel, and folk staples in two minute laps. The encore brings nearly everyone (no Dave or John) back out on the stage for "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Amazing Grace."

The "Special Features" section of the DVD also includes a Farm Aid Featurette: a 7-minute mini-documentary briefly profiling a number of family farmers and allowing them to tell their own stories. The featurette also includes footage from the concert itself, specifically of Neil's typically outspoken rant, but also footage of Dave Matthews' "Everyday" and Mellencamp's "Pink Houses" intermixed with footage of families working on the farm. It does a good job of getting the general message across but spends virtually no time on the specific problems facing family farmers today.

While admittedly, most people who watch the DVD will do so solely for the musical performances, with all the potential the DVD technology brings, it would've made much more sense in my opinion to include a longer documentary. It could've included footage of the factory farms causing the problems, the environmentalist perspective, and the lack of attention Washington D.C. pays to true family farmers. Sadly, this disc missed the boat in that department, and this theme of coming up short of potential is mirrored in the musical side as well.

As I mentioned, what's here is fantastic, but it falls far short of "what could have been." Dave Matthews hadn't done many solo gigs prior to this (unless you count the very early '90s), and the performance he gave was quite powerful, including a lot of material from the Lillywhite Sessions which would eventually become "Busted Stuff" (such as "Grace is Gone" and "Bartender," also classics "Satellite," "The Song that Jane Likes," "One Sweet World," and others). Mellencamp played a supercharged set including his classics "Jack and Diane," "Small Town," and "The Authority Song." Neil's set also included feedback-laden takes on "Love and Only Love" and "Rockin' in the Free World," in addition to the farm anthem he plays *every* year: "Mother Earth."

But all of those songs are missing. Granted, including the entire broadcasted portion of the show would have required two discs worth of space, but there is certainly a lot more room on this disc that went unused. Martina McBride gets three songs, as do the Doobie Brothers and Willie, but John, Neil, and Dave (three of the biggest draws Farm Aid has, and who with Willie form the Board of Directors) only get two each, which is a crying shame.

This disc was originally offered by Farm Aid itself as a donation incentive during the 2002 campaign, so in reality it was completed this past summer. Hopefully Farm Aid will get in the habit of releasing these more often, and use them as a tool to both spread word for the Farm Aid cause as well as act as a fund-raiser. How nice would it be for both Farm Aid viewers and attendees to be able to purchase each year's performance on DVD in conjunction with watching or attending the next year's?

CMT butchered its coverage of the 2001 concert, breaking in the middle of many songs to cut to commercials by the likes of Burger King (seriously). Thankfully, they righted the ship a little in 2002 and broadcast the full sets, which were limited to something like 40 minutes each. News about the 2001 DVD didn't break until the fundraising campaign really kicked into high gear in mid 2002, so who knows - maybe a DVD from 2002's performance is waiting a few months down the road?

Other suggestions for improvement in case anyone from Farm Aid or Pioneer Entertainment is watching:

1) This show had firefighters and other volunteers collecting 9/11 donations in firefighter boots out in the gigantic grass parking lot - it would have been nice had a film crew gone through that process to provide more of the perspective of the attendee. It certainly was an unforgettable experience for me, and I think DVD viewers would have appreciated it. Nothing overly long (like this review); if you've seen the opening to Neil's Red Rocks DVD, I'm thinking of something like that.

2) The DVD-Rom feature is limited simply to a link to the Farm Aid website; this could've been expanded to include other groups who participate in and support the Farm Aid cause, such as the Missouri-based organization which produces the red "Stop Factory Farms" shirts, credible sites with more information on corporate farming and the hazards it brings, statistics on environmental and health damage, etc. Many people wouldn't bother with them, but for the little time it'd take to include them, those who would use them would appreciate it.

Getting back to this disc, if you like any of these artists or just great quality music combined with a worthwhile cause, I have to recommend this disc despite its shortcomings. It does a good job of capturing the overall vibe of the evening and includes some incredible performances. You don't have to forget about what you're missing to really enjoy what's here; I still love it and will watch it often.

5 out of 5 stars farm aid 2001 not 2002.......2002-11-24

i just wanted to point out the fact that this is farm aid 2001, from indiana. not this years show from pennsylvania. perhaps that is why dave's performance isnt whats expected. i have no idea why they waited so long to release this, and confuse people enough to think it was this years concert...perhaps this wil make you reconsider your purchase, and wait for the 2002 edition.

3 out of 5 stars Great DVD...if you're not looking for Dave Matthews.......2002-11-22

I just received the DVD in the mail and was a bit disappointed. I read a customers review who was at the concert and he stated that the Dave Matthews Acoustic performance was worth the money alone. I ordered the video largely to see Dave perform his hour plus acoustic performance. Needless to say, it was only two songs by the time it reached the DVD. If you like the other artists, it's a good DVD. If you're looking for Dave Matthews, don't bother.

3 out of 5 stars Where is the rest of the show??.......2002-09-27

I just received this disc, and was incredibly disappointed to see that it is NOT the entire show. In fact, it's not even close! I was at the concert, and was really looking forward to seeing it again. I think that the way this is being sold is somewhat misleading. There was more broadcast on CMT than there is on this disc! It's almost not worth the money....

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Concert DVD.......2005-06-06

Big Country were one of the most under-appreciated bands of the rock era, and if you want proof of this, just pick up this excellent live DVD and see them at the top of their game.

Recorded in Glasgow, Scotland's Barrowlands Ballroom in front of a rabid hometown crowd, this concert shows a band that had been around long enough to give a very polished, professional rock & roll show, while still retaining the energy and passion that made their early concerts so memorable. The first five songs are acoustic performances, giving an earthy, authentic folk-rock feel to classics like "Chance", "Harvest Home", "13 Valleys", and "The Storm". The electric portion of the set kicks off in fine fashion with "Look Away", which has never sounded better, and includes rousing versions of "Wonderland", "Steeltown", and several songs from the Buffalo Skinners LP which sound far better live than they ever did in the studio.

If you think "In A Big Country" was the only good song this band ever recorded, this DVD will be a real eye-opener.
