5 out of 5 stars animamusic 2..great job again.......2007-09-17

Animusic is great again, but "Pipe dreams 2" is too similar to the first one. The only improvement would be to create more songs based on other instruments, not only drums...but I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastically different.......2007-09-06

Loved this CD. It was beautiffuly done; music, animation and color. A very unique experience. Definately the perfect gift for the person who "has everything" Sandra

5 out of 5 stars simply enjoyable.......2007-09-04

I love all the new animated movies, so animated video and computer generated music was very enjoyable to me.I how have both Animusic dvd's,they will be enjoyed many more times.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Awesome, wish it was a lot longer.......2007-08-31

Family has watched it over and over and find new stuff each time. Often put it in during parties; kids and adults are drawn to it. Don't recall the exact DVD length, but it sure seems short. Looking forward to the next one.

4 out of 5 stars Neat.......2007-08-31

This is cool to watch once or twice. Intriguing. Very geeky. This DVD is not for everybody. My children all enjoyed it, but it's not riveting, so my husband could only stand about 3 minutes of it.

Watching Animusic is like being mesmerized by the world's most elaborate Rube Goldberg devices: You're so astonished by their ingenuity that you can't look away. This "computer animation video album" is the brainchild of Wayne Lytle, a progressive-rock keyboardist and 1988 graduate of Cornell University's Program of Computer Graphics. Modifying techniques originally applied to the visualization of scientific data, Lytle partnered with graphic artist and 3D modeler Dave Crognale to create elaborate virtual stage sets and imaginary musical instruments that are driven via MIDI interface to virtually "play" the music that Lytle has composed for them. "The music drives the instruments," explains Lytle in his engaging DVD commentary, "and not the other way around." Using proprietary software called MIDImotion™, Lytle and Crognale have invented self-playing musical instruments that exist in a magical realm of musical and mathematical precision, perfectly synchronized to the kind of fully-synthesized prog-rock that Lytle obviously enjoys (and if you're a fan of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, you will, too). It's the kind of audiovisual bombast that appeals to some more than others (and there's something oddly impersonal about removing humans from the performance of music), but Animusic is so intricately clever that anyone can be captivated by the meticulous novelty of these beautifully engineered musical marvels.

Take, for example, the most popular track, "Pipe Dream," in which thousands of animated balls take on a life of their own, popping out of an intricate system of pipes and barrels and bouncing, with percussive precision, onto all varieties of strings, drums, xylophones, timbales, cowbells... it's just hypnotically amazing. The same holds true for all of these videos, and while the colorful 3D rendering of Animusic (first released in 2001) is no longer state-of-the-art, the underlying mechanics remain timelessly appealing. For this special edition DVD released in 2004, Lytle opens his toy-box to reveal the creative process of Animusic from conceptual drawings to final 3D rendering. There's also a "solo-cam" function allowing viewers to switch angular focus from one instrument to another, along with animated set-construction demonstrations to show how everything fits together in the realm of Animusic. The 5.1-channel surround mix makes Animusic a perfect demonstration disc for high-end video systems (this is nothing if not a geek's delight), and Lytle's first animation (from 1996) is included along with a sneak-peek at Animusic 2, the follow-up DVD released in 2005. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Animusic is fun to watch again and again.......2007-09-17

This computer animation dvd is awesome in its detail. I do imagine to create for real such animation (animatronics maybe) like a new attraction in a park like Disneyland. The music is great and the fact that you can change your point of view is a plus. I wish it could be a bit longer.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this if you like your music to be FUN!.......2007-09-09

The title says it all. I would buy this if it cost twice as much.

And the second one gets the same recommend.

4 out of 5 stars awesome video.......2007-08-29

i saw a preview of animusic on pbs. after looking it up, i decided to buy this and the sequel. it is visually amazing, and the music is pretty cool too. i put these on when i have people over as background music and something to watch that doesn't require a lot of attention! i highly reccomend these to anyone who truly enjoys music and/or graphic/computer art.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm missing something..........2007-07-29

I work at Best Buy, and we have clips of these running constantly it seems. Maybe the oversaturation is the problem, but I honestly couldn't understand why anyone would buy this- It has no plot, of course, but the music isn't good, and the video is just weird. When would you watch this? Stoned and lonely? Anyways, the weird "string-instrument-pogo-stick things" are extremely annoying, I don't understand that segment at all.
the one with the balls flying through the chutes and playing the drum set was semi-captivating, but again, the music is lame.
Sure, it took a lot of time and effort to produce this I'd assume, but it just doesn't seem like something anyone would want to buy. There really isn't anything appealing about this.
Again, maybe I just don't get it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic animation!.......2007-08-23

These videos are wonderful entertainment for all ages. Our kids and grandkids love them! We are talking an age range from 2 year olds, pre-teens, teenagers, young adults through the grandparents. Since the videos have arrived, they are the most sought after DVDs in the house. When guests arrive, they are brought out. I'd say, these videos were one of the best entertainment investments we have made this year. I personally have seen them dozens of times and am still transfixed while they are playing. I highly recommend them for all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Way cool, for a little while.......2007-08-10

I got into watching this through apple's site when I was upgrading my Quicktime and was like wow, now this is cool. So went ahead and got it and it is cool. Some more entertaining then others. The music is very midi, like on the early days of the web. I watched it on my big screen and it looks real good. So far no one, including myself, has sat for more than 3 animations in a row. I like it and enjoyed it and will keep it as a permanent part of my DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet music .......2007-06-13

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-02-04

A friend loaned us Animusic II and my husband and I absolutely LOVE it. We have played it over and over, sometimes we watch it and most times we just listen to it. It's very inventive. Wayne Lylte and friends are brilliant. We intend to buy both I and II.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, was I pleasantly surprised!.......2006-01-05

I've always enjoyed The Mind's Eye videos, immensely. My daughter (4 years old) also has become fascinated with these videos. I purchased Animusic hoping for something similarly entertaining, and WOW! was I pleasantly surprised (my daughter was, too!) I have a musical background having played in many orchestras, and I also love new age type music. I have often imagined how musical sounds might be visualized, and this video does an amazing job of handing this impression to the listener/viewer on a silver platter. The synchronization is truly amazing and the music is not only soothing, but entertaining when visualized. The descriptions of the created pieces, given in a separate narration and provided by the creator, is very informative and gives refreshing insight into why things were made and presented the way we see them, and what some of it all means. I can't recommend this video highly enough, and I can't wait for more of the same to be produced!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-10

5 out of 5 stars Animation Teacher loves this.......2004-04-15

I teach a computer animation class and my students love this. What a great inspiration for them.

5 out of 5 stars Whoo! Animusic rocks the house!.......2004-02-26

"Animusic" stunned me the first time I had seen it! I kept seeing the "Future Retro" being shown over and over on TV along with the "Aqua Harp". I was amazed. My favorite music video on this DVD is "Stick Figures." There is the bass guitar with arms playing itself as you see on the front cover. It makes an awesome sound. As Wayne Lytle said in the commentary on this DVD, at first you might laugh and then say "Wow, that's pretty neat." He also said that some people called that "Mr. Bass Man." It's more than neat! It rocks all the way baby. Such neat details in all instruments. The instruments play themselves with such unbelievable realism. Neat colors, lighting, score, rhythm, and syncopation all the way! Here is how I rank the music videos with 1 being the best:
1. Stick Figures
2. Future Retro
3. Drum Machine
4. Pipe Dream
5. Acoustic Curves
6. Aqua Harp
7. Harmonic Voltage
If you agree with me or not on my choices you will agree they are all splendiferously superb! I reccommed this to anybody who loves computer animation and music, and to the people who don't and see what they think! This needs more recognition. Thank goodness for Animusic!
