5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-28

Petrucci and Johnson are my favorite to round out the triads in Steve and Joe's shredfests. Petrucci is a class act and an ensemble player who is not a limelight hog or a show-off. All of the solo acts are great, and the jam session is a classic! The camerawork on the DVD is good -- aspiring guitar gods be able to "see" stuff close up they wouldn't get on a CD or at a live show.

4 out of 5 stars Better with Petrucci than with Malmstein.......2007-05-14

I bought this a week after seeing the 2007 live G3 show in Boston. I had been disapointed with the show in Boston because of poor acoustics and sound mixing at the Orpheum. However, this DVD from thier Tokyo show is great and cost wayyyyy less than seeing them live. The sound quality is fantastic; the mix is perfect and the camera work is VERY good. In JP's set the camera at one point lines up perfectly to see JP and Dave Larou wailing over frets with synchronised speed and the effect is pretty exciting for a player who is watching. The Vai set is typical stuff and for me is OK but Satch's set is VERY good, maybe better than his set on the Satch, Vai, Johnson DVD. I had paid no attention to Petrucci till seeign the live show and this DVD has earned him my respect as a truly talented and professional player. His set alone is worth the price of this DVD. I also have the G3 DVD with Satch, Vai and Eric Johnson. That one is IMHO the best of the G3 concerts available on DVD. The Tokyo show is the second best. I saw the one with Malmstein and was very disapointed with Malmstein. One last note... of the 3 DVDs I mention here, the Satch, Vai, Johnson DVD has the best G3 jam at the end. The chemistry of those 3 in the jam's classic blues forum just worked better. Even Vai who is anything but a traditional blues player kicked out some of the coolest blues/rock licks I've ever heard; my favorite having a lot of Jimmy Page flavor to it.

5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2007-05-06

Joe always brings the big show for the G3. These guys have such great sound. You don't have to be a guitar player to appreciate the effort that's put into this show because the music is so good. Not every song will grab you, but the ones that do will get into your bones!

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever!.......2007-01-25

This is the greatest rock guitar album ever! Satriani and Vai produce their usual high quality stuff, but the revelation is Petrucci, as he brings together all those years of experience with Dream Theater et al to produce two 10 minute tracks of sheer virtuosity: an amalgamation of skill, passion, power, and control. The conclusion of the three in concert together is a real joy as they take three old favourites (Hendrix, ZZ Top, and Deep Purple) and dance new rythms around old standards with delightful skill. Buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Incredible DVD.......2007-01-06

Im not big on words so I'll make this short. This was one of the most incredible G3 concerts I have ever seen. Most of the songs are ones I like and John Petruccis guitar playing is phenomenal. I used to think Steve Vai was the best guitar player in the world. Mr. John Petrucci has me thinking twice about that. He only plays 2 songs on the DVD but they are very long and played flawlessly as far as I can see. I have watched this DVD at least 3x now and will probably do so many more times in the future. This one is a no brainer. Buy it.

If musical notes were gold nuggets, then King Midas would look like a pauper next to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Performing both individually and together in this 112-minute concert, the three hard rock guitarists prove their virtuosity beyond a doubt; despite the obvious antecedents, including Jimi Hendrix (they play both "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" during the "G3 Jam" session that comes at the end) and Eddie Van Halen, all three play with the kind of swiftness, precision, and overall technical proficiency that very few others can match. Yet the non-stop, high-volume speed riffing (Malmsteen is the most egregious when it comes to playing notes for notes' sake, but all three are culpable) eventually proves to be a whole lot of sound and fury, signifying almost nothing. There's little to speak of in terms of songs or melodies (and no vocals, other than during the jam section), and, notwithstanding Malmsteen's pseudo-classical bent, not much to distinguish the three, either. The chops are awesome, dude--but in the end, even die-hards could be forgiven for thinking, "Thanks, fellas, that was really, really impressive. But do you think you could play some music now?" --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Speed Kills? Not at this concert!.......2007-06-24

I grew up on early British Blues, and have always loved to see the most innovative and skilled guitarists. Though concert wary, I have nonetheless been able to see Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, SRV, Steve Morse, Albert King, B.B. King, Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana, Les Claypool (OK, he's a bass player), John Petrucci, and many other masters of the guitar. I went to this concert at the Fillmore in Denver, and it was a real epiphany.

While there's a critic in every crowd, here's the bottom line: this was the runner-up for the most talent I have seen play TOGETHER at one event. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck (with Terry Bozzio on drums) takes first from 1989. The G3 fellows were flawless. Truly spectacular. Comparisons of Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen are difficult because they each are brilliant in different and diverse ways, and really what's the point? I hadn't kept up on Yngwie for more than a decade, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But he was just phenomenal. And he really added a different voicing to the jams at the end of the concert. I don't even like Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World", but these three made it work.

So, is the DVD a good representation of the live concert? Absolutely. Not one song was edited out (though Vai's playing with his tongue during the jam was not shown). Malmsteen's set was put in a different order ("Far Beyond the Sun" was not his finale, look at the start of "Adagio" to see him inspecting his cut finger from ripping off the strings during the guitar smashing which happened earlier in the concert). "Adagio" was his encore.

Now I have to check the box that says "I am over the age of 13". Yes, by 44 years. My college students have me listening to DragonForce and other modern "guitar gods". Hmmmm? Speed kills? Yes! Except in the hands of the most experienced drivers. Take a ride with Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen and get a new perspective.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SHOW.......2007-05-25

If you are looking at this DVD, you probably already know who these guys are. It starts off good with Satriani doing his thing, but Vai and Malmsteen steal the show. The jam at the end with all three is just a bonus. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Remember these are three distinct styles.......2007-05-13

I have read a lot of bashing on Yngwie here and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. I find it funny that some self professed guitarists review this G3 album and talk about his redundancy and ho hum style of play. Yngwie is Yngwie and he is worthy of playing with Satriani and Vai or they wouldn't have asked him to play with them. For the guitarists that review this and slam Yngwie, when are we going to see your name next to Satriani and Vai.

With that being said, yes Yngwie is somewhat of a throwback but I think it really adds to the diversity of this show. I am very happy I bought this and would recommend to anyone. Some good stage antics but definitely some great playing. I am now going to get the other two DVD's with great anticipation. I have Petrucci on Jazz CD's and have not heard Eric Johnson.....at least I don't think I have.

I would really love to see some other guitarists in the lineup in the future..Robert Fripp, Ritchie Blackmore (if he still plays), Stanley Clarke on bass (I don't know if he is still around) and possibly Al Dimeola if he still plays. If none of these guys are available then there are definitely many many talented players I would like to see interract with Vai and Satriani.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2007-05-06

Joe and Steve are brilliant, as usual. They get such great tone live, which is hard, but great showmanship too! Yngwie seems to like to kick stuff but has amazing dexterity and range of style.

4 out of 5 stars funny stuff.......2007-04-04

I watched the Petrucci show and then this one back to back and it's pretty interesting how the "guest" really changes the dynamic. In Tokyo, Vai was the most outlandish and Petrucci was virtuosic but kinda boring stage-presence-wise. Satch was Satch. On this one Yngwie is doing all the crazy acrobatics and so Vai kinda lays back, maybe it would'va been too dangerous for 2 guitars to be swinging around all over the place. On the first jam I also think Vai was kinda intimidated by Yngvie's furious shredding and took a few minutes to get warmed up. Joe pretty much ignored Yngwie and just did his own thing, which was incredibly musical.

(Spoiler)

at the end credits -Vai to Satch - "your voodoo solo was incredible!"
Yngwie: "I didn't even hear it..."
uh huh

(end spoiler)

Anyways this is the most entertaining on a "shred-Liberace" level of the 2 dvds. I recommending fast forwarding otherwise it gets to be a little monotonous. I haven't seen the Eric Johnson one yet, out of all 5 guitarists he's my favorite so that'll be a separate review...

Now if only Allan Holdsworth would be on a G3 show, and instead of "Foxy Lady" being the jam song, they all played on "Ruhkukah"...
(Vai would probably drop all the antics and play like his life depended on it, Satch would play blues licks and excerpts from Mystical Potato and Allan would wince because he was off by a 32nd note in a quintuplet figure...)

5 out of 5 stars And Then Some.......2006-03-26

After reading some of the other reviews I really don't have much more to add. However in my opinion it's as good as the other's have said and then some. I own three of these 3G concert versions, and this is my favorite because of the jam at the end with all three. It's too bad they didn't make that a tridition with all three, but the other two are damn good and well worth purchasing on their own merit....A good collection to own if you're in to exteremly hot guitar licks....

5 out of 5 stars Get it NOW!.......2006-02-13

This dvd is a little more bluesy than G3 Live in Denver but then again, that Swedish wildman Yangtse Slipsteam isn't here and he is soley missed. Eric Johnson is a fine player but he has all the charisma of a boiled egg. But he is NOT a "shredder" and that is saying something. So much so that I'll say it again... he is NOT a "shredder" so if you have any old paperwork and insurance policies you want destroyed, I suggest you buy one from an office supplies store cuz Eric couldn't make it over to your place anyway. When asked why, he said: "I've got better things to do than cut up all your old phone bills."

It was great to hear Steve Vai play the blues on 'Red House' and he actually kept in the background whilst looking uncannily like he did in "Crossroads" when Ralph Macchio whooped his butt in the guitar duel. But then again, it's not very often that Steve DOESN'T look like himself. This makes me wonder why they didn't get Ralph Macchio to be the third guitarist instead of Eric. Maybe he was making Karate Kid Part 6, but that's no excuse when there's a backlog of paperwork to be shredded... Buy this disc today but don't expect to see too much martial arts or office equipment.

4 out of 5 stars You have to get this G3 DVD and then get the other two.......2006-01-19

If you are not an instrumental rock'n roll fan and your blood doesn't boil with some extreme overdrive and other guitar effects, this is not for you. If you are a rock guitar player, this is a must-have. Satriani and Vai, as the backbone of the G3 extravaganza, deliver some of their famous songs with the usual energy and virtuosity. Eric Johnson, I have to say, has a very different personality, melodic approach, and technique from Vai and Satriani, but I think this contrast makes the first edition of G3 a unique jewel that you don't want to miss. Additional material in the DVD is OK. It could be a lot better.

4 out of 5 stars G3 evolutions.......2006-01-17

well,

i love all g3s and I have to say that everyone of them has his own good and bad things...

on this i would say eric johnson ( I KNOW HE IS A GREAT GUITARRIST AND GOD BLESS HIM) really doesnt match with satch and vai... because he's more the calm guy with his headphones on ( he has had a tinnitus for years.... thats why) bu yngwie matches more.... but of course yngwie is not that melodic .... eric acts really as a pole of calmness in this concert...

but the things i like on the old g3 more is that satriani had still his dimarzio PAF Pro bridge humbucker pickup and not the new PAF Joe that he designed and first used on the denver-yngwie concert.... a good listener can hear the difference immediateley... and i didnt like it...

i love his old "flying in a blue dream" mellow-gain sound

and not this new hard rock gain like on all the new g3s

about vai i just can say he is awesome...
maybe not on this dvd... ( ok for the love of god is an awesome song but thats it) but certainly on the yngwie-g3 and the newest tokyo g3.... vai is just a dream ... EVO rocks... and so does PIA and all the other JEMs

i just can say that if you have one g3 you should go for the rest... so the other 2 ... then you will have the best of every guitarist and fun for many many weeks, months, years, lifetimes...

so have fun

PS: 4 stars because alone its not perfect... they only perfect if you have all the g3s
