Description

One of the most dynamic R&B duos of the '60s and early '70s, Ike and Tina Turner were a force to be reckoned with. Their live shows, nothing short of legendary, were high-octane performances of carefully orchestrated music from Ike turner combined with the raw sexual energy of vocalist Tina Turner. This spectacular CD/DVD set is from Holland in 1971, during the peak of Ike & Tina's tumultuous career.

4 out of 5 stars Before an audience of Euro-zombies, Ikettes & Tina deliver a terrific show.......2006-05-28

The minute the 3 pink Ikettes prance onto the stage, you know you're in for a show. They can shake that thing. The Dutch audience is a doornail, but Tina acts like they're up and screaming. The DVD is cut to a TV-friendly 1 hour, but the CD includes 4 extra songs. Sound is good. Sympathy for the Ike? This is too much woman for any man.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-01-27

"Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71" - even in this cut state - is probably the only full-length Ike & Tina concert available on DVD today, so for that alone, it's well-worth owning.

It's all the more essential, though, because it's truly a blast - this is the most energetic, soulful, joyous live concerts I think I've ever seen - and the songs themselves are just crazy, vibrant, brilliant performances by one of the most talented musical outfits of the 1970s.

Although the predominantly Dutch audience doesn't quite seem to 'get' it at the beginning - whenever should such a concert be a seated gig, anyway? - it doesn't take in the least from our appreciation of the atmosphere, and, even though there are one or two glaring flaws in the DVD presentation itself (several of the more noteworthy tracks such as "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and "Shake a Tail Feather" are missing, why is this??), it still doesn't stop this from being a powerful and wonderful celebration of music and dance.

Tina's on top of her game here, to watch her is to really understand the love a great performer has of his genre. From her entrance, right up to the end of "I Smell Trouble", there's not one part of her body that isn't in constant rhythm with the music, and her voice is amazing - raspy and raw, with a power behind it that lends so much more depth to the songs than many of their original performers lacked. The dance routines with the Ikettes, thanks to what's now a more amateur and simple style of camerawork, are powerful and energetic; you want to get up off the couch and dance with them! "Proud Mary" and the amazing "I Wanna Take You Higher" are examples, but even on the more downbeat tracks such as "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Come Together" (the Beatles, except better! Who knew?!) the masterful combinations of musical arrangement, vocal and choreography show us precisely why the Ike & Tina Turner revue was such a respected live act.

This is an excellent DVD, the restoration - although not perfect - has a great audio quality, and the visuals are just fine. The CD is a nice addition, though it would have been better, obviously, to include all the tracks on the DVD. Special Features are interesting, including a great short of the Ike & Tina performance at the 1971 'Soul to Soul' concert in Africa. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough; even with its shortcomings, it's still a treasure and a great recording of one of the best live acts of all time.

5 out of 5 stars finally !.......2005-07-16

Finally an Ike and Tina concert available on DVD. the quality of the film is not what we are used to in 2005 but the disc sounds and looks great if you keep in mind that this was recorded over 30 years ago...
Disc is accompanied by a great CD and a very nice booklet. If you like this set, don't forget to buy the "Soul to soul" DVD also released by the same company.

5 out of 5 stars a gem to cherish.......2005-01-28

As any visual footage on Ike & Tina Turner is pretty scarce, I guess we may be thankful for this great DVD. Their 1971-show being integrally covered by Dutch television, it reveals Ike & Tina supported by a pretty good band and, last but not least, by the marvellous Ikettes. All this at a time their performance must have been at its very peak.

5 out of 5 stars 'Bout Time.......2004-12-03

This is some of the best footage of Ike and Tina live I have seen. As a huge Tina Turner fan, I have been searching for a long time for the old stuff. This DVD/CD combo is fantastic. It shows Tina during her peak in the Revue and you can see how her performances back in the seventies have inspired stars of today to take a leaf out of Tinas book when it comes to giving a fantastic show. Beyonce is obviously a fan of the Tina moves.

This DVD shows Ike and Tina performing some of their greatest hits on stage. Unlike the CD part of the combo, you get to hear Tina speak and interact with the audience, which is fantastic and in the end is what a live concert is all about. I was sad to see they don't have the footage of RESPECT, IVE BEEN LOVING YOU TOO LONG or LAND OF 1000 DANCES on the DVD. Loving you too long, although a song Tina ended up hating to perform, was great to watch, and vocally she was amazing. Tina looks amazing on this DVD and I was smiling all the way through.

The CD is a typical live CD of the Revue. It has had most if not all of Tinas interaction with the audience edited out, like the start of Ooh Poo Pah Doo, but the sound is fantastic and her voice on this disc is AMAZING! The raspy, rocky, r&b vocals that Tina is famous for sends shivers down my spine.

My only main complaint with this combo is the editing out the songs mentioned earlier. The track listing on the DVD is also slightly out of order, and accoridng to the AMAZON song listing, is missing Shake a Tail Feather and another track. A typo perhaps?

Overall a GREAT DVD for anyone who wants to watch an awesome concert by a fantastic group. Tina was and will always be great on stage. Highlights to watch out for are the two encores where the audience begs Tina for more, Proud Mary of course is always a crowd pleaser, and also watch for right at the end when everyone but Tina is left on stage and Tina goes off to shake hands with the audience. A definate sign of her fabulous future! And the bonus footage of Tina at Soul to Soul. An awesome performance and she looks great. Gotta love that white and brown dress Tina! Also something that blew my mind is Tina doing Come Together. This is the first time I have seen footage of Tina doing that song, and she does an amazing job. Hard to describe in words how awesome it is, but you can actually GET the meaning of song the way she sings it. She kills the Beatles any day. And the moves through out this DVD rock!!! We need more footage like this to see that Tina was the first to do most of the moves groups are doing today!

Heres to more Ike and Tina concert footage in the future!!
