The Greatest.......2005-12-05
I've worked in and around the music industry for many years. I used to, in fact, manage a mid-level rock'n'roll band (not mentioning any names, so please stop pestering), but I love and appreciate all types of music. Kenny G is probably the greatest living saxophone player, and yes I realize that his critical reputation is not all that positive. But time will tell exactly where Kenny G fits into the pantheon of great jazz horn players; my feelings are very strong that he will eventually be ranked among the "giants" - if not for being a true innovator (though his unmistakable tone is inarguably unlike any other), but for his songwriting and general presentation of his music.
Of course, music is primarily to be listened to, which is why I held out for a long time before adding this dvd to my vast collection of Kenny music on CD. If you could wear CDs out, I probably would've had to buy three or four copies of his "Live" album by now. There is, as with so many artists, a great deal gained by hearing formerly studio-bound music performed for a live audience. Suffice it to say, and my 5 star rating conveys this I'm sure, my only regret is not having purchased this DVD companion sooner. Sometimes seeing a performer so in touch with his audience, as he communicates musically, is a vital part of the experience. Such is the case with Mr. Gorelick (yes, that's what the 'G' stands for, for those of you that always thought Kenny was just trying to be mysterious and cool!).
And a note to a reviewer who claimed some other musician holds the record for 'longest single note held' - check Guiness and you'll see what the truth is. Besides, it's not exactly evidence of talent or artistry to hold a note for 45 minutes anyway, I am disappointed someone with Kenny's integrity would even participate in something that basically amounts to a sideshow act. Trust me, I can overlook it.
The magesty of Kenny G.......2004-07-05
This DVD has everything a Kenny G fan could want. Live music showcasing the talents of Mr G and his wonderful band, interviews with Kenny, band members and guests, and a very good audio transfer.
Complaining about too many interviews pieced in between is nonsense. The interviews come in just as the song finishes, with the applause of the crowd fading into the background. Is applause REALLY crucial? I think not.
This DVD is a wonderful collection of live Kenny G music, with everything from latin funk to slow blues - a must for fans. If you're not a fan, leave this one alone - it probably won't convert you. But if you like jazz music, or Kenny, then this disc is great. Laid back show - perfect for Sunday afternoon viewing or as background. Much recommended.
Too much playing not enough talking.......2004-06-09
Kenny G live? Why? He's bad enough on cd. Why in the hell would you wanna hear him live. His tone is just as bad, hollow, empty, souless, despite what KG supporters think. His fans must really be tone deaf not to hear his unmistakable lack of tonality. And his pitch was everywhere but in-tune. By the way, KG does not hold the record for holding out the longest note, Rashaad Kirk does. Only difference, Kirk played it for near 2 hours with 5 saxophones at the same time and it was in tune. KG was 45 min. 30 cents sharp, with a soprano( which is not hard to blow through one of those)If you like music with quality, DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT I REAPEAT DOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOT GET THIS ALBUM. If you're a tone def KG fan, scrap a rusty nail accross a chalk board and save yourself some money.

QUIETLY POWERFUL FILM.......2005-05-24
Made for TV back in 1991, CAROLINA SKELETONS is based on the book by David Stout, and inspired by a true story. Set in the 1960's South, the story focuses on the execution of a 14 year old African-American lad who supposedly brutally slaughtered two little girls. Thirty years later, the boy's brother, now a colonel in the Green Berets, has come home to visit his dying mother who asks him to find out who really killed the girls. While the movie has its share of cliches and stereotypes, it nonetheless has some powerful and tragic scenes. The execution of the little boy in itself is terrifying, but even more so is the sheriff's insistence that his own son (a closet friend of the condemned) witness the execution is ghastly. Lou Gossett Jr. brings a stoic strength in his role as the Green Beret, whose search for the truth uncovers those Carolina Skeletons. Bruce Dern is very good as the sheriff, who is the little boy forced to witness the execution; he too wants to find out from his now institutionalized father, what really transpired. Melissa Leo gives an effective performance as Dern's daughter who aids Gossett in his quest for the truth, and Richard Jenkins is vile as a good old boy out to stop Gossett from finding the truth. No special effects, no intense action sequences, CAROLINA SKELETONS brings home the sad truth of a country riddled with hate, and is tragic in its exposition of such truth.
Learn from History.......2000-01-29
Louis Gossett, Jr. is the star of Carolina Skeletons and gives his usual excellent performance as a man returning to his small South Carolina town in 1964 who is asked by his dying mother to prove that his older brother executed thirty years previous was wrongly accused. Carolina Skeletons is a made-for-television movie that is somewhat lacking in some of the production values of more expensively produced films. It has several scenes that come to a dramatic climax and then fade to black. I found myself expecting commercials. The movie is worthy of attention because it reminds us of the unjust treatment of African Americans in our country - especially in the South. As citizens, we must always be aware of injustice in order that it be identified and vanquished.
