This DVD rocks..........2007-01-12
I'm a recording engineer working in Nashville. I've recently decided to improve my mixing skills. This DVD took me to the next level. I know what your thinking. "It's a lot of money!" Well the knowledge is well worth it. The video is over-produced but that's easy to over look. The bottom line is that Charles Dye explains things very clearly and makes it easy to learn some great techniques to add to your own music.

I work full-time in a world-class recording facility in Midtown Manhattan. I'm an engineer. What does this mean? People pay me to make their records sound as good as humanly possible. And I reccommend Mix It Like a Record to aspiring, young engineers.

I am a musician that records my own projects at home. I have read many different books and articles on mixing, but always find that the advice is too generalized or hard to imagine in my mind.
This DVD goes step by step through the mix for a single song with examples of how each track is handled and how each plug-in changes the sound. Beyond that, the DVD also has all the ProTools sessions that you can open yourself and work with on your own computer.
I have found the information invaluable and it has really helped me to see how a professional mixer - even one that the "old-timers" don't respect - puts a song together.

This DVD is nothing more than a Pro Tools infomercial, and an unbearably pretentious one at that. At $30-$40 it might be worthwhile, but $134?!? It spends a lot of time focusing on basic concepts, while providing little information that will be of value to a professional looking to improve his craft. It promotes over-use of plug-ins and encourages beginners to think that a fully blown Pro Tools HD system is the ONLY way to go.
In my opinion, Charles Dye is NOT a mixer that beginning audio engineers should seek to emulate, as he has zero experience with analog techniques or systems other than Pro Tools, his work epitomizes much of what is wrong with today's pop sound, and he is laughed at by old-school engineers.

I have been mixing independant artists for about 7 years. I have read books, sat in on other mixers sessions, asked questions on internet forums, you name it, anything to learn more I've done it. I can honestly say that I learned more in this one product than all that other stuff combined. Charles has done what, so far, no one else has been able to, by putting techniques, methods, and concepts as well as actual results ( audio samples) all in a dvd that you can access over and over. I belive that if any mixer at any level goes into this product with the intent to learn something they are going to be more than satisfied.

Mixing & Mastering DVD Course.......2007-09-10
This DVD would be good for anyone new to the art of mixing and mastering. In the mixing section, it gives a fairly good description of some of the techniques used. However, in the mastering section, it only focuses on describing plug-ins used in mastering. If you are looking for something on mastering, this is not for you. It seems as though they were advertising the plug-ins and forgot about describing techniques. But as I said, this is for anyone with no prior knowledge of the artform.
Only Software Mixing & Mastering Course I've Ever Found.......2006-04-26
Before I got this video I had read the Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski and Mastering Audio Bob Katz. Both of those books seem to be pretty well known and are standards the field. However, both of them are oriented towards hardware analog mixing. Now I guess you can argue that the principles of mixing and mastering are the same no matter what tools you're using. However, if you want to do mixing and mastering in software, that is the focus of Mixing & Mastering - Know It All! As the author says, the video is not about a particular software product. However, he does manage to use a lot of the best known products--Pro Tools, Cubase, and Sonar for mixing as well as Sound Forge, Audition, and Ozone for mastering. The course is organized in a framework that seems kind of simple at first. However, within that simple framework there is a lot of sophistication. For me one of the best examples was the use of dynamics. The example starts with creating a percussion submix and applying compression. Then it expands into showing how to do New York compression. The next step is to add a side chain. Finally, the CamelSpace plug-in is added to show just how wild you can make a simple drum mix. I thought I knew a fair amount about the subject before I bought the video, but I learned a lot.

This course packs in a lot of material about Pro Tools, making it a great value for the money. I bought a Pro Tools video earlier for about the same price from another (better known) company, and it only covered the material you get in the Quick Start section of this course. The course starts with the basics, but pretty rapidly moves on to mixing and mastering. It also has very complete sections on midi and loops as well as software synthesizers and rewire. I was also pleased by the production quality of the videos. This company apparently uses a professional voiceover person, and she knows how to keep the tutorials interesting. In the other video course I took, I'm sure the narrator was a great audio engineer, but his deadpan voice got really boring after awhile. This is a lot of material to absorb, so you have to stay focused. But if you do, you'll be well rewarded.
Beware if you're a Pro Tools newbie!!.......2006-02-01
I just purchased the Pro Tools 7 "know-it-all" DVD from digital music doctor and have watched a number of the modules. The quality of the DVD is okay and the speaker/host is very knowledgeable...although they could have run a de-esser on her voice in the final mix! I am pretty new to the Pro Tools world, but not to recording. I had an Alesis ADAT studio for years and have played in bands most of my life. I'm used to being around pro gear and tape recorder products. This DVD instructional program says that it's interactive. Buyer beware. Interactive simply means that you can stop, start, pause, etc., the DVD while you're viewing it. The instructor goes through the material very fast and there is definitely prior knowledge required (in my opinion) to be able to keep up. The examples of anything reviewed are done quickly so you'd better stay focused or you'll be lost. I was looking forward to having this DVD because I have so much to learn. I'm just saying that if your expectation is to have a newbie-friendly DVD instructional course that really goes in-depth into terminology, concepts, and step-by-step procedures, this may not be the DVD for you. It's a nicely done DVD and the instructor knows her stuff. She just goes way too fast and therefore, it's not very useful to me at my level.

I'm Up and Running, Ma........2006-02-11
The production quality is not very good: the colors and shading are noticably washed out and the shots of the screen are notoriously fuzzy (I had to go back and forth to my Pro Tools software to be able to see what they were talking about at times). However, the coverage and perspective they gave me in pulling together all the parts of this complex program was VERY well done. I took an online 12 week course at Berklee College of Music to learn how to use Pro Tools and I don't think that I knew how to pull it all together until this video. I have not compared this to other products so I don't know how it compares. I'm very happy with the time spent on this DVD, however. You need to use the pause button and take notes. Some pretty dense material. Prior nodding familiarity with Pro Tools is recommended. It features version 6.x on a Mac, but as a PC user, I still got 98% of the material. I noticed that the hand clapping finally stopped about a third of the way thru the movie. They must have reviewed the earlier takes during the filming. THAT was annoying, but I'll get over it.

This DVD is a completely amateur production. I've seen better high school video productions. The material was not presented in a straightforward manner. There is more footage of Bob & Brett than of the Pro-Tools interface. There is little to no attention paid to detail or accuracy. For example, they show you how to arm the click track for recording as if they were going to record audio to the click track itself. Brett probably says "So" and claps his hands about 50 times. I don't know the total for sure because I couldn't stomach the whole DVD. It looked as if they had no script at all. They were kind of just winging it as they went along. It was a very unprofessional and uninformative production overall. Not worth the DVD case it came in.

This is a joke! It is a very very very beginner level in which you can read from the textbook by yourself instead of spend $30 on this DVD. I do not recommend it to anyone. You will not learn how to edit or mix at all. It is just the DVD telling you what Pro Tools LE is. Then you have to buy another DVD to learn how to use Pro Tools! What a waste!

This DVD does exactly what it promises. After using it, I styled my hair, and it really looked way better than it usually does. I have to admit, there will be some days where I may take a few short cuts, since this is the professional job, but going through the styling process step by step really does give superior results.
This DVD is thorough. It takes you through the whole styling process one time, and then gives a short review. I've gotten several compliments since using these tecniques.
