Product Description

Based on a true story, this is the comedic saga of four Jamaican athletes going to extremes to compete as bobsled racers at the Winter Olympics. With few resources and virtually no clue about winter sports, it's an uphill course for this troupe from the tropics who are sliding on thin ice as they go for the gold in Calgary, Canada. Refusing to let anything stand in their way, these four Jamaicans enlist the help of a down-and-out ex-champion American slider named Irv. Unavoidably drawn back to a sport he had come to loathe, Irv is faced with coaching a team of complete novices. But once committed, he is determined to turn them around and to somehow right the wrongs of his own failed career. It's a bumpy ride but with pride, determination, and dignity, the bobsledders make their impossible dreams come true.

Amazon.com

Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good, and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh

Love this movie. Very happy with this DVD. I had the same movie before but for some reason it would not play any more. Never had that happen with any other DVD I own.

Excellent movie based on a true story about a group of Jamaican athletes who come together under difficult circumstances to compete in the olympics as a bobsled team! Very humorous, good comedy with very good acting. They picked all the right actors for each character. There are obstacles to overcome amongst themselves, in addition to external forces. You will applaud the ending!

The Heart of the Game is, simply put, one of the most enjoyable and joyous documentaries ever made. For several years, the movie follows a girls' basketball team called the Rough Riders from a Seattle high school as they strive to win the state championship, and in the process discovers heart-wrenching twists of fate, vivid and compelling characters, colorful dialogue, and a nail-biting conclusion. The Heart of the Game starts with Bill Resler, a professor of tax law who agrees to become the head coach for the girls' basketball program at Roosevelt High School. He swiftly challenges the players with demanding drills and wild metaphors (each year he picks a different theme for the team, from "pack of wolves" to "tropical storm")--and the girls take him on, pulling together into a potent team. But when a girl from a poor neighborhood named Darnellia Russell joins the Rough Riders, her skill takes their fortunes even higher--until she unexpectedly has to quit. From there, the movie takes more and more compelling turns, carried along by the winning personalities of Bill and Darnellia. The Heart of the Game, like Hoop Dreams, works first as an exhilarating sports movie, but has a rich human story that will make it fascinating to people who don't care about basketball. First-time filmmaker Ward Serrill lucked out with the material, but he clearly labored to shape what must have been thousands of hours of footage into a taut, headlong movie. His labor paid off. See this movie. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Go courtside for a true-life rush like no other in this passionate and inspirational documentary in the same powerful tradition as HOOP DREAMS. Director Ward Serrill brings the camera up close and personal to capture the Roosevelt Roughriders girls' basketball team during six turbulent seasons, taking us far beyond the court. You'll meet Bill Resler, the tax professor turned hard-driving unorthodox coach who turns the team around — and Darnellia Russell, the talented inner-city tough girl who battles off-court threats to regain eligibility. You'll meet a real team full of drive, toughness and the unbridled desire to make history.

5 out of 5 stars Heart of the Game Review.......2007-09-07

Heart of the Game is an engrossing story of girls' high school basketball and personal drama. We enjoyed it completely - and not just because it is the story of a local team.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teams.......2007-09-05

This is a great movie for your team to watch and mines did. They thought it was done very good and had some very good points.

5 out of 5 stars Teamwork leads to success.......2007-08-03

The Roosvelt High School girls basketball team overcame many adversities through a a united effort by the young women, the coach and parents and the school to demonstrate that underdogs can win.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-07-30

This story is a great inspiration for any girls basketball team. It puts life and the game of basketball in perspective. It tells the true story about the ups and downs of the game we all love. It teaches athletes about the power of hard work, team work and belief.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling true story.......2007-07-21

This is a documentary with a heart. It's about a Seattle high school girls' basketball team, the Roosevelt Roughriders, which is led by a creative and demanding coach named Bill Resler who motivates his team by urging them to "go for the kill" like a "pack of wolves". He sets the basketball standards high, but at the same time he had a lot of compassion and insight into what makes his players tick. When star player Darnellia Russell transfers to Roosevelt, she presents a challenge to Coach Resler. Although supremely gifted as a basketball player, Darnellia has a hard time adjusting to a school which has a high population of upper middle-class white students. Coach Resler teaches her how to be a team player, and encourages her to be tough enough to endure the hard times. This is an inspiring story which shows the importance of mentors for young people during a vulnerable and important time in their lives.

The linguistic ballet of the crossword puzzle and the obsessive minds that wrestle with them are a source of delight in the charming documentary Wordplay. Though there's no story, the movie has a definite hero: Will Shortz, the editor of the New York Times crossword puzzle, universally acknowledged as the pinnacle of crosswords. Shortz comes across as clever but modest; though he's at the top of his particular world, he retains a bemused perspective on that world's limitations. Though speckled with celebrities from former President Bill Clinton to the Indigo Girls, the most engaging interviews are with puzzle creator Merl Reagle (who gives a fascinating on-screen demonstration of how he starts making a puzzle) and the witty and garrulous commentary by the former public editor for the Times, Daniel Okrent. Like many recent documentaries, Wordplay is built around a competition: The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, an annual event started by Shortz and embraced by people who have devoted an alarming amount of their brain space to filling squares with letters. Though the movie is not as emotionally involving as Spellbound--still the ne plus ultra of nerdy documentaries--Wordplay's window into its particular subculture will be enjoyable to non-crossword fans as well as committed puzzleheads.--Bret Fetzer

Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment.......2007-09-13

This movie about serious crossword creators and solvers informs, entertains, and builds to an appropriate climax, the annual Crossword Championships in a cookie cutter hotel in Stamford, CT. Everyone involved -- including President Bill Clinton, his erstwhile opponent Bob Dole, and Jon Stewart -- fits nicely into the mosaic of the story. (The puzzle on the day of the Clinton-Dole election is, in its own small-corner-of-the-universe way, a masterpiece of the art form.) Sure, the players have this little obsession about racing the clock to solve really hard crosswords, but they are also genuinely likeable people and this viewer, at least, came away impressed with their abilities, their sense of humor about their off-beat passion, and, not least, their articulate intelligence. As one who can barely scrape through the Times's Monday and Tuesday puzzles on occasion, I salute them. Wordplay honors them too and does so very, very well. It's a must-see for anyone who's ever puzzled.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but more so if you love crossword puzzles.......2007-07-10

Like Spellbound or Trekkies, this documentary tries to elevate a rather nerdy hobby to the level of high art by exploring the people involved and the obsessive nature of their hobby. As with those two documentaries, you are probably more inclined to enjoy the movie if you share the obsession. Unlike those two documentaries, you may not find this terribly compelling otherwise.

While it has many interesting things about it (the history of the "rules" of Crossword puzzles, the competitions, the crossword puzzle that managed to make BobDole and Clinton equally viable in 1996 for instance) ultimately it's a documentary about people who sit down and write words on square boxes. Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton and the Indigo Girls (Blue state bias?) are normally entertaining personalities, but even they can't make the act of writing words on a piece of paper interesting. You have to give the director credit for trying though. Jon Stewart's mini-freakout is amusing. The shot of the clue and the letters hitting the blank page in computer animation are fun. However, ultimately it feels a lot like those movies where they are "hacking into the system" and trying to make the act of sitting at a computer typing exciting. It's not. Sorry. It's just not.

However, the competition that takes up the last third of the movie is well worth the price. The people involved aren't just obsessed but they are warm and friendly. Sure, trash talking Crossword puzzle fanatics would be funnier, but the fact of the matter is, is that these people like each other; they share an obsession and they genuinely wish each other well - even when losing to each other in these competitions. That amount of camraderie involved in the competition is a rare thing, no matter how many "sportsmanship" lectures get imbibed. To see it as a natural byproduct of the competition is rather sweet.

Still, this is a movie that only Crossword fanatics can love. Those of us who find our joy elsewhere can buy bargain DVDs and watch it in small doses. All of it is good, but none of it is terribly compelling.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful..............2007-07-05

Since I was very young, I have had a love affair with language. Words are such a powerful form of expression [in writing and verbal communication]. Words are a reflection of our times, as well as our culture. Few people know this as well as puzzlemaster for the New York Times, Will Shortz. He is the man behind the weekly crossword puzzle that appears in the publication and also is heard nationally on NPR, every weekend, with his puzzle quiz. Not only are crossword puzzles great for the mind, but they have a huge following that transcends generations and socio/economic backgrounds. For the first time, we see a more intimate side of Mr. Shortz, his formative years, as well as an annual puzzle competition that I would best describe as the Crossword Olympics. It truly is a competitive sport. There are also great, humorous moments in this film with banter from comedian Jon Stewart, former United States President Bill Clinton, the Indigo Girls and a slew of other fans of Will Shortz and his puzzle.

This film was so well done, and, it will [no doubt] draw comparisons to SPELLBOUND, which follows the National Spelling Bee and the young contestants who intensively study the English language by reading the dictionary, practicing with flash cards and devoting their lives to mastering spelling. WORDPLAY is different in that the first half of the film, I would say, is more focused on Will Shortz, his following of crossword puzzle fans and how the puzzles are created. We even learn about the formula that they must use, as a template to derive the correct number of letters across, as well as down. The puzzles are also reflective of current events, developments in pop culture, policy and politics. They really are a sign of the times. The second half of the film shifts its focus to the contestants pursuing the Crossword Puzzle Championship. It'll have you biting your nails, too. The director really captured the tension and suspense that intensifies as each contestant aspires to be the champion. This is definitely a great film worth watching. You'll walk away feeling that you learned something and also had a good time in the process!

4 out of 5 stars This Movie Won't Let You Down - Or Leave You Cross.......2007-06-12

First we had a movie about Scrabble competitions, now here comes a movie about the ultimate crossword competition - organized by Will Short, master crossword puzzle creator.

This film doesn't quite let us get to know its competitors in the same way the Scrabble documentary let us get to know its enthusiasts. But this film shows a lot more besides the mere competition. It shows who designs many of "The New York Times" crossword puzzles and how the designers attack the problem. You'll learn a lot about crossword puzzle-design you probably didn't know. For example - computer programs generally aren't used. Short and others still do all the work out of their own brains. And did you know every puzzle must be symmetrical?

Then we see several celebrities at work solving a daily puzzle. Bill Clinton might have been more popular as President if he had run the Country as judiciously as he solves a crossword puzzle. He philosophizes as he goes along, saying that a puzzle should be approached in the same way you approach a problem of State - you scan for what you know first - then you slowly work your way out from there.

Jon Stewart attacks a problem as if he were in a hockey game - slapping, cursing, jabbing at the page. At first I thought he was putting on a show of aggression for the camera - but no, that's really his all-out way of doing the daily crossword.

The documentary briefly discusses the origins of the crossword puzzle in the U.S. I would have liked to hear a lot more about the history of the puzzle and how the character of clues might have changed over the decades. And I was disappointed to find no discussion at all of the British tradition of crossword puzzles. How and why did the Brits develop their puzzles along such a different path? In the U.S., despite some punning around the theme of each puzzle, most of the clues call for straightforward synonyms. But in England, almost all the clues involve elaborate combinations of anagrams, puns, rebuses, homonyms, the works. What does this say, if anything, about the difference between British and American culture? And what about crosswords in other cultures, other languages? I wanted more! Maybe as DVD bonus material!

Still, this film provides an interesting look into crosswording a la "The New York Times." You can't be down or cross when you have a fresh puzzle facing you in the morning - or after you've finished watching this film.

5 out of 5 stars word nerds, unite!.......2007-06-09

"The excitement is palpable!" gushed NPR's Neal Conan. He was right; I would not let my wife interrupt while I watched. It was the championship round of the 28th Crossword Puzzle Tournament at the Marriott in Stamford, Connecticut. Wow! This whimsical documentary introduces you to the world of word nerds who are addicted to the NY Times crossword puzzle, people like Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, the Indigo Girls and pitcher Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees. But the best takes are those about ordinary people-- there are 50 million puzzleheads out there-- who compete every year in Stamford, and also the "crossword constructors" who create the puzzles with their dastardly clues (the Times uses about 110 puzzle constructors in a year). Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor for the NYT, looms large throughout the film; thirty years ago at Indiana University where you could create your own major he specialized in "enigmatology." If you want to compete at Stamford, sharpen your pencil; it takes only 3-4 minutes for the champion puzzlers to solve that bugger in your morning paper.

Inspirational and entertaining, PREFONTAINE is another acclaimed success from the makers of HOOP DREAMS. It's the true-life story of legendary track star Steve Prefontaine, the exciting and sometimes controversial "James Dean of Track," whose spirit captured the heart of the nation! Cocky, charismatic, and tough, "Pre" was a running rebel who defied rules, pushed limits ... and smashed records ... in an incredible against-all-odds quest for Olympic gold! Now a major motion picture, the triumphs and heartbreaks of this unforgettable champion will have you riveted from beginning to end!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good........2007-08-12

I liked this movie. I enjoy movies about real people. It's a sad story.

2 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Bad Execution.......2007-07-24

As a runner, I wanted to love this movie. Unfortunately, it has the lowest production values I've ever seen in a supposedly big-ticket movie. The "aged" character interviews are almost laughable and single-handedly made me hate it.

All is not lost, though. The similarly themed movie "Without Limits" that was released almost alongside "Pre" is head and shoulders above this one. Buy that one instead and you'll be more than happy.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks A Lot! Now I'm Haunted........2007-07-06

I'm not big into sports related movies but I am a fan of the actors in this movie. So I just had to see it and I was completely drawn into the story (or more accurately life) of Steve Prefontaine. Jared Leto and R. Lee Ermey were so convincing (as they always are) and the mood of the film made me feel as if I were there and had known "Pre".

It's a great movie, but I just want to say that the ending of the movie was so emotional for me that months after seeing it, I'm still haunted by the memory of "Pre". Thanks a lot, Jared Leto. Your acting is a bit too convincing!

5 out of 5 stars Prefontaine.......2007-06-27

Great movie for the track athlete and/or track fan. Interesting look at an athlete who has transcended death and time to become a model for aspiring runners. Even if you don't run, Pre's attitude toward his training and competition teaches a valuable lesson in giving whatever you do in life your best effort.

4 out of 5 stars Coaching Track & Cross Country.......2007-05-12

We rented PREFONTAINE and had a pizza/movie social night for our team this spring. Most of the kids had never heard of this athlete, and they really enjoyed the show! They want to see another running movie-- this time featuring less white people! :)

Until Major League Baseball is able to preserve footage of the 1908 World Series in a digital format, Chicago Cubs fans will have to content themselves with the Chicago Cubs Legends - Great Games Collector's Edition. It's an eight-disc set of complete games in the Cubs' history since 1984, each dedicated to a significant player. Hall of Fame second-sacker Ryne Sandberg gets the obvious game, his coming-out-party on Game of the Week when his two clutch homers vs. St. Louis Cards closer Bruce Sutter signaled something big was happening in 1984. From there you can skip to the first game of the NLCS when Rick Sutcliffe shut down the Padres and even pounded a homer to lead a 13-0 romp, Andre Dawson hitting three home runs in his MVP season of 1987, and Mark Grace's epic duel against the Giants' Will Clark in the 1989 NLCS. There's more: rookie Kerry Wood fans 20 Astros and allows no walks and only one infield hit in arguably the most dominating pitching performance of all time; Sammy Sosa crashes home runs nos. 61 and 62 in his race with Mark McGwire to set the single-season homer mark; returning-prodigal-son Greg Maddux wins his 300th career game in 2004; and first baseman Derrek Lee goes 5 for 5 in 2005.

But it wouldn't be the Cubs without some heartache, and there's plenty of it--even these memorable games (they're all wins too!) led to further misery. The 1984 heroics led to a defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory playoff loss. Dawson's three home runs still netted him only five RBI, and the club finished in last place despite having the MVP. The 1989 NLCS was tense and hard-fought, but the game included here was the only win in a 4-games-to-1 series loss. Due to injury, Wood became the poster boy for unfulfilled potential; Sosa ended up leaving a game, and the team, in infamy; and Maddux in 2004 was not the vintage Maddux of old, nor did his addition turn out to be the move that pushed the post-"Bartman" team over the top. Lee played a big hand in knocking out the Cubs that year, and his subsequent acquisition led to near-MVP numbers in Cubbie Blue in 2005, but based on tenure he's the most questionable "legend" as of 2007, when this set was released.

That said, these games are some of the most memorable, and enjoyable, in Cubs history. And although none of the complete games is earlier than 1984, classic fans should enjoy the bonus footage of older Cubs such as Ernie Banks and Billy Williams. Unlike other MLB collector's editions, though, no new interview footage is included. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Cubs fans, rejoice.......2007-08-07

If you're a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, you are required to own this DVD set. Sadly, it's sorely lacking on game footage of legends like Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams, and the bonus features come up a little short, but the complete broadcast games featuring the 1989 and '84 playoffs (the good games -- the wins) is great stuff. Plus, Steve Bartman is nowhere to be found in the entire set, although the 1998 one-game playoff win over the Giants would have been a nice addition.

4 out of 5 stars a strange mix.......2007-07-04

Overall, I reccomend this set. It's really a must for diehard Cub fans like myself. Some of the bonuses are pretty cool. However, I wish the powers that be would have made this set more about about the team's achievements than the player's. For at least 5 of the DVD's, the game in question happened to share both distinctions. And I would say we'd want 1984's 'Sandberg game' and 98's Wood 20-strikeout game even if those teams didn't make the postseason. However - while Derrek Lee's 2005 season was terrific, I would think most fans would agree with me that we have little interest in seeing a random game from a mediocre season (when he happened go get 5 hits) again. There are plenty more games that meant more in terms of the team achievements and their post-season aspirations (such as one in September of '89 - a division winnning season- they were down 9 runs to the Astros, and won it 10-9. Where's the DVD of that game? Or how about game 163 in '98-giving them the wild card? Both of those games mean a lot more than the Lee game - or the '87 Dawson game (which, despite what Dawson accomplished, was for a LAST PLACE team.)

I hope me and others can write the powers that be to follow this set up with something more about team accomplishment.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Chicago Cubs Legends.......2007-06-27

This is a wonderful set of DVD for all Cubs Fans. We have enjoyed watching this and will continue to enjoy it from time to time. Great to add to a collection of baseball.

5 out of 5 stars The Sandberg Game! & more.......2007-06-12

The Sandberg game was the best baseball game I ever saw. Tonight I saw it again for the first time in almost 23 years. I cannot think of a better sports DVD to buy, rent, or watch. The other games are just frosting on the cake....

4 out of 5 stars Some enjoyment for Die-Hard fans........2007-06-03

Well here's the good: Video quality is good, all things considered. Loved Game 1 of 84 NLCS. If you are you are a true Cub fan, you will enjoy this set.

Minor nitpicks: No pre-game video. It goes right to the first pitch. Very little post-game recap. No mention of who the announcers are. I was at the 84 game and didn't realize it was Don Drysdale and Earl Weaver and Tom Seaver. It's great they only showed the games the Cubs won, but I would have enjoyed even the epic games I attended (23-22 Phillies win in '79) And I would have LOVED more Haray Caray games. The only one was the 87 Dawson game. But still a great set. Always a pleasure to hear Steve Stone too, one of the most under-appreciated analysts.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS MOVIE.......2007-09-06

This is not a goofball subject. Air guitar is one of the unspoken truths associated with American culture since the early stages of rock. Most of the people you see at one point in time indulged themselves in the apparitional past time. This movie comes at a time when wielding the symbolic guitar is now approaching reality. I was struck early on by the feeling of magical metal tempo surrounding me as I contorted and muttered the groans of approval on my stage I could take wherever I went. My fingers on my hand danced seemingly close to the speed of light with the stage light eclipsed by the musings of others.

As a child, I took air guitar, we called it shredding, quite seriously, even more so after a horrible accident in a closet with my brother. Inspired by some fresh Winger riffs our star studded dream took us into a whirlwind of uncontrollable fits until it all stopped after colliding our heads into each other. I was unconscious for hours until I awoke and my parents explained that my brother had passed away. To this day, I shred air guitar to his honor as he was probably the best air guitarist their ever was. I honestly have no idea what happened in that closet dewd, but every time I watch this, you will be by my side.

5 out of 5 stars So Awesome!.......2007-08-31

I saw this at the SXSW film festival in 2006 mainly because it was the only thing showing at the time where were at. Oh man! Am I glad I saw it! No expectations at all...and it was one of the coolest things I've seen in a theater!! So freaking funny! The whole audience was going nuts pretty much the whole time. These real live "characters" are so hilarioius and so charismatic...they really make the fillm go. Such a crazy and goofy topic, but it was an awesome experience. If you appreciate good comedy and rock music, it's a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Full of Surprises.......2007-08-30

This movie was one of the best I saw in the last year - a great documentary of really funny, unusual people. I especially liked the overall tone of the movie in its generosity and lightheartedness. This is the kind of thing that makes me feel hopeful about our current world.

4 out of 5 stars The Standard For Sport Film.......2007-08-23

Excellent and beautiful film. It is a technical masterpiece and Reifensthal's camera work and eiting sets a standard that modern sport reporting has sadly forgotten in its quest to report without art.

This copy would have gotten a 5 star rating, however it is a rather shabby copy of a videotape and as soon as a new restored digital version is available forget this one and purchase the new one.

Still, the art value of this work makes it a must purchase. Reifensthal's connection with Hitler and his inner circle puts her accomplishments in film as questionable in the minds of some, however, art should be separated, in my humble opinion, from ideology. Her art is of the highest quality and to that end I highly suggest this DVD (with the reservation on quality that I've mentioned).

5 out of 5 stars the Riefenstahl dilemma.......2007-07-29

In the perception of Europeans, 'Olympia' sets a very bright side against a very dark side.

Let's start brightly: artistically this movie surely ranks among the very best of all times. Is part 1, 'Fest der Völker' (festival of nations) more of less a very good documentary, in part 2 'Fest der Schönheit' (festival of beauty) Riefenstahl fully displays her unparalleled skills. Emphasizing on the beauty of the human body, she captures action with a truly devastating quality.

The dark side of 'Olympia' is equally well known: it made great propaganda for Adolf Hitler. The whole structure of this movie breathes physical health, endurance and unconditional devotion to the Fatherland - a mental attitude greatly promoted by the Nazis. It served them very well in the years after 1936.

Concerning this DVD's picture quality, I guess it's still impossible to find sponsors for a serious restoration. Memories of the Hitler-horrors are still way too strong for that - and will probably be for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars Magnificent movie -- absolutely horrible transfer.......2007-07-24

I hadn't seen Olympia since the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when the first part was broadcast there. Since I don't buy VHS anymore I was glad to see it on DVD. I was disappointed by the awful transfer (from TAPE no less!), the lousy video compression, and the badly engineered audio compression that sounds like it was done at too low a bit rate due to the aliasing. HOWEVER, if you want this DVD for the movie that is contained on it then you will not be disappointed. Leni Riefenstahl's incredible skill in cinematography is on full display (as is her naked body at the beginning of the first part) and Herbert Windt's superb astounding musical score adds so much to it.

My recommendation? If you're a purist, wait for Criterion to bring out a DVD edition. Otherwise go rent it or buy a used copy.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-01-25

This disk is terrible. It is obviously cheaply digitized from a poor master tape. Don't purchase products by Pathfinder Home Entertainment, if this is an example of their business practice.

5 out of 5 stars Olympic-- and film gold!.......2007-01-04

Some years ago I saw that a theater that played "revivals" was showing Leni Riefenstahl's OLYMPIA. I had heard of the famed cinematographer-- whose life circumstances placed her talent in the middle of 1930's Germany. The film chronicles the famous Olympic games where Jesse Owens triumped on the world stage and Adolf Hitler dominated the political stage. The film is long-- many many hours. I decided to invest the six buck price of admission and just stay "for a while" to get an impression of Riefenstahls work-- I was mesmorized! I couldn't leave and stayed for the whole thing (4, 5, 6 hours-- whatever it is). When I saw OLYMPIA available on Amazon while looking for another film I grabbed it. And, again-- (through the wonders of technology) I sat completely fascinated, entertained, transported by hours and hours of this film and found myself repeating sections more than fast forwarding. It is truly a classic. Anyone who loves film, the Olympics, history-- should see this film and have it in their collection. It is stylized, artful, beautiful, humorous-- (the equestrian sequences of people falling off horses is a riot). But I guess the adjective that comes most to mind is beauty-- the images, angles, light are magical and exciting. At times the beauty of a still standing scupted object-- at times ballet, at times the raw excitement of athleticism and competition. Over the years my love of film has led to the project of founding and running Scandinavian Film Festival L.A. I know film makers, and curators, and heads of film institutes and have seen hundreds and hundreds of films-- I would recommend this film to any and all. It deserves the name classic--
