Critical Review, Vol. 2: Gabriel Years 1970-1975

Release Date: 2001-09-25 |
Description
When Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford joined forces in the late sixties, their intentions were not to be recording artists but rather songwriters. That initial plan soon fell by the wayside when they secured a record deal and became Genesis, progressing from the underground scene with such albums as "Trespass" and "Nursery Cryme," to become household names with the addition of drummer/singer Phil Collins and such chart topping albums as "We Can't Dance" and "Invisible Touch." By talking to the individual members of the group, discover what they consider to be their favorite Genesis songs, and why certain songs have a special place in the Genesis story. Song include: I Can't Dance, Invisible Touch, Follow You Follow Me, The Musical Box, Supper's Ready, I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Afterglow, Misunderstanding, Turn It On Again, Mama, Land of Confusion. 100 minutes.
Customer Reviews:
A GOOD OVERVIEW.......2007-04-04
This is a nice Genesis overview. It doesn't have other languages subtitles as the European version but is still a must for Genesis fans. It has quotations from all members (Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, John Silver, Daryl Stuermer, Bill Bruford and Chester Thompson). As a plus it contain acoustic versions (some complete some not) of known songs.
It was ok, the bonus material was more interesting........2006-09-25
The documentary itself I feel was a waste of time. I had heard all of this material before, and basically all of it you can find on the internet. The acoustic performances in the bonus material are the highlight for me, quite cool. It appeared to me that the editing for the documentary was quite sloppy, and there was even an audio click during the docu which quite frankly should have been caught. This audio click was present in both mixes so...........
perhaps misleadingly titled, and redundant with "A History", but any true fan should get a blast out of it anyway.......2006-05-04
Yes, if you have the earlier "A History" video (released in the early '90s), much of this "Songbook" is redundant, in terms of interview content as well as archive footage. But still, we get more up-to-date interviews, with Phil commenting on leaving the band, and Tony Banks' feelings on the band continuing after Phil's depature. I always take great pleasure in hearing commentary from the underrated genius Tony Banks, and his insights and keyboard demonstrations of how "Supper's Ready" and "Firth Of Fifth" evolved are intelligent and fascinating. Mike Rutherford, with acoustic guitar in hand, discusses the creation of "Turn It On Again", alternated with comments from Phil about it's 13/8 time signature--great stuff. It would have been nice to hear more from Steve Hackett; we do get to see him do a nylon-stringed guitar solo performance of "Horizons". This runs neck-and-neck with the "A History" video in terms of sheer entertainment value, and any true fan should get a blast out of it.
A a waste of time and money.......2006-01-06
This DVD is titled "songbook" when it should be called "talkbook" . Too much talk and not enough music . Only snippets or teasers that are rudely interupted with more talk . Save your money cause if you think you are getting music here , you are sadly mistaken .
makes me cry like a bear.......2005-07-31
It's raining like a bear outside and it reminds me of this sad video. This could have been so much better but it really is only a brushing of the surface of their long history. There are some nice moments- namely Rutherford's talking about riffs, Ray Wilson's feelings about the band and their manager's feelings- he really believed they should have continued with Wilson-I believe this as well and it is a shame. Pizza Patron seems lost as well as others-kind of like looking at the Petrified Forrest. Fading Lights indeed!! Would have been nice to hear more from Hentschel being that he produced quite a few of their great albums. Worth a look but come on!!!
