Jeff Goldblum stars in Pittsburgh, a fly-on-the-wall comedy in which the Jurassic Park and Independence Day actor plays himself taking a career hit by playing Harold Hill in a regional theatre production of The Music Man. Despite the pleas of his agent to take a plum part in a new Michael Bay sci-fi epic, Goldblum locks himself into a two-week stint in his hometown of Pittsburgh in order to help his fiancée, actress Catherine Wreford (also playing herself)--cast in the musical as Hill's love interest, Marian--get a green card. The very idea of Goldblum taking on the larger-than-life role of con man Hill is hilarious, and he gamely plays up his absolute unsuitability for the job. While Golblum's anxiety goes up and up over botched rehearsals, other people in his life--especially good friend Ed Begley Jr. and Illeana Douglas--draw him into their own problems (Begley with a failed solar-power machine and Douglas with her ill-fated romance with Moby). Co-directed by Chris Bradley and Kyle LaBrache (Illeanarama), Pittsburgh is a remarkably energetic movie in which Goldblum appears to be working harder than he ever has before on screen, dancing and singing and throwing himself into a series of demanding scenes that often last no more than a few seconds. This is well worth a visit for fans of Goldblum or anyone who enjoyed the likes of Waiting for Guffman. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Jumps the Shark.......2007-09-05

Finally, being famous for being famous has jumped the shark. Some amusing moments, but really now, didn't this stuff die with Anna-Nicole Smith? Why not just get a season compendiums of the Larry Sanders Show?

If you're a faithful fan of E! Network, give it a whirl. Otherwise, skip it. You won't miss anything.

4 out of 5 stars Film is an absolute riot.......2007-08-30

I initially watched this movie primarily because I live in Pittsburgh and like Jeff Goldblum. But - even if you aren't from Pittsburgh and only moderately like Jeff Goldblum, this film is worth a watch and I would highly recommend it.

The film reminded me of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" where the central character (in this case, Goldblum) is the vortex with a cast of eccentric characters swirling around him.

Probably most funny are the scenes with Illeana Douglas and new beau Moby and Goldblum, who's trying really, really hard to like Moby, despite some of the stuff Moby is saying - and watching. There's also scene set in a parade with Douglas and Moby that is also very funny.

Watching Goldblum's mother and stepfather, you'll see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Jeff's mom is a pip, 80 years young with a 57-year old husband (and - they've been married for 20 years!), who also has a not-so-secret crush on Illeana Douglas.

Also hysterical are Goldblum's exchanges with his agent/manager, whose voice mails to Goldblum become more and more frantic as Goldblum remains resolute in his decision to ditch Hollywood for the lead role of Harold Hill in the Music Man - giving up a multi-million dollar deal and the coveted first guest slot on Conan O'Brien.

Goldblum cast old friends, and you can see the affection and love he has for Douglas as well as Ed Begley Jr., who ropes Goldblum into becoming a reluctant spokesperson for what you guess is another one of Begley's get-rich-quick gadgets.

The quick glimpses you get of Pittsburgh are good - most exterior shots are on one of the famous sister bridges downtown and on streets downtown.

While the film is built around the premise of Goldblum doing Music Man as a way to be with his fiancee and prevent her from getting booted out of the US (she's Canadian and is here on a work visa), you see surprisingly little of her on screen. So while Goldblum talks and talks to his friends about how in love he is with Catherine, one sees only a short glimpse of that relationship.

Nevertheless, it is funny and smart and I would recommend it to anyone who likes smart, quirky comedies.

The DVD version of Moby's multiplatinum CD Play is an almost perfect audiovisual synthesis of personality and uncompromised creativity, and, best of all, Moby never takes any of it too seriously. It's a given that Moby fans will totally dig the music, but it's Moby's hilarious 20-minute home video ("Give an Idiot a Camcorder") that everyone will be buzzing about, since it's as giddy as a Monty Python highlight reel and almost as inventive, with Moby himself hosting on his 2000 European tour, appearing in multiple guises and voices (Scottish, German, French, and classic dude-speak), and playing a variety of wacky interviewers with himself as their subject. Who knew the guy was this funny?

The included music videos are equally clever in their expression of Moby's benevolent, irreverent worldview, and while the studio recordings from Play have spanned the globe, now we also have a cluster of impeccable television performances (from BBC's Later with Jools Holland) that capture the music's remarkable transformation from one-man show to full-band realization. All of these ingredients can be viewed separately in addition to being combined and transformed in the DVD's "mega-mix" section, offering 90 minutes of mixes and redubs by some of the world's finest mix-masters, accompanied by a hypnotic exhibition of visual art that lends new meaning to the term "eye candy," capable of turning any home into a mind-blowing rave scene. Through it all, the word "play" is explored in all its definitions, gloriously filtered through the psyche of Moby, who embraces his inner geek to become the life of any party. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Very cool DVD.......2006-08-26

Good collection of Moby's music, the videos really show his creative and funny side. Some of the videos are bizarre cartoons, like the one where Moby as the man in the moon visits a Louisiana swamp and dances with an alien girl.

2 out of 5 stars lacking greatly.......2005-09-03

First, let me state that I am a HUGE moby fan. I own almost every single song he's released. I understand why V2 Records would leave some things out, but what got left out was truly vital.

The videos - there are ten of them, though it should've been 12. It's missing the "South Side" video and the "Bodyrock" video with the sunglasses. The only two realy good videos of moby's from the "Play" era and they aren't even included. The part that bugs me is that it wasn't a licensing issue - clips from both videos appear in the visualisations for the megamix. Also, in the videos which are included aren't really that good. The animated videos have highly limited appeal. And the porcelain "eye version" is utterly pointless, you are looking into an eye the whole time showing a montage of very few images in the pupil. The porcelain "car version" is alright, as well as the popular Natural Blues video - each tell a story and are genuinely inventive, relying on directing instead of a few random images. Honey and Run On were made before play really hit it big, so you can tell that they're just low production value things made out of obligation instead of creativity. Find my baby is a little funny, and gives you a look into moby's psyche a little.

"Give an idiot a camcorder" lives fully up to it's name. Moby tries way too hard to be funny and miserably fails. The worst part is when he dwells over being a week late to a french cultural festival seemingly endlessly.

The Megamix is alright, though quite repetitive in some spots. The visualizations are better than nothing (like with the 18 dvd) but the song selection definitely could improve. Though they had some nice trance with Ferry Corsten, Katcha, and Perfecto it all sounded the same after a while. Some of the breakbeat artists like Dani Konig, Dave Clarke, and Sharam were pretty good for the genre, which is generally repetitive in and of itself. Overall the megamix isn't anything you'd listen to much but it's mildly entertaining the first time.

The live show is the most redeeming quality, along with the better produced videos. Although you don't really see anything authentic, since he's not playing every instrument in his bedroom, you'll find a much different feeling - with all the violinists, singers, another DJ, a bassist, and moby on the acoustic guitar - you get a little more intimate than just one bald vegan can get. Porcelain sounds much clearer acoustic, and you can hear moby's voice and tonalization much better, porcelain actually sounds entirely new - that is more loving and less haunting. Everloving is the only live song I have a real complaint with. With a setlist of only 6 songs, you'd hope one wouldn't need a metronome as soon as someone goes acoustic, however moby does. During the nice soft guitar that usually starts the song you hear a penetrative clicking which becomes harder and harder to ignore.

The entire DVD is pretty bad. Mostly filler for about 1 or 2 things really worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars It could've had more if you compare to The Chem. Bros. DVD.......2004-10-25

Overall, I really thought the videos could've been a little more creative and unique. Some of the videos were just kind of weird in my opinion, and the good ones I never really called good, I just thought they were ok. Some of the TV spots were good, like the one where Moby performs "Go" LIVE, that was impressive and was also the first time I have heard the song "Go" in general. The MEGAMIX I thought was poor, a lot of the mixes and remixes were very dull and could've been a lot better considering there were some remakes of some of Moby's songs that were just slaughtered.

5 out of 5 stars Electronica Genius.......2004-05-07

Moby has long been associated with electronica and dance music, and I've often wondered why. Although his classic CD "Moby" demonstraighs beautiful techno music making ability, his other CD's could very well be classified as "rock" in the category as say, Radiohead, Beck, or many other rock musicans who own a synth. I would always be surprised when people associated Moby with Shasa and Digweed, or Paul Van Dyk. Then i got Play the DVD.

Moby's CD play I've always liked and the DVD is a masterpeice. Included is a 90 minute remix of Play known as a "megamix". This explains why Moby can rightfully be classified with other techno greats. Having been a fan of dance music for many years, and having attended many raves, I can truly say without question, Moby's megamix is one of the best DJ mixes I've ever heard. Personal favorite tracks include his remix of Porcelain and Honey. Overall, the megamix feature is worth the cost of the whole DVD and truly great trance.
