Apoptygma Berzerk - The Harmonizer DVD
Distributed by Metropolis Records
Reviewed by Richard Van Camp

Of everything Metropolis Records has put out in 2005, I have to say The Harmonizer DVD by Apoptygma Berzerk is by far the most glorious and ambitious of all of their projects so far. If you are a fan of Apop, you'll be in absolute adoration of the band after you watch The Harmonizer DVD. If you've never heard of this band from Denmark, check this DVD out and be ready to become a disciple!

There is so much in this Double DVD collection that it really is an embarrassment of wealth. This is the DVD that just keeps on giving!

To start off with, there's footage of Apop during "The World Harmonizer Tour", recorded live at the Grosse Freiheit 36 in Hamburg, Germany.

Here's the line up of songs Apop performs:

1. More Seratonin...Please
2. Suffer in Silence
3. Spindizzy
4. Kathy's Song
5. Pikachu
6. Unicorn
7. Until the End of the World

I have to tell you: Stephan Groth and the band have never looked better or performed with so much passion. Guitarist, Angel Strengel, keyboardist and back up singer, Geir Bratland, and Drummer, Fredrik Brarud, take the band to a new level live.

Also included in the DVD is a documentary: "The Making of Harmonizer", in which you get to see the band hard at work on making the "Harmonizer" album and the three videos, also included in the DVD set for: "Suffer in Silence", "Unicorn", and "Until the End of the World."

I have watched this DVD so much that I noticed that one of the audience members is also at the VNV Nation concert captured on VNV's "PastPefect" DVD. Now that's a lot of watching, rewatching and studying everything about the concert!

Also included in the DVD set is a bonus CD: "Unicorn", in which the band perform seven different versions of "Unicorn" (the video version, Fairlight Children Rmx, T.O.Y. Rmx, Killin' Rmx by Freezepop, Hocico Rmx, Alon Cohen Rmx, Drugwar Rmx, No Comment Rmx) as well as the songs "Pikachu", the instrumental "114 BPM" and an incredible cover of The Cure's "A Strange Day" (Bravo, gentlemen!) as well as "Non Stop Violence" - Live in Tel Aviv.

What personalizes the DVD for any Apop fan and for anyone interested in the band is the all access documentary: "The making of Harmonizer." The band lets you see how hard they worked on the album and what inspired Stephen Groth to create Harmonizer, the album. What's fantastic about the DVD, I found, was the narrative on the addition of band mates Angel and Frederick Brarud and how this has helped create the best line up of Apop to date.

This is a superb DVD, one I highly recommend. Five stars and then some!

4 out of 5 stars EBM MADNESS!!!!!.......2004-07-30

What's up kids, EBM guy here. I finally got my hands on this release and I guess I should handle the big question first, is it a dissapointment? well, yes and no. It contains a great documentary about the making harmonizor and the world harmony tour and some cool video clips that Americans have no other way of seeing. The only downfall is the concert set itself. Its just too short. Why couldnt they have put an entire set on here instead of the 8 (really6) songs that they did. i know for a fact that they performed more songs in the show.
What they give is great however, it shows the new band members wonderfully. This show is totally different than the show they did in 2000 so it wouldnt be a repetition in anyway.

The big deal about this is the audio cd. Several remixes of Unicorn(all different, all good) and a brand new song and a cure cover. The new song is strange for Apop. If this is the new direction they are going in I am eager to here what the new album will sound like.

Anyway, if you love apop you should run out and get this but newbies would be better off with APBL:2000.

I, for one, loved this however.

ehhh, just buy it.

until next time,

EBM guy.
