Great to see/hear Van from years gone by.

5 out of 5 stars Some nice tracks.......2007-06-08

"Bulbs", "Street Choir", and "Troubadours" are worth the price by themselves. Actually, just "Bulbs" alone would be worth it -- what an amazing performance!

4 out of 5 stars With Van You Never Know.......2007-05-24

I'm a serious fan of Van Morrison. I own all of his released albums, and a few bootlegs. I've read a couple of the biographies, and I've seen him live 8-10 times. "Astral Weeks" is among my very favorite albums by any artist at any time. This is the first DVD of Van I've ever seen. I bought it with some trepidation.

This is an artist who walked on stage in London and said, as others have noted, "Let's get this over with," and then gave a wrteched performance, walking off stage after 45 minutes and never returning. This is an artist who, in a Chicago show, blew us out of our seats at the Chicago Opera House with a 2.5-hour set, four encores and a version of "Madam George" that gives me goosebumps 32 years later.

These performances are much better than the London show, but a far cry from what Van can do if he chooses. They are workmanlike performances of a mix of good and indifferent songs. Especially in the 1980 show, the band seems to be much more involved than Van. That's surprising, given the mix of artists involved. I'm also curious why these shows weren't released for 32 and 26 years, respectively. But I suppose we can chalk it up to Van's notoriously bad relationship with his labels and managers.

If you are a Van Morrison fan, these DVDs belong in your library. If you aren't a huge fan, you might buy them for the occasional glimpse of what Van can do. Van Morrison, for all his flaws, is a hugely influential, seminal artist. The DVDs are a glimpse - just a glimpse - why.

4 out of 5 stars Love the 1980 set.......2007-05-14

There are two concerts here: the one from 1974 is a bit more loose than the later one. If you've seen Van a few times over the years, you know that some nights there's no one like him; other nights he's more human than divine. You'll have both experiences here, but at the price and quality of the recording, it's worth picking up.

2 out of 5 stars Boring boring Van yet again .......2007-03-10

I have 9 of Vans CD's, so its not like I dont like the music.

However, on film, another deal. this is one of Vans famous BORING outputs by him, he is flat bored and on cruise control. He's like dont I have someplace else to be? I never could fig out this dude. when your on stage you "go off" every time, people are paying to watch! anyway, its the only recording of him from back then that I know of on DVD, and the band, is great, so I will give it 2 stars for the band. One star off for no closed Caption, like hearing impaired people that can hear music, but lip read allot for words, want to star at that mouth for over and hour? not. camera work is almost all Van, show the band for a sec, then back on Boring VAN!

The band flat out plays. This is one of those dvd's to let let play as your moving about the house cleaning or on the pc and take eye shots of it here and there. No concert dvd can just sit and watch all time, after a few plays thats it as far as sitting and watching. I did go against that one when the Led Zep dvd set came out in 2003, 30 times in 3 months? had to put it away for long time after that whew.

A Classic Prine Performance On DVD For The First Time!

For 35 years, John Prine has been writing, singing and recording amazing music. From his self-titled debut album in 1971 to his recent Grammy Award-winning Fair And Square, he is a true songwriting hero to his fans and peers. Included in his set list are the early classics "Angel From Montgomery" and "Hello In There," as well as songs from his signature album, Bruised Orange. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nicely balanced presentation.......2007-07-12

The legendary Country-Folk artist has a real showcase here: a respectfully produced live show and documentary. We even get a '51 Ford!
Concert songs include "Automobile", "Angel From Montgomery", "Hello In There", and two with the great Rockabilly Billy Lee Riley, who duets with JP on "No Name Girl" and his (shoulda-been million-seller at the time) "Red Hot". This Sun Records exponent does his '50s thing - too bad he didn't contribute some harmonica, especially on "No Name Girl", a Bo Diddley beat (it's been written that BLR contributed to a Bo l.p., way back when).
John takes us back home in Illinois, to the backyard where he listened to Country sounds as a kid. With his original 1950s radio set on the back steps, he reminisces about his family and how he got started in music. Probably his best vocals are done right there, "Paradise" and "How Lucky" - his voice was a bit tired on stage, but his *music* is no less compelling.

4 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!.......2007-04-12

I saw this soundstage show when it first aired in 1980 and loved it. His backup band with John Burns is fantastic. My only disappointment with this dvd is that the sound quality is good but not great, so it might not get played as much as I'd like. i recognize that it's 27 years old, but as a comparison, Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall is 36 years old and that sound quality is fantastic. Go figure. Still a thumbs up and all true Prine fans should have it in their library.

4 out of 5 stars Great performance - poor quality disc.......2007-04-04

This is vintage Prine and I was definitely excited when I saw the announcement of the DVD release. However the video quality of the copy I bought is extremely poor with excessive dropout and lots of video noise. I've had a copy of this program which was recorded off the air on VHS 25 years ago and the quality is as good as this official DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of great late70s/early80s American musicianship.......2007-03-27

A great sounding show and excellent performance from all involved, heart-wrenching at times and belly-laugh inducing at others.

The DVD authoring isn't fancy but it all works.

LIVE 1980 (AMARAY DUAL DISC) (DEVO)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very worthy purchase.......2007-04-02

(4.5/5 stars) This features Devo performing blistering, nearly perfect renditions of some of their most popular songs, including "Smart Partol/Mr.DNA," "Mongoloid," "Gut Feeling/Slap Yer Mammy," "Jocko Homo," "Come Back Jonee" and "Whip It." Highlights for me are the performance of "Pink Pussycat" and, since I am from Ohio, the inclusion of the "What's round on the ends and HI in the middle" riddle as part of "Jocko Homo." The sound quality is pretty good, considering it was recorded live in 1980. There are even a couple different audio options. Furthermore, the showmanship is most entertaining, with the guys sporting a variety of outfits, including their trademark Energy Domes. Attribute it to what you will, but the group is also very energetic throughout the performance. This is more than can be said for the Petaluma, CA audience, which does not appear to have been very large. Until the final couple songs, people in the front were more or less standing still in spite of the fact these guys were providing such an excellent show. My one complaint is that there is virtually no verbal interaction with the audience. Perhaps this was edited from the original footage for whatever reason, but Devo simply performs their songs and then leaves. I expected some witty dialogue, a monologue, anything that would allow us to get to know their personalities a little better. Nonetheless, this is a great value, with a video of a complete Devo concert from 1980 on one side and the soundtrack from the concert on the other, all for about $13.00. Heck, there are even clips of the guys performing as Dove, an alter ego of Devo. Buy this today.

4 out of 5 stars DEVO live is a religious experience.......2007-01-18

wow. great song selection, endless energy, enough variation to keep it interesting, and a really weird, awesome ending featuring booji boy and 'tunnel of life'. the breakdown in the middle of 'jocko homo' is especially cool(what's round on the sides and hi in the middle? O-HI-O!). it's just amazing how good DEVO was live. the dvd loses a star because they don't show the drummer enough and the audio side of the disc inexplicably butchers the concert and leaves out the great version of 'jocko homo'.

5 out of 5 stars Softcore Mutations!.......2006-12-25

Devo...nothing else compares. They are much more than just a band. You won't be disappointed with the disk. Great tracks, well shot, and definately a must have for the spud in your life.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all spuds.......2006-11-09

Where has this golden footage been hiding these past 25 years. There is something special about re-viewing this rare live concert in its raw form.Ok, so the picture quality and audio may not be exactly dolby digital but in my view this only adds to the sensation of seeing the pioneers of punk/electro/rock in their heyday
Absolutely essential viewing for fans

4 out of 5 stars A madness to your movements really gets my goat.......2006-03-17

I got no beef with the audio. My beef ain't with the picture quality per se. My beef's with the editing.

The August 17, 1980 performance of "Gut Feeling/Slap Yer Mammy" included on this "LIVE 1980" DVD can also be found on the "DEVO: RISING SUN" DVD as a bonus feature. The "RISING SUN" version shows only what a single hand-held camera photographed from the foot of the stage, but slaps yer mammy twice as hard as the "LIVE 1980" version. Why? Because the "LIVE 1980" edit interpolates this tune, and every other, with blurry long shots of the entire stage, shot by a locked-off camera in the balcony. If you've ever fantasized about watching a concert entirely by security cam, this DVD brings you one step closer to your dream.

As presented on "RISING SUN", however, "Gut Feeling/Slap Yer Mammy" consists of one long, unbroken piece of film. The shot is by no means static; the cameraman creates one composition after another with attentive pans and zooms. The unbroken shot brings the viewer up-close-and-personal with the archetypal New Wave nutjob: Mark Mothersbaugh, his ramen noodle coif tossing sweat across the lens, banishes all doubt that he's had just about all he can take, and can't take it no more.

Even when, technically, he's marking time until the next lyric comes along, he stays in ferocious character. The unblinking camera captures each twitch. It's at these brief, dramaturgical moments that the "1980" editors get bored and throw in those lousy-looking long shots.

The people who put this DVD together had the raw material to create something extraordinary, something exciting and organic, but because you can't make the obligatory, coked-up edit from one camera's images alone, all available filler, Grade-Z or lower, is loaded into the grinder.

3 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for sure, but audio and video lacking quality........2007-08-28

Agree with the other reviews on this dvd, just be prepared for some really poor quality video and not much better sound. I suppose it's all about how the original was taped, and considering the vintage perhaps to be expected. I was just a bit diappointed with both audio and video, but the band definitely showed up and rocked!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, Some OMD Exposure.......2007-07-09

Much thanks to those that taped, stored and unearthed this treasure, the only OMD video I'm aware of. The band rocks, the sound is good and although the camera is sometimes on the wrong player, there's no nauseating quick cutting, panning and worthless behind the drummer views that make so many concert videos unwatchable for me.

Enjoyed seeing so many members together, including all the primary writer-singers, plus sometimes drummer Steve Canaday plays guitar and sings an original of his. How many bands can claim four high quality singer-writers?

Terry Wilson is the primary lead guitarist at this concert and his rocking slide work especially spices up Larry Lee's Oh Darlin and Jackie Blue. Lee is on piano for those but is otherwise on drums, hidden behind a cymbal.

Certainly not much to complain about this video. More Lee songs would have been nice and another original John Dillon tune instead of his version of Porter Wagoner's Satisfied Mind. Here's hoping for a DVD of their 2006 and 2007 Wildwood concert reunions.

5 out of 5 stars What You Need To Know.......2007-06-13

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were among the most popular mid-'70s country-rock bands. These recently discovered video tapes of their memorable reunion concert, filmed New Year's Eve, 1980 at the Uptown Theater, Kansas City, Mo., feature their original lineup, along with later supporting members.

* This was the first time in five years that the original lineup all played together.

* First time available anywhere!

* The DVD features their signature songs "Jackie Blue" and "If You Wanna Get To Heaven."

* This live reunion concert is the first official DVD by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

It's entertaining, nostalgic, even poignant... not much more one could ask for from a Beach Boys concert. This 70-minute concert was the last time the complete group (brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston, plus backing musicians) would appear in the U.K., performing a mix of oldies ("California Girls," "Help Me Rhonda," "Fun, Fun, Fun," etc.) and some newer material. And if the show itself is somewhat pedestrian, it's still marvelous to see the three Wilsons together onstage, especially in view of the subsequent deaths of Dennis (in '83) and Carl (in '98), and Brian's eventual triumphant recovery from mental and emotional problems. To hear Carl sing so beautifully on "God Only Knows," or Dennis play drums with such power and emotion, or Brian, vacant but game, contribute a few lines to "Surfer Girl"... well, it might just bring a tear to your eye. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEACH BOYS' GREATEST MOMENTS DURING ONE OF ROCK'S FINEST HOURS!.......2007-08-03

I am writing a review on the legendary historic concert entitled "THE BEACH BOYS, GOOD TIMIN', LIVE AT KNEBWORTH, ENGLAND 1980" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you America's band and the pride of Hawthorne, California, T-H-E B-E-A-C-H B-O-Y-S! "THE BEACH BOYS, GOOD TIMIN', LIVE AT KNEBWORTH, ENGLAND 1980" was originally released in 2002 on the Eagle Records label on Compact Disc and DVD in association with Brother Records, Inc.

THE BEACH BOYS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest sacred anthems ever. THE BEACH BOYS will also forever be remembered as being the greatest harmonizing band of all-time. THE BEACH BOYS co-founder, mastermind, genius and producer Mr. Brian Wilson would be the backbone and force behind the band and would compose the majority of the band's all-time greatest anthems ever. However, the band would have their fair share of fatalities, tribulations and setbacks throughout the band's long and glorious career. Despite the setbacks, THE BEACH BOYS persevered, and would continue to release many albums and perform live before many sell-out crowds throughout the 1970's up to the 1980 period. Which now brings me to the legendary historic concert I'm about to review for all of you today. "THE BEACH BOYS, GOOD TIMIN', LIVE AT KNEBWORTH, ENGLAND 1980" chronicles and highlights one of the bands greatest moments during one of Rock's finest hours. This legendary concert was recorded on 21 June 1980, on the same bill as ELTON JOHN. This legendary historic landmark concert also documents and represents the last time that all BEACH BOYS' six original members comprising of Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Alan Jardine and Bruce Johnston would appear together singing and playing on a U.K. stage. In my opinion, this legendary historic concert is without a doubt, a true testament of the creative brilliance and musical creativity of six extremely talented musicians that harmonized like six heavenly angels. This landmark concert is also a fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. "THE BEACH BOYS, GOOD TIMIN', LIVE AT KNEBWORTH, ENGLAND 1980" is the continuing adventures in the life and times of THE BEACH BOYS legend and saga. Their music is their story that speaks for itself. And now, without further delay, it gives me great pleasure in taking all of you on a journey back in time to the Knebworth Rock Festival 21 June 1980 in Knebworth, England where THE BEACH BOYS are about ready to take the stage.

"THE BEACH BOYS, GOOD TIMIN', LIVE AT KNEBWORTH, ENGLAND 1980" from 2002 begins with the "Intro," which erupts into the forever BEACH BOYS stamped trademark hit anthem "California Girls," the legendary Rock anthem "Sloop John B.," a great live version of the legendary hit anthem "Darlin'," the fantastic rendition of the CHUCK BERRY classic Rock anthem "School Days," one of the band's all-time greatest live versions ever of the Rock anthem, "God Only Knows," an incredible live version of "Be True To Your School," the a*s kicking Rock anthem "Do It Again," the breathtaking live version of "Little Deuce Coupe," the electrifying live versions of "Cotton Fields/Heroes And Villains," the emotional moment for Brian singing "Happy Birthday Brian," the amazing then new hit single "Keepin' The Summer Alive," the beautifully arranged and well sung song by Al entitled "Lady Lynda," the forever BEACH BOYS stamped trademark Rock anthem "Surfer Girl," the mindblowing Rock anthem "Help Me Rhonda," the band's magnificent rendition of the CHUCK BERRY immortalized Rock anthem "Rock & Roll Music," another BEACH BOYS stamped trademark Rock anthem entitled "I Get Around," the perfect rendition of the CHUCK BERRY/BRIAN WILSON composition of the immortalized Rock anthem "Surfin' USA," one of the most beautifully slow and romantic love songs ever recorded that BILLY PRESTON and DENNIS WILSON co-wrote together but never gave Denny the songwriting credit that was due and deserved, "You Are So Beautiful," the blistering BEACH BOYS trademark Rock anthem "Good Vibrations," another merciless Rock anthem "Barbara Ann" and the a*s kickin' Rock anthem "Fun Fun Fun." I would like to say that this has to be one of the greatest concerts that THE BEACH BOYS ever gave in their whole career. All six bandmembers were sizzlin' red hot and on fire on that magical night. Well done guys.

This is one great legendary historic concert that I would highly recommend to everyone of all ages to own on both CD and DVD as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This priceless treasure gem has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. You can purchase both the CD and DVD either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. This is one great BEACH BOYS concert that no BEACH BOYS or music fan would want to be without.

In closing, Despite the fatalities and bad tribulations that THE BEACH BOYS have endured through the years, the band persevered and would carry on until the real fatal blow would strike and effect the band forever. When Dennis Wilson died on that sad day in December 1983 in Marina Del Rey, California, the true spirit and the lifeforce of THE BEACH BOYS would die with him forever. If that wasn't bad enough, Carl Wilson would succumb and die from Cancer in February 1998. Despite the loss of Dennis and Carl Wilson, and the many band personnel changes through the years, THE BEACH BOYS would again persevere and carry on releasing more albums and performing live before sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. Brian Wilson has enjoyed an extremely successful solo career and is on the road to a complete recovery. Brian would also finish and release the most famous unreleased album in Rock n' Roll history, the very same album that has been haunting and tormenting him for many years until he finally came to terms with it and found his inner peace within himself, the SMiLE album. Knowing this, I guess it is safe to say that THE BEACH BOYS are here to stay and are not going anywhere anytime soon. THE BEACH BOYS have already receive the highest honor possible, by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. With this in mind, THE BEACH BOYS have forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their many contributions, accomplishments and achievements as a Rock band as well as solo artists, will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be new tales and stories in the life and times of THE BEACH BOYS' legend and saga that will still need to be told and written in many new pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you Brian, Mike, the late great Denny, the late great Carl, Al and Bruce. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering! Keep The Faith! And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEACH BOYS FOREVER! R.I.P. DENNIS CARL WILSON, Born 4 December 1944, Died 28 December 1983 at age 39. Also R.I.P. CARL WILSON, Born 21 December 1946, Died 6 February 1998 at age 51. Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Beach Boys Concert Available.......2007-07-29

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer the present-day Mike Love and Bruce Johnston combo to the 1970s Beach Boys. True, they have no new music and true, only one original member is intact, but to be honest, I think "Pet Sounds" was the last good Beach Boys album.

That's why I love this DVD. They tend to stick to their early classics during this concert, such as "California Girls," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Surfin' USA," etc. They don't rely heavily on their 1970s material. I think by this time, the golden oldies tour formula was beginning to take effect, and in my view, that only makes this a better concert. Most Beach Boys fans say that the 1972 "In Concert" CD is the definitive concert from the band, but very few of their early hits were presented on that one. That's why I prefer this one.

If you want a more mature Beach Boys concert, look elsewhere. However, if you're okay with a heavy dose of oldies, this is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD.......2007-04-11

I was kind of disappointed with this DVD; it has some good songs, but just a few. Most of them are not good.

4 out of 5 stars With a Little Help From The Studio.......2006-11-14

First off, nobody loves the Beach Boys more than I do. I grew up with thier music. As a musician, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Brian Wilson for what he taught me about harmony. I've seen dozens of their shows, some awful, some incredible. And in 1983, a famous band I was in was their opening act for 3 weeks, so I got to hang with them and hear them every night. Live performances are generally never quite up to par with studio performances, and as a performing musician, producer, and engineer, I understand that. It's nearly impossible to achieve on stage amongst the roar of amplifiers and monitors what can be done in the studio where there is a totally controlled environment - and the ability to repair any mistakes. "Good Timin'" is indeed a live performance, but it has been enhanced or 'sweetened' back in the recording studio before being released. The backround harmonies have been supplemented by overdubs, if not all replaced completely. A trained ear will hear the double-tracking of parts - commonplace in any studio recording. It just makes everything sound "fatter". This is nothing new. The Eagles have done this on all their live recordings, as have Fleetwood Mac and plenty of other vocal groups. Some groups, like the Bee Gees, will even run pre-recorded tracks at their live shows to recreate the lush wall of voices that characterize their studio recordings. Personally, I like hearing the rough edges and rawness of a true live recording. The Beach Boys made the best harmony records of anybody, so we know they can sing. I don't mind hearing a missed part or flat note here & there. I wish they'd just mixed "Good Timin'" the way it was. The real beauty here is seeing The Boys all playing together for the very last time.

4 out of 5 stars Dennis Wilson is the reason to watch this...........2006-03-30

This dvd works on two levels- If you are a casual Beach Boys fan who wants to see some aging sellouts (Mike, Carl, Bruce and Al) jigging about to the hits of their youth, buy away- that is here. On the other hand Brian is here- in body and with a couple of brief vocal cameos, and some inaudible piano. And then, there's Dennis...he ties a sweaty towel round Mikes leg, sings a BEAUTIFUL, ragged version of you are so beautiful, makes help me rhonda rock with excellent piano and backing vocals, and generally has a total blast throughout...the only spontaneous thing about the whole affair. Brian was absent from the live Beach Boys from 64 onwards, even when he was onstage...Dennis was the only reason to see them live...it's a shame he doesn't streak here!

Marvin Gaye might not have been the obvious invitee to the 1980 Jazz Festival in Montreux, but this DVD of his appearance there is as good a document as any currently available of the soul sage at the height of his talents. Gaye is joined on stage by a full band replete with backup singers and horn section, all resplendent in their late-'70s fashion statements. While the continual onslaught of overhead lighting is reminiscent of a concert in a high school gym, Gaye isn't letting anything get in his way as he lays down groove after groove of his most beloved material. He fights to keep "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" fresh even if it's his zillionth time plaintively administering that age-old news. The whole concert brims with an energy that only climbs higher in the finale as Gaye electrifies with "Mercy Mercy Me" and takes his sweet time with his classic "What's Going On," in which he even includes a soul-searching monologue that answers with some finality that nagging question: what's it all about? Live at Montreux is a must for fans and connoisseurs of soul alike. --Karl Wachter

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite DVD's.......2007-05-18

All I have to say is if your a Marvin Gaye fan, then you must have this live concert. I loved it!!!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-07-26

Good performance by Marvin and the band, but the sound is soooooo weak. Marvin never gets the audio prominence he deserves in this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Despite the audio (which is understandable).......2006-07-21

Just to come to this page and see the conga player on this review I am just in AWE! Girl you REALLY played them and it must have been a major treat to tour with the great Marvin Gaye!

A friend gave this to me as she KNOWS how much of a major fan I am of this genius (especially after mentioning to her that I was dying to see the live show)! Yes the audio is not the best, but just to see his presence is ALWAYS a treat for me! I had the CD to this concert before the DVD and it makes a WORLD of a difference to see him on stage!

The band was TIGHT! And the singers even TIGHTER! I wish I was one of the two women who got to dance with Marvin! This is as close to seeing Marvin live I will ever get as I was a little girl when he passed, but by then I was already familiar with him because one of my first record purchases was 1982's SEXUAL HEALING, which sparked my interest in DJing and Marvin Gaye!

One of my highlights for me includes a monologue of him receiving a "phone call" about his woman cheating during his performance of GRAPEVINE! It also shows his talent on the keyboards!

From the opening to the closing it is worth seeing and adding this to your collection! An absolute MUST for Marvin fans!

3 out of 5 stars Great Performance - Bad Sound Mix.......2006-07-12

Marvin Gaye and the Band give a great performance of a good mix of soul and funk.

I hope the sound the audiance heard was better than the sound on this DVD. At first I had to check the setup on my system and I tried the DVD on another DVD player. In the first track Marvin was barely audible and was drowned out by the band. Even the back-up singers were louder. The balance improved a little but Marvin's singing never gets the prominence it should.

Three stars is the average of five for performance and one for sound.

5 out of 5 stars I was there!.......2006-01-22

Aloha from Maui, well I really was there! I'm the conga player with the little round afro. It was an amazing journey traveling with this 21 piece orchestra, half of whom have passed away either from being murdered, drug overdose, and who knows, I might have a book in me about that! The band never did receive any royalties from this, what's that about? Maui is now my home, I've worked in Willie Nelson's island backup band, The Planetary Bandits. I also DJ on www.manaoradio.com, tune in for a little slice of Maui. Aloha, Sandra Akaka

4 out of 5 stars Todd and the Utopia Boys rule.......2007-08-08

I was at this concert, and was surprised by the presence of cameras at the show unware there was any intent to any kind of video presentation. Shown live on a local experimental cable service in Columbus, as well as in front of a sell out crowd, this was a historic moment for what is now very common in terms of interactive televison. I was so glad to find this on DVD and scooped it right off the shelf. It portrays the concert as I best remember it, and it is a thrill to relive that night in Columbus. The show was still my favorite of many Utopia concerts I saw. A nice visual display with a good mix of Utopia and Rundgren songs including many favorites. Some of the later shows focused almost solely on Utopia material. Todd is one of the most talented and yet underrated musicians in the business, and a class producer too. Some of the other video product available is very good, but I would recomend this as a first choice if you are looking to build a Todd and/or Utopia collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very close to being there.......2006-02-21

June 5, 1980 was indeed a magical night at Vet's Memorial Auditorium in Columbus. I too was one of the lucky ones to be in attendance. It was my first Todd Rundgren concert. I had heard the songs like Hello It's Me and Can We Still Be Friends, but it was Q-FM-96's playing of the Last of the New Wave Riders that got my attention. We had front row balcony seats, stage right. All I can say is wow, and then after all these years, I get to relive it again.

Yes, there were some equipment problems during the show, but Todd and Utopia were always leading the way with new high-tech equipment, and being a pioneer means you have bugs. In addition, anyone that's a fellow live luthier knows how easy it is for equipment that normally works flawlessly to obtain gremlins and guitars to go out of tune. It was clear that Todd and the guitar tech's struggled for the first few songs. And while Todd's wireless mic failed at a real bad time, they recover, and go on to rock for three strong sets.

Needless to say, this concert had a huge impact on me, I own all their albums and even had my own band for 6 ½ years. In addition, I've seen them many, many times since, both as Utopia, Todd solo, another foursome here and there, and... well you get the picture.

If you're a Todd fan at all, the greatest part of watching this video for me was how happy they were, they didn't look road weary at all, and all the songs were played with great feeling and a super beat or tempo. Not all concerts I attended in later years looked or sounded anywhere close. And while the audio is not digitally perfect, a good surround sound set up made it rock for me. They were on their game that night and it showed.

The only thing I am curious about, and it's only been twenty-five years (almost twenty-six), but I thought I recalled an awesome drum solo by Willie, and the drum kit spun around and the lights lit up... Also, the video for You Make Me Crazy didn't seemed a little edited or different, as I seem to recall when he sings about 100 cigarettes, you see a quick-time pile of what looks like hundreds appear on the table or in the ash tray. Same with some of the lighting for Todd and the boys as they sang back up on Love Alone (I recall them having a blast when the back up harmonies came in and out on this one). If you were there, maybe you can clear these up for me.

The smile on the very horse Todd at end says it all, as they really gave it their all that night, and this DVD is worth the money. We waited out back after the concert for them to come out and the few of us that were there were able to applaud, get grateful waves of appreciation, and even shake a hand or two. I still have the bumper sticker and the Q-FM-96 patch from that night stuck to my vinyl LP. This DVD brings back the magic very well, but it will never copy the electricity that was in the air that night along the banks of the Olentangy.

1 out of 5 stars Pass over this one........2004-09-20

I have seen Todd solo and with Utopia so many times, I cannot count it. Enjoyed each show, thought this would be a nice addition to the collection. I was wrong. It is the worst release of any artist I have ever seen. An actual piece of crap. Todd's pseudo-intellectual attitude seems to have gotten the best of him, thinking his fans would buy anything he puts out. He was right. I bought it, watched it, took it back and demanded my money. He should be embarrassed by this one. A real stinker.

5 out of 5 stars Flashes of the old Todd.......2004-04-09

I think if you watch "The Last Ride", it about sums the whole DVD up. There's Todd, up front, singing the first 2 note/syllable, and a roar goes up from the audience as they recognise it. And then its the Todd Show from then almost to the end of the song.

It's Todd's dilemma, you see. He's torn between his innate desire to please his fans (you know who you are!), to give them what they want - ie him - and his genuine hope for the success of the band Utopia. So even his career at that time is also encapsulated in this song. It starts explosively, a well-known classic that we all know by heart, even down to the qiver in Todd's voice. But then the rest of Utopia join in and screw up the song, and Todd (almost shamefully) picks up his guitar and slides back into the band for the big guitar solo at the end (we get to keep at least this much).

On the other hand, if you actually like Utopia, then like the Curate's Egg, it's good in parts. Luckily very large parts - of very Utopian keyboard solos, skreechy Todd guitar riding over the top - but the soundtrack is slightly muddy, and the band (distinctly, IMHO) go out of tune through some of the songs...and don't seem to notice! Also Roger Powell sings like the only song videos he's ever watched are AOR Power-ballads, C&W...and Bee Gees. Kasim's much better behaved, quite fetching (I've been told by a female acquaintance) in those white pants. But for me the crowning disappointment is the way Todd's hand-held mike cuts out just into "Love Is The Answer", missing out the first lines of the song. My favourite Todd song.

But it's a good video none the less. A great chance to see a live performance by an artist/artists that you may only have heard before.

3 out of 5 stars Advanced for it's time, but shows its age.......2004-02-19

I was there at this performance at Vets Memorial Auditorium, which was sold out at 3,964. One previous poster has a good question - where was Bolero? I recall that as a highlight, and opened Act 2. Didn't the band filter on stage one at a time, played a piece, followed by the next guy? Maybe it didn't translate well to video, too dark or something...each guy lit with one spot...

The video exists primarily as it was simulcast live on local Columbus cable TV called "QUBE", which was waaay advanced for its time. When watching, one must remember, this is 24 years old now and looks a bit dated, but was pretty cutting edge for its day.

The sound and video quality is sub-par when compared to today's standards. The performance is spirited with an adoring crowd. There were on-stage technical problems, but there was a lot on everyone's plate that night. Video cameramen with any experience onstage with the band was pretty rare in those days.

I remember leaving the show elated, thinking it was one of the best I'd ever seen, and spent lots of time trying to explain the theatrical elements to friends who weren't there. Now, 24 years later, there's a DVD!! I bought it strictly for nostalgia/momento purposes (actually more like a souviner, since I was actually there).

2 out of 5 stars War Live.......2007-08-26

First live DVD I have seen of War. I was excited when I picked it up but skeptical at the same time. Picture quality is low, soft image but pro shot. Audio is mono with no treble. This DVD looks like it was recorded from a boot tape to DVD. Save your money unless you are that deep into War.

3 out of 5 stars Wish it had better sound quality.......2007-05-27

This dvd has me scratching my head wondering why nobody spent the extra money to make what is a good dvd into a great one... especially since there are no other current War dvd's available... Why Jerry Goldstein why.. So what's the problem?...the audio on this dvd is comparable to a good quality concert bootleg tape... It is not even in stereo let alone have Dolby noise reduction... It sounds very muddy at times other times better...all instruments tend to bleed together or say when the sax is playing fade to the background,in other words a loud instrument drowns out the rest, the guitar is rarely heard... The video is ok not great... we could live with it if the audio made up for it. Another odd thing is apparently whoever put this together did not know War very well.. Song number 2 is called All My Sorrows but is really Slippin' Into Darkness(all my sorrows is a line out of it) and Gypsy Man is spelled Gipsy Man...speaking of Gypsy Man it features great Lee Oskar harmonica playing that was amazing to me...The band plays loose and good here and on the whole concert.. Bottom line if you love War like me you will want and should buy this as the guys greatness still shines thru here... just run your audio output into your TV for this one not your stereo and you'll be alot happier..

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD! This is nothing more than a bootleg video of very poor quality. I know because I have seen this footage, which by the way can be downloaded from various bootleg websites. Pink Floyd has never released any filmed performances of The Wall and until they do, there is no decent bootleg footage (like this is) available.

I only gave this 1 star because Amazon requires at least 1 star.

1 out of 5 stars This is NOT a legitimate Pink Floyd release : buyer beware!.......2006-12-07

Do not be fooled. This is NOT a legit Columbia/Sony Pink Floyd release. It is nothing more than a pirated copy of "The Wall" studio album coupled with a poor quality copy of an Earls Court video bootleg from The Wall tour. BUYER BEWARE!!!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2006-12-02

Click onto Tim Kass' online reviews. He has reviewed other Pink Floyd DVD's and worded them exactly the same and rated them five stars!!! Obviously, he is marketing these homemade, ultra low-quality, pirated DVD's.

Timmyboy is taking advantage of us PF fans who would love to see good quality vintage footage.

Shame, shame, shame!!!!

hey guys
i am a dy hard pink floyd fan and this dvd is the worst do not spend your hard earned money on this after watching 20 minutes of this dvd you can get a bad headache again i think they have copyed this from a video and the picture and sound is very poor
i warned you guys.

1 out of 5 stars worthless.......2006-04-02

This was the most expensive, and even more dissapointing purchase I've made yet. I dont know where the one good rateing came from, but you can't get surround sound without a menu to set it up. The quality was horrible, as was the sound. and it would have been nice to know that the cd's were the studio cuts.
I have a friend that has a copy that has an awsome menu, with several extras, I guess he will have to make me a copy so I can replace this useless one. The package is nice, but that's the best I can say. I gave it 1 star becouse it was the lowest one avalible.
