Descent movie.......2007-07-19
I don't know if this is Russ Par's first film, however I am impressed. I found this to be a pretty descent movie with a great cast. This movie takes you through, what I suspect, the many roads that comedians and aspiring actors/actresses can end up taking and experience filled with the good and mostly the bad. Just like the movie says, it is about the drama behind comedy. What I liked best was how the movie showed the characters' pasts and what brought them to doing comedy. I also liked the dose of harsh reality given to show that the path to success in Hollywood is not easy and it can be a tough grind that not everyone will endure to the end. I would recommend this film.
Description
The year was 1954, and four Detroit high school students met at a friend's birthday party. They started to sing... and popular music has never been the same since. Now, 50 years later, The Four Tops are still doing it better than anyone else - live on stage at the famed Detroit Opera House, along with some very special guests in an amazing song-filled tribute. These legends of soul music are joined by hosts Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, Aretha Franklin, Paul Rodgers, Mary Wilson and many others for hit after unbelievable hit. The show reaches its electrifying and emotional climax with the return to the stage of the legendary Levi Stubbs. For any fan of music, this is a performance to remember!SONGS: Main Street (Four Tops) / Baby I Need Your Lovin' (Four Tops) / Something About You (Ashford & Simpson) / My Girl (Four Tops) / Are You Man Enough (Four Tops) / Indestructible (Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Review and Four Tops) / I'll Turn To Stone (Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Review) / Ask The Lonely (Four Tops) / River Deep Mountain High (Mary Wilson and Four Tops) / Ain't No Woman (Four Tops) / Always and Forever (Four Tops) / I Can't Help Myself {Sugar Pie} (Four Tops) / The Four Of Us (Four Tops) / Love Music (Paul Rodgers) / Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever (Paul Rodgers and Four Tops) / I Want To Make It Up To You (Aretha Franklin with Theo Peoples) / I Believe In You and Me (Aretha Franklin, Four Tops, and a special appearance by Levi Stubbs) / Medley: Bernadette, Same Old Song, Just Walk Away Renee, Reach Out I'll Be There, Standing In The Shadows of Love ((Four Tops) / Baby I Need Your Lovin' (Four Tops and Guests)

Four Tops/50th Anniversary Concert.......2007-07-22
Excellent DVD! I watch it quite often. The Four Tops could not have picked a better singer to replace Levi Stubbs. Theo Peoples is a phenomenal singer! I cry each time I watch it and they bring Levi out on the stage. I also cry to see the love between Duke, Obie and Levi, as they wipe his tears away. This is a must have for Four Tops fans.
The Four Tops.......2007-01-11
This is a great DVD. I have watched it 50 times or more. I love it. It has made me start going to concerts, again. I love the new leader of The Four Tops. Amazon is a great source for purchasing your music materials.
Four stars for four tops........2006-07-02
Memories - but not all of their most popular songs are featured on this 108 plus minute ( which seems edited and choppy ) 2004 concert recording from Detroit.
My main gripe is that this should have been shot in HD and used DTS to enhance the quality of this programme, even though the picture and 5.1 sound are both good.
The high and emotional point of this concert was when Levi Stubbs - the original group leader before his stroke - was introduced in his wheelchair and one could see the effort and emotion that he put in trying to remember and regain his former vocal prowess; a touching moment indeed.
Featured guests include Aretha Franklin, Mary Wilson (Supremes), Ashford & Simpson, and Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, etc).
Note that the guests and artists interviews are mixed with the concert footage, thus making a lack of flow to the music.

YOU STILL CAN'T TOUCH THE TOPS !!!.......2007-05-15
this is all four original FOUR TOPS : LEVI, LAWRENCE , DUKE , AND OBIE . You must understand, this performance was recorded in 1996 - actually OVER 40 years after they'd formed , and this is the last filmed performance with LAWRENCE , filmed only MONTHS before his death... and he was probably very much aware he had only a short time left....yet , DESPITE THAT ,AND THEIR ADVANCED AGE, the TOPS still came out and did a performance that simply SMOKED AND PUT TO SHAME PERFORMANCES BY GROUPS HALF THEIR AGE!!!! TODAYS GROUPS WISHED THEY COULD BE HALF AS GOOD...AND I DARE ANY OF THEM TO BE ABLE TO LAST HALF AS LONG !!!
I love the four tops! They were a major part of the MoTown scene.......2007-01-08
I love the Four Tops, I have miost of their albums. I recall during the DIsco Era in the 70's these guys
were still hot to play and mix in on the dance floor. In fact when I couldn't get the floor up dancing
in smaller places, nothing got them up like playing the hits of the Four Tops, Diana Ross, and many
other staples of that era. why the Motown era fit so well in to the Disco era, I can only suspect that
their music was know by most all, (it is still played at weddings all the time), and it was great "get up
sing and dance" music.
It clearly looks like the video from the DVD was taken from fairly low quality tape, and I mean
what one would expect from converting a VCR tape RAW to a DVD sadly. It is difficult to watch
compared to the quality of the video of groups performing at that time. Looks OK on a notebook
display, but on my 52" Hi-Def Plasma, it was difficult to watch. I believe that is because my
expectations are higher as many releases are being cleaned up using more advanced video
technology, and even original tapes are being re-mastered to 5.1. sadly this looks like it was
slapped together without the advantages of any of the new processing. I would gladly pay
3X dollar value if they cleaned it up.
I saw people talking about the sound, and that was not the sticking point for me.
This was like watching a well worn VCR tape with dirty heads. I hope, as a fan, the producers
reconsider, but alas I am sure it boiled down to $$$ :(
Poor sound quality.......2004-05-27
I got this DVD and was very dissapointed with the quality of sound on the 5.1 surround sound. My front side speakers and back speakers have no sound to speak of so the centre speaker does all the work. The video is of average quality but a good sound package would have really made the difference.
they were such a unique group.......2004-05-25
i have watched this dvd a lot.these guys were such a unique group of all times and you could see in this that although age and poor health was agaist their will, still their perfomance was so great.to all those people who are complaining about this show i suggest you go to Ebay and find out if they still got TEMPS&TOPS or all the SOULTRAIN VOLUMES FROM 1 TO 20 and there you will catch the FOUR TOPS at their best.otherwise they have tried their best in this dvd and is watchable quality.
THE ONE AND ONLY FOUR TOPS!.......2004-04-11
There can only ever be ONE - TRUE - FOUR TOPS and this is LEVI - LAWRENCE - DUKE & OBIE - 2004 is their 50th Anniversary together sadly Lawrence left just after this was recorded. LEVI STUBBS JR is at his Best with the opener MCARTHUR PARK and my all time favourite track ASK THE LONELY!
Okay they may not be quite the same as in the 60's when they signed with MOTOWN or 1954 when they first formed as THE FOUR TOPS - but they still sound so good! and true performers.
Currently LEVI is not performing with the Group, so this keeps us going with the MEMORIES - that NO ONE can ever take away.
THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE - FOUR TOPS
Thanks Guys! - John
Description
March 1970We are in the Joinville studios near Paris, where the well-known Motown group, The Four Tops, have been joined by the best studio musicians in France as well as three American musicians who were brought to Europe by special invitation. The Four Tops have become an institution in Motown, as has the record label that originally recorded them. In that marvelous period between 1964 and 1970, these sons of Detroit's tough North EndRenaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Lawrence Payton, and Levi Stubbslived at the north end of the pop charts. A dozen of their first 15 releases made the top 20, and five crashed the Top 10. Few of the millions who bought these "Rock n' Soul" singles realized the quartet, which formed in 1954, had spent a decade as an accomplished live jazz act, applying complex vocal harmonies to sophisticated standards and show tunes. Program includes Sunny, Little Green Apples, I Will Turn to Stone, This Guy's in Love with You, Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me, Mack the Knife, Shake Me Wake Me (When It's Over), By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Baby I Need Your Loving, Reach Out (I'll Be There).

The Four Tops - Performing 10 Complete Songs.......2007-01-23
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS CRAP. I was very disappointed in the whole thing, the quality the sound, and where they were performing. They were at rehersal singing these songs. It was a waste of time and money for me. Take this review seriously Please DON'T spend your money on this.
Great Collectors DVD!.......2004-12-29
I love the Four Tops, so seeing this DVD for sale was a dream. It is the funniest behind the scenes look at a Motown group the public has been allowed to see. The Four Tops are the goofiest group of men I've seen and I loved watching them perform. They perform some of their hits like "Reach Out, I'll Be There" and "Shake Me, Wake Me." They also perform other songs like "Little Green Apples" and "Mack the Knife." I think they do this very very well. Overall, a very interesting look at a legendary group. No, this is not their greatest hits DVD compilation or a concert, but it's a good behind-the-scenes look at the group.
an unexpected treasure.......2004-07-04
Another in Kultur's growing line of pop music documents. I popped this one in my player and sat down, thinking it was gonna be another of those 'greatest hits in concert' videos that are a dime a dozen for popular artists like the Four Tops, and, frankly, tend to be just processed tripe for the Philistine masses. This ain't that, so prepare to be disappointed if that's what you're looking for. As this one started playing, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's not just another slick production piece, but instead is a behind the scenes look at a vocal group at the top of their game. Filmed on a soundstage near Paris without an audience, we see here Levi Stubbs, Obie Benson, Duke Fakir, and Lawrence Payton rehearsing ten songs, along with a backing group of French session musicians and a handful of American players. The songs are some of the ones that made the Four Tops great, and a few more that you might not expect in a compilation like this. A brief introduction from the narrator as we see the artists filing into the studio and getting ready for the session. Then it's right into the songs, and fine ones they are. The production values of the video are good, and the dolby stereo sound is adequate. This was filmed in 1970, but it looks and sounds great more than three decades later, running about 45 minutes or so. If you're a fan of the Four Tops, you definitely need to see this. If you've got only a casual interest in pop music, this is not as essential, but definitely worth your time and attention. I recommend it.
Horrible.......2004-04-28
Anybody who likes this DVD has blinders on or is related to one or more of the Tops. It will not add to the Four Tops legacy but it will definitely tarnish it. You'd be better off throwing your money down a rat hole than spending it on this DVD.
Disappointment.......2004-04-19
My error in expecting a compilation of greatest hits on a CD...compounded by very poor performances in a questionable recording situation. A really bad piece of work! Wish I could return the item...will probably place it in a future White Elephant sale. And these gentlemen are really top notch...perhaps one could look at it as a piece of history to justify the purchase.

Before The Tracey Ullman Show and Absolutely Fabulous, the short-lived 1985 Britcom Girls on Top helped launch the careers of Ullman and Jennifer Saunders. This two-DVD set contains seven episodes from the show's two seasons. Girls on Top, like the cult fave The Young Ones, charts the sometimes surreal misadventures of four mismatched roommates. Anchoring the series is Dawn French (Saunders's partner in comedy) as Amanda Ripley, a "decent, solid, and frumpy" feminist (if they ever Americanize this series, Rosie O'Donnell would be a natural as her counterpart). Ullman is brazen blonde bimbo Candice. Transplanted American Ruby Wax (an acquired taste) is brash aspiring actress Shelley. Saunders scores with her signature lumpen slapstick as Jennifer, who is described as having "the mental age of four." Venerable Joan Greenwood (The Importance of Being Ernest, Tom Jones) costars as Lady Carlton, the addled romance writer who lets their apartment, and whose cherished companion is her dead, stuffed dog. Look for Alan Rickman in the first episode. Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid in the Harry Potter films) guest stars as a hapless kidnapper in perhaps the set's funniest episode, "C.O.D." It's not absolutely fabulous, but fans will enjoy this nascent glimpse at four--well, three at any rate-of Britain's funniest women. --Donald Liebenson
Description
Meet Amanda Ripley (Dawn French), Shelley DuPont (Ruby Wax), Candice Valentine (Tracey Ullman) and Jennifer Marsh (Jennifer Saunders), the unlikely roommates who share an apartment under the watchful eye of landlord Lady Carlton (Joan Greenwood). Whether it is a kidnapping for ransom, a low-budget re-make of Gone With the Wind or a romance with Prince Andrew, these girls find themselves in the most ridiculous situations.

Not completely lacking.......2004-04-10
I thought that overall, this series was worth buying. The sound problem is fixed..for those of you wondering. As for the series, Ruby Wax's character is the only complaint I have..she was a bit irritating, the series is not laugh out loud funny like Ab Fab, but if your a hardcore Ab Fab or French and Saunder's Fan, then you'll want to add this to your collection. The episodes and characters grow on you after you watch them a few times.
It's not completely lacking..more of a "collector's item" but worth having..but just so you know the episodes are not in order..the company that made this dvd (BFS), is not the brightest..
The dvd quality is fine, the sound is fine, but the picture flickers a few times here and there..nothing really noticeable except that the same trivia is on set one and two.
A must for French and Saunders completists.......2003-05-30
Since I'd been hoping to find this show on video or (better) DVD, I was delighted finally to be able to buy the complete series. Other reviews that mention poor quality audio should not concern you: I have both sets and the audio is fine for the age of the program.
Video quality is satisfactory.
If you haven't seen this show, you won't find the sophistication of AbFab, but if you like Rude Girl shows in general this should appeal to you. Ruby Wax is brassy and loud (revealing a lot about her real upbringing, too, if you read her autobiography "How Do You Want Me?"). Dawn French is bossy, and Jennifer Saunders catatonic. My favourite is the perenially shallow Candice, played by Tracey Ullman.
If female comedy is your thing, you won't be disappointed.
Classic 80's Comedy.......2003-03-18
I just want to let you know that these two dvds are great' you get the complete 2 series and although I was worried that the quality was going to be [poor] I can tell you that they are great' they must have sorted out the sound problem that is mentioned in the other reviews' this is a program that I have wanted for ages as I never missed it when it was first shown when I was a kid; all the actresses are well established now and its nice to see them when they where all unknown' anyway they are two dvds that you can buy and if you are a fan then check them out' I highly recomend them (the only problem that I have is that they are not in order but that dont matter they are great and as I said earlier you get all 13 episodes on the two seperate dvds for sale)
The only thing that I dont understand is that they are not avalible in England' this is the only place that I have found them' but who cares Ive got them now.
I hope you enjoy them.
BEN
A little uneven, but very entertaining.......2003-03-12
These women were just beginning to hit their stride as writers performing their own material during this series. I think they really had their characters down, although the plots are sometimes frayed or not completely nailed.
The most difficult aspect of both these sets is that they are not presented in chronological order-- both seasons are all mixed together, and the finale of the series is in Set 1. I really wish BFS would do a better job allowing us here in the U.S. to view these series as they were presented originally.
Interesting that in the Filmographies, neither Jennifer Saunders or Dawn French mention their work in the Young Ones. It'd be nice to get ahold of the older Comic Strip Presents series as well (MTV did show several of those performance pieces.)
Below Expected Standards.......2003-03-09
Although I loved the cast, the material was WAY beneath their usual brilliant resumes. What a waste. For true fans only. I for one had to get it because I am a fan, but I cannot recommend it in good faith. Good luck.
