Customer Reviews:
Another Great Ella Concert!.......2007-02-05
Here's another treasure of Ella's! I highly recommend this DVD, Ella again displaying her gifts, a nice mixture of swing\jazz, ballads and two current songs of 70's and some amazing scatting!!!
Ella is on Fire .......2006-02-25
This is Ella at her later best, If you never saw Ella live during the 70's and 80's here is your chance! Albeit short it is very good, Ella's later years I think she was more creative especially with her scatting. I highly recommend, it's probably less money than price of the original ticket for the performance, Everlasting Ella Fitzgerald. Jerry in Seattle
A great concert!.......2006-01-25
This showcases how even in her later years Ella was a master of jazz, improvisation and communication through musical jazz. I wish the DVD were longer; but the quality of Ella's work is worth the price. The Tommy Flanagan Trio does an excellent job of accompanying Ella as they always did. I would recommend this DVD for Ella fans and for fans of jazz in general.

Immaculate.......2007-04-20
This trio set from 1977 shows off the immaculate skills of the great Tommy Flanagan. Best known as an accompanist, for among others Ella Fitzgerald, here he gets a chance to stretch out in his own right.
The numbers played are:
Barbados
Heat Wave
Some Other Spring/Easy Living
Star Crossed Lovers/Jump For Joy
Woody 'N' You
Blue Bossa
Accompanying Flanagan are Bobby Durham on Drums and Keeter Betts on Bass.
Like all the DVD's in this series the playing is of the highest standard, so you won't be disappointed.
Excellent performance, poor camera work.......2006-04-04
The Detroit-born Jazz pianist Tommy Flanagan(1930-2001) is probably one of the most underrated Jazz pianist of all time. He was well known as accompanist for Ella Fitzgerald and sideman for John Coltrane. However,he never gained the reputation and credit as Jazz Megastar as he deserved. Probably he was never a showy person either on or off the piano.
Ever since I had his recording "Giant Steps"(enja)years ago, he has always been one of my favorite Bop player, along with Bud Powell. If you want to experience saxphone phrasing on piano, do not miss "Giant Step" by Tommy Flanagan.
This is the only color DVD concert footage that I know of T.F. The camera work is disappointing compared to Oscar Peterson Solo 75& Trio 76. The shot is either too far away from the back of T.F or too close to the hand that does not demonstrate his flow or fingerwork. The young Bobby Durham (drummer)actually got the better shot in this show and was having a good time.
Musically, this is without doubt terrific even in Tommy Flanagan's own standard--elegance,superb articulation and shifting. If only the camera man could have done a better job.
Still recommend for Tommy Flanagan's fans.
