The Christmas Shoes bounces between two families--the Layton household, where father Robert (Rob Lowe, The West Wing) is so consumed with his work that he misses his daughter's recital; and the Andrews home, where mother Maggie (Kimberly Williams, According to Jim) has been diagnosed with a fatal heart ailment. Desperate to make his mother's last moments happy, Maggie's son Nathan struggles to buy a pair of red dancing shoes that seem like a pair Maggie remembers from her childhood. Naturally, the lives of these families become intertwined, particularly when Robert's wife takes over Maggie's choral program--which topples the already troubled balance between Kate and Robert. Perhaps because Rob Lowe is usually stereotyped as glib and insincere, The Christmas Shoes feels surprisingly heartfelt. The earnestness of The Christmas Shoes surprises because the story originated in the famously sappy country song of the same name, and movies based on songs rarely feel anything but plastic and contrived. There are certainly moments when The Christmas Shoes lays on the sentiment woefully thick, but you'd have to be an ogre not to be touched when Maggie and her husband have one last dance. Also featuring Dorian Harewood (Roots: The Next Generations). --Bret Fetzer

My whole family cried when we watched this heartwarming story of a child's unfailing love for his mother. For all dad's who work too much out there...sit down and watch this with your family! It just might change your perspective on life.

It's All About Andy.......2007-01-17
The reason I wanted to buy this DVD was because I really miss the old fashioned Christmas Specials. It seemed they used to go to alot of trouble with the sets, had great guests, and they all just seemed so happy and Christmasy!
Yes, the Osmond Brothers are featured, and they were great to watch, as they are such an incredibly talented family, but there were no other guests except for people that I assumed were part of Andy's family, but who weren't introduced, and so I'm not sure. It really would have been nice to know who they were and how they were related. It would also have been nice to see some other guests, as that is always such a big part of Christmas Specials. I guess I was expecting that.
This is The Andy Show. Lots and lots of close ups of Andy, posing and singing goofy-eyed into the camera. The sets are a hoot, as are the funny styles of the day, which was expected and fun to see, but what wasn't expected was how much Andy comes across as quite full of himself (he really does!), and I don't remember thinking that about him before. We didn't finish watching the whole DVD.
Would I watch it again next Christmas? Well, it will have been a year by then, and I will have forgotten most of the negatives, so yes, maybe on a slow TV night if my husband is out. I don't think he'd watch it again.
Knowing what I know now, would I buy this DVD again? Yes I would, if only to see the Osmond Brothers, but I also would have tried harder to get the Bing Crosby DVD, which says it features other guests on it.
Nostalgia.......2007-01-16
I bought this for my Mum who is 94. She absolutely loved it and I did too. It's just what we wanted to see - the old Xmas shows with Andy and his brothers and the Osmonds when they were very young - so cute! Brought back many wonderful memories of christmas. Defintely worth buying if you grew up with these shows.
Great Gift.......2007-01-10
Perfect gift for yourself or others who grew up with Andy Williams and looked forward to his Christmas shows every year!
The Best of Andy Williams Christmas Shows by Andy Williams .......2007-01-10
I'm 49 years old and I was one of the younger people at his Christmas show this year (2006). I won't go into how I wound up at Branson Missouri, but I'll say this - Andy Williams is a freakin' force of nature. He's older now, but his voice and stage presence is increadible. I'm so thankful I got to see him live. This DVD is just great. It is the next best thing to being there. I'm well pleased with my purchase and definitely recomend it to anyone!
Terrific, wish it would go on!.......2007-01-10
This is Great. I wish it showed each show in it's entirety! It brings back old memories of when the whole family sat around one TV! I remember each show that is on this DVD

The best Christmas material from two-and-a-half decades of Saturday Night Live is collected in this video, which gets off to a raucous start by presenting Chevy Chase's (literally) unbalanced rendition of President Gerald Ford decorating the White House Christmas tree. A number of memorable Christmas satires appear, including Eddie Murphy's spoof of Mr. Rodgers, Ana Gasteyer appearing in the "Martha Stewart Topless Christmas Special," and even Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song." Some of the best material is from the show's early freewheeling years: a classic bit with guest Candice Bergen, playing an uptight newswoman, being suitably offended while interviewing an irresponsible and utterly sleazy toy manufacturer (Dan Ackroyd); John Belushi doing a silent yet brilliant turn as a hard-drinking department store Santa; and the entire original cast taking part in an elaborate (by the show's early standards) production number. Also appearing in the video compilation are cast members Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, and Dana Carvey, as well as guests Steve Martin, Danny DeVito, Paul Simon, William Shatner, and Alec Baldwin (who visits the NPR ladies to deliver a wickedly deadpan talk about his Christmas balls). Saturday Night Live has been notoriously uneven over the years, but this video is a full stocking of consistently inspired writing and performances. --Robert J. McNamara

Leave Me Alone! Please Go Away! I'm Doing Fine ! Just Go Away!.......2006-11-29
Each and every year, I look forward to SNL's holiday special. There are so many hilarious bits that've aired over the years that the show never disappoints. Naturally, when this DVD was made available, I bought it right away.
Now, for my money, this DVD is worth it for the "Dysfunctional Family Christmas Album" ad alone, but there are lots of other bits that are fantastic, too. Eddie Murphy's classic "Mr. Robinson" is great, as is Steve Martin's "Christmas Wish". No SNL Christmas DVD would be complete with Candace Bergen & Dan Aykroyd in "Consumer Probe" (featuring Dan Aykroyd as the head of Mainway Toys, makers of "Bag O' Glass" and "Johnny Switchblade: Adventure Punk"), or the original "Not Ready For Primetime Players" singing "Winter Wonderland". These sketches are featured along with Adam Sandler's "Hannukah Song" and Jon Lovitz in "Hannukah Harry" (yes, it IS on the DVD, contrary to some other reviews posted).
Like many other reviewers, I was very disappointed that the classic "Sweeney Sisters" Christmas sketch (featuring William Shatner) was not included. In my opinion, "The Sweeney Sisters" bit was one of the funniest things ever on SNL and to exclude this sketch from the DVD seems completely ridiculous. For this reason, I can't give the DVD full marks.
It's a great DVD, though, and I get a lot of laughs every time I watch it. Definitely worth the money.
Needs a Part II.......2005-12-12
Excellent collection of skits that will get multiple viewings out of any SNL fanatic. A reviewer mentions that there's no "Haunaukah Harry" skit; don't worry, it's definitely there ("on Hershal, on Moshe, on Shlomo!!").
What's here is great, but there are so many more to include. Someone already mentioned the lack of Sweeney Sisters. There was also a great Christmas "Mommie Dearest" skit with Gilda Radner & Jane Curtin that I'd love to see. If I'm not mistaken, there was also an "Uncle Roy" themed Christmas skit. I don't believe there's any Will Farrell on here, nor are there the Christmas Greetings from Frankenstein, Tarzan and....I forget the third person.
Release part II!!!
SNL at it's best.......2005-08-17
This is one to show at the annual Christmas party. My VHS version is about worn out so the DVD will get it's workout in years to come. Memorible performances from the "original crew" that puts a smile on your face during "the season".
No Sweeney Sisters?.......2005-01-26
I bought this assuming for some reason that the Sweeney Sisters Christmas skit was here, because i saw Paul Simon's name in the credits and he happened to be in one of their skits. Alas, NO Sweeney Sisters skit was to be found. That's minus 1 star. Also deduct another for including the dysfunctional christmas skit INSTEAD of the Sweeney Sisters. The latter is even funnier than the Rita from Brooklyn skit, though i do like seeing Cheri Oteri included in this dvd.
wICKEDLY FUNNY STUFF FROM SNL.......2004-12-07
Since the beginning, Saturday Night Live has always given us brilliant holiday sketches. This collection combines the classic original cast, right up to recent casts of the late 90's.
The list of skits includes:
Candace Bergen interviewing Dan Ackroyd as ruthless toymaker Irving Mainway who sells toys like "Bag O' Glass" and Johnny Switchblade Punk action figure.
John Lovitz who has to fill-in for Santa Clause playing Hanukah Harry...
The Classic Alec Baldwin on NPR radio sketch discussing his Shweaty Balls with Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer...
Steve Martin doing his fireside.."My Wish for Christmas.." routine...
John Belushi as a drunken mall Santa...
The Lost Ending to "It's a Wonderful Life"
Gasteyer as a topless Martha Stewart...
Eddie Murphy doing a "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" bit...
Adam Sandler doing his usual Hannukah song...
All good fun and most of it very good.

Andy Williams, venerable singing star of countless TV holiday specials, performs onstage at his own theater in Branson, Missouri, before an adoring audience in 1993. Decked out in a succession of sweaters and scarves, Williams does 25 Christmas classics, dances with women wearing reindeer headdresses, sings along with a children's chorus, and welcomes special guests Lorrie Morgan and the Osmond Brothers (who show up wearing jackets featuring rhinestone poinsettias and candy canes). A number of youthful men and women appear throughout in various production numbers, usually dressed as Christmas carolers or partygoers (think more scarves and sweaters), while the band performs on a stage decorated with Christmas trees and lots of fake snow. This is a very professional production, and if it's schmaltzy and utterly middle-of-the-road, that's no doubt what Williams intended. --Robert J. McNamara

Andy Williams Christmas in Branson.......2007-01-19
Enjoyed this very much - they don't make Christmas specials like these any more and it's great to reminisce and enjoy some of the good, old-fashioned Christmas music during the holidays
Andy Willilams Christmas Show Live From Branson.......2007-01-11
This is a great show to have for Christmas. The show is well paced, costumes and staging are excellent. The voice of Andy Williams and his style makes this the type of show that you can watch repeatedly. Most enjoyable!
Feel Good .......2007-01-11
If you can't be in Branson for the actual show, this is a good substitue.
andy williams christmas show.......2005-10-07
Andy Williams is wonderful as alsways, he sends across a message of complete happiness and alsways makes me and I'm sure many others feel warm. His voice is supberb even at his age, he is well animated and seems to want to please his audience a quality the younger performers don't posess.
Spectacle enchanteur.......2005-09-01
