Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good (and a bargain to boot).......2006-06-23
Rating: 4.25 Stars
When I first picked up "In Motion", most of the reviews that I had seen focused on how this was low-quality product that had been released against the bands wishes and that it would be a big disappointment to the buyer. Still, I hoped that I might find something of value in a DVD that has since proved to be anything but low quality. "In Motion" is simply a raw but faithful presentation of the two concerts as they happened. Could the sound have been improved by overdubs and remixing? Absolutely. Is the existing mix atrocious? Absolutely not. Aside from the one short dropout in "Eleanor" from the Dynamo concert, the sound remains pretty steady throughout.
As for the video footage, I really like the way that the camera captures Anneke's facial expressions as she delivers those incredible vocals. Overall, every member of the band receives ample time in front of the lens and there are multiple camera angles used throughout to keep things fresh.
The running time on "In Motion" is 85 minutes and consists of the following tracks:
Live at Dynamo Open Air (1996):
- Intro/Eleanor
- Fear The Sea
- Leaves
- In Motion #2
- Adrenaline
- Strange Machines
Music Videos:
- Leaves
- Liberty Bell
Live in Krakow (1997):
- Confusion
- The May Song
- New Moon/Different Day
- Mandylion/Sand & Mercury
- Adrenaline
- Strange Machines
Summary: "In Motion" is a very good snapshot of this outstanding band at this stage in their career. Fans of The Gathering should find this to be a worthwhile purchase.
Some words about this DVD.......2006-05-30
I am a gathering fan since quite a while, I honestly think that in need to understand their music one has to capture the esence of the band's evolution. Through every album since Mandylion I have discovered the complexity of a band that cannot be framed into any category. Anyway, I have realized that we don t need a name or a label to enjoy music, especially when It speaks for itself.
I guess Im writing this lines because I have the need to describe to the world the beauty of this music, but again, It has to be discovered in everyones context.
If you re one of the lucky ones that already Enjoy with their music I have no more to tell you.. Buy this DVD now, especially if you havent attend to one of the concerts. Its amazing.
If you re new at this one. Be Patient Dont rush into it. It will come to you, maybe start with something like If then Else- Anyhow if you get into it, please share the joy.
weak.......2006-02-28
Im a big Nightwish fan and a few reviews on there from wishes to eternity live dvd said get this if you like nightwish. Whoever believes that should be taken outside and shot. this band has no talent average riffs and the singer is below average. If you wanna see skill see dream theater live at budikon, death live in LA.
And for the best female singer, no one compare to nightwish.
Falls short.......2006-02-01
I first heard The Gathering thru my Century Media compilation ID IV. All the positive reviews I heard on the live DVD had me all animated. First of all- I have to tell the people who haven't listened to the band in entirety- this is a POP band. Not bad music but, good well written and composed pop. Anneke sure does bring a lot of individuality to the band- be it positive or otherwise. But she sure as hell turned me off from the entire show. I didn't go beyond the first song in one sitting- and the first video- Leaves which was nicely done. But videos like Liberty Bell and the rest of the show makes one wonder about the type of the audience this band focuses on. And for a Century Media band- and I repeat for a CM band- the musical ability of the band is rather mediocre at best. I have the highest regard for all CM bands I've listened to. I do appreciate that Gathering does have a devoted fan base but for anyone else who would look at this band from a point of being a Century Media band this just ain't worth your dough.
1. Weak 2. Very Good .. Huh?.......2005-03-30
I'm more of a doom/death/black metal fan. I was into theGathering before Anneke joined (they were doomy) and followed along when she did join, because they continued to make interesting music .. even though it was Pop. She is beautiful yes, but more importantly talented. Her range is not really exposed on this DVD, they should release footage from their "How To Measure A Planet" tour (newest material/shows may be way too electronic for many rock fans). There are 2 shows represented on this DVD. One at Dynamo, which is clunky and weak. However, the material from the Krakow performance is FAR better and is representative of how they continue to this day - dark and broody yet with moments of upbeat clarity. It helps that they have some material from "Nighttime Birds" in the set, a more mature and focused album than the "debut" with Anneke.
