Customer Reviews:
A great snapshot of a legendary group.......2007-07-22
This was recorded during the groups 1984 reunion concert tour. The original group disbanded in 1969, as Tommy Makem went on a solo career. The remaining three joined up with brother Bobby Clancy and later Louis Killen to make more successful albums together. Liam Clancy left in the mid 1970's to embark on a solo career, and then joined up with Tommy Makem to form the tremendous duo, Makem and Clancy. This DVD is great because it gives fans a chance to see some moving images of the group, since there is so little material available. The quality of the audio/video is not perfect, as Tom Clancy can barely be heard (some have said that he had Laryngitis at this concert). It also appears to have been recorded over a period of a few nights, as there are slight differences in some of the songs. However, the song selection is great and these minor problems don't deter from the great performance. This would be the last time that the Clancy's and Tommy Makem would reunite, as Tom died in 1990 and Paddy in 1998. Oh, if only a video of the New York reunion concert was available....
A Gem.......2007-04-23
For those who like The Clancy Brothers, this DVD is a must. The Reunion concert took place in the mid 80s in Ireland and the recording was very good but not excellent. Regardless, to see the group in their mature years is a treat. I strongly recommend that the Reunion CD be purchased as well. It was recorded in the US and the song selection is somewhat different. The song selection on the CD is superior in my opinion [although this is a question of taste] and I rate the CD 5 stars.
Oustanding irish energy!.......2005-01-09
The Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem always had the greatest energy. Tommy Makem plays so many instruments as they sing "Brennan on the Moor", "Irish rover", "Shoals of Herring", "Isn't it grand boys", "I'll tell Me Ma", Rocky Road to Dublin", "Carrickfergus", "The Ballad of William Bloat", "Galway Races", "Portlairge", "Jug of Punch", "Wild Rover", "Will ye go lassie go", and "Holy Ground".

A slice of Ireland.......2007-09-17
If you're looking for a glitzy performance like Riverdance, this is not the dvd for you. If you're looking for a slice of Irish culture and music from the 60s-80s, this is it. Most of the performers are not even professionals. There's a clip of a young boy in Buncrana singing Four Green Fields in 1976. It gave me chills the first time I heard it. His voice is amazing. There's a touching performance at Sean O'Riada's funeral sung by Sean O'Se. And there's a very funny looking clip taken in a pub somewhere with an old man singing with his eyes shut and his friend seems to be pumping the song out of him with one hand and holding a pint in the other. I loved this dvd. I'll know I'll watch it again and again.
The "West" is the Best!.......2007-03-14
Want a crash course in pre-Celtic Tiger Irish culture? Viewing the historic archival segments on this video collection of Irish music, song and dance performances captured over a four deade period is like a getting a crash PH.D. on the topic. The DVD has become the 'must have' item if you're a Irish music session hound. Some rough audio and low quality video for certain segments only add to the charm. Pour yourself a pint, tune your instrument, and sit back and enjoy the journey.
Superb archival performance.......2007-01-13
Mutton chop sideburns, bell bottoms and beehives add a charming accent to this delightful collection of traditional Irish dance, music and song drawn from twenty five years (1961-1986) of Irish Public Broadcasting. Many of the performers are unknown in any international sense, but the extraordinarily high standard of virtuosity makes this a real pleasure to watch. The lovely melodies and irresistible beats of traditional Irish performance are truly enjoyable in this bargain-priced, two hour-plus DVD.

Customer Reviews:
If you liked these guys, you'll like the DVD..........2006-04-23
You probably have to be about my age (60+) to have been a fan of the Clancy's in their early 1960's glory days. Sadly I never got to see them in concert, although I lived only an hour from New York City, their home base. I did, however, see them on their famous extended appearance on the Ed Sullivan TV variety show, and that hooked me solidly. The fact that Pete Seeger liked them, Bob Dylan liked them, Peter, Paul and Mary liked them, and the Kingston Trio liked them, helped. They were alternately raucous and reverent in commercializing and popularizing some of the best of the old Irish songs. We're talking about pro-independence anthems, novelty songs, children's tunes, ribald lyrics, and some contemporary American folk creations as well. They just plain always sounded great and were fun to hear. They wear well...some of their tracks I must have heard hundreds of times now without getting tired of them. This documentary is only about an hour and was made in 1984, the year the group had a reunion concert in New York, 15 years since they stopped being "The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem." (Never underestimate Makem's contributions to the legacy of this bunch...he was a vital part.) The three Clancys and Tommy show us their hometowns in Ireland and share some memories of growing up there, and of coming to America via Toronto in hopes of being professional actors. Each was surprised that the singing quickly eclipsed the dramatic careers. There are now lots of Irish musical groups, some from the isle, and some from the states. Nobody sings with as much joy, however, as Tom, Liam and Patrick Clancy and Tommy Makem. This is well-worth watching if you have an interest in folk music and the participants in the famous folk revival of the late 1950's. No, the concert segments do not feature entire songs, but rather a taste of how they looked and sounded back in the days. Buy their reissued CD's for the whole songs. Buy this dvd for a glimpse into the men who made this fine music.
NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT.......2003-10-28
DO NOT BUY THIS DVD/VHS...unless all you want is a documentary on the Clancy brothers. Unlike what the Amzon listing & advertisments suggest, this is only a documentary. There is very little concert footage at all (just small portions of the reunion concert). The documentary is decent for a diehard fan...but make sure you realize that you are only getting a documentary that runs less than the 60 mins the details suggest. While the documentary is somewhat intersting...you are only getting a documentary with a little concert footage.
What a story.......1999-03-01
Every fan of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem should own this video. What a story. What a legacy they have left.

Great show and wait'll you see the "bonus tracks".......2007-07-30
It's a given now that Public TV stations use edited versions of concerts during pledge marathons to entice their viewers to donate by then offering the full concert on DVD as a "thank you gift". Sometimes almost 50% is not shown on the broadcast. Well, it's not that bad with this DVD of the incredibly talented - not to mention really "cute" - fiddle player from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia - Natalie MacMaster.
Originally co-produced by New York's WLIW, in conjunction with Canadian TV and Netherlands TV, this was a "homecoming concert" for Natalie. It was recorded at the large auditorium in Cape Breton where she was born and raided. These shows always need "special guests" and this time she gets banjo extraordinaire Bela Fleck as well as her uncle, traditional fiddler Buddy MacMaster. Add in a brief appearance by her husband, Donal Leahy (and his sister too!) and it becomes a real family affair. At one point the whole Cape Breton Fiddle Association arrives on stage (at least 40 members) to back up Natalie.
The camera work and digital image are superb! Crystal clear!
And, oh yes, the "bonus tracks". The broadcast version was just under an hour. There are 6 more numbers that were cut out. Why? You've got me there. These are some of the shows BEST moments. Natalie tap dances solo to her drummer's beat on "Drum Solo" and Fleck (who duets with Natalie on one number in the broadcast) gets to do a nearly seven-minute solo that covers lots of banjo styles. (with a nod to Earl Scruggs and "the Beverly Hillbillies"!). These two "outtakes alone are reason to get the DVD.
I loved this DVD and so will you!

Description
Danu is the most captivating new Irish traditional music group to emerge since Solas. Composed of seven world class musicians, the group plays a stunning mix of evocative, kinetic instrumentals and stirring songs on this, their first full length performance DVD.
Customer Reviews:
Pure Celtic Energy.......2007-04-12
The DVD starts out strong and only gets better. Simple traditional reels and jigs that grow into virtuoso performances. Highest quality filming and recording put this DVD into a class of its own.
Excellent New Trad Irish Music.......2006-11-03
Danu brings extraordinary musicianship, a nice stage presence and self-deprecating humor to Irish tradiitonal music. The concert itself features variety of instrumentation and vocals, and the extras -- interviews with the band members -- are revealing of the at once ordinary and extraordinary folks who are the band. The sound and video quality is excellent and avoids the overproduced aspects of a lot of music DVDs. if you want to hear what younger Irish traditional musicians sound like these days, this is a best bet.
Excellent performances of traditional Irish music.......2006-08-14
We were introduced to this group by the owner of a bed and breakfast we stayed at near Waterford Ireland. He had heard me say that I was interested in learning to play the bodhrun (traditional Irish hand drum) and played parts of this CD for us - especially the bodhrun solo, and my husband and I were enchanted by the authenticity and skilled performances.
An absolutely wonderful Irish Traditional Music DVD.......2005-10-19
I really want to rate this DVD 6 out of 5 stars. "One Night Stand" music was recorded in one night at Vicar St., Dublin, Ireland. For one small price, you get 27 tracks of absolutely excellent music. From very lively jigs, reels and polkas to gorgeous vocals sung by the lovely Muireann, there is no reason to skip even one track. Extra tracks and interviews are added. I was very impressed with the bouzouki (large, deep voiced mandolin) having an internal microphone, not that common in Ireland for trad music. The effect was excellent. Tom and Eamon Doorley are an excellent bouzouki and guitar team. I was also impressed with the percussion. It's hard to miss Donchadh Gough on bodhran, the big wild man on Irish drum. Interviews and tracks on band history are included. This is a must have DVD for any fan of this genre of music. In my collection, this concert DVD is a good balance to Dervish's DVD (recorded at the Sibin Pub, County Sligo, Ireland), to the Chieftain's Water from the Well DVD (jam sessions all through Ireland with friends), and to the Solas DVD (a Vermont St Patrick's Day concert).
Great live Irish music.......2005-08-30
Danú's "One Night Stand" DVD is a real treat for lovers of Irish music. Each of the band members is a superior musician and brings something special to the mix. The fact that flautist and tin whistle player, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, also is an outstanding vocalist in both the English and Irish languages is an additional huge plus for the band. The DVD does an excellent job of showing the excitement of live Irish music; something that no CD can do, no matter how good it is. The highlight of the DVD is the Danú solo set in which each band member has a chance to shine alone. The DVD has many extras; the interviews with the band members are interesting and well-filmed, and the additional songs, especially "Peg and Awl" by Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, are very welcome. Are there any negatives? Well, I could have done without the dancing puppet that appeared in conjunction with a couple of tunes. Overall, this DVD is a great introduction to a great band. If you wonder why so many people are excited by live Irish music, you will know why after seeing this DVD.

The Dubliners Live by the Dubliners.......2007-01-10
This group sings and plays songs from the 1930's to present day. It is a fun DVD that has a lot of bar songs as well as introductions to the struggles that went on in Ireland from WWII onward.
Description
The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem were one of the most popular Irish singing acts of the 1960s. Forgoing the stereotypical maudlin Irish ballads in favor of lusty party songs and traditional Irish folk songs sung in close harmony, in a few short years they rose from the clubs of Greenwich Village to worldwide tours in front of packed houses. The Clancys are joined on the show by Tom Paxton, one of the finest singer/songwriters to emerge from New York's Greenwich Village coffee house circuit of the early 1960s. The Mamou Cajun Band is the traditional three-piece ensemble of legendary accordionist Cyprien Landreneau, his cousin Adam Landreneau on fiddle, and percussionist Revon Reed on the triangle. Featuring traditional hard-hitting two-steps and sorrowful waltzes, the Mamou Cajun Band was one of the first groups to bring Cajun music to a wider audience, playing the Newport Folk Festival and touring Europe in the early 1960s.
Customer Reviews:
Fun to watch.......2005-08-10
This is not a great video, but for an old dyed-in-the-wool fan
of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, it was fun to watch.
Perhaps it was a little painful, too, to see them over the distance of time, before they developed the fine edge to their
performances. Still, I'll take what I can find but their performance was way too short.
The cajun music was okay. I enjoy that genre but, again, the
band was obviously not used to being televised.
You might enjoy this if you keep the time and experience factor
in mind.

Nourishing The Celtic Roots In All Of Us.......2006-11-12
`Celtic Roots Festival, Vol. 3 is the third of three DVD's containing engaging live performances by marvelously gifted Celtic musicians and singers gathered in the Canadian town of Goderich. The festivities take place in what appears to be a large restaurant or sorts on a rather small stage beautifully decorated to awaken the Irish muse in all of us. A large Celtic cross, a rock wall, a standing stone or two and an assortment of brush and barren branches create the perfect atmosphere for what we are about to hear.
Contents:
Daybreak: Fast Legs / A Traveller's Tale / Mending Wall
Brian Pickell Band: The Hiccup Jig-Burnt River-Dancing Squirrels / Muriel's Waltz-Sourgrass And Granite / My Father's Desk / Coming Home
Gearoid O'Hallmhurain And Patrick Ourceau: Dumphy's Hornpipe-Chief O'Neil's Favourite / The Old Bush-Spike Island Lassies / I Buried My Wife And Danced On Top Of Her-Will You Come Along With Me? / Miss McClouds-The Lady's Pantalettes
Providence: Dooney Rock-The Fly In The Porter / Smugglin' The Tin / Providence Reel-Roscommon Reel-Fred Finn's / Muiris O'Connleain
Like the previous two DVD's, this is an absolutely wonderful production. The cameras are as close to the performers as possible providing an intimate feel to the evening. You almost feel as though you're on-stage with them, truly a magical listening and viewing experience. Don't forget to buy vol. 1 & 2 as well.
