    Verdi Favorites is an ambitious, perhaps even misleading, title for a collection that contains not a note of Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, or La Forza del Destino. Still, there is a lot of first-class material here in good performances from some of Europe's leading opera houses. The absence of Placido Domingo is puzzling but not fatal. Among the noteworthy features are Jose Carreras in I Lombardi; the Arena di Verona Chorus in "Va, Pensiero" from Nabucco and the triumphal scene from Aida; the ensemble singing in Falstaff and Renato Bruson's performance in the title role; Mirella Freni in Ernani; and all three principals (Vladimir Atlantov, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Piero Cappucilli) in Otello. Te Kanawa's Ave Maria is duplicated on Great Puccini Love Scenes, and though it's beautiful in both places it's more appropriate here. --Joe McLellan
