Tour of Alaska.......2007-08-12
It's a great dvd if you're interested in a tour of Alaska and acoustic songs of the Goo Goo Dolls. Very nice pictures of Alaska, its people and countryside, but limited hard driving music. A lot of interviews, meeting of different group members and Alaskan residents. Just beware it's more of a tour guide and pictures than a concert of the Goo Goo Dolls.
Breathtaking!.......2007-05-30
Any fan (casual or die hard) will enjoy this collection of great songs coupled with amazing shots of Alaska. The Dolls seem to really be enjoying themselves, especially Robbie, and you can tell how well it translates into the music. My faves include: the iceberg, the high jump with the locals and Johnny jokingly complaining about the non-smoking bars. I also have the Alanis in the Navajo disc, but this is visually more exciting.
Goo Goo Dolls "Unplugged" in Alaska.......2007-05-26
Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska (Music in High Places Series)
What a hidden little gem of a video. This is so awesome. The scenery is breathtaking and the music
is beautiful. It's great to see the band interact with the locals.....mud sliding with the children, sledding with the dogs, and just plain having fun. John is correct, he does have an awesome job being able to play his guitar on top of a 12 foot chuck of ice. If you are a true GGD fan, RUN, don't walk to get this one. It's worth every penny! Enjoy!
Just great!.......2007-04-28
Fix the writeup on this title please. It isn't Wynonna Judd, it's the Goo Goo Dolls!
Anyway, I bought the Live in Buffalo CD/DVD and fell in love with the Goo Goo Dolls. My wife got me this DVD (my first Music in High Places title). It's a combination of a music DVD and a travel show. The scenery in Alaska is just great and I love the stripped down versions of the songs, especially the drummer just using a shaker and a tamborine on several of the songs.
Make sure you watch it all the way through for the "making of" type stuff and the "music only" selection. You get an extra two songs that way!
Mud Sliding?.......2006-08-03
Not a bad video. The music was pretty good, Goo Goo Dolls sound pretty much the same "live" as they do on their albums...except John R. is a bit flat at certion places. Be sure to watch the "Just Music" portion, the scenery is some of the more awe inspiring for the whole show.
I enjoyed the views of Alaska, and the moutains from the train bit, were beautiful! The "interviews" with the guys were lacking something, John R. is not exactly articulate. But wait till the end, when the "behind the scenes" crew video is shown. That is funny!
And one last note; It was nice how the guys were playing with the local kids. They go "mud sliding", and then interview some of the kids. And it is too cute how the little kids are glowing about; "...I can't believe I went mud sliding with the Goo Goo Dolls!!!!!!!!!" -Mud sliding for those of you out there who haven't seen the video, is exactly what it sounds like.
Anyway, an all around fun watch. If you like "Music in High Places" this would be one to add to the collection!

Great stripped-down music.......2007-07-09
Full disclosure: Huge Ryan Adams fan. He can't do much wrong in my eyes so this review may be somewhat jaded (but then, what reviews aren't?). There are a few annoyances to it as it's not really fun watching stoned people stumble around Jamaica and the commercial bumpers should have been removed for the DVD. He does act a little goofy but not malevolent as some of his detractors would have you believe. The saving grace is that you can select "just the music" from the extras menu. This is definitely the way to go. It was a whole different experience when I chose this option on the second viewing. The tunes, mostly culled from Heartbreaker and Gold, sound great purely acoustic and it's fun watching him enlist the help of local children to sing back up on "Touch, Feel and Lose". For the price, if you're an Adams fan, you can't go wrong with this DVD.
Incredible performance.......2007-02-07
This is a great performance by Ryan Adams in some beautiful places in Jamaica. (I think someone needs to check the description. Wynonna is not on this DVD, but most people get that from the title)
Must have for any Ryan Adams fan..........2006-11-22
Remember MTV Unplugged, where artists did their stuff with acoustic instruments? Well, this film reminds me of that crossed with a travelogue. It is absolutely wonderful to see Ryan just jammin' and having fun... and his little side trips through Jamaica are a trip.
A definate must-have for any true Ryan Adams fan... And I think this DVD would be a great introduction to Ryan's music for some of my friends as well!
Highly reccomended.......2006-11-05
This is an amazing DVD. Ryan Adams of course, as always, is really good in this DVD, great songs and fun to watch!!
Ryan Adams followers will appreciate this disc.......2006-03-04
If you are interested in both the music and persona of Ryan Adams you will appreciate this dvd. Anyone who has ever visited Jamaica will find it all the more entertaining. Several of the past reviewers have already commented on the musical highlights (which were masterfully captured) but for me the most enjoyable aspect of the production was being able to "walk with" the artist along this adventure. Great added features make this a must have for Ryan Adams fans. Amazing-Amazon's quick delivery had this at my door just in time for the weeekend.

Shawn Colvin's personalized brand of acoustic folk finds a pleasing counterpoint in her destination in the Music in High Places series: the island paradises Bora Bora and Tahiti. Wandering around the islands and interacting with the locals, Colvin also finds time to sing several of her tunes in eye-catching locales such as Bora Bora's deep blue surf ("Diamond in the Rough") and Tahiti's beaches ("Kill the Messenger"). Playing songs like "Tennessee" accompanied by native drummers and trying to keep up with local ukulele players on an impromptu version of "Stand by Me," Colvin is obviously having a great time, literally taking her musicianship to places it's never been. Colvin's best songs, "Polaroids" and "Sunny Came Home," take on new life in their stripped-down versions, and the singer's wry sense of humor and stage presence--not obvious on her recordings or videos--also come to the fore, particularly in the bonus behind-the-scenes footage. --Kevin Filipski
Customer Reviews:
Sonically very poor, not a good music DVD.......2007-04-12
The idea of filming Shawn in some beautiful settings is kind of interesting, but the reality is that recording in the wind with location equipment makes for pretty poor sound. I've had this DVD for at least a year now and I find that I never choose to put it on. I'm glad to have it, as a Colvin completist, but I can't recommend it. If you want solo Shawn, the best commercial product is the Live '88 CD.
The highlight of this DVD is Shawn playing one of her songs accompanied by a bunch of island drummers. That was kind of cool. I believe this was filmed as a DirecTV music special, and it fares better in that context. As a music DVD though, there are so many better productions than this.
Actually, I think the best is actually Shawn's single track on the Best Of West 54th DVD.
Wonderful DVD I loved it!.......2006-06-07
I love Shawn and her music! She has been an inspiration to me as an acoustic musician, and her alternate guitar tunings have helped me craft songs of my own. I loved this DVD because Shawn performed classic songs like Polaroids, Diamond in the Rough, Kill The Messenger and of course Sunny Came Home in their stripped down versions. As some reviewers have already stated, I too love Shawn's music stripped down. I saw her in concert about a year ago and was mezmorized by her performance. The fact that the DVD has the songs without the voice overs and such is a nice touch and welcomed by this reviewer. If you love Shawn and her acoustic performances, buy this DVD. You will not be disappointed as this is a slice of Heaven as well as a snapshot of her career.
That Voice!! Those Images!! Combined - They Equal Heaven!!.......2003-07-05
I have to admit I'm biased. I LOVE everything Shawn Colvin does. I've been a huge fan ever since I first heard her voice back in 1989. I've seen her in concert (solo & with a full band) more times than I can count. This DVD is wonderful. It provides an opportunity to see a more personal side of Shawn, while enjoying her wonderful music in some of the most beautiful locals in the world. It's a little slice of Heaven. I watched this baby on a 61" TV with a full stereo surround system while kicked back in my trusty recliner. Whoaaaa! That was good - that was very good indeed. Now, if they would only put out a collection of Shawn's videos on DVD. Then all would be right with the world.
Yuck!!!!.......2002-10-07
I like Colvin as an artist; she is incredible. This DVD is not her fault -- well, that is an assumption -- she did agree to it. So why two stars and not one? She is in it. If you love Colvin *and* like artists standing around in water singing to to nature with the sound of the wind and the ocean on your tracks along with the singing, then go and buy this. I am sure this DVD will play beautifully on a large screen plasma TV at some corporate function. However, if you love the artist and the music, then my advice is to avoid this effort. It is simply too painful to watch.
What person came up with this idea? Good lord: Even the camera work is silly. No. Not silly. Just atrocious. Diamond in the Rough (which honestly looks voiced-over) starts the first 30 seconds as a singing head shot. I am not kidding! No guitar can be seen, just a singing head! After a while, camera pulls back and there is Colvin up to her shins in shimmering blue water, her ethnic dress is partially wet, with her blue shades (sun does looks awfully bright) singing. Of course, we are again treated to the sounds of waves and wind. Egads!
Of course, the engineering of the DVD is just as silly: After each song ends -- and you go back to the main menu.
I love this artist -- so much so, that I scour the web for any performance version of her. I am not trying to be mean or spiteful here, but this DVD is simply nothing more than a monument to artsy-fartsy, superficial filming at its worse. However, the real kiss of death, and the bottom line reason for such a low rating is this: There is no energy here -- none. If you have seen her performance on the Sessions at 54th Street DVD or seen her live, you know what I mean. There is nothing going on here -- nothing.
This DVD is a compilation of one flat rendition after another of some wonderfully nice songs. It is just about the most pathetic attempt at film making and ranks as *the* most flat performance I have ever seen. Talk about DOA.
Music video for Adults.......2002-10-04
Geez - what a pleasant surprise this was ! Sometimes these videos can be a big letdown - but this was very nicely done. Shawn Colvin songs are always best in there most stripped down version. In my opinion her live and acoustic versions always outshine the studio cuts - and all these songs are simply guitar and voice in some strikingly beautiful settings. What's really amazing is how good the sound is outdoors with the water and breeze - it just adds to the music. One really gets the feeling that your spying her playing the songs alone on the beach. There's also sections of the DVD that are travelogue of the trip there - those parts were ok - but I'm not sure I want to watch them a zillion times - so the DVD allows you to play just the music.

Angie Stone is Amaaaaazing.......2006-03-20
Angie Stone rules and it's a shame she doesn't get the props she is due. Everytime I watch a live performance of her, I get more convinced that she will be classified as one of the greats of our era. This dvd is amazing, she sings all my faves and she sounds great on every song. For all Angie Stone fans, you need to get the Pure Sessions dvd, she really gave a funky performance in a small intimate setting. You'll feel like you were in the club. Everybody in the club looked like they were having a ball. Personally, I feel that other soul singers (jill Scott, Erykah Badu & Alicia Keys) cannot hold a candle to her. The only person that comes close is Jill Scott. Please support a true artist.
Great Performances!.......2003-12-20
Angie Stone rules. The performances on this dvd are excellent except for one : "P!$$3D OFF". You can't hear the 2 backup singers very well like you can on the other performances. It seems like if there was a problem with their microphones and wasn't noticed. The dvd is also a little disappointing because Angie didn't perform any songs from "Black Diamond"
