4 out of 5 stars A Great Singer of Russia.......2005-11-18

It may be arguable that for Dmitri Hvorostovsky a better version of "Largo al factotum" could have been chosen than the one (concert in Moscow in 1992) in this DVD, but the previous reviewer apparently doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

2 out of 5 stars Vanity Parade.......2005-11-01

This disk contains a selection of archive footage of the most prominent Soviet opera singers, starting from 1950s onward, some of it common, some rarely seen. Commentary is frivolous, superficial, and exaggerated. One real gem, for which I give this disk its 2nd star, is young Galina Vishnevskaya as Aida (one of the few of her video records that escaped spiteful destruction by the Soviets). Vishnevskaya has a beautiful, strong but gentle voice, impeccable technique, inborn musicality and, which is most remarkable among soprano singers these days, darn good looks. A final scene from Carmen with Arkhipova and del Monaco is also of interest, mostly because of del Monaco's excellent singing and acting. Arkhipova sings in Russian, del Monaco in Italian, which gives this murder scene, which should be performed in French, a schizophrenic touch. Older singers, like Petrov and Arkhipova, had big voices and solid technique but obviously didn't feel for the music they performed (with the exception of Vishnevskaya). Brezhnev's darlings, "opera party bosses" Obraztsova and Nesterenko, are truly terrible. Deafening, rude voices, rude techinque, utterly un-musical mal canto. Atlantov is an exceptional tenor with assidiously acquired Italian technique, though he doesn't really give a damn about music: he is all out for career. The worst is the latest "label clown," Mr. Khvorostovsky: small voice, amateurish, poor performance; a shameful failure who passes for an opera singer only in the milieu of total musical ignorance and corporate marketing. Don't expect much from this disk but do rent it for Vishnevskaya's clip: she was real!
