Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fun look at High Sierra.......2006-05-30

"Hitting the High Notes" is a fun documentary of the High Sierra Music Festival. High Sierra is of course the West's ultimate music festival. Large enough to get big name acts but small enough to feel intimate, there is always magic during the Fourth of July weekend in Quincy, California. Through the program, the viewer gets to meet festival goers, organizers and musicians. There is a balance of song excerpts and entire tunes. Musical highlights include the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Hot Buttered Rum String Band. At the expense of the more rockin', jazzy and worldly acts, the program leans heavily on the Americana. One of the critiques thrown at "Hitting the High Notes" is that the production quality is low. While it wasn't shot on film and doesn't have the polished feel of "Woodstock" or "Jam in the Dam," that isn't necessarily a drawback. Perhaps this should best be appreciated as an indie or neo-hippy art house release. This DVD can be a memento for anybody who's experienced High Sierra and a good introduction for those who've been unable to attend. "Hitting the High Notes" is a fun look at the West's best music festival.

5 out of 5 stars A very unique concert film.......2005-04-08

The High Sierra Music Festival is a mecca for fans of jam and roots music. Set in a gorgeous location and featuring 85 bands over the course of four days, High Sierra has something for everyone. Hitting The High Notes is a very watchable DVD which captures many aspects of the festival - both on and off stage. As a bluegrass lover, my favorite performances are from Leftover Salmon (in their last H.S. performance) and Hot Buttered Rum String Band. Particle is a band that I had never heard or seen before but was impressed by their rockin' show and the Radiators version of "Little Sadie" is totally sick. Segments about all the offstage activities serve as a nice break from the stage performances. And Vince Herman's (of Leftover Salmon) antics have to be seen to be believed! My only complaint is that a few of my favorite High Sierra bands weren't included in the DVD but I understand that the filmmakers could only include a select number in the final product. Oh well, I can only hope for another great concert film from this festival. Highly recommended!
