Leonard Cohen--songwriter, poet, former monk, ladies man, and sharp dresser--receives a near-hagiographical treatment in I'm Your Man, a part concert-part documentary in which his work is interpreted by an array of singers. Cohen tributes are nothing new, what with Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat and the multi-artist compilations Tower of Song and I'm Your Fan having preceded this one. But music producer Hal Willner, who has spearheaded similar projects focusing on Thelonious Monk, Kurt Weill, Harold Arlen, and Charles Mingus, is especially skilled at putting together rosters of diverse and unexpected artists, and he's done it again here, matching superstars U2 with the likes of Nick Cave, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Kate's offspring Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Antony Hegarty (of the group Antony and the Johnsons), Jarvis Cocker, and others. Whether all of this works or not will naturally depend on the viewer's point of view. Cohen is no one's idea of a great singer, but he's certainly a distinctive one, with his ocean-deep basso profundo and the slow insinuations of a guy who, having been a Zen monk, certainly understands the virtues of patience; his lyrics, too, are sui generis, personal but rarely mawkish, at once plain and cryptic. To these ears, performances by Orton ("Sisters of Mercy"), Teddy Thompson ("Tonight Will Be Fine"), and the Handsome Family with Linda Thompson ("A Thousand Kisses Deep") come closest to capturing Cohen's spirit without actually impersonating him. On the other hand, the overly mannered stylings of the McGarrigles and Wainwrights are an acquired taste, at best; Rufus' louche posing, affected vocal delivery, and cute, tango-esque arrangement of "Everybody Knows" pretty much overwhelm the song (he's much better on "Chelsea Hotel No. 2"), and Martha's "The Traitor" is scant improvement. Cohen himself appears on just one number ("Tower of Song," with U2), but interview segments are scattered throughout director Lian Lunson's film; now in his seventies, he seems to delight in perpetuating his own legend, serving up elusive comments like "I was alive in the horror" and "Things got easier when I stopped expecting to win." Bonus material includes deleted scenes and more. --Sam Graham

Sure to please both die-hard Cohen fans and the newly initiated, this film is full of captivating music and offers an intimate portrait of a truly singular artist, poet, songwriter, cultural icon.
Customer Reviews:
Painful Production.......2007-09-18
I am a big fan of Cohen and the artists that are on this album. The production quality is painful and distracting from the talent and the message. Sadly I wish this product could have been produced by someone with more expierence. It has the feeling of a film school project.
Better Every Time I Watch It.......2007-08-31
Anyone who wants to reflect on life--its challenges, joys and spiritual context--and enjoy well-produced live music performances at the same time should have this DVD. I've watched it several times and now put it on in the background like any good CD for both the music and commentary. Cohen's stories about his life, his resulting zen-like insights, and the weaving in and out of entire songs make this DVD continually pleasing just for the sake of listening. Cohen tells about his life experience in the rich, personal language of a true poet--universal but not dogmatic, spiritual but not self-righteous, deeply felt but not overly sentimental. The performers are mostly independent singer/songwriters (some from Canada and Great Britain) with rich voices singing a selection of Cohen's most well-known songs.
Mr. Cohen Deserves More Than A Tribute Band .......2007-07-30
A couple of nice ruminations by Leonard, but a lightweight considering what could have been a great documentary akin to the ones done on Thelonious Monk and Dylan's No Direction Home...
Interesting to see U2 and LC together on a good song but while the overall tapestry of the music is nice the singers in Zen parlance are mistaking the finger that points to the moon as the moon..
Too bad Leonard does not do his own movie but then again what would be the point he would probably say, my work is for all and none.
Could Have Done Without the Other Performers.......2007-07-28
Leonard Cohen is one of the greatest songwriters of the last half-century.
The documentary clips and interviews with him are wonderful.
Although there are a few fine performances from the performers in the tribute concert in the film (notably Teddy Thompson's ), one spoken sentence from Cohen himself has more soul than any of the interpretations of Cohen's songs done by others here.
Good, but not what I thought it would be.......2007-06-27
This is primarily footage of other artists covering Leonard Cohen songs. Not that they aren't good covers- Rufus and Martha Wainright are, in particular, excellent Cohen cover artists. I had simply hoped to see some actual Cohen performances. Between the covers are segments of an interview, and those are really interesting. Especially the revelation that one of his more graphic songs is about Janis Joplin. This is a good DVD, but it would have been better if it had included old and recent interviews, as well as more than one performance by Cohen himself. The song he does do was frankly disappointing. It's worth a rental, but not necessarily a purchase.

A Fitting Tribute.......2007-08-31
This documentary is a tribute to the 40th anniversary of a season that deserves to be remembered forever. The footage is incredible, and the interviews are great. There's great bonus footage, including the original t.v. tribute from 1967. Make sure you get the package with the bonus disc, that has the entire next to last game of the season. Quite a historical record that really shows how the game has changed in 40 years.
67 BOSTON RED SOX.......2007-08-23
THIS WAS THE YEAR I BECAME A SOX FAN. IT WAS MY FIRST RED SOX HEARTBREAK BUT IT WAS AN AWESOME TIME. I WENT BACK IN TIME 40 YEARS. IT WAS GREAT.
Brings back great memories.......2007-08-07
Great DVD with most of the material coming from NESN specials aired in 2007. My only disappointment was I thought that the 2nd DVD had the final game of the year vs. the Twins but it actually contains the Saturday (next to last) game.
Great Memories of Impossible Dream Season.......2007-07-24
Anyone who lived through the thrill of the 1967 season will love this DVD set, anyone too young will still enjoy it as it the season is the birth of the Red Sox Nation. The DVD of the next to final game is outstanding, the color is as good as todays. It is also nice to see the difference between broadcasts of 1967 and today. Great stuff, all Red Sox fans would love it.
Heart-Breaking If You're a Twins Fan.......2007-07-17
I remember that weekend like it happened a few days ago. One game up in the standings, two games to play, the Twins had to win only once to go to the World Series. Just one, lousy game...
I've seen parts of the DVD, and will buy a copy for myself. It was great to see Killebrew, Oliva, Yaz, Petrocelli and others of that era again, although I would have preferred to see Sunday's clinching game.
No matter; the late Ray Scott was the Twins'announcer in 1967, and he said he got a gut-wrenching feeling during Saturday's game the Twins would not beat Boston. He said it was one of the most depressing feelings he'd ever experienced as a broadcaster. To us faithful in Minnesota, those losses were as crushing as any a Minnesota team ever suffered. And that includes the four Super Bowls.

It's virtually impossible to approach No Direction Home without a cluster of fixed ideas. Who doesn't have their own private Dylan? The true excellence of Martin Scorsese's achievement lies in how his documentary shakes us free of our comfortable assumptions. In the process, it plays out on several levels at once, each taking shape as an unfailingly fascinating narrative. There is, of course, the central story of an individual genius staking out his artistic identity. But along with this Bildungsroman come other threads and contexts: most notably, the role of popular culture in postwar America, art's self-reliance versus its social responsibilities, and fans' complicity with the publicity machine in sustaining myths. All of these threads reinforce each other, together weaving the film's intricate texture.
Scorsese's 200-plus-minute focus on Dylan's earliest years allows for a portrayal of unprecedented depth, with multiple angles: a rich composite photo is the result. The main narrative has an epic quality: it moves from Dylan growing up in cold-war Minnesota through Greenwich Village coffeehouses and the Newport Folk Festival, climaxing in the controversial 1966 U.K. tour that crowned a period of unbridled and explosive creativity. In his transition from Robert Allen Zimmerman to Bob Dylan, we observe him concocting his impossible-to-describe, unique combination of the topical with the archaic, like an ancient oracle. Scorsese was able to access previously unseen footage from the Dylan archives, including performances, press conferences, and recording sessions. He also uses interviews with Dylan's friends, ex-friends, and fellow artists, and, intriguingly, with the notoriously reclusive Dylan himself (who looks back to provide glosses on the early years), fusing what could have turned into a tiresome series of digressions and tangents into a powerful whole as enlightening, eccentric, contradictory, and ultimately irreducible as its subject.
Some of the deeply personal bits remain unrevealed, but Dylan's preternatural self-assurance acquires a slightly self-deprecating, even comic edge via some of his reflective comments. Alongside the arrogance, we see touching moments of the young artist's reverence for Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash. Joan Baez, in a poignant confessional mood, comes off well, and the late Allen Ginsberg is so seraphically charming he almost steals the show a few times. A crucial throughline is Dylan's hunger for recognition and ability to shape perceptions so that would be singled out as not just another dime-a-dozen folk singer. It's illuminating--particularly for those familiar with the artist's latter-day aloofness on stage--to see his reactions to audience booing in the wake of his "betrayal" in this fuller context. No Direction Home also makes clear--in a way that wasn't possible in D.A. Pennebaker's iconic Don't Look Back--how Dylan's ability to manipulate his persona always, at its core, protects the urge for expression: Dylan's ultimate mandate, as an artist, is never to be pinned down. As Scorsese masterfully shows, the myth around Dylan only grows bigger the more we discover about him. --Thomas May
DVD features: This two-disc set of Scorsese's full two-part documentary includes treats such as Dylan working on a song at his hotel during the UK tour as well as performing several songs as in concert or on TV.

Customer Reviews:
A masterpiece of documentary filmmaking.......2007-09-10
One of the main treats is the wonderful, rare archival footage of 50's-era Hibbing, early 60's Greenwich Village, and numerous original pathfinders of the genre that would become branded by the recording industry as folk music.
The first disk is the most interesting, in that it presents how an artist of Dylan's magnitude is created. From his beginnings as a youth in Hibbing, listening late into the night to performers on distant AM stations, the young mind latches onto their sounds, and the musician-composer begins to develop. We see a great artist growing not in a vacuum, but rather through a compulsion to consume and digest everything around him, and to experiment without boundaries. His extrication from the drab canons of Hibbing becomes as inevitable as the sunrise. An entire generation would aspire to follow a similar course, and for those who would better understand the youthful mindset and energy of the earlier 60's, this is essential viewing (along with a companion, Don't Look Back).
The running narrative by the present-day Dylan lends an autobiographical sense to the documentary. What is revealed is not just the events, but also how he felt about those tumultuous years, a viewpoint available only now that he feels comfortable openly reflecting on these experiences.
Viewers may find the scenes of Dylan in his post-acoustic concerts with The Band a little drawn out, and some of these performances do seem dreadful. The audiences clearly thought so, and perhaps that is the way the filmmaker thought you might see it. This is what Dylan eventually became, right before his motorcycle accident. You are left to decide for yourself whether, at that point in time, he had descended from his best work.
Good perspective.......2007-09-06
There is a reviewer who claims the 1st disc is better than the 2nd disc. The 1st disc is almost worthless, the 2nd disc is a keeper, more relevant to the purpose of the documentary, which is to show the phenomena that was Bob Dylan circa 1961-1966. Visual images reveal Dylan's personality in a way that his recordings do not. Combine his first half dozen albums with the 2nd disc here and you have the complete picture.
Dylan is easily the greatest most influential songwriter of the 1960's-- his influence is undeniable as he gave lyrics a meaning, inspired countless singer songwriters to move away from love songs and write surrealistic songs and produce concept albums. And The Band with Rick Danko Robbie Robertson etc is easily the best rock band of all time. No one influenced Jimi Hendrix more than Dylan. The Beatles Rubber Soul album is Dylan influenced. Dylan's stream of consciousness poetry is unparalleled.
Hey Mr. Revolution Man sing a song for me.......2007-08-20
Bob Dylan sings about us. He lets us in on his childhood to struggle to learn styles to a break at Columbia Records and his instant fame which was not an instant at all.
He sings about individuals. He lets us know as he used to do the rounds of Cafes at New York's Village where he decided to strike a chord with at least one listener. Aiming to target his audience out, he further enhanced his skills and style learning as much in 2 months in the Village as someone may learn in a lifetime of playing music.
If Dylan sold his dirt I would buy it. I am that obsessed with his persona and music.
This documentary does a great job and bringing us his roots. Incredible footage of not just Dylan but that of those artists who inspired him to be what he is. Most of all his love of Woody Gunthrie's music. He grew up from a small town nobody to a National and International sensation.
A man with his voice at that time couldn't even make a buck, while Dylan with his choice of words and topics revolutionised the entire Music Industry.
Country music or mainstream - he is a Rock Star like no other.
Still counting he is publishing more records and setting new standards. Martin Scorcese lets us visit the humble star who talk candidly about his meetings, performances, influences and success. Truly magical world revealed here as we see how from Jack Kerouac's On the Road to a book on Woody Gunthrie feels like home to the teenage Dylan.
A world of misfits and he fits at ease in it. Thinking what others can't dream of, he merges and weaves and intertwines styles and stories to make an incredible form of music with unmatched pace.
This is true homage to the legend that is Bob Dylan.
Thank You "whomever it may concern" for this documentary.
No Direction Home.......2007-07-23
Director Scorsese's masterful portrait of poet/musician Bob Dylan's rise, leading up to the serious 1966 motorcycle accident that signaled a prolonged hiatus from touring. Intimate film makes it evident that Dylan would have taken a break from public performances anyhow, as his mid-sixties tour in England was met with hostility every time the singer picked up an electric guitar, further straying from his sacred folk roots. Fascinating sixties time capsule, and revealing meditation on artistic integrity and the nature of fame.
Great for what it is.......2007-03-20
This documetary was absolutely fascinating and very well executed in every way. That being said, the only thing that was a slight disappointment was that this masterful filmmaker either couldn't or chose not to cover the entire breadth of the career of this truly compelling artist. It covers only the 1960's; granted the time when Dylan was at probably at the peak of his creative powers, but that is only equal to about 1/4 the whole story. At a running time of almost 4 hours, I personally would have liked to see a more complete portrait of the man & his life. That is my only complaint, though. I can still say this film was nothing less than absoluetly riveting and one of the best documetaries I have ever seen and probably ever will see.

Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.
Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.
Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

Zeppelin is the greatest.......2007-09-05
Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever formed hands down, and this dvd proves not only their genius but their perfected playing of their instuments. With Bonham's irremarkable beats and johnn paul jones steady hand they set the tempo for robert and jimmy to just unleash a spectrum of brilliantly mashed together sounds. So if you like to get the Led out then this is definately the DVD for you.
Great DVD!.......2007-08-23
Upon receiving the DVD, I found the package professionally designed. The way the disc was designed to make any song accessible was really well done! All the footage was well enhanced and really allows the viewer see the kind of performance the band gave. In some cases the sound was lower in quality but it was probably because that was all they had to work with; still quite an accomplishment. What I really enjoyed was the extra footage from TV performances the band gave in other countries. They were a rare treat. I'm sure I will enjoy this package for years to come.

This DVD is awsome I saw them in the 70's and it brought back so many memories..If you did not get to see these guys it will be just like you were..These guys are ROCK GODS..I LOVE THEM..So this is a must see. It's worth every penny Jimmy Page did an excellent job..The only thing I can say is it looks much better on my computer than tv.But that is probably because the film was so old. Other than that this is The best next to being there. GREAT JOB JIMMY

Yes, Virginia, there was a Sesame Street before the Age of Elmo. This 1993 collection highlights the role of music in the long-running series from Children's Television Workshop, and reminds us that such Jim Henson creations as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Ernie and Bert were once part of a true ensemble of Muppet superstars. Nothing against Elmo, of course: kids adore him and he makes enough appearances in this anthology (including the show-stopping "Happy Tappin' with Elmo") to keep today's tykes happy. Also included is Ernie's classic "Rubber Duckie" (really, who doesn't know the words to that?), Oscar's anthemic "I Love Trash," you-know-who's "C Is for Cookie," and Big Bird's Big Finale, a rendition of "Sing" that includes the entire cast. There are 27 tunes in all, and they don't all involve singing puppets: Ladysmith Black Mambazo turns up for one track, and the "Sesame Street Jam Session" includes some actual playing of instruments. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Keeps my son's attention.......2007-08-27
My son is only 15 months old & not many dvds keep his attention. I took this with us on a road trip & I'm so glad I did. It kept his attention & he watched it over & over. He was glued to the tv! The songs are fun & the storyline is cute about finding the lala-ers. It has all sesame street characters singing various songs. I found myself singing the songs, they're so catchy.
25th Birthday Musical Celebration.......2007-08-22
I have always been a "sucker" with Sesame Street's programs and the characters, especially Elmo. In fact I bought this DVD album twice, the first one was purchased two years back for my Grandson, but forgot about it. Anyway I could always give it away as gift, to make other children happy.
Although the music selection is from the popular Sesame Street's series, it could have included some of the more popular children's songs. Anyway I am glad they included the song "Rubber Duckie" which is my favourite when first watch Sesame Street with my Son thirty years ago.
It is a good buy for the educational and musical program with some humour for the young ones.
Format doesn't serve the content.......2007-07-27
I love Sesame Street. I love the music especially. I love every single song included in this collection. Unfortunately, the bare-bones production of this DVD makes watching these classic segments a mediocre experience for an adult.
This DVD doesn't have a menu, has awkward chapter markers, and has fuzzy video quality. Most disappointing, many of the included songs have been edited down to being merely clips rather than full songs ("Do the Rubber Duck," for example).
I hope that the Sesame Street: Old School Sesame Street - Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974) series of releases continues, so that I can see and share my favorite Sesame Street memories. The 25th Birthday DVD is an okay stopgap in the short term, but will not satisfy older and more fervent Sesame Street fans.
Captivates my daughter - and makes me laugh!.......2007-06-13
I think this collection is wonderful - my daughter LOVES watching it - she is captivated when it's on. I have tried other shows, like baby einstein, Barney, disney, and so on - but nothing gets her attention the way Sesame Street does. I love it because it gives me a few minutes a day to do things around the house - like fold laundry, make bottles, do dishes, pay bills etc, etc. A MUST have, in my opinion!
My toddler loves this video........2007-05-25
My toddler absolutely loves this video - from beginning to end, he's usually watching with a smile or playing and watching at the same time. Either way, the songs are a huge hit with him. And from a parent's perspective, plenty of stuff I remember enjoying as a child! (My hubby, too.) It's a good mix of songs, enjoyable to watch even as an adult. Definitely a video worth having.

loved it.......2007-09-06
This DVD was great and included all of my favorite sketches with Chris Farley.
It has almost been a decade since he has been gone and I still miss him.
Sadly Forgotten. .......2007-07-17
I don't hear too many people talk about Farley anymore and I think that is rather sad as he was a gifted performer. All of his best shticks are recorded in this DVD but it could easily have been two hours long. One hour does not do justice to the guy in my opinion. Yes, a lot of the great stuff is here such as his Matt Foley character, Bennett Brauer, and the Chippendales skit he had with Swayze. It's enough to heighten your appetite for Farley but not enough to fill you. His death was truly a shame. I think comparisons to Belushi are appropriate, but Farley never had the range or amazing talent of John. Nevertheless, we're worse off without the large fellow.
Hilarious!.......2007-05-09
These are absolutely the funniest skits he did on SNL and I laughed hysterically! I was really excited about getting this DVD and yet it was such a bittersweet experience when I watched it just knowing he is no longer with us.
The Best of Chris Farley.......2007-05-07
The DVD was ok...I had just hoped it would have lasted longer...but it did bring laughter to my house and that was a good thing...

Born on the Berkeley?.......2007-07-26
John Fogerty is not the Cajun Bayou boy he portrays in his music. Born in Berkeley and a true "limousine liberal," he is now and has always been an anti-war and leftist activist. But who cares? After a life and career of side roads and litigation, John brings his classics back to the stage with an enthusiasm and professionalism unmatched in the Boomer music parade. His guitar playing is masterful and original, and his vocals are, well, pure John Fogerty...unique. But the stage presence and easy commaraderie he shares with his side men is just magical. A special delight for me is the twisting of words past the point of recognition as in Bootleg and Fortunate Son. For any Creedence fan, or even those who were just casual listeners, this is a DVD worth having. It is exceptionally well produced and filmed. The excitement on the faces of the multi-generational audience says it all.
The best of the best.......2007-07-22
I have always enjoyed the upbeat sounds of CCR over the years. What Fogerty brings to a music DVD is truly the best of the best. Trademark vocals, upgraded back up band as well as upgraded sound and video technology. You would have never seen anyting like this in the 60s.

More Like 3.5 Stars.......2007-07-13
Let me start my review by saying that I am a HUGE fan of John Fogerty/CCR. Being born in 1984, I was afraid that I would never get to see him in concert, and now I have been to THREE! I have to say that I was quite pleased but just slightly disappointed with this DVD. The performance on it is great as is the picture quality. I thought that the sound quality was fine; for those who thought it sounded weird, did you try setting the sound to digital surround? The 5.1 surround setting did sound strange to me. If you set it to digital surround, it is much better.
My main problem with this DVD however, is the video. Like I said, the QUALITY is great, buth there is something about the way this DVD (and many of today's concert DVD's) was filmed. The video doesn't actually feel "live". Compare it to the Premonition DVD. This one kind of feels more like you're watching a long music video rather than a concert. Not to mention the sound and video are a bit out of synch.
But anyway, it's still great to have a concert recording of John doing several CCR hits that I never thought he would do live again such as "Bootleg" and "Keep On Chooglin" just to name a few.
Rock on, John!
John Fogerty music rocks for all ages.......2007-07-10
I've been a fan of John Fogerty and CCR since their beginning. The students at the high school where I teach ask me to load my Chronicles CDs and play them loud--over and over again. My 83-year-old mom tapped her foot and clapped her hands when I shared The Long Road Home DVD. The smile on her face and the twinkle in her eyes said it all: John Fogerty's music rocks for all ages!

The sun is set. The stars shine in the sky. The night air is tinged with anticipation. And it is time to meet...Christopher Walken. One of the most versatile and gifted performers ever to host Saturday Night Live Christopher Walken proved time and time aFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY UPC: 031398164647 Manufacturer No: 16464

Only the third host to have a "best of" collection (after Steve Martin and Jerry Seinfeld), Christopher Walken showcases his six appearances as host of the show. For the casual fan of Walken's usual edgy film fare, the skits will be eye-opening as he showcases his song-and-dance skills (catch "The Boulevard of Broken Balls" from his first appearance). The Continental, his recurring suave ladies-man character played directly to the camera, is featured twice (the DVD includes a spilt-screen "making of" version along with two darkly humorous skits that never aired). Other skits include Mango's (Chris Kattan) janitor friend Leon who dreams of showbiz, the trivial psychic Ed Glosser (a lampoon of his Dead Zone role), a "Prankster" that goes too far, and music producer Bruce Dickinson (a.k.a. "the cowbell skit"). Walken's wild-man persona is intriguingly tapped as an angry ship captain on a life boat and in a deft skit as a census taker interviewee with Tim Meadows. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
Some of SNL's Funniest (When You Got a Hankerin' For Cowbell).......2007-08-14
There's a reason why Chris Walken has an open invitation to host SNL any time he wants - the guy is hilarious! Certainly one of America's quirkiest actors, Walken delivers comedy in his typical deadpan style. There's just something about his delivery that makes him all the funnier.
Of course this DVD contains the infamous "more cowbell" sketch. However, it also contains one of my all-time favorite sketches featuring Tim Meaddows taking a census from Walken: Meaddows: "How long have you lived here?" Walken: "It's hard to say, what time is it?"
Also featured is the racy "Colonel Angus" sketch which had me in stiches.
The Best SNL dvd I've seen yet..........2006-12-28
This dvd had me laughing so hard~I've watched it so many times and I never get tired of it. These are some of my favorite SNL sketches, including The Continental, Ed Glosser, Pranksters, the cowbell sketch, and Mango...I love it!
Walken has "high concept" moments.......2006-10-01
There is probably no stranger group of skits than the best skits of Christopher Walken (not all of which are on this DVD). Attention will be focused on the more popular fare -- his outings as "The Continental" and his skit with Mango. But the more obscure offering of Walken interviewed by a census taker stands as the oddest funny skit in memory. Walken always seems to teeter on the edge of being mistaken for a pedophile or an ax murderer. His strange cadence, shifting eyes and blank look are the perfect affect for the bizarre statements that come from his mouth, one sentence cleverly layering upon the next. And in another favorite skit, the bizarre hysteria of his band manager ("I need more cowbell") plays well, time and time again. It is sometimes hard to explain to the uninitiated why these skits are so funny. They are funny because he does them, and he is so damn wierd.
Christopher Walken is awesome.......2006-02-26
Christoper Walken is the best SNL DVD. almost every skit is hilarious. The Cowbell is classic. The other great one is the 2000 US Census with Tim Meadows. The Centaur and Ed Glosser Trivial Psychic are also great. His continental skits are funny to see once but never again. The boat captain skit is great, as is the Pranksters.

Visions of Light is not just for film buffs. In fact, if the presentation of the Oscar for Best Cinematography is your cue to take a bathroom break from the Academy Awards, then this exhilarating documentary will help you see movies in a whole new light. Named Best Documentary by the National Society of Film Critics as well as several film-critic associations, Visions of Light traces the history and illuminates the art of cinematography. It profiles the cameramen who pioneered the visual language of cinema (such as D.W. Griffith's cameraman Billy Bitzer and Gregg Toland, who shot Orson Welles's Citizen Kane), as well as the masters they influenced, among them Néstor Alemendros (Days of Heaven), Vilmos Zsigmond (McCabe and Mrs. Miller), and Gordon Willis, the affectionately nicknamed "Prince of Darkness" who shot the Godfather films.
From Birth of a Nation to Blade Runner, from Gone with the Wind to GoodFellas, this feast for the eyes spans nearly a century with sequences from more than 125 movies made immortal by the artful use of light and shadow to realize the director's vision. William Fraker, who shot Rosemary's Baby, recalls filming the scene in which Ruth Gordon's sinister character is seen in a bedroom talking on the phone at the far end of a corridor. Director Roman Polanski suggested that Fraker move his camera so her body would be concealed by a door and audiences could only see her back. Fraker remembers later watching this scene in theaters and seeing the audiences shift in their seats trying to peek around the door. --Donald Liebenson
Description
Experience the dazzling story of cinematography as seen through the lenses of the world's greatest filmmakers and captured in classic scenes from over 125 immortal movies. Discover Gordon Willis's secrets of lighting Marlon Brando in "The Godfather" and Greg Toland's contributions to "Citizen Kane." Hear William Fraker on filming "Rosemary's Baby," Vittorio Storaro on his use of color and light in "Apocalypse Now" and much, much more. From black and white to Technicolor, silent to "talkie," glittering Hollywood musical to film noir and art film to blockbuster, this critically acclaimed masterpiece presents movies in a new and unforgettable light!
Customer Reviews:
Illusions of Reality.......2007-08-27
A remarkably informative and comprehensive review of the history of film and the talented people who have driven the development of cinematography, elevating it to an art form. Critical examples from film archives, enlightening interviews with directors, actors and other professionals, and thoughtful consideration of the importance of lighting. scriptwriting and other aspects of producing a successful finished product which can universally inspire and move people make this a necessary reference for any film buff. Rarely does a great movie emerge by luck, but is the result of countless hours of effort on the part of many people to achieve an illusion which can involve the viewer as much as any real experience of life and sometimes as unforgettably. A similar combination of efforts has produced this masterful documentary under the aegis of the American Film Institute.
Some interesting clips..........2007-05-27
I'm tempted to give this video a 4-star rating, but it seems that when it really begins to shine, it ends. Though there's a lot of information on this video, it covers more "recent" (60s, 70s) movies pretty fast. An update to this video (a second volume, perhaps) would be most welcome to those of us who are interested in less historical examples of cinematic lighting. If you can get your hands on a used copy, it's worth taking a look at--but don't expect a lot (and try not to buy it new, unless you're going to sell it back).
this film sheds light on the art of cinematography..............2007-05-07
VISIONS OF LIGHT is a marvelous look at the world of DPs (directors of photography). These are the masterminds who conceptualize the look of films, behind the lens. We hear from some of the greatest cinematographers in the business. They include Nestor Almendros, John Bailey, Conrad Hall, Michael Chapman, Laszlo Kovacs, Sven Nykvist, Vittorio Storaro, Haskell Wexler, Gordon Willis, and Vilmos Zsigmond. We also see footage from the early days of motions pictures up until today. It's amazing how the evolution of the steady cam gave such new-found possibility to the art of shooting a compelling scene. The scenes that stick out in my mind include those from THE FRENCH CONNECTION and DAYS OF HEAVEN, but these weren't the only ones! It was great to hear from people who come from the world that conceptualizes the art of storytelling through depictions of shadow and light. I highly reccomend this to anyone who wants to be entertained and educated. Very well done!
Beautifully done, but a bit long.......2007-03-12
I learned a great deal watching this video, and I agree with other posters that it's well worth watching, but I have to admit I found myself growing weary about 3/4 of the way through. I think I might have enjoyed it a bit more if it had been divided into a few segments - maybe chronologically. After a while I just felt like I was having example after example thrown at me with no breaks or time to breathe.
Having living professionals talking about their experiences with some of the legends was a good touch, although I found the huge variation in the sets and lighting of them a bit distracting... maybe mentioning who created them or why they were so different would have helped. Otherwise it kind of damaged the continuity.
Overall, though, a hugely informative video for film lovers.
A little more entertaining than educational.......2007-02-16
I purchased this DVD to get some insight on cinematography: techniques, styles and a little history. This DVD is reasonably good at taking the viewer from the early days of cinema until the late '80s and early '90s - so there is a good amount of history shown. A number of DPs get into the specifics of one or two techniques or styles they wanted to experiment with in a certain film. Where I think this DVD falls short of expectations is length. When you start to really get into it... it's over!
The films are put together extremely well showin the history of cinematography in a very entertaining manner and there are bits of useful information along the way. I just think 92 minutes are not enough. I would have also loved some additional materials (maybe Q & A with some cinematographers).

It's not what you'd call high art, but there are some highly enjoyable moments in this nicely packaged box set, featuring nine complete shows (plus ample bonus material) spread out over three discs.
Beginning as a summer replacement in 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour earned its own regular time slot that same year, running for three straight seasons and then returning in 1976 (as The Sonny & Cher Show), after the couple's divorce. The show's formula, which had already been established both onstage and on the small screen (their '69 pilot episode is among the extra features), includes plenty of music (duets, Cher's solo performances in typically outlandish Bob Mackie gowns, various guest shots); lots of shtick (consisting mostly of Cher's put-downs of the minimally talented but good-natured Sonny); and sketches and skits (ranging from lame to inspired, including a mock-opera based on All in the Family and starring Metropolitan Opera tenor Robert Merrill as a warbling Archie Bunker). Guests range from the obvious (TV stalwarts like Harvey Korman, Ruth Buzzi, and Don Knotts) to the downright weird (then-California governor Ronald Reagan). It's all fairly middlebrow, but Sonny & Cher's unpretentious, unself-conscious charm carries it; and once in a while everything congeals into one surreally entertaining package, like the '72 show featuring the Jackson 5 (led, of course, by Michael, who was then 14 and still apparently normal), who are followed to the stage by Reagan (telling jokes, sort of) and singer-actor Howard Keel, veteran of numerous movie musicals.
Bonus features include 2003 audio commentary by a nostalgic Cher, interviews with the producers, the '69 pilot, bios, discographies, and a show history. The DVD set also comes with a music-only CD, featuring live performances of "The Beat Goes On" and "I Got You Babe." --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed them more than I thought I would........2007-07-25
Good stuff. Some of the skits go on too long, but I enjoyed seeing the two of them together again. Although, it's unfortunate that the episodes are not in stereo. The musical numbers suffer because of this.
Cher's commentary on Discs 1 and 2 are about 23 minutes each, and only 8 minutes in length on Disc 3. I liked them all, even though they only totalled less than an hour in length.
Also of note, are two producer commentary tracks that are about 18 minutes each. I liked them as well.
In addition, here are the songs Sonny and Cher sing on the Barbara McNair show (17 minutes worth, and yes, the show is in color):
-"What Now My Love"
-"Danny Boy" (extra slow, boring version-sung by Cher)
-Medley: "The Beat Goes On"; "All I Really Wanna Do"; "Sing C'est La Vie"(or whatever it's called?); "Babe" (1 minute long) and then once again "The Beat Goes On".
Cue, "The Beat Goes On". Audience applauds. Fade to black.
Variety TV Show Gold.......2007-01-04
If you haven't seen a TV variety show, this is the one to see. Music, comedy and technical effects of the day made this show a "must see."
Not what I expected.......2006-12-11
Sonny and Cher were one of the best variety show duos ever to inhabit TV land, so I was saddened that this DVD collections is not really the "best" that they've done.
Don't get me wrong, there are many great clips in here... but... the producers of this DVD package have decided to include full shows (with lots of boring stuff I didn't really care about) instead of concentrating on the star, Cher!
What I would like to see is a 'best of' compilation with all the best guest-stars, musical numbers, outfits, etc...
The Ultimate Variety Show.......2006-11-30
As far as I'm concerned, these two set the bar for the slew of variety shows that followed in the 70's (though I'm well aware there were predecessors). Their opening song and banter were always entertaining. The skits were actually funny (most of the time) and who didn't love the medley portion of the show (complete with matching outfits and Sonny busting out some lame dance moves). They had really good writers, regulars (including Steve Martin and Teri Garr), great guest stars, and groovy clothes that put the Brady Bunch to shame. Little Chastity closed out the show with them, and it was just a nice little, sweet family (little did we know).
However, as an elementary aged child at the time, I had an odd crush on Sonny Bono (which to this day I will never live down with the family). I get a big kick out of watching this 70's time capsule (and call me crazy, but I still thik Sonny was a cute little guy). My only complaint is that they didn't put the show out in individual seasons. I realize it's hard to get the rights to the music, but I'd love to at least see the 1st three seasons in their entirety....I can do without the post divorce show (though the skits were funny--it didn't gel). Shame it didn't work out between these two--they worked really well together during their relationship.
"Set is Fabulous with the Exception of Final Season!".......2006-05-14
I have been wanting to buy this set for a long, long time since I grew up anxiously awaiting each and every episode of The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour AND the Cher Show. Since I hadn't seen any of the episodes (like commentator Cher) since their original run in the early seventies,I noticed some good (and bad) stuff about the show.
The first season was a dress rehearsal in many ways; the editing was sloppy and continual "laughing" breakups from the lead couple during most of the skits got to be annoying after awhile. The best season seemed to be in 1973 with the episodes where Chastity comes out at the start of each show and newsworthy skits are performed on a cartoon train. You don't see the "cue cards" in the audience as much during the opening singing and monologues and Cher's vocals and delivery are more polished than in the first season especially. Sonny still stinks however (LOL) ... can't seem to act without looking off to the side to read his lines off the cue cards which director Art Fisher should have done something about but obviously didn't for one reason or another.
My favorite segements of the show are the "Vamp number," Lady Luck (another type of "Vamp sequence" in Season 3 ), Laverne at the Laundromat. (Cher was SO FUNNY along with Terri Garr and this showed her natural inclination towards comedy and acting) I really enjoyed watching a manic Sonny share the spotlight with "the hippest woman on earth" during the musical performances with their band backing them(which the final reunion season lacked incidentally)-their medley of "Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show" and "Tamborine Man"-SO COOL!!!! On the sour side the "Opera" skits with Morgan Freeman annoyed the heck out of me as well as Sonny's Pizza. Cher's solos were very good-faves include "Half Breed," "Way of Love," and "Am I Blue?"
The first two discs were good to great especially disc 2!!
My only complaint is the chemistry and work on Disc 3 and the show they did after both their solo shows went off the air. They lacked the chemistry of the earlier shows playing it safe (of course they were divorced but they could have worked a little harder for an audience and ratings) the opening songs were only fair, the "Cutesie News" was totally stupid, liked the "War of the Sexes" with Sonny acting the sissy man he was (LOL) and Cher being very K.D. Lang....haha!! This season did not have them singing together which I really missed and Cher's solo's had her dressed to the nine's in typical Bob Mackie extravagant outfits but song selections for her were mediocre at best.
I loved Sonny and Cher-wish the CHER SHOW would come out in it's entirety as I thought she did a GREAT JOB on her own and that it was better than Sonny and Cher actually and more relaxed in many ways. She underestimated herself I think-however I would love to see all the original Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour episodes-Seasons 1 to 3 on disc-I will pass on the last show they did together. It just showed indifference and the writing and rapport was just not the same.
No offense to this great site but I would never pay almost 50 bucks for this-got it for half that somewhere else-maybe I'd pay it for for all the shows but not for nine episodes.
