Product Description

A combination of rock, jazz, blues, funk, and folk music, Spirit have collaborated with legendary musicians from each of those genres. Jimi Hendrix, Thelonius Monk and Ry Cooder are just three of their many admirers and associates. During a thirty year career which spanned from 1967 to 1997, Spirit made several critically-acclamied albums. IN CONCERT was filmed during the peak of the band's illustrious career and contains all of their hit songs as well as two previously unreleased tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Fans will find it interesting.......2007-06-08

If you liked Spirit you will like this dvd. It's an outdoor concert with no interviews or other talking heads, all music.I wish the guitar was louder in the mix, the sound seems better than you might expect but still not like state of the art.California on guitar, Cassady on drums, John Locke, oddly enough on bass since this was after the fergusan/andes departure. He does those great Mark Andes bass parts perfectly. So,not the full band you know from studio work, but RC looks pretty young and they are doing songs from Dr.Sardonicus.A couple of songs really work, like Nothing to Hide, Got a Line ..the new songs are forgettable. As I say, if you liked Spirit you'll probably like this.Too bad a dvd of the full band hasnt surfaced.

1 out of 5 stars spirit - live.......2007-04-26

A disappointment, but if you are a true Spirit fan, it is a least worth watching. The sound is horribly muffled but video is good. Instruments are hardly audible. It was great to see Randy California performing though. Only 8 tracks on the video and it would have been nice to hear more of the cuts from "12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus." The only thing good about this video is that it is one of the only videos of Spirit available. The audience response after songs is definitely canned and sounds like they are in a huge auditorium with thousands of fans instead of an outside venue although the fans were very responsive and who wouldn't be to see Spirit. Buy only if you are a true fan.

3 out of 5 stars Randy still with us in... Spirit.......2005-12-19

Almost all these bad reviews are accurate. The sound of the band is badly mixed, the audience responce is dubbed, and way to loud. BUT...just to see RANDY and Ed brings back so many memories of the shows that I was fortunate to catch ohh so long ago. I am glad I stumbled upon this DVD, had no idea it existed and outside of a couple of old videos, from some ancient TV shows I don't have any video by these guys. Once again not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

1 out of 5 stars Lo-Fi Travesty.......2005-07-16

As a long-time fan of the band Spirit, I was nearly floored to come across this D.V.D. -in a bargain bin of all places. Despite owning all the essential Spirit catalogue ( their first four albums ), I had never seen actual video of the band playing live - Spirit was an "underground" band, never a commercial success, and never appearing ( to my knowledge ), on a major television venue, or at any of the major ( filmed ) music festivals. This was the late sixties - music videos did not exist.
I could not wait to get this disc into my D.V.D. player - reading the inside packaging, my excitement was tempered by the fact that this was not the "pure" Spirit - i.e. the original band. Jay Ferguson, the lead singer had left, as had Mark Andes the bass player. John Locke, originally the keyboard player now handled the bass duties. No problem - the chance to see any incarnation of this exceptional band, after so many years of enjoying their music without any visual cues, was a totally unexpected rush.
And then I pressed play. Whoever is responsible for the release of this D.V.D., and more specifically, whoever was in charge of the audio recording should be imprisoned - trust me I'm being charitable. I "listened" to the opening song, at first thinking something was wrong with my audio system. After a quick check of my system's presets, I concluded that the sound engineer of the concert had gotten off to a very rocky start. So I waited for the audio correction which must surely be coming. Waited. Waited. But it just gets worse.
There is absolutely no balanced audio mix of any kind - the sound is muddy (to be charitable), as though, and this may be possible, the concert was audio-recorded , badly,on the Betamax video tape - without any seperate audio inputs or mixing. Frankly, today's mass market, low-end video recorders would deliver a hugely better sound than offered here.
The real frustration is this. The concert looks to be terrific. Randy California takes over the lead vocal duties and does a great job. But his guitar playing, always the highlight of the Spirit sound, is literally lost in the mix - sounding as though he's playing in an apartment two floors up. I was prepared to be disappointed by the reconfigured band - but they "look" to be in top form - which makes the audio short-comings all the more frustrating. It's great to see Cassidy pounding the skins as well as ever, and to see Randy dash off into the crowd playing a guitar solo covering two acres. You almost wish the band were bad, the horrible sound would then be a blessing. But it's the ultimate insult.
The list of technical shortcomings on this disc are many. There is fake crowd noise which is jarring and unnecessary. Beautiful guitar solos are rendered mere
ghosts in the mix. Especially sad now that we have tragically lost Randy. There is absolutely no info on this concert - where or when it was held.
My guess is this concert took place sometime in the late seventies, judging by the band's appearance. It was good to see the founding band members of a legendary group captured on video in a very, very rare live performance. Which is why I grudgingly give this video one star. Whoever released this video sat on it for twenty years, knowing they had a flawed product. Had they finally offered it with the proviso - "audio-technical limitations", this would be a justifiable commercial offering. If you are a fan of Spirit - and you should be - be forwarned. Buy this video to "watch", as an historical footnote. To buy it for the for the music, for the Spirit sound, will be frustrating beyond words.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great.............2005-01-19

Well, first off let me say that the video footage is not half bad on this DVD...but the sound is terrible...not only are the vocals often choppy and drowned out...but the instruments go in and out and sounds very uneven. In addition, somebody had the bright idea to add or amp up the crowd noise...what looks to be a crowd of maybe 200 people...often sounds like a crowd of 10 thousand people. Also - the crowd is constantly yelling and screaming over the music...and at some points louder than the music. With all these problems...I still give it two stars..and that is because #1 - Spirit was a great live band when they were around and this is the only live DVD from these guys and #2 - it's cheap...I'd be upset if I paid 20 bucks for this..but hey for 8 dollars...it's kinda cool to see them playing music and having fun. So - depsite all of the flaws - if your a hardcore fan of Spirit...this DVD may be worth a few bucks just to own. If your looking for a great concert DVD with good sound...stay away from it.
