All these Classics in a Great Box Set!.......2007-09-14
All of these films are top notch films and will be ejoyed for years and years. The format of these dvds are beautiful and the picture is just as well. I also enjoy all the extras on each dvd. I recommend this set for any family who loves these classic films, you won't be disapointed.
Not the newer State Fair.......2007-08-26
I would have purchased this item if it had contained the State Fair with Pat Boone and Bobby Darin as claimed. But as the picture on the cover clearly depicts the older version I was not interested.
All of them.......2007-06-12
I have enjoyed having them as my own and adding to my collection so I can watch them whenever I want and as often as I want but most especially with no commercials and no editing!! Thanks.
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2007-06-03
We love the effort that has been put into these DVDs. We will often set the disk to play just the "song" chapters.
We use the "sing-a-long" setting to teach our daughter to read.
If you love the music purchase this set. If you love the movies purchase this set.
Fantastic - All the great Musicals in one compact package.......2007-05-21
Not only does this set have all the classics there are bonus features (extra cd's) on each glorious movie. You cannot go wrong with this set. If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. And no worries about inappropriate materials - this is good wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

It's not what you'd call high art, but there are some highly enjoyable moments in this nicely packaged box set, featuring nine complete shows (plus ample bonus material) spread out over three discs.
Beginning as a summer replacement in 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour earned its own regular time slot that same year, running for three straight seasons and then returning in 1976 (as The Sonny & Cher Show), after the couple's divorce. The show's formula, which had already been established both onstage and on the small screen (their '69 pilot episode is among the extra features), includes plenty of music (duets, Cher's solo performances in typically outlandish Bob Mackie gowns, various guest shots); lots of shtick (consisting mostly of Cher's put-downs of the minimally talented but good-natured Sonny); and sketches and skits (ranging from lame to inspired, including a mock-opera based on All in the Family and starring Metropolitan Opera tenor Robert Merrill as a warbling Archie Bunker). Guests range from the obvious (TV stalwarts like Harvey Korman, Ruth Buzzi, and Don Knotts) to the downright weird (then-California governor Ronald Reagan). It's all fairly middlebrow, but Sonny & Cher's unpretentious, unself-conscious charm carries it; and once in a while everything congeals into one surreally entertaining package, like the '72 show featuring the Jackson 5 (led, of course, by Michael, who was then 14 and still apparently normal), who are followed to the stage by Reagan (telling jokes, sort of) and singer-actor Howard Keel, veteran of numerous movie musicals.
Bonus features include 2003 audio commentary by a nostalgic Cher, interviews with the producers, the '69 pilot, bios, discographies, and a show history. The DVD set also comes with a music-only CD, featuring live performances of "The Beat Goes On" and "I Got You Babe." --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed them more than I thought I would........2007-07-25
Good stuff. Some of the skits go on too long, but I enjoyed seeing the two of them together again. Although, it's unfortunate that the episodes are not in stereo. The musical numbers suffer because of this.
Cher's commentary on Discs 1 and 2 are about 23 minutes each, and only 8 minutes in length on Disc 3. I liked them all, even though they only totalled less than an hour in length.
Also of note, are two producer commentary tracks that are about 18 minutes each. I liked them as well.
In addition, here are the songs Sonny and Cher sing on the Barbara McNair show (17 minutes worth, and yes, the show is in color):
-"What Now My Love"
-"Danny Boy" (extra slow, boring version-sung by Cher)
-Medley: "The Beat Goes On"; "All I Really Wanna Do"; "Sing C'est La Vie"(or whatever it's called?); "Babe" (1 minute long) and then once again "The Beat Goes On".
Cue, "The Beat Goes On". Audience applauds. Fade to black.
Variety TV Show Gold.......2007-01-04
If you haven't seen a TV variety show, this is the one to see. Music, comedy and technical effects of the day made this show a "must see."
Not what I expected.......2006-12-11
Sonny and Cher were one of the best variety show duos ever to inhabit TV land, so I was saddened that this DVD collections is not really the "best" that they've done.
Don't get me wrong, there are many great clips in here... but... the producers of this DVD package have decided to include full shows (with lots of boring stuff I didn't really care about) instead of concentrating on the star, Cher!
What I would like to see is a 'best of' compilation with all the best guest-stars, musical numbers, outfits, etc...
The Ultimate Variety Show.......2006-11-30
As far as I'm concerned, these two set the bar for the slew of variety shows that followed in the 70's (though I'm well aware there were predecessors). Their opening song and banter were always entertaining. The skits were actually funny (most of the time) and who didn't love the medley portion of the show (complete with matching outfits and Sonny busting out some lame dance moves). They had really good writers, regulars (including Steve Martin and Teri Garr), great guest stars, and groovy clothes that put the Brady Bunch to shame. Little Chastity closed out the show with them, and it was just a nice little, sweet family (little did we know).
However, as an elementary aged child at the time, I had an odd crush on Sonny Bono (which to this day I will never live down with the family). I get a big kick out of watching this 70's time capsule (and call me crazy, but I still thik Sonny was a cute little guy). My only complaint is that they didn't put the show out in individual seasons. I realize it's hard to get the rights to the music, but I'd love to at least see the 1st three seasons in their entirety....I can do without the post divorce show (though the skits were funny--it didn't gel). Shame it didn't work out between these two--they worked really well together during their relationship.
"Set is Fabulous with the Exception of Final Season!".......2006-05-14
I have been wanting to buy this set for a long, long time since I grew up anxiously awaiting each and every episode of The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour AND the Cher Show. Since I hadn't seen any of the episodes (like commentator Cher) since their original run in the early seventies,I noticed some good (and bad) stuff about the show.
The first season was a dress rehearsal in many ways; the editing was sloppy and continual "laughing" breakups from the lead couple during most of the skits got to be annoying after awhile. The best season seemed to be in 1973 with the episodes where Chastity comes out at the start of each show and newsworthy skits are performed on a cartoon train. You don't see the "cue cards" in the audience as much during the opening singing and monologues and Cher's vocals and delivery are more polished than in the first season especially. Sonny still stinks however (LOL) ... can't seem to act without looking off to the side to read his lines off the cue cards which director Art Fisher should have done something about but obviously didn't for one reason or another.
My favorite segements of the show are the "Vamp number," Lady Luck (another type of "Vamp sequence" in Season 3 ), Laverne at the Laundromat. (Cher was SO FUNNY along with Terri Garr and this showed her natural inclination towards comedy and acting) I really enjoyed watching a manic Sonny share the spotlight with "the hippest woman on earth" during the musical performances with their band backing them(which the final reunion season lacked incidentally)-their medley of "Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show" and "Tamborine Man"-SO COOL!!!! On the sour side the "Opera" skits with Morgan Freeman annoyed the heck out of me as well as Sonny's Pizza. Cher's solos were very good-faves include "Half Breed," "Way of Love," and "Am I Blue?"
The first two discs were good to great especially disc 2!!
My only complaint is the chemistry and work on Disc 3 and the show they did after both their solo shows went off the air. They lacked the chemistry of the earlier shows playing it safe (of course they were divorced but they could have worked a little harder for an audience and ratings) the opening songs were only fair, the "Cutesie News" was totally stupid, liked the "War of the Sexes" with Sonny acting the sissy man he was (LOL) and Cher being very K.D. Lang....haha!! This season did not have them singing together which I really missed and Cher's solo's had her dressed to the nine's in typical Bob Mackie extravagant outfits but song selections for her were mediocre at best.
I loved Sonny and Cher-wish the CHER SHOW would come out in it's entirety as I thought she did a GREAT JOB on her own and that it was better than Sonny and Cher actually and more relaxed in many ways. She underestimated herself I think-however I would love to see all the original Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour episodes-Seasons 1 to 3 on disc-I will pass on the last show they did together. It just showed indifference and the writing and rapport was just not the same.
No offense to this great site but I would never pay almost 50 bucks for this-got it for half that somewhere else-maybe I'd pay it for for all the shows but not for nine episodes.

The Monterey International Pop Festival, the three-day event staged in 1967 that has become one of rock music's most famous and in some ways greatest concerts, gets the royal treatment with this three-disc boxed set.
Material on two of the three discs has already been widely available. Monterey Pop, D.A. Pennebaker's 79-minute, 1968 film, effectively sets the scene for the festival, which took place during the fabled "Summer of Love," when the hippie ethos was in its fullest flower, especially on the West Coast. And while not all the featured performances are thrilling, those that are--principally by the Who, Jimi Hendrix, and the amazing Ravi Shankar--are worth the price of admission, especially in the high-definition digital transfer and new 5.1 mix seen and heard here. The same can be said for Jimi Plays Monterey and Shake! Otis at Monterey, which appear in the boxed set on a separate disc and provide a much fuller look at Hendrix's and Otis Redding's incendiary sets (literally, in the former case).
Those two discs are also loaded with bonus features, including audio commentary by Pennebaker, festival producer Lou Adler (on Monterey Pop), and author Peter Guralnick (Shake!); audio-only remarks by some of the performers; photos; trailers; and other material. There's also a substantial booklet, filled with essays and photos. But it's the third disc, "The Outtake Performances," comprising some two hours of music that didn't make the final film edit, that will be of most interest to many viewers. The disc supplies a taste of some of the artists who didn't appear in Monterey Pop at all (the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Quicksilver Messenger Service), and a more complete look at some who did (the Who, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas). A nice addition to an already very impressive DVD collection. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:
IN THE TIME OF OUR TIME.......2007-09-17
Earlier this year I reviewed the documentary about the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. In that review I noted that some of the performers' works had held up very well over time and others seemed merely topical for that colorful time, or bombastic. The same sentiment expressed there can be used to evaluate the performances here. Although Monterey pre-dated Woodstock by a couple of years and was on a different coast the seemingly obligatory `filler' video of the crowds as they assembled in all their splendor could have been shot in either locale. This moreover was the Summer of Love, the last gasp effort to create an alternative lifestyle that might have a chance to survive. We know it did not but nevertheless have to salute the effort. `Oh, to be young was very heaven' to quote Wordsworth but did we really wear those outfits. Yes, we did as a measure of our awkward attempts at independence and individual expression but enough of nostalgia. The real point is that Jimi's work passes the test of time. As does The Jefferson Airplane (I might add that I made that same comment in reference to their Woodstock performance). The Mamas and Papas Otis Redding I put a question mark on. The Who definitely has not aged well. The Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar's performance is, of course, timeless. For those who were young then and for those who have only heard the myths this is definitely worth spending some time watching. The disc three outtakes is a real bonus, as well.
4.5 Star... The Summer of Love happened 40 years ago this summer.......2007-08-03
Historical value: 5 stars; DVD collection: 4 stars
Let's start with the obvious: this collection is a vast improvement over the single DVD set of the movie previously available. DVD1 brings us that movie, in its original length (80 min.), and remains a fascinating time capsule of what happened that summer weekend 40 years ago. If you have the proper sound installation at home, you will enjoy the 5.1 mix of the performances to no end. Also quite interesting is the subsequent 40 min. interview of a couple of years ago with D.A. Pennebaker (the movie director--he of Bob Dylan fame) and Lou Adler (the festival producer), who in a nice little twist "interview" each other.
DVD2 collects "Jimi Plays Monterey" and "Shake! Otis at Monterey". The Hendrix piece is for me the more enjoyable one. Interestingly, prior to the footage of Jimi's actual performance of Monterey, there is a short introducory piece on him, including footage of Hendrix at a show in London, playing the title track of "Sgt. Pepper's Loneley Heart Club Band", which literally just had come out then. Fascinating!
DVD3 brings a two hour long hosh-posh of performances that were not included in the movie, and while it is enjoyable to watch this (such as Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, and more of the Who--including the mini-suite "A Quick One", the Mamas and the Papas, and Simon & Garfunkel, just to name those, I couldn't help but think to myself "I want more"! Surely there is tons of unused footage (I believe Pennbaker says at some point that they shot more than 500 hrs of footage, but don't quote me on that). One of the strangest MIA is of course the Grateful Dead. I caught about 2 seconds of their performance in the original theatrical trailer, which is included on DVD1, but otehr than that, there is absolutely nothing. How is this possible?
I watched DVD1 with my 17 yr. old daughter. Both of our jaws were on the floor watching (re-watching for me) the legendary "Ball & Chain" performance by Janis Joplin/BBHC, among others. It was fascinating and fun pointing out artists that she had heard of by name, but never actually seen perform. In summary, "The Complete Monterey Pop Festival: Criterion Collection" is far from complete, yet a must-have for any fan of rock music, and for any historian interested in looking what "the Summer of Love" looked like. That said, I can only hope that in due course more as of yet unseen performances from the festival will be released.
Where is the rest or it?.......2007-07-31
I bought this supposed 3-disc set for my brother as a birthday present. He called me now a week later to tell me that not only is one of the discs missing, but that the other material on the discs is out of order according to the menus and box. So what the heck did I pay all this money for. Criterion is a highly respected company as far as I'm concerned... and they totally blew it. I hope at least Amazon will give me some sort of exchange!
The birthplace of 60s Rock Festivals.......2007-07-24
The eqipment used to make this movie was only fair. HOWEVER, for good reason this my favorite. The performances of The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, and more, are terrific. It is quite fun to see Mama Cass's reaction to Janis Joplin's "Ball and Chain." The ending of the festival is fantastic-- Ravi Shankar's group plays the longest and most wonderful raga, or whatever one would call it. Have you ever listened to some performer-- and the performance is so incredible that at the end you stand up applauding? The performance has literally pulled you out of your seat? Well Shankar's raga pulled everyone out of their seat-- even Micky Dolenz of the monkees. I have owned the video for 20 years or so, and it is by far the best 60s rock concert I have ever heard.-- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC AND OTHER STRANGE STORIES.
A cultural icon.......2007-07-19
The Monterey Pop Festival, held over three days in mid-June of 1967, just seems like one of those defining definitive moments of the Sixties, one of the era's cultural icons. And though at the time, the hippie countercultural movement in California had been around for a couple of years. this festival was really the first time that people from outside of California had really had any interaction with hippies, heard this type of music, and began adopting the wardrobe and lifestyle for themselves. It's also nice how the shots of the crowd juxtapose the flower children with more status-quo individuals, such as cops and traditionally-dressed people. They were able to mingle peacefully, in striking contrast to how everything seemed to erupt in flames at the end of the decade. And just like how most people outside of the area had never been exposed to the hippie culture before, so too had most people never heard a lot of the artists on the bill.
The film itself does leave a bit to be desired, since only a handful of acts get more than one song, but it's more about what the festival represented than who was included over whom, and which songs were excluded. It was meant to be shown in theatres as a feature film, not an exhaustive documentary covering every single moment of the festival. It's more like giving the viewer a representative slice of what went on, although I will agree that some of the shooting seems to have been the result of amateurishness and/or acid, such as how a good portion of "Today" consists of the back of Grace Slick's head. Probably the best performances showcased on the film are from Ravi Shankar (who has a very long, but amazing, concluding performance), Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, and Otis Redding. Bonus features include a trailer, audio commentary, interviews, and a gallery of photos and PR materials.
Disc two contains the films 'Shake! Otis at Monterey' and 'Jimi Plays Monterey,' giving us the full-length performances from these two respective artists. For both of them, Monterey really gave their careers a boost; most white audiences, in America at least, had never even heard Otis, let alone knew who he was, and while Jimi was a huge star in England, he wasn't yet very well-known in his native America. Both of them are just bursts of energy and professionalism. Prior to viewing this, I barely knew anything about Otis Redding, though after seeing his hugely energetic performance, I'm definitely interested in hearing some more of his music. And as on the first disc, the second disc also contains commentaries, interviews, and trailers.
Disc three contains about two hours worth of outtakes, some of them from artists who weren't represented in the film at all, such as The Association, Al Kooper, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Laura Nyro, The Byrds (whose performance includes a famously horrible rendition of "Hey Joe"), and Buffalo Springfield (introduced by Peter Tork). There are also additional performances from artists already represented in the film, to give a more complete view, such as Simon and Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas and The Papas (whose entire closing set is included), and The Who (who didn't really become huge in America for another two years and who were still not yet the killer live act they were to become after 1969). Unfortunately, there are also four songs by the novelty performer Tiny Tim. The space given up to his bizarre and rather annoying Dr. Demento-type music could have been much-better served giving more extra performances to a group like Buffalo Springfield or Big Brother and the Holding Company. The bands showcased on the afternoon of day two, the blues bands, also only get one number apiece. While I'm not really a fan of blues, I would have far preferred hearing some more music from them over even one song from Tiny Tim! It's also a pity how some of the bands have minimal or no surviving footage, such as The Association, who only have one song, and The Grateful Dead, whose footage is supposedly lost.
Overall, it's a great snapshot of that hopeful era in time, when people cared about peace, love, and changing the world, when music really mattered, long before the artificial vapid noise on MTV today, when all kinds of people and all kinds of bands could unite in a three-day festival without coming to blows, when there really were people who wore flowers in their hair and psychedelic clothing. Besides being a great representation of what the Sixties were all about, it's also bound to introduce the viewer to at least a few acts s/he hasn't been exposed to before and to expand one's musical horizons.

Veggie Tales? Who knew?.......2007-08-28
OK, I hate the idea of the Veggie Tales. I didn't buy any CDs, DVDs, read along books, or anything during our kids toddler years.
The silly songs are great, though. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit to it, but "I love My Lips" and "Cebu" and "My Cheeseburger" are funny, and they stick with you.
With this particular product, there's a disc that is set like a jukebox, and the interface is really a pain in the rear to work, but overall, great fun without any of the didactic tone that I think exists in some of the other presentations they have.
It's only music.
This one is so entertaining I find myself watching it with him over and over!!.......2007-08-03
I love veggie tales and they have great lessons they keep my 2 yr olds attention forever!! This one is great it is all the silly songs that larry and bob sing together!!
Very Silly Veggies.......2007-06-27
My two year old son loves these, just like his older brother did when he was his age. My son sings and dances along with all the tunes and now everyone in the house sings them too.
The only thing I didn't care for is the fact that all 4 DVD's are essentially the same. They all have the same songs on them, so every disc is kind of redundant. Luckily, he's really too young too notice!
Best purchase this year!.......2007-05-14
Not only is this my kids' favorite movie now, it is something my husband and i enjoy a ton! Well worth the money and the lessons that come with it are great too!
Hilarious DVD's.......2007-03-12
My 18 month old absolutely loves the Veggie Tales songs/videos. I would recommend this DVD to any parent who has a child that loves to dance!

I truly enjoyed each movie within the collection; however, I felt after watching each movie their plots were similiar. In addition, several phrases were used repeatedly.

One of Spanish cinema's great auteurs, Carlos Saura brought international audiences closer to the art of his country's dance than any other filmmaker, before or since. In his Flamenco TrilogyBlood Wedding, Carmen, and El amor brujoSaura merged his passion for music with his ongoing exploration of Spanish national identity. All starring and choreographed by legendary dancer Antonio Gades, the films feature thrilling physicality and electrifying cinematography and editingcolorful paeans to bodies in motion as well as to the cinema that so eloquently, and artfully, captured them.

Two decades years after Live Aid addressed the issue, lethally oppressive poverty in Africa remains a blight on the planet. Thus, in the Summer of 2005 activist Bob Geldof staged an even more ambitious series of continent-spanning concerts dedicated to raising funds and public consciousness about international debt relief. This expansive four-disc chronicles those shows in one of the most ambitious concert documents ever attempted, capturing all of the highlights (and a few complete artist sets) of concerts in London, Philadelphia, Toronto, Paris, Berlin and Moscow. Underscoring the events' sense of unity, the performances here span both generations and genres, offering veteran rock fans often muscular sets by Elton John (including a woozy take on T. Rex's "Children of the Revolution" with Baby Shambles' Pete Doherty), The Who, Sting (who sharply reprises a trio of Police favorites) and the ubiquitous Paul McCartney. But the highlight of the Jurassic set's contributions are a reunion of Roger Waters and his long-estranged Pink Floyd bandmates on a sonically flawless five-song whirl through highlights of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall; footage of their rehearsal for the show is contained on the set's equally eclectic fourth disc of bonus materials. But there are highlights here for nearly every taste, be they a fine sampling of contemporary UK and Australian rockers ( Coldplay, Jet, Razorlight and especially blistering performances by Stereophonics and Kaiser Chiefs), a little hip-hop nostalgia (a joyous Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff leading what seems half of his Philly hometown in a goofy singalong of the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" theme); showy turns by pop-meister Robbie Williams and chateuses Mariah Carey, a rousing set by Black Eyed Peas (featuring Rita and Stephen Marley on a cover of "Get Up Stand Up"). Other one-off duets include Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft doing a fine version of the latter's "Bittersweet Symphony," Stevie Wonder with Rob Thomas ("Higher Ground") and Adam Levine ("Signed Sealed Delivered"), a tender take on "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan and Josh Groban and McCartney and George Michael taking an upbeat turn via "Drive My Car," before Macca closes out the London show by leading its various participants in an obligatory singalong of "Hey Jude." Royalties from sales of the set will go to the Band Aid Trust for the relief of hunger and poverty in Africa. --Jerry McCulley

Very Good.......2007-09-10
I bought this dvd and I do not repent myself, a product of excellent quality. Congratulations Amazon.com because she was perfect in the delivery of the product.
Live.......2007-06-27
I missed the concert when it actually happened. It's nice to have it always in this package.
Simply Unforgettable.......2007-06-01
I bought this DVD for one reason only.....Pink Floyd Reunion. I wasn't dissapointed. I was however dissapointed in MTV for cutting out most of David Gilmour's guitar solo on Comfortably Numb. The only part of the Floyd performance I didn't like was Roger singing on Wish you Were Here. Dave probably should have sang everything. The highlight of the concert was Gilmour's guitar solo on Comfortably Numb. I haven't seen Dave play with that much emotion for a very long time and it gave me chills. That is why he is one of the greatest guitar players of our time. A must own for any Floyd fan.....
Great video of Pink Floyd.......2007-05-23
I basically bought this video to see the reunion of the Pink Floyd band - all members. Thought the concert was excellent in general, but particularly loved the Pink Floyd portion. If you are a fan, I highly suggest this video.

Fabulous package........2007-01-22
Quality is terrific, as are the performances. If you love quality jazz, go for it. You won't be disappointed.

the most appreciated xmas gift i've chosen in years.
An exceptional buy. thank you
Wonderful Jazz recordings.......2007-01-09
I actually bought this for my stepfatherinlaw who is a retired music instructor and bandleader. He saw many of these performers live and believes these are very representative of the vigor and energy from their performances he saw here in the US. He has nothing but praise for these. I'm eagerly awaiting him to visit again so I can watch them too.
Best collection of Jazz greats ever on DVD.......2007-01-01
To be able to see and hear the greatest names in Jazz in their prime is almost magical.Basie, Ella, Dizzy, Chet Baker, Buddy Rich The Jazz Messengers, Louis Amstrong and Thelonious Monk. Can you believe it? What a great find. As I watch and listen to each of these DVD's I am continuously impressed. The sound and reproduction from concerts and TV shows done in the 60's and 70's is terrific. The beauty of it is that we even get to see what the European TV viewer in many cases did not see, because these are from the original tapes or films BEFORE they were edited for TV . In some cases they were never even broadcast at all.
Watch the expression on Buddy Rich's face as he drives and swings his band (in color) with unbelievable energy. See Chet Baker in his youth as you probably never got to see him at that time, that is, even if you were born then. Catch a great blues singer (I was never familiar with her), Irene Reid on the Count Basie DVD. Her performance of "Backwater Blues" and "ALEXANDERS Rag Time Band" will blow you away as it did the audience at the concert in '62. Watch Thelonious Monk, as you can actually SEE as well as hear, his unusual approach to the piano as he strikes each key in his own special way, and than does his little dance as he himself is completly captivated by the music. I guess I could go on and on about how great each performance is, but you will discover that for yourself when you listen to this beautiful collection of DVD's. Even if you don't go for the whole collection, you got to find something here that you find alluring enough to own.
Just a word to the people that discovered and put this collection together; David Peck,Phillip Gallaway, Mika Peck, and TDK records Thank you ever so much.
For the older fans that take a trip in time and see their favorites perform again just as if we are there "one more time" as Count Basie would say, or to the new, or younger jazz fan that may see and listen to these artists for the first time. We are forever gratefull.
Keep these wonderfull DVD's rolling out of them vaults. I really look forward to the next batch of releases, especially the Charles Mingus and Roland Kirk DVD's. What a blast they will be.

We'll let others speak for us:
"The release of Jazz Icons(tm) is like the unearthing of a musical time capsule--an audio-visual treasure trove of the music that changed the world. From Big Band and Bebop to Dixieland and Cool, it's all here and it all swings. These jazz legends, from Dizzy and Count to Louis and Ella, are the Bachs and Beethovens of our generation. From an educational standpoint this series is a gift to our culture. I'm honored to be a featured part of it, but I'm more thrilled just to sit down and watch it with my grandkids."
--Quincy Jones
"Louis Armstrong's sound transcends time and style. This DVD captures that intangible power and allows us to gaze upon it in wonder."
--Wynton Marsalis
"Amazing! To see the Art Blakey band playing "Moanin'" a month after I recorded them--it's like watching my own birth."
--Rudy Van Gelder
(engineer of the original Moanin' LP)
"These nine historic DVDs are among the most important visual/aural documents to be mined from the ever-yielding, seemingly hidden jazz treasury. Now, most importantly, they are available to the entire world."
--Ira Gitler, co-author,
The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz (Oxford)
"Considering the almost alarming proliferation of jazz DVDs on the market today, and their extremely variable quality, it is good to know that Reelin' In The Years can be trusted to bring viewers nothing but the best--in content and presentation."
--Dan Morgenstern, Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University; author, Living With Jazz (Pantheon Books)
"The first nine releases hold many delights -- a magnificent Ella Fitzgerald, a crisp Quincy Jones big band -- but none more thrilling than a concert by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in Brussels in 1958."

11 Operas Over 30 Hours of Great Music!.......2007-08-05
Opus Arte presents outstanding television archive recordings of performances from the Teatro alla Scala beautifully packaged as a high quality box set, each title complete with an informative booklet.
The La Scala Collection brings together works from some of the best loved composers. Donizetti, Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Verdi and Pergolesi. Renowned conductors Riccardo Muti, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Lorin Maazel and Stefano Ranzani lead the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala in these magnificent productions. These splendid performances feature some of the most famous opera singers in the world including Thomas Allen, Placido Domingo, Renato Bruson, Daniela Dessi, Alessandro Corbelli, Giorgio Zancanaro, Chris Merritt, Cheryl Studer and Sara Mingardo. A collection no opera lover should be without. The titles are:
Mozart: Don Giovanni
Riccardo Muti conducts a great cast, with Thomas Allen in the title role of the great seducer, in the 1987 La Scala recording of Mozart and Da Ponte's tale of lust and subversion.
Rossini: Guglielmo Tell
Riccardo Muti conducts a fine cast led by Giorgio Zancanaro in the title role of Rossini's towering and opulent last opera with the Corps de Ballet, Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala.
Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor
Donizetti's great tragedy is his undisputed masterpiece of melancholic romanticism, with the doomed love between Lucia and Edgardo retold from Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The 1992 production heightens the story's powerful libretto with its dramatic visual design and first class musical performances.
Puccini: La Fanciulla del West
Lorin Maazel conducts this cast in Jonathan Miller's 1991 production of the compelling and evocative opera, which Puccini himself considered his best work.
Pergolesi: Lo frate nnamorato
Rediscovered by conductor Riccardo Muti, this forgotten opera was filmed in the 1989 period production. A rare recording of Pergolesi's second opera.
Mozart: Cosi fan tutte
Daniela Dessì and Delores Ziegler lead the cast in Mozart's brilliant and witty opera as the two women whose faithfulness in the face of romantic love is ruthlessly tested in Da Ponte's comic tale. Mozart lavishes some of the finest music ever written on the unfolding story of the two sisters chaotic love affairs with their two Italian army officers.
Verdi: I due Foscari
Renato Bruson takes the role of the Venetian Doge Francesco Foscari in Verdi's dark, three act tragedy based on a drama by Lord Byron set in 15th century Venice, Gianandrea Gavazzeni directs the 1988 La Scala production of a work that is hailed among the best of Verdi's early operas, and that led him to a career of operatic immortality.
Rossini: La donna del lago
Director Werner Herzog and conductor Riccardo Muti combine with the finest of casts to lavish Rossini's rarely performed Neapolitan masterpiece, set in feudal sixteenth century Scotland, with the genius it deserves. June Anderson is an outstanding Elena (the Lady of the Lake) in the 1992 production of the melodrama based on Sir Walter Scott's poem.
Verdi: Attila
Riccardo Muti conducts a fine cast in the powerful and atmospheric 1991 production of Verdi's ninth opera, whose story of the heroic tussle between Ezio, a Roman general, and Attila, the Nordic invader, was written for the 1846 Teatro la Fenice season and premiered there to huge acclaim.
Cilea: Adrianna Lecouvreur
Cilea's four act opera of jealousy and tangled love, first performed in Milan in 1902, is based on the true story of Adriana Lecouvreur, an 18th Century actress at the Comedie Française, whose rival for the love of Maurizio, Count of Saxony, is the married Principessa die Bouillon.
This was a wonderful set that I got from Amazon. When you break it down you are only paying around $6.50 per opera dvd. I love to go to the opera just like any other opera fan, but you can pay anywhere from $40 to $80 for one viewing. For $70 you can watch these over and over again and enjoy them just as you would if you saw them live in the theatre.
i love opera.......2007-08-03
although i have not viewed all the operas in the collection, those that i have seen are excellent.i am sure when i have viewed the rest i will feel the same way.
A great buy.......2007-07-28
Not everything here is the greatest, but there's enough good stuff that at the price it's a great buy. The productions are basically television relays from La Scala productions of the 80s, so the visual quality isn't exactly hi-def, and sometimes a bit muddy and rough (all the operas but one are on a single disk, so I'm sure the bit-rate isn't very high), and the audio is good but not spectacular. I haven't watched everything, but I've sampled all the operas, and every one looks like it has something interesting in terms of production or performance. The productions are very straightforward and sometimes grand and impressive in a traditional way. No nutso Euro-trash modernist reinterpretations here! Only the William Tell is anything but straightforward: it uses huge photo back-projections of scenes from the Swiss Alps, and isn't ridiculous. The Muti Cosi fan tutte and Don Giovanni are both excellent, as is the Maazel Fanciulla del West. The casts are mostly strong, if not always overwhelmingly good. Some terrific performances, some good ones, and some that are just so-so - basically what you could hear at the Metropolitan or another major international opera house, rather than the attempts at all-world casting you get (or used to get) in studio recordings. Apart from all that, maybe the biggest attraction is the relative rarity of the operas themselves: Verdi's Attila (early), I Due Foscari (early), and I Vespri Siciliani (unusual), Rossini's mammoth William Tell (the only 2-disker), Cilea's not-that-often-encountered verismo opera Adriana Lecouvreur, and, rarest of all, Pergolesi's Lo Frate 'Nnamorato, set in Naples and mostly sung in Neapolitan dialect, and a delightful production! Most of the operas are conducted by Riccardo Muti, but there are one or two by older La Scala regulars like Gianandrea Gavazzeni. For less than ten bucks an opera, what can you lose?
Spectacular Opera From La Scala.......2007-01-09
Not only are the performances top-notch, but the production values exceed what one has grown to expect from operas on DVD. Each opera in this collection conveys the feeling (almost) of sitting in the audience.
This collection was recommended by a friend who works in opera. He not only is a talented producer, but is very close with his euros. I was about to order an opera DVD which cost most of what I paid for this entire set!
First Class Opera at a bargain basement price.
