Pure joy from start to finish!.......2007-09-17
I have several of Andre Rieu's DVDs and while most of them are enjoyable, this one is the best so far, in my opinion. Unlike one of your previous reviewers, I thought the Harlem Gospel Choir was great and suited a concert recorded in New York at Radio City Music Hall very well. I also like to see the audience and all the featured soloists so I enjoyed the way it was filmed. You almost feel that you are there! The repertoire was a 10 ... all among my favourite pieces and well chosen to capture many moods. Everything was played beautifully with contagious enthusiasm. This is definitely a keeper. You can't help but feel great after playing it.
Very Disappointing.......2007-09-10
I saw part of the PBS broadcast and I ordered this DVD even though I had to wait several weeks for it. I was very disappointed. I enjoy watching and lisenting to Andre and his orchestra, not watching them take a back seat to the performers, soloists, etc. They (the singers and choirs)are all very talented, but I wanted to see and experience Andre. I have several of his earlier DVD's that do not rely on outside talents, and I enjoy them so much more. Andre, go back to your roots!
Andre Rieu in New York 2006.......2007-09-10
I have almost everything Andre Rieu has and this was just passable. The Harlem folks are the ones that messed it up. Their music has no business being with Andre Rieu, who has class. I bought the DVD and am happy that I can just jump to the next track to avoid the Harlem music (if that is what you call music). Would I buy it again, well yes, but still with the opportunity to jump past some of the tracks. And Andre seemed to be "out of place here" and I think he was glad it was over. And there was only one song played by the little boy, disappointing.

I don't know how Clayton G. Anderson's panties got in such a twist! (The one star review!) I have to whole heartedly DISagree with his review! If you are an Andre Rieu fan, this DVD is another excellent showing by Mr. Rieu. What Clayton must not understand is how Andre loves not only beautiful music but also bringing it to the masses! To me the real show is seeing how much he enjoys bringing entertainment to his audiences!
I am an upbeat kind of person. I enjoy watching people have a good time. When you watch this DVD enjoy how much, not only the audience or Andre, but his orchestra enjoys the evening.
This is another beautiful show. I have all of them and enjoy them over and over again! (I really love Carla! LMAO)
Andre Rieu, The Music Man.......2007-08-11
Taped in July 2006 at the Radio City Music Hall, this exuberant concert starts with a grand entrance set to "76 Trombones." The glittering show is occasionally interspersed with wonderful scenes of New York in Summer, with its amazing diversity and energy, and the "Godfather Theme" includes some sunny footage from Italy. The superb musicianship of Rieu (who now plays a 1732 Stradivarius), along with his unique and terrific Johann Strauss Orchestra and Chorus, always keep a light heart and a touch of humor while they perform pop and classical favorites. Guest artists are the Harlem Gospel Choir and 5 year old child prodigy Akim Camara.
The old time razzle dazzle aura of the Radio City Music Hall is a perfect setting for Rieu, who has perfected the fine art of schmaltz down to the last note, and never fails to delight us with his entertaining offerings. The concert includes the following numbers:

The video was OKAY. My daughter wasn't interested or amused after the first few minutes. If your'e really looking for a great sing and dance vidoes to keep your infant/toddler excited try The Lauri Berkner Band.

I just love this band! My 2 1/2 year old daughter and I dance around and sing to this dvd every day. I love that they use instruments you don't hear every day. I love that their music is upbeat and happy and very eclectic. I love that this video is simple and not a huge production but mostly I love that these people seem to really enjoy making music together. That energy reaches out and grabs you. We can't wait until Dan Zanes and Friends tour our town!

Unfortunatley I bought this for my 2 yr old nephew, and he does not like it at all. My sister said he walked away from it 1/2 way thru a song, she said it was too hippyish . I heard this guy Dan Zanes was great. Still have not listened to it myself. Maybe my nephew is just to active for this.

The concert and videos are not visually appealing for the young ones. The image quality and footage of concert is a VERY small step above amateur. If your child is a fan of the colorful Dan Zanes videos on TV, this video is not the same.

My 2 1/2 yr. old loves to dance around to this video and I enjoy watching it with her. It's a little bit hip (so you don't feel like you are watching Barney) but still kid friendly.

Why YOU need to own this dvd..........2007-07-23
If you want to see what a rock legend looks like, it is imperative that you watch this, possibly more than once.
A true rock legend is someone who actually transcends the genre. This DVD captures a man in his element, in his time, doing what he was put on this earth to do, without shame and without remorse. To put it simply, he plays and sings every note as if it were his last. He seizes the day and lays bare his passions. This is more than a rock concert, it is a lesson on how to live your life.
I'm not your typical gushing fan. I'm not going to say "All Hail Bruce Spingsteen, he's my hero!". Frankly, I don't know the man and I don't believe in hero-worship. But what I do know is that he understands his job and he does it very, very well. He knows how to touch people, how to lift their spirits and get them to aspire to something better. He speaks from his heart. His show is, in many ways, a religious experience-with ONE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION. It is all-inclusive. It's all there for the asking. You don't have to be a certain type of person, or subscribe to a particular set of beliefs in order to be a part of this. All you have to do is say "Yes, my heart is open. I want to be happy.". And, of course, you have to buy a ticket. There's no mission without margin, after all.
Bruce transcends the rock 'n' roll genre because he refuses to be defined by it. He acknowledges that he is an entertainer, but yet he continues to approach his work in earnest, with a certain reverence that makes it more important than what it otherwise would be. He understands that, above all, music is a means of communication. It is a way to connect with your fellow man and find common ground. He's not isolating himself from the audience. He's not talking about things that others can't understand. He's not trying to be vague and inscrutable. He's an idealist, a humanist, and he is using his medium to push us all to higher ground.
This DVD is about the church of the common man. And I say "Amen, my brothers and sisters. Throw off your shackles and be free!!!". Sing it loud and sing it proud Bruce. This DVD is what rock 'n' roll was meant to be. It's emotional, it's raw, it's honest. After watching this show I can honestly say that there is a force in the universe that moves us from within, and one of it's manifestations is Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band. The only question that remains is "Will you testify?".

Everytime I play this DVD, I feel I am in the audience dancing around like a whirligig! What a privilege it would have been to be in the audience. Bruce was at the top of his form, the audience was stoked. What a joy to have this, especially after I taped it off HBO when it was first aired. If you love the Boss and the E Street Band, this DVD is for you. Buy it. It is history!

Fifty years from now, after the Springsteen songbook has been fully mined, some singer/musician will do some research and discover that not only was Bruce Springsteen the most prolific songwriter of the 20th century, but also its most charismatic performer.
Such will be the legacy of Springsteen. He will be acknowledged as the greatest of all American songwriters of the 20th century, bar none.
It is hard to imagine the E Street Band being in finer form than as recorded at these 2000 Madison Square Garden performances.
I consider myself extremely fortunate in that I was unfamiliar with the songs "Youngstown" and "Land of Hope and Dreams", which are for me the highlights of this set. Quite frankly, there is nothing that is not magnificent on this set. It ranges from the merely phenomenal to the extra-galactic.
"Land of Hope and Dreams" is a song that belongs to the ages.
It strikes me as noteworthy that these performances preceded 9/11, and thus "The Rising".
Bruce is an American icon. He is fundamentally that most precious of things: A Good Man. He is also a patriot who loves his America, the land of hope and dreams.
And then came 9/11. And Bush's war. And Abu Ghraib. And the destruction of America's reputation among it's European allies that is saved from fascism half a century ago.
This concert(s) mark a point in time. A true "end of innocence".
Other highlights:
You have to see the opening sequence of "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" to believe it.

But really, it's all great.
At this point in time, the ESB is nothing short of magnificent. I did not fully appreciate their abilities until seeing this.

Nils guitar playing? Pat Methany would sit up and take notice of his solo on "Youngstown."
I could go on. Just order the damn thing now. It will become a prized possession, trust me.

This concert, shot for HBO, was just a phenominal concert. Great to see Little Steven back with the band, even though his voice makes my head hurt. Amazon got me the video very quickly, the prompt service I've come to expect to Amazon and most of their affiliates. Thanks Amazon, I'm well pleased again!

On a Big Screen TV It's Almost Like You Are Right There.......2007-08-09
I like live performances in small venues and this DVD captured it. I found it interesting though that the crowd in London seemed so reserved. I was screaming and I was just watching the DVD. The American crowd on the Live CD in NY was more of what I'm used to.
If you are a fan of Corraine then this a great thing to have. Just remember to watch the DVD on a big screen.

Corinne Bailey Rae should record all her albums live. It gives off a vibe of the cool Jazz Singer in front of the cafe. Flawless, natural, soulful voice. The positive and upbeat version of Billie Holliday.

This CD/DVD set is fantastic. CBR is simply wonderful. I've seen her live and she is just a good live as the DVD indicates. I can't wait for her next recording. Her voice and band are so enjoyable. Favorite performance on the DVD: Enchantment. I love watching it over and over again. The background segment with the interview of CBR is really nice.

I saw Corinne Bailey Rae the other night when she opened for John Legend and even though I liked her music prior to seeing her I was extremely impressed by the live set. She sang even better live then she does on the cd and the songs came to life right before my eyes. I actually was feeling the songs like I imagined she was feeling them when she was singing them. The live version of "Seasons change" was incredible. Im officially a fan and I cant wait until I see her again. Until then this live album will have to do. If she comes to your town, go and see her, you will NOT be disappointed.

I was introduced to Corinne Bailey Rae's music by a friend of mine recently. It's not often you listen to an artist for the first time and feel you've known them for a very long time. Miss Rae is one of those artists for me. She puts her heart and soul into every song she sings.
I purchased Live In London & New York the first day it was available and quite frankly will probably wear my DVD player out in short order.
The DVD has 2 sound tracks. Dolby 5.1 and stereo. Needless to say the 5.1 audio is excellent. I haven't tryed the stereo track yet.
The video production is superb. I am not a fan of some of the producers who feel they must change scenes every 1/2 second or so along with more views of the audience than of the performer. This DVD has none of that. It's as if each scene change was thought out before hand choosing just the right angle to show. There are many close-ups of Miss Rae and the excellent lighting brings out her beautiful eyes and sincere smile. She has a full compliment of musicians backing her up. I was very impressed with "Since I've been Loving You" written by Led Zeppelin.
I also enjoyed the documentary which gives you an insight into what inspired each song that Miss Rae wrote. The 4 music videos are an added bonus which I thoroughly enjoyed not to mention the live CD recorded in New York.
All in all you can't go wrong making this purchase.

Despite symptoms of sequelitis, Austin Powers in Goldmember is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike Myers--returning here as randy Brit spy Austin, his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain Goldmember--thrives by favoring comedic chaos over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to rescue his father, gamely played by Michael Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely adrift with old and new characters, including Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy Cleopatra. Not as good as the first two........2007-08-26
I'm a fan of the Austin Powers series. The jokes are over the top, the characters are hilarious, what's not to like? So when Austin Powers in Goldmember came out, I just had to watch it. As you can tell from my 3 star rating, I was not that impressed.
At the time this movie came out, I was a fan of Beyonce's so that added to my excitement. Regardless of how much I liked Beyonce, I just couldn't disregard the fact that her presence in the film almost completely ruined it. The fakeness, the bad acting-it almost made me uncomfortable to watch the scenes that she was in.
Further, the jokes just weren't that great. The humor in the two previous movies had changed dramatically in Goldmember. The jokes in Goldmember are more obvious and silly. I even remember when I first watched this in the theatres, there were hardly any laughs coming from the audience. And the usually funny characters lack their typical "punch". The jokes are similar to the ones in the first two movies and they get old rather quickly. The new character, Goldmember, is nothing special. If I had to come up with an adjective to describe him it would be "gross".
The movie moves along steadily although it seems that the scenes were just thrown together. If you're a fan of the first two films in the Austin Powers series and you feel as though you must watch this one, it's important to know that it's entertaining in its own way but it's simply not good enough.

i think there will never be an unfunny or boring Austin Powers. the writers are good. but I'm the kind of person that usually only likes the first movie. the first austin powers was the best! liz hurley was beautiful in it, and the fembots. i didn't like the 2nd one b/c Heather Graham did not look attractive, and it seemed the dullest of all 3. i wanted to watch this b/c i'm a fan of Beyonce and think she is beautiful. unfortunately it is she that brings the movie down. austin powers is suppposed to be about 2 elements: Austin and his essential accompanying humor and the hot babe who supports him. i feel that Beyonce was not a good supporting actress. she is not a good actress in this and thus weakens the movie. she seems artificial and overacts. she is not natural; like she knows the camera is on her and this is a movie e.t.c. maybe she needed time to practice more and maybe it wasn't the right movie for her b/c in Dreamgirls she was awesome; her acting was really good and believable in that. i think she needed time b/c i do think they essentially chose her for this movie b/c of her star power and the fanbase she'd bring. but at least she does look hot in it! but i did like the ending of it. i think she wasn't so bad at the end. my verdict is that this is still watchable and shows off hot beyonce. Yeah baby!

Not a bad movie at all. Pretty funny, but not as funny as Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Should've given more dialog to Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles from Destiny's Child); instead, she's just the next girlfriend for Austin, and not a more fleshed-out character, like Heather Graham or Elizabeth Hurley before her.
The character of Goldmember, while not in the film a lot, could've been cut down a bit more. He isn't particlularly interesting. He's not as evil as Dr. Evil, and not as disgusting as Fat [...], and comes off as a washed out amalgam of the two.
Fred Savage, from TV's "The Wonder Years," is good in his two scenes as "the Mole." It's Dr. Evil, as usual, who steals the show, however. And it's a pretty good show.

F.Y.I.: While in the movie we hear ELO's "Evil Woman," King Floyd's funk classic "Groove Me," and Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea," Darin's song is not on the soundtrack, and absolutely awful cover versions of the first two make the album. Avoid this soundtrack at all costs!

When George Carlin is asked which HBO concert is his favorite, his answer is always, "Jammin' In New York." The reasons are several: It was his first HBO show done live; it was the first he had done in his hometown, New York City; and it was the largest audience he had ever worked before: 6,500.
But Carlin says it also represented a newfound sophistication in his writing. "It was the first time I had done truly extended pieces consisting of separate sections all flowing together. It was a big leap for me."

One of my favorite Carlin DVD.......2006-08-30
This is one of my favorite Carlin DVD! I think if you like George Carlin and think he's funny, you should buy this DVD and you'll realize he's very very funny and a pure genious! I also suggest you pick up "Life is worth losing" Carlin's next DVD soon to be released. I don't get offended about anything Carlin says but in that one i got offended with like 2 things he said. Then he explained more and i just realized how stupid i was. Carlin is always making you step back as a human being to look at yourself and people as a whole. Look at how ignorant we sometimes act but at the same time talking about all the little things that we all do but never talk about. BUY THIS DVD i have 11 george carlin HBO specials and i never will regret paying a penny for them.

This video is a perfect example as to why George Carling is known as such a great comedian. His opinions reflect your opinions you're yo scared to share. His acts are funny, as well as very intelligent. Every word he says we can relate to. When he performs, you know he is passionate in it. I'd reccomend this to evryone.

If you want to laugh in hysterics and relate to ordinary every day life, you will want to watch this video. Carlin does it again, as he describes words and phrases in relation to air travel and more. He is one of the best comedians of over two decades and after seeing Jammin' In New York (1992) for the first time, I do not at all regret this purchase. I have been searching for another Carlin video that is on the same level as this one, but I have yet to find it. I think that this is one of his greatest performances, he seems to be having fun on stage, and he just lets loose with his sarcasm and wit. I don't think anyone can be disappointed with this one.

Billy Connolly: Live in New York is a poor recording of his comedic talent both artistically and professionally. The stage set looks drab and poorly lit, much like an amateur would do on his first chance of recording finger puppets for a kindergarten class. The comedian's appearance matches that of the set, leaving his grey hair standing out as if he just stepped out of the shower. His comedy material seems impromptu, with digressions that never establishes "The Roll" in any of his comedy bits, stories or subjects, throughout his comedy act. To be frank, I fell asleep 3/4 of the way through the DVD and decided to use the DVD as a beverage coaster instead.
I originally purchased the DVD based upon samples of his material I've heard from Satellite Radio, and I believe that there are far better recordings of this artist besides this DVD title.

Saturday Night Live: The Best of Tracy Morgan.......2006-05-31
I will reiterate myself if you are looking for a steak dinner of Tracy Morgan, or a time warp to those days when saturday night meant an hour hanging out with Tracy never knowing what he was going to add you will not find it on this DVD. I might suggest this DVD in conjunction with his stand up, but still I am not sure there is any going back.
If you are already reading these review I doubt I have to say that Tracy Morgan is brilliantly funny. I will say that extra features typically are something I watch once and say yeah well it was good but I'll probably never watch that again. This is a rare exception this DVD includes his tryout for SNL which realistically funny and screams New York funny. Oh my god, he's funny he just keeps saying randomly aside Gooo get my moms! like the kid who was trying to act up and be wise and ends up really hurting himself.
The DVD includes: Brian Fellows w/ the Rock and Jimmy Fallon, Astronaught Jones with Nelly, Pimp Chat, Osama Bin Laden is a house negro with Chis Mathews, radio in my ear hobo and a personal favorite Aunt Jamima's husband selling malt liquer "Sell what you know!"
This is an apetizer when can we get the full seven course dinner I don't know.

Since I have owned the audio cassette of Psychoderelict for many years I was looking forward to this DVD with the extra Who songs surrounding it. The live performance sparkles with Pete Townshend brilliance even more than the original except in two instances. Unfortunately, Pete's voice shows a lot of wear and tear and his guitar work, though still excellent, is mixed at such a low volume as to be sometimes inaudible. Still, Pete Townshend on a bad day is still worth at least four stars. Don't expect a lot from the Who numbers; Pschoderelict Live is a terrific performance by a rock legend.

Stunning Live DVD of Psychoderelict & Classic Townshend Tunes.......2007-01-20
Although I'm a huge fan of Pete Townshend and his work with The Who, I was quite skeptical about this release. I hadn't seen this performance before because I didn't like Psychoderelict the studio release. I assumed it would be similarly boring live. Fortunately, I was surprised and proven wrong by this performance on DVD. Townshend is in great form and very upbeat throughout this marathon 2 and a half hour performance! The songs performed are more powerful, make much more sense and are more compelling than they were on the studio album. This is an excellent live performance encompassing music, video, technology & theater. Don't be afraid of Psychoderelict! You may find that it's extremely fresh sounding in 2007 and more innovative that much of what Townshend's contemporaries have done lately. This may not resound with the critics or fans of such artists, but when you see and listen to this excellent performance of Psychoderelict, you cannot help but get sucked into the music, the story and the visuals. The compositional value stands as strong as the production values. I really like the song selection outside of Psychoderelict as well. Songs like Let My Love Open The Door, Eminence Front, A Little is Enough & Face The Face really represent Townshend outside the Who well. I recommend this video to anyone who enjoys Tommy, Lifehouse/Who's Next, Quadrophenia or any other great rock theater!
Wonderful Modern Rock Orchestration.......2007-01-09
Pete Townshend, after the failed Life House project, gave us Tommmy and Quadrophenia, two of our modern orchestrated rock masterpieces. Psychoderelict, although not in league with the latter two, is a fantastic project driven by Townshend's masterful acoustic guitar and a tight backup band. Those unaware of Life House, which has appeared in bits and pieces throughout the Who's various works (most notably on 1973's Who's Next), now comes to fruition in Psychoderelict, a driving rock play which utilizes some of the same multimedia effects as the Tommy and Quadrophenia touring shows. Although Townshend, in the accompanying interview, denies it is autobiographical (but admits the lead character is partly based upon his own career), Psychoderelict gives hard driving insight into the career of a fading rock star who seeks, at the end, to use his hard-won career knowledge to the greater good. Nothing less could be expected of a true virtuoso such as Townshend.

Yes my friends, I was one of the lucky ones who saw this show on the West Coast, at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles California. I agree that the music from the CD was performed better live, the story seemed to come to life performed right before our eyes. Pete's an amazing performer, storyteller, musician, you name it. This was a fantastic show, and the extra songs played after Psycoderelict was completed was a real treat. Actually "Face The Face" blew the roof off The Wiltern. Those of us who caught this show are so lucky to see it again, and show others what a Wonderful show this was. Thank you Pete!

The Blind Boys of Alabama have spread the spirit and energy of pure soul gospel music for over 60 years, ever since the first version of the group formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. Today, founding members Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter and George Scott joined by more recent arrivals Joey Williams, Ricky McKinnie, Bobby Butler, and Tracy Pierce are on a mission to expand the audience for traditional soul-gospel singing while incorporating contemporary songs and innovative arrangements into their hallowed style.
In December 2003, the band came to New York City to perform a special holiday concert at the famed Beacon Theater with Aaron Neville, John Medeski, Duke Robillard, Chrissie Hynde, Mavis Staples, Michael Franti (Spearhead), Robert Randolph (Sacred Steel player), and Charlie Musselwhite (Blues harmonica icon). This show aired on PBS in December 2004 as part of their pledge drive with the individual band members appearing in pledge breaks.

A gospel Christmas with Joy to the World, from The Blind Boys of Alabama........2006-01-06
It is a wonderful suprise to hear for the first time a group whose core members have been performing together for over 60 years. The Blind Boys of Alabama's current tour brought them to my attention, though I was unable to attend their Christmas concert at Disney Hall. So I decided to check out their Christmas 2003 DVD, "Go Tell It On The Mountain, Live In New York". Oh my God! With various special guest accompaniment on about half these gospel and Christmas songs, they literally blow the roof off the Beacon Theatre, and before the concert reaches the halfway point almost everyone is on their feet, jumping up and down. For me the high point in a concert that was chock full of them had to be the collaboration with Mavis Staples on Nobody's Fault But Mine, and Born In Bethlehem. No doubt that the Blind Boys' Grammy Award winning 2003 studio CD of the same name that just preceeded this live concert DVD may be more technically perfect, but it's the rough edges of these live performances as they work themselves out that spice up the songs, and they rock! The spiritual magic that infuses their music is never in doubt, and the ecstatic crowd lets it wash over them like a waterfall.
