Ummm....Alright, I guess...The Haunted is still great!.......2004-11-10
4 stars if your a haunted fan.......2003-05-16
Great band but not the best way to showcase their talent.......2003-04-26
It contains two 1-hour shows (around 55 minutes each) and a 25 minutes
"making of...one kill wonder". As added bonus it also
contains 2 songs from the upcoming album (1 is audio only).
First, let's review the japanese show: The quality of the image
is below tv standard (almost bootleg) and the sound is uneven.
The show is mixed with the "making of" between every few songs,
very annoying and unnecessary when you have the option from the
main menu to watch the entire 25 minutes "making of".
When the lights are down during the songs you can almost see the
low quality of the recording, it looks like you're watching a
web broadcast (very grainy and a few transparent shadows). It is
surprising to read in the booklet that both shows were recorded
by professionnals! (i hope they got their money back...)
Second the Malmo, Sweden 2001 show: The difference between the
footage from Japan and this show is like comparing night and day.
The jump in quality and sound is incredible with much better
production value. This show is recorded with plenty of lights so
you won't see the blackness of the japan show here. The singer
speaks to the crowd in-between songs so you might understand
what he's talking about if you speak Swedish.
The Malmo, Sweden show is a complete show, non-interrupted like
the Japanese show (so you don't have to skip anything).
Now for the 25 minute "making of...one kill wonder" although too
short is very informative and for fans of Fredrik Nordstrom (of
Fredman studios, well-known metal producer) you get to see the
recording facilities. It contains interviews with all the band
members, Fredrik Nordstrom and the guy who makes special effects
on their albums (just a guy they hire for that purpose only).
So why the low score you may wonder, well i have to take off one
point for the sound of the Japan show which could be better.
I also have to take one point off for that show's quality which
is almost bootleg vhs quality, very disapointing!.
I also have to take one point for the way the dvd is presented.
How can they expect us to watch the "bonus features"(the "making
of...one kill wonder") when the same footage is included in the
Japanese show. I must also mention that when they show the Earache logo
at the beginning of the dvd it looks like it was taken fom a vhs tape, very 80's looking!
If you're looking for any kind of credits on this dvd then forget
about it. Who filmed what, who's the producer, camera guys and
all that stuff is nowhere to be found here. If you're a new fan
and you want to know who the band members are you will only find
this info in the "making of", i would bet Earache records didn't
spend thousands of dollars on the production of this dvd.
If you're a fan of the Haunted buy it, but make sure you don't
pay more ... for it. I haven't seen any other dvd from
Earache records and one can only hope that their quality-control
didn't fly out the window.
As a first time buyer of an Earache dvd it left a bad taste in my mouth and the only thing saving
this piece of plastic is the Sweden show and the band members performances.
Thanks for reading,
Mario
