Description
Tommy Igoes Groove Essentials DVD is based on the definitive collection of contemporary Rock, Jazz, R&B/Funk and World/Ethnic drumming styles contained in the Groove Essentials poster that Igoe and Vic Firth developed last year, the enhanced DVD features drum artist, teacher and author Tommy Igoe who demonstrates, explains and performs nearly four-dozen of todays most popular drum patterns. According to Igoe, mastering these essential grooves will greatly expand any drummers knowledge and versatility while giving them the confidence and ability to perform in virtually any musical situation. As a special bonus, the DVD package includes a free Groove Essentials poster.

Best I Own.......2007-06-25
Finally, a drum instruction video that actually teaches you to play something useful on the drums! I own the Steve Smith video and Neil Peart Work in Progress, both very enjoyable and informative, but nothing for my beginning level of drumming. I can copy their rhythms, but Tommy shows how to build grooves from the ground up and lets you play along at 2 tempos. This has been great in helping me learn independence, many styles of rhythms, and it's fun to watch. He's an excellent and encouraging instructor and this video (with poster of the grooves tabbed out) is worth every penny.
Great Instruction - Annoying Production.......2007-04-25
There is a lot to like about the drumming and instruction on this video. I found Mr. Igoe to be an articulate and likable instructor that conveys a passion for playing.
Unfortunately there is a lot to hate about the way it was produced. The editing is incredibly annoying. While he is talking to you they pace edits about every 30 seconds, they use orthogonal angles, constant zooms, black and white shots, aged film effects etc. All that does is serve to annoy and distract you from what is being said. I think the editor just got a bunch of new cameras and post-production toys and had to try them all out. 1 Star for the production, 5 Stars for the instructor.
A Truly Essential Work.......2007-04-17
Amazingly, it's difficult to find a drum instruction method based on just grooving; which, interestingly, is the point in playing the drum set almost all of the time. Igoe actually does what hardly any other author does for the drum set; he teaches one how to groove. Not only that, but this is the most fun program I've ever heard. When you take his Dvd lessons and apply them to the songs from the mp3s, it's just so much fun--it's hard to even explain. I've stayed up until 4 am playing to these songs: trying out different groove variations, fills, and solos, and I don't feel like I'm working--I feel like I'm having fun and don't want to go to bed. Best Dvd/book ever written for the set!
Good value for money for instructional entertainment.......2007-03-29
To be honest, I never heard of Tommy Igoe before purchasing the "Groove Essentials" DVD. I purchased this DVD because of the voluminous contentent (almost 4 hrs), and the variety of the grooves. Tommy is certainly enjoying himself, which makes this dvd both instructional and entertaining. If you are not a beginner, you will find the first grooves very easy, but the grooves get more interesting as the programme progresses. As Tommy says in this dvd - "GO FOR IT" - if you do not have it buy it now. You will not be disappointed.
I'm not an expert.......2007-02-20
Tommy Igoe's drum lessons on video have sent my 15 year old daughter on a journey of passion for drums. The lessons aren't boring, nor are they too slow. Being a child always looking for a challenge, boring lessons can turn this 15 year old off an instrument quickly.

I've been waiting for years for this DVD..........2007-08-23
...ever since MTV stopped being a reliable source for music videos (or at least ones that I gave a toss about.) This DVD is perfect. I can replace the old videotape of the "Singles 45 and Under" videos, and get a look (finally) at all the videos that came out after "Hourglass," most of which I had never seen, or only glimpsed. And they are amazing, especially "This Summer," which is a delightful bit of whimsy from the lads. As an extra super special bonus, a longish live concert from the "Sweets from a Stranger" era is included. Fantastic!
a live performance!.......2007-06-14
Being that there is so little Squeeze video out there, this is a must for fans. The live performance suffers a bit from so-so lighting and camera angles, but the sound is good. The keyboardist is not Jools Holland in the live performance, but he can be seen in many of the videos. Until somebody finds a better video of live Squeeze in a vault somewhere, get this! I purchased the DVD from Amazon through Caiman, it came in 2 days in excellent shape.

another deceptive title.......2007-05-07
Hits of the 80's sounds like a lot of videos from the 80's, not true, there are just 6 videos. Reading the description on the item when I bought it that info was kept a secret.
Nice way to start a collection.......2007-03-25
This is not a bad deal for $8, not a whole lot of selections some may feel but Overall a fairly decent deal. Got to get your feet wet eventually and this seems a safe way to go.
What memories!.......2007-01-04
My kids love to see the songs I grew up with. Back when videos ruled!
Great videos at a decent price!.......2006-04-13
Buy a DVD of videos from the 80s? What? Am I nuts? Sure, I taped huge numbers of the videos years ago, but this is DVD, right?
Right.
I'll confess that the main reason I bought this DVD is for a-ha's "Take on Me" video. It won top honors in its year of release as video of the year. Time has been kind to it. The video and the music hold up well.
The B-52's "Love Shack" holds up well too. If you'll look, you'll see a pre-Superstar Ru Paul dancing in the video (Ru and the 52's are from the Atlanta/Athens, GA area).
Devo's "Whip it" is still one of the oddest and guiltiest pleasures to come around.
The Georgia Satellites' "Keep your hands to yourself" is a hillbilly rock song worthy of praise and one I'd forgotten.
"Drive" by the Cars and "New Sensation" are probably the two best produced videos on the DVD. They both show off the groups and are more "classy" than the others.
All in all, I sure yearn for the days when MTV played videos all day and night long and allowed us to enjoy music in a whole new way. I also yearn for videos where the people in them seemed to be having fun....
Worth the 8 bucks it costs!

ESSENTIAL COLLECTION,THE (IRISH TENORS,THE)
Amazon.com
Television producers seeking to combine the twin phenomena of the original Three Tenors (Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, José Carreras) and Irish music (an international sensation fueled by Riverdance) came up with the Irish Tenors. The Essential Collection includes both their televised concerts from Dublin and Belfast, the first of which establishes the format: John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan appearing on a small, plain stage and singing mostly traditional songs ("She Moved Through the Fair," "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?") in both solos and trios with a full orchestra in front of an appreciative audience. These classically trained performers have strong voices, enthusiasm, and more than a bit of whimsy. The second concert provides more of the same, but is most notable for the debut of new tenor Finbar Wright after McDermott had taken leave from the group following the death of his mother. McDermott does make a brief but dramatic appearance, however, to sing "The Last Rose of Summer," as a tribute to his parents, then rejoins Kearns and Tynan for "Red Is the Rose." And of course both shows include "Danny Boy"--as inevitable a closer as "Nessun dorma" was for that other trio of tenors.
In generous bonus DVD segments (13 to 19 minutes each), Tynan, Kearns, and Wright (but not McDermott) each discuss their musical upbringing and a bit of background on some of the songs they sing. Tynan talks about the emotion of the plight of the disabled child in "Scorn Not His Simplicity" without bringing up his own disability (which is mentioned in the text biographies), and Wright, the newest tenor, admits the advantages and disadvantages of performing with the group and also cites influences as wide-ranging as Mario Lanza and Queen. This DVD is excellent value for the Irish tenor fan. --David Horiuchi

Going To Buy.......2007-03-20
We rented This DVD for Saint Patty's Day. Both the wife & I loved it. There was not a song on it that we did not like. The wife commented on how the Tenors were so extremly close on each note, that most of the time they sounded as ONE! We're definately going to buy this one. One song titled " The Last Rose Of Summer " is so beautiful that I want my daughters to sing that at my funeral.
The Irish Tenors - The Essential Collection.......2006-07-19
This is truly one of the best performances of the Irish Tenors. Having seen all their performances in Boston and enjoyed their music on CDs, I was thrilled to get this DVD. It brought back all the memories of the wonderful concerts. Also having the extra clips about each of The Irish Tenors made it much more personal. They are truly a remarkable singing group.
Two wonderful concerts for the price of one.......2004-06-02
I can only add to what other reviewers have said: these are two wonderful concerts by truly talented artists who obviously took great pleasure in performing and entertaining their audiences.
The DVD itself is well produced and clear as a bell. There is one shortcoming: As was noted by one reviewer, there is no accompanying hard copy text with the lyrics, etc. But this is a minor glitch.
A definite favorite.......2004-04-12
This DVD has become staple watching and listening fare in our household, from myself and my wife down through all the children to our four-year-old son, whose favorite song is now "Grace" and who runs around the house singing "...and we'll all go together, to pick wild mountain thyme" from "Go, Lassie, Go" at the top of his lungs.
It is fantastic to have both the Belfast & Dublin concerts together on one DVD with the live concert dead time (pardon the pun) between selections minimized. It is hard to imagine, from the robust and polished (virtually operatic, with the exception of John McDermott, whose presentation is much more suited to popular song than to opera or lieder), that in addition to the many traditional Irish songs, some of these are modern popular ballads. For example, I find Finbar Wright's rendition of the Isle of Inisfree vastly superior to (certainly much more classically styled than) the original version actually in the movie from which it was taken (The Quiet Man). This, of course, is testimony not only to the skill and training that went into developing these voices, but also to the skill and stylistic presentation of the arranger/conductor (Frank McNamara).
This is definitely a five-star production. I have to rate it four stars, however, only because the more I listened, the more I wished that the producers of the DVD (not the concerts) had included one or both of these two things: 1) a printed insert containing the poets' and/or composers' names, the stories behind the poetry, or at least the lyrics themselves or 2) the lyrics as optional subtitles on the DVD itself. I found myself searching the Internet for the lyrics to and stories behind almost all the selections. The interviews in the bonus material are a good start, but this is Irish music, after all, and every poem has a story that demands an emotional response in its own right, even setting aside the superb performances.
Besides all of this, it looked like the artists were just plain enjoying themselves; as much as I enjoy the original Three Tenors (Domingo/Carreras/Paverotti), I find this much more natural and fun.
Delightful; Emotional; Live Concerts and Interviews! Yes!!.......2002-10-10
I just purchased this DVD last month as a little treat for our anniversary. We play the CDs of the Dublin and Belfast concerts in our car all the time; now we have experienced a closeup and delightful two evening concert in our own home! All of these four men are talented and enjoyable, along with the excellent arrangements and huge orchestras.
You must have a tissue box at hand when listening and particularly watching Ronan Tynan sing about "simple child" and the "town that I love". Each singer produced a favorite for us. The shorter folk songs, plus the more dramatic pieces, produced a fine variety of the music in these two programs that held our interest from first to last notes.
They're nothing quite as delightful as watching the facial expressions and a little teasing that went on here and there, plus the expressions of pleasure on their faces during the songs. We've yet to view all the interviews on this DVD, but then we just bought it recently. Truly love those Irish accents because it reminds me of my heritage!
I bought one of these DVDs for a gift, and will certainly purchase more now that Christmas and birthdays are coming up! Truly hope that these performers have more offerings in the future. You won't be disappointed with the pleasure of these two fine concerts and interviews! Yes! Yes!

Brilliant Songs; Slapstick Video.......2005-09-10
This DVD has my most favorite Billy Joes songs. The songs I used to listen to endlessly as a teenager and those that have so much memories associated with.
The picturization are like watching slapstick comedy. Please don't ruin your memories watching these unless you want to ruin these songs for you.
ITS A ESSENTIAL VIDEO COLLECTIO YOU SHOULD HAVE.......2005-09-05
If you know Billy Joel work. You will like this DVD. Maybe could have better clear image but maybe is not possible. I recommend it.
Billy Joel Fans will enjoy these Videos!.......2005-04-09
I'm also a huge fan of Billy Joel (have all of his albums since I was a kid). I often tell friends, I have never been to New York, but listening to Billy takes me there! He's a bit of story teller with the talent to write catchy tunes.
I gave this DVD 4 stars because while I like all the Videos in the DVD, it's by no means a complete collection. There are songs missing from the Storm Front and River of Dreams Albums, and some of his older stuff too. It was a surprise to see such songs as "Los Angelenos" and "James" on this collection. I like his 80's videos because they go very well with his music. Perhaps a two CD collection could have captured everything nevertheless, it's still a must have for Billy Joel fans.
Piano Man of Wonder.......2005-04-09
I reeally love a lot of great artists that have been not just influential, but artists that have such great appeal for pop music. Yet, while there are so many great acts out right now who really don't seem to have as much in influence as they did back in the 70's and 80's. For a true legend like Billy Joel, his music still keeps coming back, despite his departure from recording any well-received songs in over a decade. Still, that hasn't stopped his catalog of videos and songs from coming back with another collection of winners. Yet, when there does come to a really well put music video DVD reflection of Billy's music, it does miss the shot here.
Billy Joel: The Essential Video Collection is a well put reflection of Billy's best music videos from the 70's and 80's. The collection of songs here is very well put and remastered well. This DVD music video collection features great Billy Joel videos like Tell Her About It, the classic soulful Uptown Girl, Honesty, The Longest Time, You're Only Human (Second Wind) and other greats. Yet this music video collection does miss quite a lot when it comes to his later videos like The River Of Dreams, Lenningrad, the classic retrospective video We Didn't Start The Fire, I Go To Extremes, the dramatic video for The Downeaster Alexa, or No Man's Land.
I still think it is just a shame Billy Joel hasn't came back into the pop music scene, because his music just remains as pure classic. As for this DVD collection, I really would only suggest this, if you purchase the Greatest Hits Volume III music video collection to go with it. Otherwise, there would just be so much in videos missing.

Great video collection.......2003-11-16
I bought the VHS version of this (I didn't have a DVD player at the time but now I do) but whichever version you own I think we all agree that it is a great collection of Billy Joel videos. I especially was pleased to be able to see videos that I had never seen before or had only seen brief clips from like "James", "My Life", "Big Shot", "Honesty", "All for Leyna", "You May Be Right", "Sometimes A Fantasy", "Everybody Loves You Now", "Los Angelenos", and "Goodnight Saigon".
Given all that, here are a few minor complaints:
1) Why couldn't they have put the "Video Album Vol. 1" video of "Piano Man" on this instead of a mediocre live version that we can already get on VHS or DVD? I mean, it's not like they're going to ever re-release the "Video Album" volumes on DVD.
2) Couldn't they have changed the sequence of the videos in some way (my preference would have been chronological) instead of just splicing together the two "Video Album" volumes and then tacking on the extra videos at the end.
3) I guess I can understand why they didn't include most of the videos found on the "Greatest Hits Vol. 3" video since that was released not too long ago but if you're gonna call it "The Essential Video Collection" then shouldn't it include ALL of his essential videos.
4) Would have been nice if they could have dug up a live clip or two of performing any of his hits from "The Stranger".
Overall this an excellent video collection and I would have rated it 5 stars but the complaints I listed above were enough for me to deduct 1 star.

Very helpful.......2007-07-03
I agree. It obviously was not intended to be your first and only banjo instruction but it is exactly what the title says it is, essential practice techniques. The publisher was also very helpful when I lost the tablature shortly after receiving the DVD and they replaced it for no cost.
Excellent Practice Material !!.......2007-01-04
This DVD is great. The reviewer above is correct in that it has many practice execises. That is what the entire DVD is about. This DVD is absolutely essential if you want to improve your rolls, timing, and technique. This is like sitting down for a good serious lesson. You can work for a good long time with this excellent DVD. Tony gives many personal tips as well. Highly recommended for real progress!
Not very useful.......2005-05-06
I bought and didn't like this much at all. I am a beginning banjo player and found it just gave exercise after exercise without any songs that were fun. I would not recommend it.

WHAT A RIP!!!! ONLY FOR TRUE FANS :( .......2007-02-13
If it wasn't because I was desperately looking for Bananarama's "Venus" and Julian Lennon's "Too Late For Goodbyes" videos, I would have not purchased this DVD, even though it is very cheap. I agree with all the reviewers, these is a very short compilation and I still believe they could have included at least 30 videos here for the same price. Venus, Too Late For Goodbyes, Chains of Love and Holding Back The Years are my favorite videos here and that is the only reason I bought this tiny compilation. It was more than a fortunate situation that 4 of my favorite songs from the 80's were included here. If you're a die hard fan of these videos then buy it, but personally I think is not worth it. 10 stars for the artists and their videos, "0" stars for the compilation
Great memories!.......2007-01-04
My kids love to see the songs I grew up with. Back when videos ruled!
Classic '80s Videos.......2006-08-07
Like a lot of these compilation DVDs, you pretty much have to settle for what you can get. So out of the 6 videos presented here, I got 3 that I really wanted. Bananarama's "Venus" was one of them. And although the girls' dancing style looks a little silly and outdated, it's still a great song. The Pretenders' "Brass In Pocket" is kind of a nostalgic favorite of mine because it was one of the first videos I remember seeing on MTV. "Chains of Love" is the final pick of my three. There's nothing bad I can say about the other 3 videos. It's just nice to be able to see ANY of these videos the way we used to be able to see them every day on MTV. The picture quality and sound are very good, as you would expect on a DVD. By all means, buy this one.
Classic 80's Music Video's.......2006-07-28
Short collection of some good 80's videos. Overall, a decent collection for the price. Own the music videos you loved to watch.
Videos on disc-
1.Bananarama ''Venus'' from True Confessions (1986)
2.The Pretenders ''Brass In Pocket'' from Pretenders (1980)
3.Erasure ''Chains of Love'' from the Innocents (1988)
4.Julian Lennon ''Too Late For Goodbyes'' from Valotte (1984)
5.Simply Red ''Holding Back The Years'' from Picture Book (1985)
6.Howard Jones ''Everlasting Love'' from Cross That Line (1989)
Why tease us?.......2005-08-08
Music videos are short little dramatic pieces. You would think that consumers would be at least worthy of 45 minutes to an hour of videos from the 80's. Call me harsh but I consider this DVD a waste of time. I bought it because I love most everything 80's but it's so short once I get into it it's time to go back to the main menu or put in something new. I really, really would love to own a 2-3 compilation of 80's videos. This is it. I would say this one is for a fan of one of the artists included who wants to have their favorite video on DVD. The Bananrama video for Venus is a fun video with the girls dancing around. Brass In Pocket is classic--Chrissy Hynde as a singing waitress. I mean it's an okay assorment but very brief and bare bones...

Fodder for the addicted.......2007-03-24
There really isn't much one can say about this product. It has the Clash's videos, and if you are into the Clash, you can get all of their videos plus some extra "stuff." The Clash are what they are, which is a damn fine rock and roll outfit. The videos are okay, even very good in one or two instances, but nothing about this disc is remarkable. It's just fodder for those of us who want or need it.
The coolest DVD on this side of the pond.......2005-09-29
This is the one DVD that I've watched at least 10 times. Seriously. The videos are fantastic, opening with a snippet of Clash on Broadway (with small, interlaced clips of the Clash VS. American interview squads and Joe Strummer solemnly intoning that `the enemy you know is better than the enemy you don't know') It effortlessly documents the Bonds theater fiasco and slips into the band soldiering on for the waiting crowds. `London Calling' fires away like an explosion, and soon cuts and breaks up into `This Is Radio Clash.'
All the videos are superb, but my favorite has to be the one for a live version of `Clampdown.' The visuals are fresh and striking, and it all ties together with the music perfectly.
However, the highlight of the DVD (besides the interviews and performances from 1976) has to be Hell W10, a silent gangster movie written and directed by Mr. Strummer himself. It stars Paul Simonon as Earl, a cool Brit who gets caught up with rival mobsters, particularly Mick Jones as the evil Socrates. (The scariest thing? Jones' performance is so scary it's actually good. Or he's good and the character's scary... oh, you just have to watch it.) The film also features brief parts with Joe Strummer as a mustachioed policeman/gangster (and is he or isn't he the blind man `narrating' the story?).
All in all, this is a pretty awesome buy, and worth popping into your DVD player on any rainy night.
An Essential Review.......2005-02-11
This DVD is the best rock DVD I've ever seen, not even led zeppelin's "the song remains the same" is better than this one. What I've come to do is to write an entire review about the whole DVD.
Tracklisting:
1.- Clash on Broadway including "London Calling" (live) and "Radio Clash": the London Calling live is really cool, I just love it but the radio clash song isn't that cool. Vote 8.5/10
2.- White Riot: this was the song that made them become famous among "punk" listeners. Vote 9/10
3.- Complete Control: I like it a little bit. Vote 8/10
4.- Tommy Gun: this one is very very very cool and catchy. Vote 9.5/10
5.- Clampdown: this is my second-favorite of this DVD collection. Vote 10/10
6.- Train In Vain: the song in the london calling album is cool, but played in a live concert is even better. Vote 10/10
7.- London Calling: I've seen this video hundreds of times, but I never got bored of it, the song is really great. Vote 9.5/10
8.- Bankrobber: I love this song you just can't immagine, the best on this DVD and the video is just as cool as the song. Vote 13/10 (no kidding)
9.- The Call Up: the only song from Sandinista! album, but it's cool, they should have made a video for "Magnificent Seven" song, but whatever. Vote 8.5/10
10.- Rock The Casbah: very very nice song and funny video. Vote 9/10
11.- Should I Stay Or Should I Go: maybe their most-known song, it's very catchy. Vote 9/10
12.- Career Opportunities: this one is the best song on The Clash album, along with "Jenie Jones". Vote 9.5/10
Special Features:
- HELL W10: this movie is just as cool as any other mafia movie (ok the godfather is a lot better but this one is very cool). You know, music artists aren't that cool in making movies, but this one is really great. Directed by Joe Strummer. Vote 8.5/10
- Promo Footage:
a) 1977: more or less. Vote 8/10
b) White Riot: same as before. Vote 9/10
c) London's Burning: very cool song. Vote 8.5/10
- Discography: here you can check all The clash albums, songs and compilations
- I Fought The Law: many bands have tried to cover this song from Bobby Fuller Four, but I like this one the best. Vote 9/10
- Interview Clip: just an interview on the band
So I guess this is it, I've reviewed anythin that comes on this DVD, and I think it's worth the 15-20 bucks if you like The Clash. Even better than the Westway DVD.
may not be essential, but is worth every penny.......2004-06-29
People say that there needs to be more live footage, more interviews, etc. but for me the pure, raw, frontal power surging from the Clash's performances are plenty enough. People also complain that the videos are not the best. Look at any other video made in that time period! They were all dreadful, cheesy, and of poor quality. But just the fact that the Clash were so revolutionary in that day (and even today) compensates for anything. Personally, I loved all the videos. I'd much rather watch them than any other music video playing on MTV or VH1 today. And as for Joe Strummer's silent movie... a classic. Granted, the plot is hard to follow and the camera work is "sketchy" but that was all they had! What do you expect? There were no digital cameras and computer generated images back then. And I love the way the "old time" b&w movies looked. And this is coming from a 16 year-old.... Strummer's movie may not be an award-winner, but Lord of the Rings couldn't hold a candle to his work. I highly recommend this DVD
A Great Find for Clash Fans !!!!!.......2004-03-11
All Clash fans need to buy this DVD for 3 reasons: 1) It features two classic live tracks/footage from 1977 rehearsals that are previously unreleased (amazing stuff), 2) The Joe Strummer silent B&W movie is interesting and features all members in a setting no one has ever seen until now, and 3) We get a few extra moments of from "Clash on Broadway" - their style, stance and attitude were always distinctly ahead of their time.
