Born on the plantations of the Mississippi Delta, the blues is America's root music. Few performances of the early masters were ever captured on film, but those that were are profoundly insightful and entertaining. On this DVD, enjoy these blues masters: Son House, Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, B.B. King , Billie Holiday, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Big Joe Turner, Mamie Smith, Roy Milton with June Richmond, Jimmy Rushing with Count Basie, Ethel Waters with Count Basie, Big Bill Broonzy, Ida Cox, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Joe Williams with Jimmy Rushing. Could be better.......2007-04-07
Yes, I understand why the U.S. History lesson applies to the hisory of the Blues BUT: Did we really need to see video clips of JFK's presidency & his assassination as background to Jimmy Witherspoon's "Ain't Nobody's Business"? Was it misrepresentation to use late 1970's film footage to introduce Muddy Waters in the late 50's segment? Imagine my surprise to find Clifton Chenier, the king of Zydeco, listed as a Blues artist. Did they have to use the guy that recorded voiceovers in his bathroom for the Army's V.D. training films as the voiceover for this?
All I'm saying is, It could've been better.
Great DVD........2007-01-05
This DVD and the Howlin' Wolf Story are second only to the DVD, "The Blues." It is almost impossible to rank them because they are unique and very special in their own way. Should be in every one's collection.
History of Blues.......2006-11-05
"The Essential History of the Blues" is just exactly what the title implies. For anyone interested in understanding more about the origin of the blues, as well as, some of the first recordings, this would be an excellent addition to their music library.
For Blues Fans.......2006-08-14
If you have a real interest in blues music and those who created it, this DVD can be a jaw dropper. It's well worth the price.
Going down to the River.......2006-05-09
This is an absolutely fantastic DVD of historic Blues performances. There are COMPLETE (not clips) song performances by many great Blues greats including Leadbelly, Son House, Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and several others. The performance by Leadbelly is galvanizing. All of the clips are highly entertaining, many of them in unusual formats, such as the imaginative Jimmy Rushing dramatization of his song. Jazz-blues performances by performers such as Billie Holiday and Count Basie are also included. In between the performances, the narrator tells about key episodes in African-American history and the history of the Blues. Accompanying the narration are historic photos, video clips, and more music. As a college teacher, I find this an ideal video for classes on African-American culture and literature.
Unlike many documentaries, there are NO talking heads, NO pretentious "musicologists" boring us with their large vocabularies. The heart of this video is the music and the cultural background. Kudos to the producers of this excellent video. All producers of music history films should be forced to view this model music documentary.

Wild Style's one of my greatest movies ,I Own the dvd And you Should too...you wont regret addin' it to your Collection :P
ONE OF THE CLASSICS.......2006-03-28
I see some people saying this movie was not all it was said to have been. But you definately had to have seen this during the early 80's to relate to it and it was only meant for the people that actually lived in this time era. For most of you seeing it for the first time in 2006, it wont make sense to you and seem outdated. If your recollection of Hip Hop is N.W.A. or the likes, you will know nothing about this movie or relate to it in anyway - this is raw Hip Hop.
verite narrative.......2006-03-13
The historical importance of this piece is clear. In addition, DV filmmakers should own a copy to study the method. First: know someone who knows everyone at the center of a cultural explosion in its early days. Second: give them creative license. Third: film all their friends. Fourth: stage an amazing concert in an abandoned amphitheater without a permit. Fifth: film everything. I love this movie.
Not As Great As All The Hype .......2006-02-24
I hear all the time as i read hip hop mags and articles
all about how great Wild Style IS THE BEST HIP HOP movie
ever. Well I purchased it at the first of the year and guess
what it cant't hold Beat Street and Breakin or Krush Grooves
jockstrap. I think the movie Rappin or even the not so get
Lorenzo Lamas Hip Hop movie Body Rock has moments that's
even better than Wild Style. People who read this will
probably say what gives you the right to think you know so much
well me being 30 years old you can do the math. Thats around when the Hip Hop movement started. So if your a movie collector.
Go ahead and buy it but if you want a good movie to watch.
Then purchase somthing else.

Bruce Lee and James Coburn conceived the story for this unusual blend of fantasy, martial arts adventure, and Zen mysticism that should please cult-movie collectors and action aficionados with a taste for the offbeat. The bland but serviceable Jeff Cooper stars as a lone warrior who sets out to find the mysterious Book of All Knowledge. He faces numerous physical challenges on his journey, chief among them David Carradine in four roles (including a half-man, half-monkey), as well as numerous philosophical conundrums. While the dialogue by Sterling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night) and Stanley Mann (Eye of the Needle) occasionally teeters into self-parody, the action and pace rarely lags, and the fine supporting cast, which includes Christopher Lee, Eli Wallach, and Roddy McDowall, lends a degree of gravity to the proceedings. One wonders how the film would have played with Lee in the cast (it had been a pet project of his for years, but was completed years after his death), but the end result is certainly watchable and entertaining. Blue Underground's DVD includes a wealth of extras, including a typically laid-back interview with Carradine, commentary by director Richard Moore, trailers and TV spots, an alternate title sequence, and, most intriguing of all, Lee's original script with Coburn and Silliphant (accessible only via DVD-ROM). --Paul Gaita

The Adventure Epic Written By Bruce Lee - His Dream Project He Would Never Live To See!

David Carradine (KILL BILL), Christopher Lee (THE LORD OF THE RINGS), Roddy McDowall (PLANET OF THE APES) and Eli Wallach (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY) star in this acclaimed cult hit that brings Lee's personal philosophy to the screen with a still-potent combination of mysticism, humor and martial arts mayhem.
CIRCLE OF IRON - also known as THE SILENT FLUTE - has now been remastered from its original negative and features exclusive Extras that honor the legacy of Bruce Lee, including an all-new interview with David Carradine.

Circle of Iron.......2007-05-12
A classic of Zen Philosophy. A bit far-fetched, but nevertheless entertaining and funny.
GREAT MOVIE ! Unique and interesting.......2007-04-29
This is one of my all time favorite movies ... every line is clever and the scenery and soundtrack music are beautiful ... the fight scenes are some of Carradine's best ... I love the simple but clever plot, the moods and the cinematography ... it takes you to a different place and time ... When i was a kid i would watch this over and over on late night Cinemax. I would put this movie in with the likes of Excalibur (another of my favorites). If you like Excalibur, get this movie. This one is much lower budget but a hidden gem.
The Silent Flute.......2007-04-07
"Circle of Iron" is either a whimsical martial arts movie or a profound exploration of the nature of man, depending on how seriously the viewer takes the philosophical side of martial arts. Based on a story by Bruce Lee, the movie features a quest by a young martial artist named Cord (played by game good humor by Jeff Cooper), who is in search of a mysterious book of knowledge. He is sometimes accompanied on his journey by a blind seer (played by David Carradine) who alternately teaches and challenges young Cord. The seer seems to materialize almost at random along the journey, announcing himself by playing a "silent flute' that only Cord can hear. In a remarkably versatile performance, David Carradine also plays a series of opponents Cord must confront in his journey to the book. The solid supporting cast includes Christopher Lee, Eli Wallach, and Roddy McDowell.
The movie alternates between the mythic landscape over which Cord travels, and the various set-piece but not always obvious obstacles he must overcome. Cord starts out believing that fighting is the solution to every challenge, but comes to understand that more subtle arts must be learned. At the heart of the movie is Cord's slow journey to self-knowledge, one finally fulfilled at his destination on a distant island presided over by a order of monks who guard the book of knowledge
This movie is recommended to fans of the early days of the martial arts genre, of which this movie is a better than average example. Both the humor and the philosophy are gentle, and the fighting sequences are more rhythmic than brutal. Be sure to watch an included interview with David Carradine for some insights on the making of the movie.
Mystery.......2007-03-28
Unfortunately they cut out the most part of the "DEATH"- sequence, so that the film lacks in coherence.
Interesting Find.......2007-03-22
I found this film at a video store, it was a special $.99 rental. It was the first time I have ever seen this film. I was draw to it with the mention of Bruce Lee and David Carradine.
Now that I have watched the film and found out a little of its back story, I find the film passable at best and frankly wouldn't mind seeing it remade. David Carradine himself is great but as you watch the film you find that you wish he either took the role of Cord for himself, or he just added it to the other 4 he was already playing. Cooper is practically unwatchable. Though I did enjoy some of the notable stars in the film, I could have done without the scene involving Eli Wallach as it was a silly addition that was not needed.
The martial arts in the film are enjoyable though at times slowly paced, David does well seperating each of his characters even during the fight scenes.
I would also like to note, though Lee may have developed this story, he himself did not possess the acting chops to play the roles Carradine played, at least not as well as David did. Now the seeker, Lee could have done alot with that role. It is a shame he did not live long enough to have been involved.
I do reccomend this film to all those that enjoy martial arts in general and Carradine in particular.

Anyone who calls the late McKinley Morganfield, aka Muddy Waters, the greatest of all bluesmen isn't likely to get a whole lot of argument. But just in case, Classic Concerts offers a handy rebuttal to any doubters. The approximately 90 minutes of music here were drawn from three separate Waters concerts, spanning some 17 years. The five tunes from the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival include two, "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Got My Mojo Working," that will no doubt have been seen by many Muddy fans before now. Yet while the grainy black & white visuals still leave something to be desired, the producers' choice to sync up three songs with stereo sound from the Chess album Muddy Waters at Newport has resulted in vastly improved audio, all the better to appreciate Waters and his superb band's (with James Cotton on harmonica and Otis Spann on piano; also look for blues shouter Jimmy Rushing and other guests, including a couple of delightfully entertaining dancers, on the show-closing medley) now legendary performance. The eight-song Copenhagen show from 1968, a complete set seen here for the first time, may be even better; the audio, featuring Muddy's inimitable slide guitar, is astonishingly clean, the band rocks (this set's version of "Mojo" is the finest this reviewer has seen), and although the Danish director seems a bit lost (as swell as drummer S.P. Leary is, do we really want to see close-ups of his hands while someone else is soloing?), the many shots of Waters' wonderfully expressive face are a treat. By the time we get to the footage from Norway's Molde Jazz Festival in '77, the personnel have changed again (guitarist Bob Margolin, who wrote the DVD liner notes, and harmonica player Jerry Portnoy stand out, but they're all aces), but Waters, now in the more avuncular mode he adopted after medical problems confined him to a stool for much of the gig, sounds as strong as ever. A couple of brief interviews and one bonus performance fill out a thoroughly entertaining, exceptionally well-presented DVD package. --Sam Graham

Muddy the Great.......2007-02-22
Five stars aren't enough for this DVD. I have several other blues-themed DVDs - all three in the American Folk Blues Festival series, Memphis Slim and Sonny Boy, Howlin' Wolf Story, The Chicago Blues, Clapton's Crossroads Festival, Stevie Ray at Montreaux, et al - and I have never seen anything quite like this. Muddy is, simply, drop-dead stunning. The Newport concert brings tears to my eyes, and the sound is off the charts. Then the Copenhagen show, followed by the gig in Norway. Excellent quality, sound and visuals. This is as good as it gets. The inner strength and (dare I say) nobility of Muddy Waters has never been plainer.
ClassicConcerts is CLASSIC!!!.......2007-01-06
Outstanding; highly recommended especially if you aren't that familiar with Muddy's work. Just great!!!
Muddy makes it crystal clear.......2006-09-03
Muddy Waters has influenced blues players and fans for years even after his death. His catalog is chock full of standards worshiped by countless people of all ages. The blues can be felt by all generations it is a universal vibe. Muddy was a torchbearer for the blues with an uncanny ability to write timeless music. "Hoochie Coochie Man" is a classic and well documented here. The emphasis is on early Muddy Waters and timeless performances. It is unfortunate that some of the later classics are not found here. But the sampling is varied enough to keep your attention on the master of the blues. He crafted an art form that few have been able to duplicate. When you think of the blues the first one I think of is Muddy Waters. He was an ambassador for the blues before it was exposed to the mainstream. Through his work and passion it became an icon for American music. We all feel the blues and he made them real for everyone. Now it is fashionable to praise the blues and its fatherhood of rock and roll. For little finacial gain and fame these artists played for the soul of expression. They showed the way for those with little knowledge of the roots of the blues. It is an educational experience to witness a blues giant in his prime. One not soon to be forgotten. It is a blessing that there is a video history of one of the all time greats. It is an experience for the ages.

Pure Blues---All MTV or VHS Videos.......2007-04-08
I saw Robert one week ago today, opening for Sir Eric Clapton. I own several of his CDs and this DVD. At the concert, people were talking and waiting for Clapton for the first couple of songs. Before his set was over, all were in to his fabulous vocals and guitar licks. He got two standing ovations before he finished and the crowd shouted out for more.
To end the evening, Clapton brought Robert out to close the show, singing the Robert Johnson tune (and a Clapton signature song) Crossroads.
No doubt, the folks who weren't aware of Mr. Cray's work were shopping for his recordings all this week.
A ROBERT CRAY TIME CAPSULE.......2006-11-26
Having recently seen Robert Cray open for Eric Clapton on his latest tour (October 10 at Verizon Center in D.C.), I was wishing that I could obtain some of his early videos on DVD. While searching through the list of the 20th Century Masters DVDs (an excellent companion to the CD line under the same moniker), I found that his videos were, in fact, available. This nice priced disc includes 6 songs - 3 from 1986's Strong Persuader (Smoking Gun, Right Next Door, and Nothin' But A Woman), 2 from 1988's Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (the title track and Acting This Way), and one from 1990's Midnight Stroll (Forecast [Calls For Pain]). Having only seen the first 2 videos from back in the day when MTV actually stood for MUSIC Television, I was happy to finally get a chance to view the other songs. A must have for all Robert Cray fans.
looking for a live concert whole show.......2006-11-09
This is a collection of music videos, mtv style; with cartoons and things highlighting the themes of some songs; not the performances I hoped for. I personally don't really like to watch "music videos" of this sort, although people who do will probably like this DVD.
Robert Cray's vocals and guitar are clear and excellent.
Hope Robert releases a full concert video, perhaps from his current tour opening for Clapton.
Check out his performance of "Time Makes Two" on the Clapton Crossroads Festival DVD. This is more like what I believe Cray fans are looking for. What I enjoy in music video is seeing the actual music performed, with lots of clear, longer shots of the musicians performing their craft. When such a video is an actual full concert it can be enjoyed almost as much as being there, if it is a quality production of sound and video, and without the video jumping too quickly from shot to shot.
When full concerts are recorded uncut, you get the flow of the song selection and the the feel of the variation between faster and slower numbers and the effect the show was designed to have on the audience. Single selections can be excellent, but putting them in the actual concert context really adds something.

This movie was the bomb by far, I seen the movie when it first hit the seen in "97". This movie is a classic no matter how low-budget you thought it was. You get a chance to see New Orleans as it was then before Hurricane Katrina hit. This city will probably never be the same so that's why I say that this movie is a hip-hop classic so go cop this one!
I'm bout it too Master P........2005-05-03
This faithful picturization of Master P's grim and depressing drama of Southern decadence will shock many regular picturegoers just as it will be widely praised and discussed by sophisticated patrons. Because of the realism of its squalid way of life, the earthy quality of chief characters and its frankness in dwelling on sex, it is strictly adult fare. The fame of the Broadway stage hit, which won the Pulitzer Prize and toured the key cities, and curiosity about P's portrayal will attract feminine fans and insure strong grosses in the metropolitan centers. It's too talky and slow-moving for neighborhood or action houses. This is a sordid tale of unhappy humans and director Master P has spared the audience nothing by revealing the savage brutality of the dirty south.

It is what it says it is! .......2007-07-23
Ok, I bought this specifically to see Son House. He plays a couple songs, sings and claps a couple of songs and talks some about odd things. I love Son House.
The rest is Bukka White. I'm not particularly a fan of Bukka White, his music is too busy, has no rests at all between notes. BUT it's exactly what it is advertised as, and Bukka White fans will love it even more than I.
Got to give me a chance to get my tools out..........2006-05-27
This is the first footage I ever saw of either Son House or Bukka White, and it nearly knocked me over! Being familiar with many of the songs these monolithic figures of Delta blues typically perform, it was a near religious experience to see them performing favourites like Death Letter Blues, John the Revelator, Preachin' the Blues, Aberdeen Mississippi Blues, and Poor boy. While I wasn't quite as familiar with some of the other material, it proved equally stunning; from Son House sermonizing between songs, to Bukka White playing the piano for one track. Moreover, as characters both people are highly fascinating to watch, particularly in response to being filmed and placed in front of a television audience. Son House seems simultaneously bemused and bewildered, while White uses the opportunity to really strut his stuff. After having seen numerous other films of these artists, this one holds up as one of the best: They are not yet so aged that their skills have depleted, and Bukka's playing in particular is fiercer and less resigned than any other performance I've seen of his. So the verdict; if you have any interest in these artist, and like me were not yet alive to see them perform, this is your best chance. Also, if you enjoy this and are looking for other great Delta/country blues videos, "Devil Got My Woman" is a superb document of these artists plus Skip James, Howlin' Wolf and Rev. Pearly Brown playing in a juke joint setting. Also, the series "Masters of Country Blues" has proven rewarding time and time again. This is your chance to see some legendary bluesmen in live performance, so go for it already!
This is The Blues.......2005-12-15
When Jack of the White Stripes appeared on Charlie Rose Show he talked about Son House and the primitive beauty of a just a toe tapping against the floor. If you have interest in what he meant, get this DVD. It shows you that big expression needs only a few well chosen elements.
old blues at it's best.......2005-09-16
This is old blues, as close to first generation as you can get on film. Two different styles both very emotional. Son House gives an emotional performance but his performance is too short. I would have loved to seen more by him but there is only so much film of these old players. His conversation about his life during his performance (though limited) gives good insight to his personality and his perspective of life. That alone is worth watching the video.
Bukka White's performance is also excellent. No one quite plays and sings like Bukka. He has a driving style of playing and a voice like none other. One song is done on a piano, which shows a different aspect of Bukka, which I was not aware of before. I've seen two films of Bukka and this one is the best. The funny thing is that Bukka White looks quite serious in the filming but actually has quite a sense of humor and is a funny storyteller. You get more of an idea of his personality through his recorded conversations about reflections of Charley Patton and his telling the funny story of Mixed Water, both which can be found on his recordings.
If you love blues then this film gets you as close to what you would have seen in their time. If you are a blues player, then there are good close up shots of both players and how they are playing.
Nothing like seeing real, old time bluesmen in action..........2005-04-27
Blues does not get any more genuine than this! These are black-and-white performances, filmed in Seattle in 1965, showing both Son House and Booker White(by all accounts he hated being referred to as "Bukka") at the height of their powers.
Son plays his two best songs, "Death Letter Blues" and "Preachin' the Blues", as well as two a capella gospel numbers. It's incredible to watch his transformation from a frail, shy older man(during his introductions to the songs) to a raging, masterful performer, pounding his National guitar and singing like you've never heard anyone sing before.
Booker's set is a bit longer, opening with his anthem "Aberdeen, Mississippi". Younger than Son, he tears through the performance at full throttle, singing in a gravelly voice and strumming propulsively(the train-like momentum is THE hallmark of Booker's music). The highlights for me are "Mama Don't Allow" and "Poor Boy"...I'm in heaven when I hear songs like this.
Interestingly, the small audience(you don't see them, but it's evident that only a handful of people are present) applauds Son, but not Booker. I've always wondered why this was. At any rate, get this DVD! If you're a country blues fan and you haven't seen it, you're really missing out.

VERY GOOD.......2006-10-14
Good story - good acting - master p has released some pretty good films and some pretty bad ones.
This is one of the better dvds from p.
the music video at the end of the film ( we soldiers) is not on any album.
worth watching even if you are not a fan of master p.
You've got to be kidding!!!.......2005-05-26
The first Bout It, for a low budget movie was outstanding and innovative. It was gritty and poignantly real. In the Still Bout It, I don't know what the H@*L they were doing. The movie was simply atrocious! I was so disappointed in the movie that I wanted to throw it out of a window. I am a big supporter of Master P and the No Limit family however, he needs to stick to music or come real next time on the movie tip. Don't waste your money!
Bout' it Bout' it.......2005-05-03
The least that can be said for Master P's "Still Bout It" is that this production is an overwhelming visual experience, supplemented by an imaginative use of all the divergent elements which go into filmmaking. The most that can be said for this MGM roadshow presentation in Cinerama, filmed in Super Panavision and Metrocolor, is that once again, as so rarely happens in film history, an individual talent -- Master P -- has widened and exalted the art of the film by his vision, dedication and uncompromising creative approach to the medium so often called the "synthesis of all art forms."
"Still Bout It" is indeed beyond description by conventional plot terms and descriptive tradepaper summaries. As the past 10 or 12 years have shown, the old narratives which dominated the film world have given way to themes, techniques and concepts, once the private property of the avant-garde, the experimental films, etc. Whether "Last Year at Marienbad" or "Trans-Europe-Express" from France, or Roger Corman's "The Trip" or Kubrick's "2001," from the U.S., the straightforward story has had it. And the audiences of today, primarily the under-30 group down to the early teens, have shown a great, almost revitalized, interest in movies as they are now being made.
With Arthur C. Clarke's assistance, plus the cooperation of NASA and leading American and British experts in the field of space, science, research and the Academy, Master P was able to create a real science-fiction film, one in which every element will quite possibly be known to man in less than 30 years.
Waste of Time..........2004-12-03
I like Master P and all, but, dude can't act! Silk The Shocker can't act! The only reason i gave it 1 star, is because the story was iight, and saying iight, is a stretch, but it was ok for a Master P movie. At times, it seemed they made this movie with a camcorder, i mean the acting was just horrible, i recommend you borrow this movie from someone who already has it, its not worth a dime, and i wouldnt pay a penny for it.
A Hot Mess!!.......2004-06-29
Laaawwwwdd, what was that I just watched. All that money Master P has and he has to release this low budget movie. The acting was atrocious to no end. Why don't Silkk the Shocker just give up on acting all together as long with his rap game.
The two stars were given because the story was good, but the acting just didn't do its justice.
I think Master P should know better!!!
