Description
Carl Perkins was the man behind a number of the great rock classics, including Blue Suede Shoes. Along with Elvis Presley, he was one of the soloists who founded rock `n' roll in the mid fifties at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. From his spot at the original Sun Studios location, Carl Perkins talks about the early get togethers with his colleagues Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and others, about the way he worked with these legends of rock `n' roll and about their fabulous parternships later on. Among Perkins' fans were the Beatles. He talks about the invitation they made him and how it turned out that they had all his records and copied all his sonorities. Perkins wrote songs like Matchbox, Honey Don't and Everybody's Tryin' To Be My Baby, of which the Beatles made their own versions. Perkins reveals how Blue Suede Shoes was written and how Elvis could have released a version before Perkins' own, but refrained for friendship's sake. Welcome to the story of one of the great American founders of rock, captured in an amazing portrait on the spot where it all happened - Sun Studios, Memphis.

Carl Perkins is the man! I lived for several years in Perkins' hometown of Jackson, TN. As I got to know more about Mr. Perkins I realized a depth of musical material that most people are not aware of. Other than his signature song, "Blue Suede Shoes," he is often overlooked when it comes to his impact on music. Since moving from Jackson, I have found that the people that know of Mr. Perkins are fanatical about him. With that said, this DVD is a good introduction to the man. The only draw back is that it is too short! Get this DVD to meet the man, then get the "Carl Perkins and Friends" DVD to hear his music.

Set 1 of this DVD was was recorded live at the Rock 'n Roll Palace in Orlando, Florida. Set 2 was recorded was recorded live at the The Church Street Station Theatre in Orlando, Florida. Tillotson's baby-face and slight frame made him an ideal teen-idol for the early 60s, but his musical preference was country music. The self-penned country ballad called "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'" went to number 3 in the USA in May, 1962 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. The song has since been recorded by over 100 performers, including Elvis Presley. Tillotson chalked up 26 charted hits between 1958 and 1965.

This DVD, recorded live At The Rock 'n Roll Palace in Orlando, Florida, features two of America's most beloved groups. The Platters were one of the top vocal groups of the 1950's, selling 53 million records and being among the first doo-wop groups to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame (1990). The Coasters comic vocals plus the writing and production of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller resulted in a string of wisecracking hits and they were among the first African American singing groups to cross over and to be considered Rock and Roll. By the end of the 50s, the Coasters were one of America's most popular Rock and Roll groups.

Taped live in Rome and originally broadcast on Cinemax in 1989, this hourlong reunion of rock legends duplicates an all-star lineup as it might have appeared at the famous Apollo theater in the late 1950s. Here on one stage are the greatest blues-based musicians who built the solid foundation of rock & roll, all African American with the exception of Jerry Lee Lewis, and all showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. Belting out 15 songs followed by an all-star jam, all seven of these musical icons are in peak form here, and their collective energy indicates that this night, on stage before a packed house of surprisingly young and wildly enthusiastic Italians, was a special one for everyone involved. The visuals are routine--consisting of thorough but otherwise unremarkable multicamera coverage--but the music (with just a few minor feedback problems) is outstanding, and the pace is so breathtaking you'll almost forget Chuck Berry's conspicuous absence.
Anonymously deferring to his musical idols, Dave Edmunds shines as the architect of this spectacular concert. With a fantastic band assembled for this occasion, Edmunds provides most of the concert's ace guitar work, his Fender Strat urging everyone (especially Jerry Lee) to rock as if they hadn't aged a day in 30 years. "Time enduring" is what you would call these magnetic and energetic super stars. Every one of them is great and performs some of their best music. I was suprised that the show stopper was - Jerry Lee Lewis.

This hour long set is HIGH ENERGY all the way! Producer Dave Edmunds winds up these aging superstars and lets em boogie out!From the opening note to the close there isn't a weak link in the party! This was filmed in Italy in the late 1980's and all those involved make this concert relevant for the time. It just goes to show how timeless these guys are. Buy this set and revel in the glory and joy of it all!A must have dvd for any music collector.
