4 out of 5 stars Great instructional.......2007-09-05

Greg Koch is an entertaining, almost cartoonish, guitar clinician who delivers a good overview of Stevie Ray Vaughn's recorded songs. This doesn't break down every little aspect of every song, but it does offer a comprehensive look at most of the signature parts.

5 out of 5 stars Greg Koch SRV .......2007-07-29

Greg has an interesting and whitty approach to his music instruction. The insights along with manageable explanations are a true testament to his overall knowledge of the signature style of SRV. His self effacing approach is a refreshing welcome and his professionalism is not to be confused with those who seek their fame in type of venue. We would like to see a full length edition of Tin Pan Alley in the next series...

5 out of 5 stars An Accurate and Easy-to-follow Primer for Stevie Ray's Style and Signature Songs.......2007-02-01

As a gigging guitarist of 40 years experience who keeps a reference library of books, vids, and DVDs that encompasses styles from Django and Joe Pass to Merle Travis to John Scofield and Jimi, I can enthusiastically recommend Greg Koch's clear, accurate, and informative "guide to SRV's style and repertoire". Koch is obviously intelligent and talented, and clearly enjoys communicating his jones for Stevie Ray's music and technique. One caveat (and this does not dock the DVD a star in it's value rating of 5, since it is really quite trivial): Koch's personality is an acquired taste. There's a sort of lame 70s goofball Steve Martin impression going on there once in a while that is a bit offputting. This does not, however, spill over into Koch's instructional content. Thank god. An excellent instructional DVD, Greg. Five stars.

1 out of 5 stars SRV probably wouldn't understand this!.......2006-10-24

This DVD was a real dissapointment for me. You have an SRV wannabe bloviating to the max. Lots of music jargon that SRV himself admitted he did not understand. SRV was perhaps the best example that knowing a lot of music jargon is not required to play well.

I was hoping to get some insights into how SRV actually played the guitar. I can figure out how to do things like string rakes myself. I really don't care for the jargon. What I see is a trio playing a few SRV songs and throwing around a lot of jargon and pretty much nothing else.

If you like to talk the talk, you'll like this CD. I play the guitar for fun and get enough "talk" at work. I'd prefer to learn to walk the walk when I play the guitar, and for that, this DVD is not of much use.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME A++!!! A GREAT TOOL TO LEARN FROM.......2006-10-22

Don't bother to pay homage to what a few of these idiots have said here. Not to regurgitate what others have said, but if you fit in the category of being "....disappointed b/c SRV isn't teaching on the DVD dude..." category, I suggest you go and re-learn some of the basic facts about SRV, and modern DVD technology.

Although DVD technology was implemented as early as mid 1992, the consortium of DVD technological companies didn't agree on a specific DVD standard until early 1995, and thus the trickle of DVD media being mass released until later in 1997.

How would SRV even have been on the DVD, unless it was re-mastered from a reel to reel, or VHS style recording??

-Enough of that-

Anyway, Greg Koch is by far the best "blues" instructor I have seen. By proxy, he nails the SRV style instructional video. I have heard, and seen many SRV fanatics, live and on a personal level, Greg takes the cake not only with his playing, but his tone and knowledge of musical styles. His ability to teach, analyze, and slow down the music makes it digestible for any intermediate or better player.

Saying this, don't expect to nail SRV's songs overnight b/c of a DVD lesson. It takes years of playing, years of listening, and an overall blues ear and style to be ready to play and understand his (SRV's) music, even with the aide of these lessons.

Thanks for the great work and "...keep em' coming" Greg!!

the information and teaching is cool, the emcee style is fun, but man this audio has had the life compressed out of it. Part of SRV's style was his tone, and it has been just decimated by whomever did the audio for this disc.

5 out of 5 stars A great instructional video........2006-08-02

I've reviewed the other Koch SRV instructional video in its review section, but I'll repeat the gist of my comments here. This is top flight instructional material presented by in a very entertaining way by a guy who can play and who connects with the material. If you are an intermediate or better guitar player, you will be able to easily learn the key parts to the songs on the video with a little practice. I've bought all the videos that Greg Koch has put out and they are uniformly excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! Great help learning the SRV style!.......2006-03-25

I am a hack guitar player who picked up SRV tabs off the web. My frustration told me to throw away the crap tabs and buy this SRV DVD. I did and I am happy. I also picked up the corresponding SRV tab books for the songs covered on this DVD. (highly recommended) My only beef with this DVD is Hal Leonard's omission of tab sheets so you could work along with Greg. Greg is very solid in his teaching of SRV's licks but you need some knowledge of the blues and scales. If you want to learn Stevie licks and get a history lesson of where SRV's roots lie, this is an excellent product. Will buy the other one soon.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD is awesome. .......2006-03-15

It has some great songs. They jam with the songs, they break them down slow, you can browse the chapters, flip over to the slow breakdown part, use AB loop on your DVD player and practice practice practice, it's the best way to learn a new song, IMO.

Greg Koch can play! AND he's not a annoying dork like some of these instructor videos have.
