Description
VIRGIN is the story of Jessie (Elisabeth Moss), a rebellious teenager who is wrestling with her own spirituality and her family's conservative Baptist tradition. After a sexual encounter that occurs while she is unconscious from drugs and alcohol, she finds herself pregnant. With no memory of sex, and having a dream in which God speaks to her, Jessie proceeds with the belief that she is carrying the next Christ child, a belief that at first enrages and then inspires her, causing violent opposition in her community.

This movie builds.......2007-01-29
This movie starts out a bit slow, a bit meandering and its doe not feel like the description on the dvd case. But it does... just not the way you expect it, and it builds to a very emotional and devastating ending. I was trying to work while watching it, but that was impossible. It demanded my attention and left me stunned. A great movie!
Beyond Initial Understanding.......2006-06-19
There are certain actresses that if they are in a film, I expect to experience some uncommonly good perspective about some idea or persona that is often misunderstood. For me, those actresses include Robin Wright Penn, Chloe Sevigny, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson, and several others.
Robin Wright Penn acts in this film, and she also believed enough in the film that she was an executive producer. "Virgin" stars Elizabeth Moss, who was Zoey Bartlet from TV's The West Wing. She and the rest of the cast do a tremendous acting job.
The hypocritical father thinks he is doing "good" by condemning and chatising his daugther, following the cruel and misguided persecution of the community. Jessie asks her father, "Who is the liar?" Her father says, "I won't betray my God for you." Sometimes life gives us improbable truths that raise the question of "Do I follow the community's directive or do I consider that my child is telling the truth?" The plot is set up to give an example of where an improbable fact is true. And it is the interpretations of those improbable facts that determine the fate of the characters.
Jessie tells a story of an animal experiment. It's purposefully unclear whether the story is true or something she made up. But it presented questions that I don't have answers for. Another "story" is told by a mad woman, a story that gives another example of where a premature and uninformed interpretation of the facts leads to a tragic violent decision. The story appears to cause Jessie to stop incorrectly blaming and trying to hurt her child.
This movie does not turn away from facing the brutality of rape and the warped mentality of a rapist. The movie is an adult conversation about the brutalities of misunderstanding. It's tough to keep watching all the way to the end, but I encourage you to watch it all. If a theme of the film is "Don't prematurely judge without all the information", the film itself is an example of that theme.
Great art can be interpreted well in many different ways. This film is larger than my understanding, smarter than me, and I'm privileged to have seen it. If after watching the film, you have any concern whether writer/director Deborah Kampmeier has more intelligent things to say about women's issues, then watch the equally recommendable short film on the DVD, entitled "Eat Your Heart Out."

Most Moving Movie of the Century.......2005-08-01
When I first saw this movie at the rental, it looked interesting, so I rented it. This movie is the best movie I have ever seen. Elisabeth Moss gives an oscar worthy perfermance, and the whole film will make you see how much people have faith in their religion, but thinks it is impossible to have another christ child. I usually don't like movies that make me cry, but this is a must see.
Elisabeth Moss plays a girl who believes she is carrying the christ child. Little does she know the night before she was drugged and raped by her boyfriend. As the movie goes on the small town she lives in revolts against her,"insanity", and basically shuns her. The rest I shall leave as a ending, I don't want to spoil it. YOU MUST GET THIS MOVIE, I KNOW IT IS HARD TO FIND, BUT BUY IT THEN IT'S WORTH IT!
Couldnt finish it.......2005-07-24
Virgin seemed like an interesting movie, but half way through I couldnt finish it. Even with its tough topic and Moss' great performance, the movie failed to catch me attention.
Virgin.......2005-06-06
The most powerful film I have ever seen! The emotional aspect of Jessie's(Elisabeth Moss) alcoholism and overall mindful un-rest are so truly moving it has to be seen to be believed. Bravo to Deborah Kampier and Robin Wright Penn for giving us ( the viewers )a movie-going experience that will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Never have I seen such TRUE emotion and heart-breaking honesty. The lesson of the film is different for everyone. I believe that is what has made this such an underground favorite. If I had only 24 hours left to live, "VIRGIN" would be at the top-of-the-list of things to do and see. Do yourself a favor, don't miss this movie !

The '80s pop group Berlin went south about the time the wall of the same name was razed. Now one of them has returned--and it ain't the one with a Checkpoint Charlie. No, former sex kitten (now sex cat?) Terri Nunn is back fronting her band, promoting a new album (Voyeur) and performing in this 14-song, 76-minute (including between-song interview bits) show, recorded in an L.A. studio in 2002. Nunn is the only remaining original member, but Berlin is still about electro-dance music with a Europop sheen, and, especially, sex, with the singer now joined onstage by scantily clad dancers and a female backup vocalist to add to the general sensuality of the scene. The music is a mix of old hits ("No More Words," "Sex (I'm A)," "Take My Breath Away"), songs from the new CD, and a couple of covers, all delivered with considerable power and enthusiasm (and sometimes even in tune) by Nunn and company. Slap this one in the DVD player and prepare to party. --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
Audio Quality is criminally bad. Nunn deserved better........2005-02-18
Others have written full reviews so I will just add one warning to potential buyers-- the quality of the sound engineering work is absolutely shameful. Unforgivable. Nunn's voice is muffled and horribly compressed and, unfortunatley, the better your system the WORST it will sound. Trust me. This beautiful performer, and her bandmates, deserved so much more. Go ahead and purchase if, like myself, you are a big fan-- I am certainly going to keep my copy unless a well-recorded Berlin concert DVD comes out.... just know what you are getting. Good Luck!
Blondie meets Depeche Mode.......2004-09-08
Berlin are one of the great bands that came out of the New Wave era of the late 70's/early 80's. This DVD proves that with songs such as Masquerade and The Metro - the music performed along with Terri Nunn's vocals just makes you want to get up and DANCE!
The only downfall with the performance are the 'dancers' on stage which, to me, spoils the show and the audience....
the audience are just pathetic! There's no energy or emotion and to be honest, I can't understand what the hell they bothered to show up for. I think I could have made up for them on my own!
Overall however, the music is so enjoyable I recommend it!
For fans.......2004-01-29
I love Berlin - and have done since I heard No More Words when it was first released.
I love Terri Nunn - she is STILL sexy, and has a great rock voice.
The quality of this DVD, however, is APPALLING!
Playing in DTS doesn't make the slightest of difference. The mixing sounds like its been done by an amateur, and the video looks like its been shot on a series of home video cameras.
I have many music DVD's, and honestly, this is the worst quality in my collection - lucky I'm a fan otherwise I would send it back!
Another annoying thing is they seem to have resorted to a technique a lot of older music videos used - an interview between tracks. The beauty of a DVD is you can skip to menus and sub-menus to CHOOSE what you want to watch. Mind you, Terri's words were quite interesting,, but not in the middle of the songs PLEASE!
Overall, the production of this DVD is AMATEURISH at best. Very, very unfortunate as Terri Nunn and Berlin are a great band this DVD does not do them justice AT ALL!
Not bad........2004-01-04
I recently purchased this DVD while out looking for some different music releases. Admittedly, the only song I was familiar with was "Take My Breath Away" as I am a huge fan of the motion picture Top Gun. Anyway, I found this to be a quite entertaining DVD purchase. While it's not quite what I was expecting for a concert video, Terri Nunn's vocals (not to mention her unbelievable beauty) more than made up for any shortcomings this disk may suffer from (at least for me). Overall, I recommend giving this DVD a chance.
Average Release. Some Ups and Downs........2003-12-12
This DVD release by the band probably best known for Take My Breath Away from the Top Gun Soundtrack has some pluses and minuses.
As far as the positives, lead singer and sole remaining original member Terri Nunn looks as great as ever. The set list is a good representation of the bands output and the musicians are fairly good.
As far as the other, I have to disagree with the reviewer who thought there were 15 people in the audience. I think it was actually around 20. The audience for the most part looked like a bunch of aspiring models around 20 years old which would have put most of them in pre-school when Berlin had its heyday so I doubt they grew up being fans. The audience did seem to come alive though during the second song, The Metro, which is one of the band's more rocking numbers. You could almost hear the audience saying, "Hey, these guys are pretty good. What's their name again?"
As far as the sound mix I didn't experience the volume changes that some other reviewers described but I listened to it on the DTS 5.1 mix and maybe the problems were on the Dolby Tracks. I did think the overall mix could have used some improving though, especially the drums. Although most of the drums sounded ok, when the drummer hit the one Tom Tom in the front it sounded like he was hitting a plastic trash can.
Overall, if you are a Berlin fan I would recommend to consider adding this to your collection but if not your money will probably be better spent elsewhere. Hopefully the band will consider putting out another live concert release in front of their own fans and maybe include their 80's videos as an extra.
