Description

Introducing '64-'95, the third instalment in Lemon Jelly's rich history of long-players. Breaking away from any (Jelly) mould, Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen have altered the ship's course somewhat and we are treated to '64-'95; their most diverse record yet.

Lemon Jelly have made an album entirely based upon unlikely samples swiped from their vast record collections. Not unlike one of their DJ sets, they flip between musical styles at will and make light work of cramming metal, 70s pop, Euro house, R&B, punk and more into just one album. The title, '64-'95, simply signifies the span in years of the various samples they've used and, as ambitious as the whole thing sounds, it works. The list of musical mavericks willingly plundered in the cause of the good ship Jelly includes 70s popsters Gallagher and Lyle, Scottish post-punkers the Scars, US R&B balladeer Monica and none-more-heavy metallers, the Masters of Reality. Each track manages to come as a complete stylistic surprise without losing any flow from one to the next; having said that, it's probably best not to mention the Maori crooner or Captain James T. Kirk for the moment. Their meticulous sleeve design remains but this time, they've upped the ante somewhat by also producing a full DVD version of the album. From the beautiful machinations of Only Time to the creepy-crawly neon floral jungle of Make Things Right and an abstracted live action dance piece reminiscent of a James Bond title sequence for Come Down On Me, the DVD takes you through a rather sumptuous array of animation styles and weird worlds.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Psychedelic Visuals .......2006-09-18

This entire DVD is awesome, the visuals and music match up perfectly. It's got some really cool 3D type animation along with some plain ol' 2D. A must for fans of the iPod Visualizer, Wave Twisters, The Wall, or Fantasia.

3 out of 5 stars DVD has only one video in the league of "Spacewalk".......2005-04-12

This DVD has 9 videos each 4 to 5 minutes long. All videos are primarily visual effects set to the motion of instrumental music (music comes from the 64-95 album).

5 of the videos are ambients: Come Down On Me, Only Time, Don't Stop Now, Stay With You, and The Slow Train.

There are 3 two-dimensional cartoon-like videos: Make Things Right, The Shouty Track, and A Man Like Me.

And, there is one high-quality-production three-dimensional video: Go.

You will be disappointed if you are expecting videos like Spacewalk or Nice Weather For Ducks -- the only video in that category is "Go".

5 out of 5 stars Really complements and adds to the enjoyment of the album........2005-02-26

Before buying this DVD, I still wasn't completely sold on this latest offering by Lemon Jelly. Their previous release, "Lost Horizons", is one of the best sample-based electronic listening albums out there, certainly a hard act to follow-up. This DVD is probably the best thing they could have done to sell this record. The animation (about 98% computer generated, with one video featuring actual humans added to the mix) is brilliant, varied, extremely colorful, rarely dull and quite amusing. I found myself laughing more than once (I won't give any particulars away, as not knowing what is next is half the fun of the first viewing; needless to say, the video for track 6 was completely unexpected and something I found hilarious!) and just in awe for the over 50 minute running time. I was worried when buying it that it would be something that I would watch once and then have collect dust on a shelf, but I can easily see myself popping this disc in as casual background while cleaning, as something to share with friends, abstract visuals for a party or just relax to on a quiet afternoon. These guys didn't rush to put together a cheap selling tool for their album-they obviously took their time compiling this and put out a top notch product. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It certainly made me appreciate the album more and look forward to listening to it again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-02-22

The earlier comment from Ontario up there says it all... this is incredible... however... the video quality is fine... i mean most of it is computer animation... awesome... only complaint is the sticker was a mother to get off the box... but oh was it worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Phantastic Psychedelics.......2005-01-28

The video quality is quite low, but this DVD does have DD 5.1, DTS, and LPCM audio tracks.

The album itself is great. Mixed-up King's Singers!?! What more could I want? Oh yea: more albums from Lemon Jelly.
