The quintessential movie spoof that spawned an entire genre of parody films, the original Airplane! still holds up as one of the brightest comedic gems of the '80s, not to mention of cinema itself (it ranked in the top 5 of Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 funniest movies ever made). The humor may be low and obvious at times, but the jokes keep coming at a rapid-fire clip and its targets--primarily the lesser lights of '70s cinema, from disco films to star-studded disaster epics--are more than worthy for send-up. If you've seen even one of the overblown Airport movies then you know the plot: the crew of a filled-to-capacity jetliner is wiped out and it's up to a plucky stewardess and a shell-shocked fighter pilot to land the plane. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are the heroes who have a history that includes a meet-cute à la Saturday Night Fever, a surf scene right out of From Here to Eternity, a Peace Corps trip to Africa to teach the natives the benefits of Tupperware and basketball, a war-ravaged recovery room with a G.I. who thinks he's Ethel Merman (a hilarious cameo)--and those are just the flashbacks! The jokes gleefully skirt the boundaries of bad taste (pilot Peter Graves to a juvenile cockpit visitor: "Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?"), with the high (low?) point being Hagerty's intimate involvement with the blow-up automatic pilot doll, but they'll have you rolling on the floor. The film launched the careers of collaborators Jim Abrahams (Big Business), David Zucker (Ruthless People), and Jerry Zucker (Ghost), as well as revitalized such B-movie actors as Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Leslie Nielsen, who built a second career on films like this. A vital part of any video collection. --Mark Englehart

Product Description

The persons and events in this film are fictitious - fortunately! A masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy, Airplane! features Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/stewardess/co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and more. Their hilarious high jinks spoof airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love... the list whirls by in rapid succession. And the story races from one moment of zany fun to the next.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Funny! .......2007-09-03

This movie is just so funny! It makes up for so many bad comedies made now. This movie was made on a small budget using some unknowns and veteran television stars. It was a stroke of genius and became a second wind for Leslie Nielson who would go on to The Naked Gun series. This movie is just a gem and is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Never get tired of this movie.......2007-09-01

Don't call me Shirley. I actually got to use that phrase one day. I was so happy. I have watched this so many times and it never gets old. The very first time I watched it I lost it when the reporters went flying into the booths and they fell over. It never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars still zany after all these years.......2007-08-23

Airplane! deserves its place in motion picture history as of the funniest spoofs on film of seemingly just about everything and everyone under the sun--including disaster movies! The plot moves along at a good pace and the acting really holds your attention. The one liners and ridiculously silly scenarios are bound to make just about anyone laugh.

The action begins at an airport where people are boarding a plane to Chicago. Elaine (Julie Hagerty), a stewardess on the airplane, is leaving her lover Ted Striker (Robert Hays), a shell shocked pilot with tremendous issues about his mistakes during "the war." Ted races to the airport to catch up with Elaine and even winds up buying a ticket (which is literally giving off smoke, because Ted asks for what was then the "smoking section") to get on the flight with Elaine.

The plane fills with passengers--and some have problems designed to create hilarious scenarios throughout the film. There is a young girl who needs a heart transplant, two religious zealots, a young boy who almost gets propositioned (!!!) by the Captain Oveur (Peter Graves), the nuns on board, and many more.

The cameos are worth the price of admission alone. Look for Kareem Abdul-Jabaar to play himself masquerading as copilot Murdock; and Ethel Merman plays shell shocked Lieutenant Hurwitz in her final screen role. Barbara Billingsley (the mother from Leave It To Beaver) plays "Jive Lady," a white older woman who understands black street language; and Jimmie Walker plays the man who wipes the windshields of the airplane before they take off. Two of the writers of the script who also directed the film, Jerry and David Zucker, play ground crewmen at the airport when the plane is getting ready to take off as well. Great!

Initially the flight goes well although Ted and Elaine can't quite see eye to eye about staying together--the flashbacks to the times they spent together as lovers include great spoofs of classic scenes in From Here To Eternity and Saturday Night Fever. However, when people onboard get sick because of poisoned fish, trouble quickly ensues. The flight crew becomes far too ill to fly the plane; and then Ted is called upon to rise to the occasion and guide the plane to a safe landing. Soon Ted and Elaine are the only ones able to stay in the cockpit as they try desperately to land the plane in Chicago.

The DVD sports the "long haul" version which integrates cast interviews, deleted scenes and more into the film. You even get a trivia track as well as the standard commentary track by producer Jon Davison and writer/directors Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and David Zucker. One reviewer writes that they were surprised and somewhat frustrated that quite a few of the "long haul extras" cannot be viewed separately from the movie. I can't blame them; but at least the producers of the DVD tried to be creative with a new way of presenting extras. This is only a minor disappointment for me.

Overall, Airplane! shows great forethought; and it amazes me that it was filmed in only about five weeks! The laughs never stop and the countless one liners pop out at you and make you laugh like you haven't laughed in years. Airplane also gently pokes fun at racial and social stereotypes; and the way the film goes about this makes it all the funnier. I highly recommend this film for people who love comedy film and for people who enjoy spoofs of major motion pictures.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Airplane -still crazy after all these years.......2007-08-08

If you are feeling the burdens of life, if the boss, the blues, and the bills gotcha down - escape for awhile, kick back, and allow your sense of the ridiculous to come out. Put in this copy of Airplane in your DVD player and allow the kid in you to laugh at the absurdly ridiculous. You'll feel better after you did. No, this isn't art, it isn't fine cinema, but it doesn't pretend to be. It is what it is-adolescent humor and escapist entertainment. Sure, it was made awhile ago, and some of the cultural icon jokes may whiz past some younger viewers, but it still has enough comedy to catch all ages. No pompous stiff-shirted film maven would like this, but who cares? Laugh it up!

5 out of 5 stars funny.......2007-08-02

this is really funny movie you will ever watch. I couldnt stop laugh. You have to watch the whole movie to understand and laugh.

It's a good workout, that's easy to do. You don't have to learn complicated steps like with some aerobics instruction.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to Sweat.......2007-08-23

I love this video so much from when I did it a few years back that I still remember the dance moves and songs. It was lost in a move and I was sad but am so happy to find that I can purchase it and get to sweating again! The songs are great to motivate you and its constant activity. I can say that this Richard Simmons video makes it fun to sweat!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun DVD to Get You Moving!.......2007-07-07

I cannot tell you how much I hate to exercise! I knew I had to get something that would be fun and would not require me to be an exercise "pro". This DVD is perfect! The routines are fun and I am learning them, although it really doesn't matter if you are not perfectly in sync. The music is great to sing along with while you exercise. You don't feel like you are having to force yourself to do something you hate!

I like seeing the everyday people having fun doing the moves, rather than only people who look like they have been working out with a fitness trainer all of their lives. And...I think Richard is great!

Since I bought this for my younger sister, who grew up during the 70's, I'm not the one to review this product. I did watch it briefly with my sister to make sure this is the one she wanted. I'll think she will like it once she gets into it so far I haven't heard a yah or a nay.

Even if the notorious 1970s porn-filmmaking milieu doesn't exactly turn you on, don't let it turn you off to this movie's extraordinary virtues, either. Boogie Nights is one of the key movies of the 1990s, and among the most ambitious and exuberantly alive American movies in years. It's also the breakthrough for an amazing new director, whose dazzling kaleidoscopic style here recalls the Robert Altman of Nashville and the Martin Scorsese of GoodFellas. Although loosely based on the sleazy life and times of real-life porn legend John Holmes, at heart it's a classic Hollywood rise-and-fall fable: a naive, good-looking young busboy is discovered in a San Fernando Valley disco by a famous motion picture producer, becomes a hotshot movie star, lives the high life, and then loses everything when he gets too big for his britches, succumbs to insobriety, and is left behind by new times and new technology. Of course, it ain't exactly A Star Is Born or Singin' in the Rain. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (in only his second feature!) puts his own affectionately sardonic twist on the old showbiz biopic formula: the ambitious upstart changes his name and achieves stardom in porno films as "Dirk Diggler." Instead of drinking to excess, he snorts cocaine (the classic drug of '70s hedonism); and it's the coming of home video (rather than talkies) that helps to dash his big-screen dreams. As for the britches ... well, the controversial "money shot" explains everything. And the cast is one of the great ensembles of the '90s, including Oscar nominees Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore, Mark Wahlberg (who really can act--from the waist up, too!), Heather Graham (as Rollergirl), William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, and Ricky Jay. --Jim Emerson

Description

From Hollywood's hottest new director comes the outrageous epic that throws the covers back on California's adult entertainment industry in the swinging seventies. It's a touching and often humorous portrait of a most unusual family of filmakers, brought

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars DON`T WORK PROPERLY.......2007-09-16

THE MOVIE IN FACT IS REALLY GOOD, BUT THE PROBLEM IS THE DVD, DON`T WORK THE SUBTITLES. IT'S A SHAME BECAUSE IT'S A SPECIAL EDITION.

4 out of 5 stars A Better Film Than It Used To Be (Figure That One Out...).......2007-09-06

Those who think of Boogie Nights as a porn movie (or even a movie about porn) or whose primary lingering impression of the film is a salacious remembrance of Mark Wahlberg's crowning glory in the last scene are really missing out on what made Paul Thomas Anderson's trip back to the adult film industry of the 1970's such a great story. Okay, let me concede right off that watching good-looking young people cavort skyclad in protracted segments of simulated swivying isn't without its appeal, but beyond that, Boogie Nights recreated a bygone time and place and non-judgmentally cast out a story about complex characters who lived amoral lives, and did all this in such a way that not only does any viewer with half a soul come to care about people who might otherwise easily repel him, but it also rapidly becomes apparent that these same people also care about each other. With its depiction of the rise and fall and apparent rise (hey, no pun intended, I promise) of a porn star named Dirk Diggler and the transition of the adult industry from film to home video, Boogie Nights races through subplots about ambition, societal punishment of deviation, the consequences of drug abuse and marital infidelity, unrequited homosexual attraction, and its revelation of how a family can be created from unlikely strangers. This truly is a movie about a lot more than just the making of porn. It was also supposed to do for Burt Reynolds's career what Pulp Fiction did for John Travolta's, but this was not to be. Furthermore, seeing this 1997 movie in 2007 adds perspective, not only in that we are now an additional decade removed from the mores of 1970's, but as a means of reflecting on how we as a society have matured (or not) as based on how we are able to regard Boogie Nights today.

4 out of 5 stars Dated Masterpiece.......2007-07-29

If you know and love the 70s, this will please you. I can't imagine what it would be like to see it now if you are too young to remember those days. The film stirred up a lot of attention at the time. The director rightfully received lots of attention and praise from the right quarters. The film's vulgarity has its own message. Casting Burt Reynolds was a stroke of genius. Who knew how completely Reynolds would fulfill the role of the porno film director? One forgets that smirk. Nobody can smirk like that; not, that is, until the arrival of George Bush on to the national scene. The cast is without a doubt one of the best in film history, Not since Coppola found Pacino and company has a film introduced so many major talents to the world. Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Don Cheadle, John Reilly: and the amazing thing is that they have all gone on to stardom. Young Hoffman, a brilliant actor in his own right, is hilarious as the paunchy gay boy. The film is profoundly revealing, deep, and at the same time a major entertainment, light airy, colorful, sexy. It is simultaneously an indictment and a celebration of the era, its perversions and its breakthroughs. We are both better people and far worse off since those heady times. The film gives us a glimpse into this past time of bewilderment, waste, and bravery.

5 out of 5 stars Boogie Nights.......2007-07-11

Loosely based on the life of '70s erotic-film stud John Holmes, Anderson's surprisingly human second feature is an Altmanesque blend of wistful humor and naturalistic ensemble acting. Dirk quickly discovers his "real" family in the cozy, coke-fueled decadence of Horner's misfit milieu, where he's nurtured by maternal porn actress Amber Waves (Moore), and befriended by numerous quirky types played by a who's who of '90s A-listers: Heather Graham, John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, and William H. Macy. An offbeat gem, with a tongue-in-cheek "money shot" that'll make your jaw drop.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-06-19

I was pleasantly surprised by Mark Wahlberg's emotional depth in this film. Who knew he could act? The story is basically about a group of lonely people who get together and find a strange comfort in one another and decide to embark on a career in porn. Ironic, dark and sad, but very deep.

4 out of 5 stars Simply cant' beat this one.......2007-09-05

Having been around since the beginning with these guys, this maybe one of the best concerts I've ever seen period. The music is great and the vocals are out of this world. I figured it would be good but it was great instead. 5 Stars is reserved for Beatle music only, so I had to go with 4. Don't waste any more time and buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Truly enjoyable!.......2007-07-17

I'm not a huge fan of the Bee Gees, although I grew up with their music and think they are amazing songwriters. My whole life, the Bee Gees have always had a song on the radio, so for me, they are part of my personal soundtrack. I picked up this DVD on a whim, and enjoyed it so much I think I watched it three times in one weekend. It's still in the player, ready to go again. Simply wonderful! Love them!

5 out of 5 stars THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF THE BEE GEES!.......2007-07-04

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic DVD concert performance entitled "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of Australia's and England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's and Australia's favorite sons, T-H-E B-E-E G-E-E-S! "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" was originally released on DVD in 1997 on Eagle Vision. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic concert or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

There isn't anything new or different that I can say or add about THE BEE GEES that hasn't already been said. THE BEE GEES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest most sacred anthems ever. And get this, THE BEE GEES are in the TOP 5 MOST SUCCESSFUL BANDS IN THE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC! When brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb joined forces, THE BEE GEES would be born and Rock n' Roll would NEVER be the same again. Prior to 1997, THE BEE GEES were still releasing great albums to highly critically acclaim but their impact and popularity in the music world was slowing down and becoming very quiet. Perhaps it was because the album PR or promoting was not as effective as it should have been. However, 1997 would change all of that. 1997 would soon prove to be one of the greatest moments in THE BEE GEES careers as well as their lives. 1997 would also prove to be one of Rock n' Roll's greatest shining moments during one of Rock's finest hours for THE BEE GEES.

Just read what the back cover of this legendary concert DVD had to say: 1997 was an amazing year for THE BEE GEES, with inductions into The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, plus Lifetime Achievement Awards from the British, American and World Music Awards, the Australian Record Industry, and the German Bambi Awards topped off by a 'ONE NIGHT ONLY' concert at the famed MGM Grand Garden Arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Neveda, THEIR ONLY LIVE CONCERT IN 1997 AND FIRST U.S. CONCERT IN NEARLY 10 YEARS.

The brothers Gibb perform their greatest hits from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, including many songs written for and made hits by other artists but never recorded by THE BEE GEES. PLEASE NOTE: You can hear the songs written for and made hits by other artists that WERE RECORDED
BY THE BEE GEES on the 2-CD set greatest hits compilation album entitled "BEE GEES, THEIR GREATEST HITS, THE RECORD." If you would like, you can refer to and read my review on this legendary compilation album when time permits.

And the audio never sounded better! This concert DVD edition is released in a special DTS Surround Sound so you can hear this concert the way it was truly intended to be heard or listened to. The DTS Surround Sound is like 3-D in sound that actually makes you feel like you are actually there in the audience.

As for THE BEE GEES music, I guess that you can say that their music speaks for itself. In my opinion, the "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" DVD concert is without a doubt, a true testament of the greatness, genius and musical creativity of three masterminded brothers. This legendary concert is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, way far ahead of their time. This concert is a trip down memory lane for all of us. This legendary historic concert is the story of THE BEE GEES, their music is their story. And now without further delay, it gives me great pleasure in taking all of you back in time to the MGM Grand Garden Arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1997 where THE BEE GEES are about to take the stage and make music history AGAIN!

It is now time to let the sound and music of THE BEE GEES to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically as it was originally and truly intended. "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" has and contains 32 legendary hits in all. This legendary concert begins with the forever BEE GEES brilliantly stamped trademark classic anthems "You Should Be Dancing," "Alone," "Massachusetts," the beautifully slow soothing "To Love Somebody," "I've Gotta Get A Message To You," "Words," "Closer Than Close," the beautifully slow "Islands In The Stream," "One," THE BEE GEES tribute to their late brother Andy Gibb, "Our Love (Don't Throw It All Away)," the electrifying "Night Fever," the beautifully and incredibly well arranged falsetto sung number "More Than A Woman," "Still Waters," "Lonely Days," "Morning Of My Life," "New York Mining Disaster 1941," the beautifully slow and angelic "Too Much Heaven," "I Can't See Nobody," "Run To Me," "And The Sun Will Shine," the amazing "Nights On Broadway," the beautifully slow soothing anthem "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart," "Heartbreaker," the beautifully slow and breathtaking anthem "Guilty," "Immortality," "Tragedy," "I Started A Joke," "Grease," the funkish "Jive Talkin'," one of the most beautifully slow orchestrated anthems ever, "How Deep Is Your Love," the legendary theme from Saturday Night Fever, "Stayin' Alive" and the explosive ending just like the way this legendary concert began, "You Should Be Dancing."

All in all, this is one hell of a concert that everyone of all ages should own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal DVD music collection. This legendary concert has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, after this legendary historic 1997 concert performance, THE BEE GEES were back on top and on top of the world where they truly belonged. Everything was fine in THE BEE GEES world until tragedy struck once again. On 12 January 2003, Maurice Gibb, one of the original founding members of THE BEE GEES would pass away and perhaps silence one of the all-time greatest bands in Rock n' Roll history forever. I realize that it would truly be extremely hard for the remaining two brothers to carry on without without their beloved brother. All I can say in this matter is that time slowly heals and only time will tell what will become of this legendary band in the future. One thing that is certain and for sure is that THE BEE GEES have forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. So here's to you Barry, Robin, the late great Maurice, and the late great Andy. Thanks for the great memories and moments. MAURICE GIBB LIVES! ANDY GIBB LIVES! And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEE GEES FOREVER! R.I.P. MAURICE ERNEST GIBB, Born 22 December 1949, Died 12 January 2003 at age 54. Also R.I.P ANDREW ROY GIBB, Born 5 March 1958, Died 10 March 1988 at age 30. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Bee Gees - One Night Only - DTS.......2007-07-02

I love the Bee Gees, always have. The DTS version gives you that fantastic Bee Gees music as it should be heard ... no problem there, loved it. My only beef is the FULL SCREEN presentation ... UGH! I don't know if this thing ever came out in a WIDESCREEN version, but never saw it available.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-05-23

The BeeGees consistently awe and amaze me. The performance is incredible. I would highly recommend this dvd. The only disappointing thing is that my favorite BeeGees song (Love You Inside Out) is missing. But the songs that are here are so well done that I don't hesitate to give 5 stars.

Expanding their one-joke skit from television's Saturday Night Live, Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell are Doug and Steve Butabi, the wearers of the rayon suits and Speedo trunks who bob their heads in unison to dance music while unsuccessfully preying on women in clubs. What's funny in a three-minute piece doesn't always get funnier by expansion, but Kattan and Ferrell give it a go with fellow SNL member Molly Shannon as their ambitious neighbor. By day they work in their father's fake-plant store. By night they prowl the club scene after spraying on the cologne in their gauchely decorated bedroom. A fender-bender with Richard Grieco (playing himself) gets them into the popular club the Roxbury, but it's not all good news, as the brothers soon find themselves torn apart. Doug and Steve are pathetic but lovable, mostly due to the actors' talents for self-deprecating humor. All gifted comedians, Kattan, Ferrell, and Shannon obviously feel comfortable around each other, and their love triangle (which prompts send-ups of Say Anything and Jerry Maguire) is the funniest joke in this mostly lame comedy. Too bad, because it clocks in at about 80 minutes and could have run on television as a pretty good episode of SNL, which has been known to get a bit lame itself. --Shannon Gee

3 out of 5 stars Responsible for launching the career of one of my favorite comedians..........2007-09-07

As a devoted Ferrell fan my wife insisted that I finally get around to watching `Night at the Roxbury'. Honestly, how can you claim to worship the comedian if you have never seen his earliest work? So I made my way down to my local video store and rummaged through the videos until I found this DVD hidden behind a slew of less impressive fodder and made my way up to the checkout line. Upon seeing the video I was renting the young girl checking me out starting to involuntarily bob her head to the side and hum the tune of some 90's dance track and I knew that I was in for a cult classic. To label `Night at the Roxbury' a cult classic may not sit well with everyone, but to be completely honest it is the film that launched the mega-successful career of Will Ferrell, and that alone is worth mentioning. Do I think `Night at the Roxbury' is Ferrell's funniest film? No, but I do think that this was one heck of a start for his career and watching this film further proves that he's always had it.

The movie centers around brothers Doug and Steve Butabi (no...yes). As has been mentioned, this film, along with so many others starring the SNL alumni, is just an expansion of their SNL skits. These two brothers are as lame as lame can be, but in their own eyes they are the coolest cats on the block. Doug, played by Chris Kattan, is the ringleader. He's the more independent outspoken brother. Ferrell's Steve is more of a follower, gullible and naïve and easily manipulated. They work in their father's fake-plant shop but their real dream is to one day open their own night club. After a chance meeting with the owner of the popular club `The Roxbury' they find themselves one step closer to their dream but when their father, the girl next door and a bitter rival come between them and their nightclub they find themselves torn apart and their spirits, along with their dreams, begin to crumble.

This film is hilarious in scenes, corny in most, and just plain ridiculous some of the time, but as some have already mentioned, this is just good goofy fun. This is not the type of film to take seriously so why bother trying to. Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan are hilarious here. In fact, Kattan is so funny that I'm surprised his career didn't skyrocket as well. It's funny to me to watch this film and see how it helped launch Ferrell's career yet Kattan hasn't done much more than the ill-received and poorly orchestrated Corky Romano. Molly Shannon is also great here as the seductive manipulating girl after Steve's heart and the prospect of a family business venture. To any fan of SNL or Ferrell will want to see this, as I'm sure they already have. Now I can really say I'm a fan of Ferrell, a big fan, for I've seen his most recognized film, the film that started it all, and I can honestly say that from the dialog to the soundtrack it's a winner.

3 out of 5 stars A Period Piece........2007-07-26

Sometimes you look at an old goofy photograph of yourself and you know that person so well - you just have to laugh. From today's perspective, that's kind of what watching this movie's like: The movie itself is parodying the `90's dance scene, as the characters themselves try to squeeze out whatever hip was left in late `80's music. And they go through it all as if they don't have a clue, as if we ever really did. From the first five minutes, the characters and plot are so clunky that you know how it'll end just as well as you know your own hand. But it's just as well, and it's so FUNNY, and if you have friends they'll get it right there with you.

The world is becoming filled with so much junk today, I guess time can only march forward, as new generations toss the bad movies of my adolescence into yestergeneration's trash bin. Perhaps some day our kids will watch this movie in an anthropology class.

I just hope that they don't make the mistakes we did.

But this movie gets 3 stars instead of 2 because of the lamp-fake-flower plant shop subplot.

3 out of 5 stars I say it was good..........2007-06-14

but I think will ferrel and chris kattan were alot funnier on SNL which use to be funny back then. The music sucked in this movie (I heard the soundtrack) and some of the jokes were just stupid and some were pretty funny like one of the stupid jokes where steve (will ferrel) imitates an ambulance sound before having sex with one of the hookers he met at the club that was stupid. Well I give it a 3 out of 5 stars for not sucking so bad but it's not my type of movie anymore.

4 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!!!!.......2007-02-14

It's even funnier the fourth time you see it!!! Its nice to go back every once in a while and see how Kattan & Ferrell got there start:)

Description

Dracula has never been so funny and dashing - to say nothing of being an awesome disco dancer - as in this "delightful movie with a bang-up cast" (The New York Times) led by the epitome of suave, George Hamilton, and featuring first-rate performances from Susan Saint James, Richard Benjamin, Dick Shawn, Arte Johnson, Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford! Evicted from Transylvania, Dracula (Hamilton) goes to New York to make Cindy (Saint James), a model with an old soul, his eternal bride. To his delight, she quickly falls for his necking style. But when her would-be boyfriend (Benjamin), a descendant of the vampire-killing Van Helsings, meets his romantic rival, he's determined to put a stake in the count's plans!

1 out of 5 stars Worst DVD evr. Its a crime........2007-09-03

The clasic theme song " I love the Night Life" has been replaced by some generic disco music.
Its the most famous thing about this moviw for cripes sike. MGM stinks. This DVD is a rip off.
It isnt Love at First Bite without "I love The Night Life". Movies are really starting to suck.

1 out of 5 stars RIP OFF !!!!.......2007-08-26

Doe's not include the theme song, I Love The Nightlife, for that reason I will not buy this!!!

Put the dvd out with the song on it and yes I will buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Love the movie but..........2007-08-17

If there is ANYONE out there who can answer this question, I will be forever in their debt: What happened to the disco tune 'I Love the Night Life' by Alycia Bridges during the dancing sequence? I have heard the generic tune MGM inserted as a substitute for 'I Love the Night Life'. For me, without Bridges' disco song, the whole scene between Dracula and his long, lost love falls completely flat. I give the movie a 5 because, as a whole it deserves it. It is clever, funny, imaginative, funny, a riot, funny (uh, did I already say that) and the actors (George Hamilton, Susan Saint James, Richard Benjamin, Arte Johnson and Dick Shawn) are all fabulous. Does ANYONE out there at MGM know why the song has never appeared on the VHS version or the DVD version? Did MGM refuse to pay Bridges' her asking price? Believe me, this movie would deserve a 6 (if there was one) with 'I Love the Night Life' (what would it be like if, when the Dodgers won, we didn't get to hear Randy Newman warbling 'I Love L.A.', or when we heard John Lennon's song 'Imagine' if it was ALWAYS sung by somebody else other than John? There is simply no excuse to remove 'I Love the Night Life' because of money, if that is the case. Is there ANYBODY who can enlighten us as to why the song has never made it onto VHS or DVD? I realize there are more important things to think about in today's world, but, for now, I am fixated on this issue. Please feel free to give me an answer if you know it. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-07-30

This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it. I was extremely pleased to find it still available.

2 out of 5 stars "I Love The Nightlife" disco music missing.......2007-07-24

I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this movie. Some idiot decided it would be a good idea to replace the original music from the dance scene. I have noticed that there are quite a number of other customers who also didn't appreciate this stupid change in the movie.

Saturday Night Fever it's not--call it more like Sunday Morning Leftovers. This portrait of the legendary Manhattan disco and its colorful cofounder, Steve Rubell, plays like the outtakes of a much more interesting film--where's the sex, the drugs, the classic disco music? (It shouldn't surprise viewers that Miramax and writer-director Mark Christopher had a falling-out over the final cut of the film; Miramax prevailed.) Considering that the essence of Studio 54 was about the rich and beautiful, it seems a bit unwise to focus on the poor and only-somewhat-beautiful, namely Shane (Ryan Phillippe), a Jersey boy who gets taken in by the razzle-dazzle of the disco era. Crossing the river, Shane finds another, more exciting life at Studio 54 as a shirtless bartender, and soon finds himself partying with the crème de la crème--and smitten with comely soap star Julie (Neve Campbell). The permutations of the story are familiar; if you've never seen VH1's Behind the Music documentary take on Studio 54 you'll find this film enjoyable, but unlike that exhaustive portrait, too many elements are missing. Most of Phillippe's performance seems to have ended up on the cutting-room floor (although his chiseled torso gets maximum exposure), Campbell's role is basically a glorified cameo, and Breckin Meyer and Salma Hayek, as Phillippe's only true pals, are wasted. The one true gem of the film, though, is Mike Myers's take on the late Steve Rubell, an inspired high-wire performance that balances humor and tragedy without ever giving in to camp or pathos. Had this been a more well-received movie, he'd be remembered come Oscar time--his drunken proposition of Philippe is a minor treasure. The soundtrack does feature some unknown chestnuts and a few new remixes, including an inspired disco version of--believe it or not--Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind." --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars 54 - INTERESTING; HOWEVER, I WAS HOPING FOR MORE........2007-08-16

All in all, I think this is a good movie. If you were old enough to know about Studio 54, then probably, you wanted to see the club for yourself...especially if you were into disco. I can't believe I was in New York several times when 54 was going strong, and I didn't try to watch the crowds from a distance. My friends were afraid to go out at night. Geez!

5 out of 5 stars BEEN THERE, DONE THAT.......2007-07-09

Having been in NY during the Studio 54 era, I recalled much of what I remembered in the film. Thirty years down the road, it still has a special memory for me. On our wedding day my husband, who is Swiss, and went there. I was going to show him a night on the town NY style.Having proudly displayed our new wedding bands, they let us in for free! It was glorious. Yes, we are still happily married and the DVD is part of our wedding memorabilia. I thought the acting was great in the film. The music and capturing the world of difference between New Jersey and New York was classic. We, my husband and myself had a good time viewing it. The best is my daughter's comment, "You and dad were there on your wedding day?" Now, it really is just a memory, but, a fond one at that.

5 out of 5 stars 54.......2006-11-04

I, have yet to watch this movie. As, it's still in it's factory shrink wrap. I'm sure the quality is excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Butchered for your protection.......2006-03-23

Trying to make a film concerning Studio 54 for a mainstream audience is a really bad idea. It's just not possible to do it and actually stay truthful to the climate of that era. Gays had a lot more influence on that scene than the film lets on. From what I understand, the original director's cut was gutted by Miramax before the film was released it and it shows. Other than Mike Meyers portrayal of Steve Rubell, there's hardly a gay character in sight. There's some very good actors in the film and their talents are simply wasted. Thank goodness the good music helped me get through this drivel. Anyone with a taste for fine filmmaking need not bother with this cinematic mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Buy!.......2007-08-01

The Couples Ultimate Dance Sampler by Shawn Trautman was perfect for me as I've always enjoyed dancing but never learned the basics of these dances. As a young woman, I was limited to the dancing that was only done at college dances and balls. This led me to search for a DVD that allowed me to learn not just one type of dance but a variety. I always thought of the dancing world to be quite intimidating but this DVD breaks it down to eight easy dances that anyone who wants to dance could learn from and use.

What I enjoyed most about this DVD was that it was easy to follow even though I was learning without a partner. It was like having a private dance instructor in my living room teaching me the basic steps at a pace I could follow. Shawn's technique of first teaching the basics and then advancing you to feel comfortable going out on your own is what gave me the confidence to break out of my normal club setting and venture out to new dancing opportunities. It's great having that confidence and equally wonderful knowing which dances I want to learn more of. My personal favorites were the Waltz and Salsa! I have confidence in Shawn's teaching style and look forward to the full beginner DVDs to enhance my dancing skills. I highly recommend this DVD for anyone looking to break out of the normal dancing scene and expand their interests in dance.

5 out of 5 stars Beginners Only.......2007-05-24

This is a fantastic sampler, but that is what it is. It is a great DVD if you want to get an idea of what dance you would like to get more in depth training. For $10 or so, it is worth it. If you already have experience, then you should probably purchase a DVD that includes a program that is for a dancer(s) moving to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars Couples Ultimate Dance Sampler.......2007-05-18

We found the DVD to be very easy to follow. It was comfortable to watch (love the split screen) and listen to. The Sampler made it easy for us to pick the dances we wanted to pursue. We'll be ordering more in the future. The other thing we were impressed with was the great customer service.

Very basic--- fundamental production values...Should probably go with a video that does not try to superficially cover quite so many styles, but restricts itself to fewer topics but more in-depth coverage and more practice music time.....

3 out of 5 stars Not enough time, not enough steps........2007-02-03

This movie was OK, but not impressive. Each dance only taught two or three basic steps, and there was not enough practice time with the music to truly feely confident about those steps. My fiance and I did learn the dances, but not without much pausing, stopping, rewinding, and frustration. I am a modern dancer, and pick up movement very quickly, and if it weren't for my ability to break-down and explain the movement, we might not have gotten some of the more difficult moves.

5 out of 5 stars Step aside XANADU...move over GLITTER....Because YOU CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC!.......2007-09-03

Steve Guttenberg plays a composer who decides that if he can't make it in show biz, it's "back to dental school" (which is, in real life, where Guttenberg came from). Valerie Perrine, portraying "the Garbo of models," offers to wander around Manhattan to round up singers who can do justice to Guttenberg's songs, and starts her search by "going for a Baskin-Robbins rush" --- thus blaming sugar for her selection of the Village People as this movie's stars of tomorrow (the only other guilty party besides sugar might be producer Allan Carr).

This late '70s disco group made up of chorus boy types had only one gimmick: They decked themselves out in fantasy "macho" regalia --- one as a cop, another as a cowboy, plus a construction worker, a G.I., a leather-wrapped bad boy, and yes, an Indian. Model agency magnate Tammy Grimes puts it succinctly when she growls, "There's really no accounting for taste."

With a basso profundo voice that makes her sound like a drag queen, Grimes acts like one when she eyes Bruce Jenner: "Fruit-of-the-Loom is doing a big ad campaign, and something tells me you could really fit into a pair of jockey shorts." (He's soon stripped to his boxers, with both Perrine and Guttenberg on their knees in front of him --- you don't want to know why.)

How lads look in and out of their underwear is the movie's recurring motif, an obsession that swells to epic proportions in the production number "Y.M.C.A.": The Village People prance around a health club singing as male wrestlers pin each other to the mat in geometric patterns (like chorines in a Busby Berkeley musical), Speedo-clad boy bathing beauties dive into a pool (like chorines in an Esther Williams musical), and naked dudes lather up one another in the shower (like nothing you've ever seen before).

Answering the question "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Gypsy Rose Lee's kid sis, June Havoc, turns up to observe that the Village People are "just like Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall" (actually, they're just like Garland's audience) and to tell her son, Guttenberg, "It's your music that's bringing all these boys together --- they ought to get down on their knees!" Such double entendres run in the family, for when Perrine needs courage, Guttenberg assures her that "anybody who could swallow two Sno-Balls and a Ding-DOng shouldn't have any trouble with pride!"

It's Perrine who gets the most telling line of all: "This is the '80s! You're going to see a lot of things you've never seen before." Well, yes, but little did she realize that she, Jenner, the Village People, and Allan Carr musicals weren't going to be among them. Nobody saw this movie, which might have been more aptly titled "Can't Stand the Music."

Directed by Nancy Walker (any guesses why she never directed another feature?). Too bad --- A howl from start to finish, Just think what she could've done for all those "talented" Boy bands of the 90s.

"Can't Stop the Music"

Pure Camp

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Can't Stop the Music" is a pseudo-autobiography of The Village People. Jack Morell is a struggling composer who is desperate for fame. What he really needs is someone to sing them. Samantha, his roommate and Ron, a lawyer help him to form a group of six guys from Greenwich Village and the movie captures their rise to fame.
This is not a movie to be taken seriously by any means. There is not much plot, much characterization--not much of anything but the music of The Village People. You don't have to think or wonder or worry, you just have to sit back and have a good time. When the move came out in 1980 it was not considered as campy as it is today. The whole thing is silly but not offensive in any way.
In this film everyone smiles all of the time. I wonder if they were smiling because either they had nothing to say or that they realized what they had to say was so mundane. The movie is funny for many different reasons but not because it was meant to be so.
I have read reviews condemning the film and to those people I say, "Ease Up". This movie doesn't have a thing to say but to take us away from the rough side of life and given us an hour and a half of pure fun. So what if it doesn't have a message--it doesn't need to.

4 out of 5 stars Fond memories of a golden era.......2007-03-07

What do you remember about the 1970s? The end of the Vietnam War and the TV footage of the evacuation from Saigon? The Watergate Affair and the resignation of Richard Nixon? The Energy Crisis and the Arab oil embargo? Or do you remember hot sweaty nights on the disco floor and waking up with a different person each morning? For many of us it is the latter. The late 1970s were like a huge party which should have lasted forever. As we all know it didn't, brought to a shuddering halt by Reaganism and AIDS. Can't Stop the Music came out at the tail end of the disco craze and ushered in the 1980s - a campy, over-the-top monument to a golden era. The centerpiece of the film is undoubtedly the YMCA segment, a huge production number featuring attractive young men in the gym, wrestling, working out and performing acrobatics in the pool - a remarkable Busby Berkeley style masterpiece featuring flashes of full-frontal nudity and which was replayed over and over on prime time television in Australia. That was largely the reason why the film was a huge hit in Australia while it bombed spectacularly everywhere else. Most of the other production numbers are entertaining as well - Magic Night, Samantha, David Hodo's solo number I Love You To Death, The Ritchie Family's performance of Give Me A Break, Listen to the Sound of the City (played over the opening titles) and the title track which provides the climax and ends the film. The only poor segment is The Milk Shake featuring kids dressed as the Village People and a boring, almost tuneless song. Believe it or not this was actually used as a legitimate ad for milk on US and Canadian television. The plot of the film is weak, almost non-existent and provides a fictionalised account of the Village People story. The acting is terrible and is merely a method to link the production numbers. There are no (...) references and the film has a sanitised look about it apart from the YMCA segment. Some of the actors are good, others not so good. Olympic gold medallist and all-round hunk Bruce Jenner playing a straight accountant, the buxom Valerie Perrine playing the object d'esire, a young Steve Guttenberg (the only person to emerge from the film unscathed) who went on to have a successful film and TV career, and a rather seedy character who, it is implied, has a coke problem. The Village People themselves were dropped by their record company shortly after the film and moved to RCA where they attempted to change their image in line with the 'new romantic' craze. The album Renaissance was released and bombed badly, costing them their international following. Realising their mistake they told the media that the album was only intended to be a one-off experiment. But it was too late. The group retired to the cabaret circuit and played dinner dates at Hilton Hotels around the world. A word of warning about this DVD - it is in extreme wide screen and much of the action happens on the edge of the picture so zooming in to avoid the thick black bars on the top and bottom is not recommended. It is best viewed on a large plasma TV in a home theatre. The digital transfer is good and is worth buying for the 1970s look more than anything else - Bruce Jenner in a t-shirt cutoff showing his hairy torso must be seen to be believed. Every generation has its classic films - one generation had Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Another generation had Star Wars. The disco generation has Can't Stop the Music. It remains an irresistable snapshot and a faithful testament to a golden era which we all hoped would last forever.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia .......2007-02-27

Had this on tape years ago - sure beats some of the shows out there on TV.
Just plain fun and a true history of the Village People who have always been different and diverse from all the others. Disco was an interesting craze and this should be saved as archival information. Especially the first song about New York City-super.

3 out of 5 stars Campy bit of disco fluff.......2007-02-09

This campy bit of disco fluff is widely considered to be the milkshake-lubed slippery slope that guided the Village People's 15.5 minutes of bizarro-world fame to a less-than-dignified crash landing. In the lead role is a miraculously flame-retardant Steve Guttenberg, whose film career survived this Discossault against all logic. The acting career of Bruce Jenner, whose ill-advised sashay through the village in shorty-shorts and a half-shirt will forever live in infamy? Not so much. Hindsight, as poor Bruce no-doubt laments to this day, is indeed a beyotch.

What is perhaps most remarkable about this film (aside from the blizzard of blow that had to have been trucked in for the shoot) is that first-and-last-time director Nancy Walker - yes, THAT Nancy Walker - manages to create what is arguably the gayest film ever made, without ever actually broaching the subject. Indeed, the mind-bogglingly homoerotic YMCA sequence alone has the power to elevate the legendary Walker to the loftiest of honorary homo heights. The sequence, which features all of the can't-even-act-it-away group trying to play it straight in a hot tub with a topless Valerie Perrine, is so queer that if one were to come across a crystalled pink leprechaun face down in a rainbow sling at a Montreal bathhouse, snorting poppers and greased halfway up his back in liquified Crisco, you *might* be in the neighborhood.

Rent, don't buy this DVD, and play with care around small animals, impressionable children, and bi-curious clergy. You can't say you weren't warned.

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed.

The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon
