Imagine a talented cover band attempting to interpret songs that defy interpretation, and you'll have some idea what to expect from An All-Star Lineup Performing the Songs of Pink Floyd. It's vaguely similar to the idiosyncratic renditions of Floyd classics as performed separately by Roger Waters and David Gilmour during their post-Floyd concert tours, and it's guaranteed to leave you comfortably numb as you contemplate praiseworthy detours from the songs you know and love. It's easy to tune out the world while listening to any interpretation of the Floyd, especially since these all-star recordings are accompanied by cheap, cheesy graphics and video images that serve as useless on-screen filler. (You won't find any concert or studio coverage here, which is just as well since even faux-Floyd is best accompanied by one's own mental meanderings, or the self-generated equivalent of a '70s-vintage laser show.) The all-star lineup consists of respected session players and alumni from Kiss, Styx, Toto, Yes, Deep Purple, King's X, and others, and each track is (surprise, surprise) fairly well-executed and cleanly mastered in 5.1-channel stereo. As tribute recordings go, this isn't bad or good, it's just different (with no vocals to jar your familiarity, the guitar jam on the instrumental "Any Colour You Like" is arguably the DVD's highlight), so you'd have to be a really hardcore Floyd fan to give this thing a spin. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A Complete Ripoff.......2005-10-30
I concur with all the reviewers listed here....this DVD is a complete waste of time and money....as for "stunning visuals", the most stunning visual is the picture on the DVD box cover, and you will find nothing within the DVD itself to match, or even come close to its quality. My nine year old child, using basic 3D graphics/animation software, has produced more exciting visuals than this! Whoever thought that these visuals were stunning must have been smoking the wrong stuff....
Music? Oh, yes....there is some music on the disc, but it's been done better by other artists....
TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY AND CHEAT.......2005-10-21
Yes the music is excellent, but this is not a DVD
just a pathetic "screen saver" type images during music
don't be fooled by the thieves that realese this edition...
Buy the CD.
5.1.......2005-03-20
They really should have made a CD of that s..t. The worst thing for me is that nobody thought of people like me who do not own a 5.1 system! There simply is no stereo signal on this DVD. It is annoying, not to mention the "movie" running on the screen which is not more than a cheap joke, I expected to actually see the musicians performing the songs (no budget here)! I guess if you have a 5.1 system the music might sound good, I don't know....
Misleading.......2004-08-01
This tribute CD is very misleading on it's info on the back cover. It claims to contain "Stunning visuals...". Because of the very talented musicians involved in this venture, I was expecting state of the art computer animation similar to the exellent "Mind's Eye" series. Instead you get the most pathetic "visuals" I've ever seen. The music is ok but nothing earth shattering.
Try "Live at Pompei" or one of the 80's and 90's concert videos for a better experience.
