Nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, this is a first-rate thriller that, like Bertolucci's The Conformist and Coppola's The Conversation, opts for character development over car chases. The place is East Berlin, the year is 1984, and it all begins with a simple surveillance assignment: Capt. Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe in a restrained, yet deeply felt performance), a Stasi officer and a specialist in this kind of thing, has been assigned to keep an eye on Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch, Black Book), a respected playwright, and his actress girlfriend, Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck, Mostly Martha). Though Dreyman is known to associate with the occasional dissident, like blacklisted director Albert Jerska (Volkmar Kleinert), his record is spotless. Everything changes when Wiesler discovers that Minister Hempf (Thomas Thieme) has an ulterior motive in spying on this seemingly upright citizen. In other words, it's personal, and Wiesler's sympathies shift from the government to its people--or at least to this one particular person. That would be risky enough, but then Wiesler uses his privileged position to affect a change in Dreyman's life. The God-like move he makes may be minor and untraceable, but it will have major consequences for all concerned, including Wiesler himself. Writer/director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck starts with a simple premise that becomes more complicated and emotionally involving as his assured debut unfolds. Though three epilogues is, arguably, two too many, The Lives of Others is always elegant, never confusing. It's class with feeling. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description

This critically-acclaimed, Oscar®-winning film (Best Foreign Language Film, 2006) is the erotic, emotionally-charged experience Lisa Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly) calls "a nail-biter of a thriller!" Before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, East Germany's population was closely monitored by the State Secret Police (Stasi). Only a few citizens above suspicion, like renowned pro-Socialist playwright Georg Dreyman, were permitted to lead private lives. But when a corrupt government official falls for Georg's stunning actress-girlfriend, Christa, an ambitious Stasi policeman is ordered to bug the writer's apartment to gain incriminating evidence against the rival. Now, what the officer discovers is about to dramatically change their lives - as well as his - in this seductive political thriller Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) proclaims is "the best kind of movie: one you can't get out of your head."

3 out of 5 stars A Polite Dissent.......2007-09-17

This is a well-made, very well-acted movie. As a personal bonus to me, the German was Hochdeutsch enough for me to understand it. I was moved to fears and tears by moments of it. However, it is significantly flawed by unrealism of a Hollywood sort not far from James Bond or 24. The bugging of the writer's apartment, during a couple hours of absence, could not have been anything like the hi-tech system shown in the movie. I traveled in East Germany before the Fall of the Wall, and I worked in both Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Please don't suppose that I'm defending the Communist repression. But nobody there had the resources to employ two Stazis per artist full-time. Thankfully! And there were lots of people who lived their lives a lot less shadowed by Big Bad Brother than this movie implies. Okay, so it's just entertainment, right? But the need to be honest on both sides, the mutual GLASNOST, makes me think that entertainment shouldn't be able to over-influence people's historical understanding.
Did it deserve an Oscar? At least as much as most winners. But I like "Good-bye Lenin" a lot more.
On second thought, and with a little nudging, I'd give this flick four stars for artfulness, still withholding one for honesty.

5 out of 5 stars The Lives fo Others.......2007-09-16

This movie is a must-see for anyone who is concerned about the erosion of our civil liberties today. In the final analysis it is human beings that can and must make the difference.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Outing.......2007-09-16

This movie is about the stillness, the hollowness that comes when all joy, spontaneity, and happiness are sucked out of life. The only strength, but also great weakness of this film is an all encompassing remoteness that makes this hollowness palpable, as it intellectualizes this void, but also fails to make felt emotionally the utter ruin of several generations under communist rule. These stunted people are like fish in a drying pool of water that will soon forget how to breathe, but carry on anyway. Or kill themselves.

There are other weaknesses - the only female is poorly realized. It's as if the writer[s] felt they needed one, but were at a loss to as to what she would be like. Maybe they don't know any. She is presented as an unfaithful drug addict who has no idea where her own self-interest lies, but of whom we are repeatedly told is a great talent. Unfortunately they let us see her act and we see that she isn't very good at all. The same goes for the 'great playwright' whose great [and it would seem only] play seems no more than laughable, whose damning article in Der Spiegel is primitive. This is all forest for trees stuff - exactly what happens 99.99% of the time when writers write about writing. They really don't have a clue and think the whole process is a good deal more fascinating that it is. Regular folk make practically no appearance in this movie.

All that said, this movie isn't boring, although everything about it screams that it must be. Perhaps because few movies about this time period are available in the US [or I am just ignorant of them] and the novelty allows you to watch 132 mins of non-stop non-action. Even the torture scenes are boring - but this is merely German, not due to stilted writing. While Hollywood would have us believe the GDR was a terrorist state, this movie would have us believe it was toothless - hurting mainly willing victims. Maybe it was somewhere in-between?

Anyway, kudos to West Germany for having the courage to lift their stunted brethren out the which ever circle of Dante's hell they found themselves in. It could not have been easy. Maybe it still isn't.

Miss Potter walks that fine line between charming and cloying with pleasing sure-footedness. Apple-cheeked Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones' Diary) once again slips into a British accent to play writer/illustrator Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit. Potter, born into wealth, fought the disapproval of her high society mother to do something as crass as publish a book...and to fall in love with her publisher, Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor, previously teamed with Zellweger in Down With Love). Unfortunately, their love runs into something worse than upper-class stuffiness. Miss Potter skips through Potter's life a bit too briskly at times, but Zellweger's thankfully restrained performance, McGregor's infinite charm, and some beautiful shots of the English landscape keep the movie grounded and engaging. Also featuring a crackling supporting performance by Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) as Warne's sister Millie. --Bret Fetzer

Description

(Drama) The story of Beatrix Potter, the author of the beloved and best-selling children's book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", and her struggle for love, happiness and success.

A first class film destined to be come a classic. The character protrayal is very true to life and the controlled and creative use of animation is supurb. A wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie ever!!!!.......2007-09-16

Bought this movie for $5 and loved it! It's the best movie ever. Ewan McGregor is an awesome actor and loved his accent. I watched the movie over and over again. I just cant get enough. Great work by all the cast. Loved Beatrix mother she played her part well. Great for the whole family. Very pleased that it had no profanity. If you have not seen it you need to get it now!

5 out of 5 stars under rated Movie!!.......2007-09-14

This movie is so under rated!! It is wonderfully acted, a true story of love heart break and triumph!! if you are a hopeless romantic and a champion of the under dog you will love this movie- it is not, a story of bunnies and children's books!! Renee Zellwiger is an unbeleivable actress!!! Ewan McGregor once again shines in teaming up with Renee!!

4 out of 5 stars Rating of Miss Potter DVD overall.......2007-09-13

I enjoyed the beautifully filmed and acted story of Beatrix Potter and also the additional information on her life and legacy. However, the DVD as a whole loses one star (I am tempted to subtract two) for the annoying intrusion of 15 minutes of commercials at the start.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Potter is a touching true story.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this biography very much and have watched it several times. It is very nice to see a movie that does not have the violence that seems to be so popular with the public today. I dislike violence for violence's sake.

1 out of 5 stars Brad Waters-King is Right!.......2007-09-16

I think Brad here is the only person who speaks the awful truth about this awful turn of events for lifelong fans of Pink Floyd. Probably the last "real" Floyd album was Wish You Were Here, back when they wrote and played together, back when there was only the occasional session musician brought in for something special. Animals was all-Roger, as was The Wall and especially Final Cut. All Roger, not really Floyd, and it sucked. But what was even worse was Dave hiring a couple of dozen session musicians to play on what he had the gall to call a "Pink Floyd" album. But the sheeple bought it, as well as the tour, the next "Floyd" album, and yet another tour with no less than 1,000 session players crowding the stage. Oh yes, the shadows of Rick Wright and Nick Mason were up there too, but both had backup musicians playing their every note. Jon Carin was all over the place with his keyboards and backup vocals, leaving real Floyd member Rick Wright to just noodle around on his piano. Heart-breaking. At least David Gilmour doesn't call this thing Floyd anymore, I'll give him that. We Floyd fans have Roger Waters to thank for the 25-minute reunion in 2005, for he talked David into doing it. I watched that, was happy about it, and was hopeful about maybe a one-off full-set real-Floyd show later on, but David said that playing again with Rogers was "like sleeping with an ex-wife". And that was that for Pink Floyd. Too bad. David was at is best with Roger writing the lyrics, and Roger was never better than when he had David creating the music to make those lyrics go. But Roger never went on to call himself "Pink Floyd" on tour like David did. Only the whole band should be called by the band name, not when you have one or two founding members hauling along a whole boatload of wannabee Pips to play all the music ( Eagles, Chicago, Wishbone Ash all come to mind as complete frauds nowadays ). So, mostly this tour and DVD of David's suffer from a lack of meaning. Everybody was there to hear David and Rick - along with their 1,001 Pips - play old Floyd songs. They applauded politely during the interminable "On an Island" half of the show. What we Floyd fans want is simple: a tour or one-off show with four guys on the stage, no backup people, no Pips, none of it. Just the four greatly successful members of the once-great band Pink Floyd.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!!!.......2007-09-16

I saw the DVD release premier in Arlington, VA. WOW!!! David is as great as ever!! It was wonderful watching it on the theater screen. The whole showing was about two and a half hours long, but somehow the concert portion seemed kind of short. Or, maybe it was my perception - time flies when you are having a good time.

In the beginning, the band plays several songs from David's solo works with Crosby and Nash (I am not a big fan of david's solo music, so I don't know the titles... but they sounded great!). Then comes "Arnold Lane" featuring David Bowie, "High Hopes", "Shine On....", "Wish You Were Here", "Time", "Breath (reprise)", and then, the band ends the concert with amazing rendition of the masterpiece "Echoes". I got emotional from the beginning, but "Echoes" really did it - Wow! I don't know how to describe it... it is amazing! Richard Wright seems to have great fun with this piece incorporating more interesting variations on his keyboard. The pyrotechnique on stage is at it's peak during this piece, too.

Those of you who missed the concert like myself, get this DVD - it's a 'must' for any Pink Floyd/David Gilmour fan.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!.......2007-09-16

Well I just returned home from seeing the Northern States DVD showing at the IMAX theater and what an experience. There was even live linked Q&A via satellite with Gilmore and that put the icing on the cake. They even showed us the extras of the band behind the scenes while touring. We are true fans of Gilmore and what a great time they were all having doing this tour. I just ordered my copy of the DVD and can't wait to get it. There was a song that took us by surprise and really stood out and that was Echoes! What a treat that was. Enjoy all of you who purchase it! You wont be disapointed!

5 out of 5 stars WILL Be Great.......2007-09-08

I know this will be a great DVD. I've seen an audience tape from one of the New York shows and IT was great. David is without a doubt one of the true rock pioneers and to the fans that keep making Roger/David comments, please remember when you listen to all of the great Floyd albums that the majority of the time DAVID played (uncredited) bass on the studio albums. Listen to the incredible fretless bass work on "Hey You" from "The Wall". That is not Roger Waters. Guitar fans may recognize the strap Dave is wearing on this tour. It belonged to Jimi Hendrix, and was a birthday present to Dave from his wife. Can't wait!

1 out of 5 stars Tried to buy it based on great reviews.... but it isn't even out yet!.......2007-09-01

One of the reviewers wrote: "I love Roger Waters and David Gilmour for different reason but to come on here to Amazon and write reviews on anything involving David Gilmour in such a manner is insane"

Here's what's more insane: coming on here to amazon and writing reviews of a product that hasn't even been released. Come on people, wait until the DVD comes out, actually BUY it, actually WATCH it, THEN submit your impressions. Writing reviews based on how you hope it will turn out is just plain silly, not to mention misleading. I'm giving one star to even things out a bit.

Comprised of former members of Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell grew out of a 2006 reunion of post-Ozzy frontman Ronnie James Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Vinny Appice for the purpose of recording new tracks for a Sabbath compilation called The Dio Years. Heaven & Hell then toured, drawing deep from the Dio-era Sabbath catalogue. The masterful Heaven & Hell: Live from Radio City Music Hall is one result of that rekindled partnership, a two-hour, Gothic metal marathon filmed in 2007 before a thrilled New York City audience. Largely comprised of classic Sabbath material, the show unfolds with a deceptive ease. The seasoned bandmates play with graceful concentration even as they plunge into the maw of doomstruck power chords and grinding riffs, the wiry Dio stalking Heaven & Hell's swampy sound like some fusion of a crow and benevolent overlord. At times, it's impossible not to contradict oneself while trying to describe the group's intricate, paradoxical sound: "Children of the Sea," for instance, is somehow both a snaking and watery mystery. "E5150/After All (The Dead)" is equally epic and nonchalant. "I" is a show-stopping, nightmarish blues that leans toward the anthemic, while "Falling Off the Edge" is highlighted by a molten rhythm and Dio's taut vocal. This is a fine outing from a historic ensemble. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-09-18

Boring. Yes, you read correctly. From the 1st song on, this never picks up steam. Kind of like metal elevator music. Forget about rockin out unless you mean rockin chair out on the porch. Dio still has the voice and plenty of enthusiasm, its the MUSIC that doesn't deliver and considering that it's him, Iommi, Geezer and Vinny Appice, this is a FELONY! Mid tempo stuff all the way through, with the exception of Mob Rules. No Holy Diver. No Rainbow in the Dark. No Heaven and Hell. NO ANYTHING!!! I was going to sleep! I still can't believe it...Don't buy this unless you just are nuts over Dio and even then, I'd beware.

5 out of 5 stars Pure class...Top notch in every way!.......2007-09-15

All pistons were firing the night they shot this show as the band showcases their great songs from the past and present. DIO sounded fabulous and I loved how they warmed up the audience with the moody and powerful After All from Dehumanizer. When DIO unleashes his howl and they rip into Mob Rules the crowd just goes nuts. And why not? This historic band looks and sounds terrific and their stage set and lighting are brilliantly matched to the music. The second half of the show is even better than the first and Iommi just shreds on guitar. Lonely is the Word and Falling Off the Edge of the World were awesome. Geezer and Vinnie are also in fine form and perfectly in synch. We even get treated to an old fashioned drum solo from Vinnie, who still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Hats off to the director and video editor for allowing us to experience this show without cutting the action so fast. Beatifully planned out and put together. I'm 41, but felt like a teenager again jumping up after every song making the sign and howling, "YEAH!"

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST METAL.......2007-09-13

THIS CD IS THE BEST HEAVY METAL LIVE CD RELEASED IN YEARS BY ANY BAND
THE SOUND OF DIO,APPICE,IOMMI AND BUTLER IS VINTAGE HARD ROCK AT ITS FINEST. YOUNGINS TAKE NOT THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT AND DO IT WELL!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! True Metal is Back!!.......2007-09-10

Are you a fan of true heavy metal? Are you a fan of Black Sabbath with the great singer frontman Ronnie James Dio? If you are, buy this historic DVD. THis was the Dio led Sabbath's first show in the USA in 15 years. It was as if they never had separated. Dio's voice at 65+ is still one of the best rock and roll and heavy metal have ever heard. He can still hit the notes, high, low and menacing. This DVD is not only entertaining, but historic. We may never see this powerful lineup again on stage after this current Heaven and Hell tour. My suggestion is buy this DVD and if you get a chance to see them, DO IT!

Butler's bass work is fantastic, Appice is a master on the drums, and Iommi is a true metal god on the guitar. He is the master of heavy metal riffs. From the menacing and plodding After All ( The Dead) to the last track, the great Neon Knights, his talent shows through. One thing I enjoyed was that Dio is a true gentleman, unlike many modern metal singers,he shakes hands with the crowd, introduces the tracks, and gives his thanks and appreciation to the crowd. He related in the "Extras" section of the DVD that the fans are everything, and his and the rest of Sabbath's performance show it. Overall a great DVD.

5 out of 5 stars They hold the key to the gates of hell.......2007-09-04

Saw Heaven & Hell "Live" at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Australia on the 2nd of August. Their performance were brilliant and Dio's singing is worth the trip to hell. I am buying this DVD to re-live that moment in time. Give me Sabbath with Dio anytime.

5 out of 5 stars Remember where you were when..........2007-09-13

This is one of those events, whether musical or otherwise, that comes along once a generation. The result is that everyone remembers where they were when....

In my case, I was pottering around at home, blissfully unaware of anything, when my Dad phoned me and said "Turn on your TV - three guys are singing beautifully." I did, and the rest is history.

I'm a professional musician and can't pull out bits or say where people were better than others. Pavarotti was aureate and majestic, his great bulk filling the space, singing with his entire face....Jose Carreras wonderfully intense and sensitive, like the younger brother, keen to impress and seeking approval (later bravely to fight his own health battles)....and Domingo was mischievous and competitive.

Zubin Mehta held the whole event together brilliantly, part authoritative, part conspiratorial. In the magical setting of Caracalla, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

It was the best jam session ever, and if you haven't seen it, you've been deprived. If you have, you'll want it again.

5 out of 5 stars a Classic Concert.......2007-09-10

the three tenors and they capture so much together on stage. I bought this on CD years ago and I use to play it for my sunday dinners and I enjoyed the performances and the Chemistry of there voices. the Late Great Pavarotti,Carreras and Domingo were all great. there voices touched all in the audiences. this is one of those performances where you if you are a fan of the power of a Voice as a main Instrument then this Concert is a must for you. a must have of a Classic Performance.

5 out of 5 stars Please re-release this magnificent concert in High Definition!.......2007-08-07

The best opera performance ever! This needs to be re-released in high definition. It would be a showcase HD disc because the details of the orchestra on the wide Caracalla stage would show off the HD. I hope they shot this on film so we can get an excellent transfer but even if it was video, it will still exceed the standard DVD quality that we have now.

5 out of 5 stars PERHAPS THE GREATEST CONCERT DVD EVER!!!.......2007-05-21

This DVD surpasses the very best concert videos you'll ever view. Recorded in Italy, the scintillating performances will sweep you away to past times and far-off places. Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti--what can I say but BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!! How fortunate are we afficionados to have three maestros of the art to view for years to come, long after they're gone---we'll still have them, immortalized on DVD. They perform at a level that seemingly even surprises themselves. A MUST for any lover of opera, arias or great concert videos. BRAVO!!!

5 out of 5 stars Three Tenors.......2007-02-17

This DVD is superb. Luciano Pavarotti is at his best, and so are the other tenors. I have enjoyed watching it several times and never get tired of it. Wonderful to hear all the tenors at their best.

The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common sense--Ramtha's wiggier notions are not included--and would be easy to accept were it not being credited to a 35,000-year-old mystic from Atlantis. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars Great and lame.......2007-09-11

This documentary is enlightening at one level and disturbing at another. To be specific, I loved the light they shed on the difference between Newtonian physics and quantum mechanics. Furthermore, the idea that our bodies emit energy when we simply think and that we can influence our health among other things was fascinating. I take it as a challenge and a personal quest that started when I read the book The Biology of Belief. This quest is driven by the fact that my child has autism and that I want to foster a healthy subconscious in him to give him the power to choose his destiny someday. It also gives me perspective for some of the energy based treatments I am seeking such as CranioSacral therapy and why they improve behavior.

The part of the movie I hated was the spiritual propaganda in support of the Ramtha school. Nights/Ramtha contradicted her/himself. On the one hand by claiming that we are all divine, and on the other by stating that little carbon units could not sin against Almighty God. I don't think that is necessary or desirable that I stop believing in the creator of the universe to benefit from learning about energy and quantum mechanics. If anything, the possibility that our minds are so powerful just makes me feel more amazed at God's creation. It makes me feel that his creation is so perfect beyond our understanding.

The movie put down the idea of believing in a creator. It was especially offensive against the Christian God mocking the truth that your sins can be forgiven. And can anyone tell me if having the [...] girl flirt with the priest behind the scene where the obese man engages in eating is a subliminal message?

I would recommend this film to people that have a strong spiritual foundation; however if you are in an exploratory phase, please consider that the path of this movie is not the path of truth.

In the movie they talked about Emoto's water experiments focusing on how thought and intention can influence water crystals. This is a profound idea that gave me a new appreciation for Holy water and for the Eucharistic bread and wine.

1 out of 5 stars I'll tell you what the bleep we know........2007-09-09

We know better than to fall for thinly veiled astrology, that's what the bleep we know. When I hear that a film is about quantum mechanics, then find out later that it stars Ramtha the magic faith healer (who by the way failed to heal her late husband's HIV infection), I get very disappointed. It gets one star only because no stars is not an option.

1 out of 5 stars what the bleep down the rabbit hole.......2007-09-03

The blurb that I read before buying this indicated that it was about Quantum physics and mechanics, but it ended up being about personal interpretations of spirituality. I was very disappointed in this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and interesting.......2007-09-03

This is a magic film about life. I have already seen it twice, and shown it to friends. You can't go on living "the old way" after this.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Thirst Somewhat Satiated.......2007-09-01

When I first saw "What the Bleep Do We Know!?," the predecessor to this much longer three-disc version, in December of 2004, I hadn't been exposed to much Spiritual Cinema. Most of my spiritual journey had been through reading books and life experiences. They were also a great way to learn, but it took much longer!! "What the Bleep Do We Know!?" paved the way for me to enjoy other films in the Spiritual Cinema Genre like "Indigo" (2005),"The Secret" (Original Edition 2006), etc. However, I was still craving more of both scientific (specifically quantum mechanics) and spiritual (specifically formerly esoteric) information. So, I was elated when "What the Bleep!?-Down the Rabbit Hole" came out. It has nearly six hours of additional interviews and a cool "cutting-edge quantum viewing mode" where you can actually influence what you see next without touching the remote:) It really is all in your mind!!! These are a couple of the features that set it apart from the first movie. It's been something substantial, ironically in an immaterial way, to keep my spritual thirst somewhat satiated for quite a bit(e)now...lol...

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy from start to finish!.......2007-09-17

I have several of Andre Rieu's DVDs and while most of them are enjoyable, this one is the best so far, in my opinion. Unlike one of your previous reviewers, I thought the Harlem Gospel Choir was great and suited a concert recorded in New York at Radio City Music Hall very well. I also like to see the audience and all the featured soloists so I enjoyed the way it was filmed. You almost feel that you are there! The repertoire was a 10 ... all among my favourite pieces and well chosen to capture many moods. Everything was played beautifully with contagious enthusiasm. This is definitely a keeper. You can't help but feel great after playing it.

3 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-09-10

I saw part of the PBS broadcast and I ordered this DVD even though I had to wait several weeks for it. I was very disappointed. I enjoy watching and lisenting to Andre and his orchestra, not watching them take a back seat to the performers, soloists, etc. They (the singers and choirs)are all very talented, but I wanted to see and experience Andre. I have several of his earlier DVD's that do not rely on outside talents, and I enjoy them so much more. Andre, go back to your roots!

2 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu in New York 2006.......2007-09-10

I have almost everything Andre Rieu has and this was just passable. The Harlem folks are the ones that messed it up. Their music has no business being with Andre Rieu, who has class. I bought the DVD and am happy that I can just jump to the next track to avoid the Harlem music (if that is what you call music). Would I buy it again, well yes, but still with the opportunity to jump past some of the tracks. And Andre seemed to be "out of place here" and I think he was glad it was over. And there was only one song played by the little boy, disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu is always a good show!.......2007-08-13

I don't know how Clayton G. Anderson's panties got in such a twist! (The one star review!) I have to whole heartedly DISagree with his review! If you are an Andre Rieu fan, this DVD is another excellent showing by Mr. Rieu. What Clayton must not understand is how Andre loves not only beautiful music but also bringing it to the masses! To me the real show is seeing how much he enjoys bringing entertainment to his audiences!

I am an upbeat kind of person. I enjoy watching people have a good time. When you watch this DVD enjoy how much, not only the audience or Andre, but his orchestra enjoys the evening.

This is another beautiful show. I have all of them and enjoy them over and over again! (I really love Carla! LMAO)

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu, The Music Man.......2007-08-11

Taped in July 2006 at the Radio City Music Hall, this exuberant concert starts with a grand entrance set to "76 Trombones." The glittering show is occasionally interspersed with wonderful scenes of New York in Summer, with its amazing diversity and energy, and the "Godfather Theme" includes some sunny footage from Italy. The superb musicianship of Rieu (who now plays a 1732 Stradivarius), along with his unique and terrific Johann Strauss Orchestra and Chorus, always keep a light heart and a touch of humor while they perform pop and classical favorites. Guest artists are the Harlem Gospel Choir and 5 year old child prodigy Akim Camara.

The old time razzle dazzle aura of the Radio City Music Hall is a perfect setting for Rieu, who has perfected the fine art of schmaltz down to the last note, and never fails to delight us with his entertaining offerings. The concert includes the following numbers:
"76 Trombones"
With Akim Camara: "Dance of the Fairies"
With the Harlem Gospel Choir: "Amen," "I Will Follow Him," "Nun's Choir," "Oh Happy Day," "When the Saints Go Marching In"
"The Life of the Artist"
"Blaze Away"
"My Way"
"Godfather Theme"
"Singing in the Rain"
"The Washington Post"
"Music of the Night"
"Don't Cry for Me Argentina"
"Hallelujah Chorus"
"Radetzki March"
"A Bright Young Man"
"America the Beautiful"

Description

U2's PopMart Live from Mexico City is released on DVD for the first time on September 18th in two formats, a Special Limited Edition 2-DVD Deluxe Packaging version and a single disc, Standard version. Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart Tour opened in its "spiritual home", Las Vegas on April 25, 1997. All trash and kitsch, PopMart introduced a giant mirrorball lemon, a 100 foot cocktail stick - complete with olive, and the works of Lichtenstein, Warhol and Haring, to a live rock audience: a production experience never quite seen before. Filmed at the Foro Sol Autodromo in Mexico City on December 3, 1997, PopMart Live from Mexico City was directed by David Mallet and first released on video the following year. Both the video and audio have been digitally remastered and the DVD includes a brand new 5.1 surround mix in DTS and Dolby Digital of the concert. The single disc, Standard version will contain only the concert material and the Special Limited Edition 2-DVD version will feature on the 2nd bonus disc, nine previously unreleased live audio and video tracks, four documentaries, a PopMart tour visuals montage, and DVD-ROM extras.

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Lemon (YUM!).......2007-09-14

The huge screen behind them with the racing comic book imagery gives me a headache after watching more than two songs, but an extraordinary tour from an extradinary band. You know you're a great rock band when what you considered your worst failures are still spectacularly awesome and loved by millions! Rock on, boys!

5 out of 5 stars I was in this concert.......2007-09-13

I was in this concert, I was only 20 years old and I remember that in many radio segments saids that U2 didn't going to play that day because they had a sereius problem one day before with the son of the president of Mexico, but they didn't cancel the concert and played one of the best concert on they history.

This DVD really doesn't have price

5 out of 5 stars U2 Live at their Best.......2007-09-12

Great show live. Any U2 show live is a great one but don't miss this. This album and tour was amazing. Listen to PLEASE and it is hauntingly reminiscent of 9-11's tragic events. The songs are more serious than the production with a huge arch, mirrorball lemon, the tinyt nun that has since disappeared, towering screens, an olive....Hard to beleive this all took place 10 years ago. Nice to re-live a concert that truly rocked my world. No disappointments here.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for U2 Fans.......2007-09-01

There are so many reasons to recommend this--I can't believe it's finally on DVD!

The Pop Mart tour and album was incorrectly derided by some critics--and even the band apparently--as a failed experiment. Wrong. That album was some of their coolest music ever, and the tour, while it started rough, by the time of this show is just monster (no pun intended). This BTW was the largest video screen every constructed; after the tour it was sold off in pieces to sports stadiums and the like.

Granted, it you don't like the "ironic" U2 and songs like "Discoteque" you'll probably hate the "lemon" part which is totally Spinal Tap (although that was sort of the point though). Too bad, because right after that song they do THE definitive version of "If You Wear That Velvet Dress," which far surpasses the recorded version.

The show opens with a seamless segue from "Pop Music" on the P.A. into "Mofo." "Mofo" was an interesting, if not fully realized track from the album but here it absolutely kills in a different arrangement. Just like "Elevation" live blows away the recorded version, so it goes with "Mofo."

The sound's great, the band's tight, the crowd is absolutely bonkers. For videos I rank it up there with Live from Sydney (Zoo TV) as their best.

Sure by this point, after Zoo TV, U2 fans had pretty much had enough of the "irony" phase and thankfully they moved on.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE FOR U2.......2007-08-24

THIS CONCERT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST PRODUCTIONS EVER...
A MUST FOR EVERY U2 FAN AND FOR ANY FAN OF REAL MUSIC!!

Saturday Night Live: The Complete First Season boxed set is much more than the sum of its parts, in fact it's one of the most significant TV DVD releases yet. This isn't just an 8-disc set featuring 24 episodes of live sketch comedy, it's a big box of zeitgeist. This really is the complete first season, mostly uncut and complete with every musical act and short film intact (a few bumpers and transitions were removed to make it flow better on DVD). The first broadcast aired on October 11, 1975, hosted by George Carlin and featured musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian. At first, things seem a little raw: Carlin's opening monologue is painfully unfunny, Chase's first shot at the seminal "Weekend Update" is amusing but sloppy, and much of the cast seem to be holding back. But the groundwork is all there, and soon in subsequent episodes you can see it all start to come together (especially with John Belushi who lets his simmering intensity out to tremendous effect), proving that the first episode simply belies the historic impact the show would come to have on popular culture. Here you'll find the first airing of some of the many skits that stayed famous over the years: the Land Shark, Samurai Hotel, Chevy Chase's opening pratfalls and the impersonations of Gerald Ford which would spin off into the proud SNL tradition of presidential parodies.

The set is a very entertaining look at a significant point in TV and American cultural history. It is so 1975, but that's a major part of its appeal: did Chevy Chase really used to look that young? Did a young George Carlin really used to look so old? Check out Abba in those disco jumpsuits. And if you're a fan of The Muppets, seeing them here on late-night TV making jokes about getting drunk will blow your mind. Younger fans may not fully understand just how groundbreaking this show was at the time. For example, Richard Pryor hosting the seventh episode, which includes the famous "Word Association" sketch. Back then, to have a comedian of Pryor's reputation joking about drugs, sex, and race on live TV was a tremendous risk (it's also gratifying to see the obvious effect he had on the next generation of comics like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock), and it helped established the show's cache as unpredictable and edgy. The DVD set is full of moments like this and, like the show itself, it has its ups and downs. Watching hosts like Rob Reiner (back when he was still in his "Meathead" days from All in the Family), Madeleine Kahn, and Desi Arnaz work their comedy chops with the cast are high points. Whereas the infamous Louise Lasser episode, which is known for being among the worst episodes in the show's history… not so much. Still, it's entirely to Executive Producer Lorne Michaels's credit that it's included here. It's a tremendous collection of everything that gave birth to Saturday Night Live, and the seed of what SNL would become, spawning many movies (not to mention a few catch-phrases), launching the careers of many great comedians, and providing TV viewers with some of the most famous, and infamous, moments in broadcast history. And it all started right here.

The set is packaged in a well-designed, sleek fold-out digi-pack with every episode listed on the sleeves, with hosts, musical guests, and the original air date. The special features include a rare look at the cast members' original screen tests, and a 1975 TV interview with the cast. --Daniel Vancini

Description

Nicknamed the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players," the original cast of Saturday Night Live ignited a comedy revolution with their mix of irreverent characters and satirical impressions of political figures and pop culture icons. From the premiere of this groundbreaking sketch comedy show on October 11, 1975, live from historic Studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner launched themselves into instant stardom and were often referred to as "The Beatles of Comedy." Created by Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, Saturday Night Live has had the cultural impact and relevance that few shows can claim. Nowhere else can you see the complete first season of SNL, featuring hosts George Carlin, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, Elliott Gould, Candice Bergen, or original musical performances by Simon & Garfunkel, ABBA, Patti Smith, Jimmy Cliff, and Carly Simon. And if you're curious as to how the original cast was hired, check out the DVD bonus features, which include the screen tests of each performer.

3 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as funny as when I first saw it.......2007-09-17

What a disappontment! I saw most of these as a kid, but watching them now in light of their legendary status only highlights how much memory can be obscured by nostalgia.
MAYBE one in three skits is funny here, and the other two are usually painful. If ever there was a case for a best-of tape, this is it. You could fit all the truly funny stuff on two discs, max.
The nostalgia factor is high; it's great to see Steve Martin, Belushi, Aykroyd, Carlin, etc etc in their prime...but man, they did a lot of UNfunny stuff here too!
By disc two we were looking at each other and saying, "We thought this was funny back then?"
Well, we were kids.
Now that I'm all grown up, almost, it falls flat most of the time. Simply stupid at points, you start asking yourself, how many more discs do I have to sit through?
Nice as a nostalgia trip, but kind of disturbing in that it makes you question how much of what you remember as great from your early years is really just crap seen through the rose-colored lens of time.
Yes, the good stuff is occasionally brilliant (the final Star Trek episode stands out as still hilarious), and it was ground-breaking in its era. Now, however, much of it just seems lame and childish.
Unless you have 20 hours to waste, just watch the best-ofs. I kept expecting to see some old gem of a skit I'd missed or forgotten; I think I saw 30 minutes' worth at best.
I have much higher hopes for the Bill Murray seasons. I remember him being much more reliably funny than anyone else except Phil Hartman and Will Ferrell in the history of this show...but then again, I might be editing those memories...

5 out of 5 stars SNL Memories MUST BUY.......2007-09-11

They took all of the best moments form the fist seasons and put it on the first tape. It was like walking down memory lane. You get to see all of your favorite comedians, movie stars and musicians from the 70's. If you are an SNL fan young or old, it's a must buy!

3 out of 5 stars One attempt at an objective review........2007-09-07

I didn't watch the first season when it was first telecast, mainly because I was just a bit too young to get it, being in my early teens. The "classic" SNL that I remember watching was probably a season or two beyond this, so when I started watching this season it was really unexplored territory for me. So, here's the upside and the downside.

First the upside:

You get a lot for the money: the entire season -- everything -- for a reasonable price.

The nostalgia factor alone is worth something.

There are a lot of performances by great musical acts of the time period.

Now the downside:

It's not nearly as funny as I thought it would be. I actually hit the "fast forward" through a lot of it. This show took some time to hit it's stride. The good news is that it is all there, so I can pick and choose what I consider to be the "best of".

The video is a bit hard to watch some times. It looks like whoever mastered this DVD just took the videos out of the vaults and dumped them to the DVD. It doesn't look like any restoration or enhancement was attemped. So, it looks like old video, not that sharp "live" image you watched on your Sony Trinitron TV in 1975.

The bottom line is that it is what it is, and there's a lot of it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-08-26

You get 8 single sided discs well packaged with 24 episodes. These are very good transfers despite what some people said. The first few episodes are a little dark but that was just the lighting in the studio.

The first 5 episodes you will find more music-boring albert brooks films and just a taste of whats to come but this was the beginning of what was to become the best comedy troupe ever IMO.

Starting with episode six, the lily Tomlin episode, the show really started clicking and taking form. I truely believe Miss Tomlin showed the Not Ready for Primetime Players what they could do if they just let themselves do it. She gives an outstanding performance.

Episodes 6-7-8 and 9 have all been very good but thats as far as I have made it yet.

I will not rush watching this as it's like a fine wine and I plan to enjoy the taste.

I don't remember ever watching these episodes before and feel priviledged to get the opportunity to see where it all started.

If you are a fan of the Original Not Ready For Primetime Players this is an absolute must have.

I am salivating at the prospect of getting seasons 2 thru 5.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-08-16

This is an excellent way to get in touch with the 70's ... to actually get a feel for where the country was headed then.

SNL also changed the way 'stars' were made. The NRFPT players held their own with the studio-made actors, and the industry was never the same again.

A great video collection!

5 out of 5 stars Energy plus!!.......2007-09-06

I've always enjoyed Springsteen's music, especially live (he gives great concert), however...I had not heard of this DVD when I bought it. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised. A lot of traditional folk songs and some newer pieces done with more energy and original idea than I thought possible. The sessions band is as tight and talented a group as you're likely to hear.
You'll be smiling and dancing in front of your screen and the better your sound system, the better the result. Very well produced and outstanding audio quality. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars Musical Genius.......2007-09-03

I've never enjoyed a conert DVD so much. Springsteen explores several genres with passion and style. Most especially, he drags long-dead-and-forgotten folk music into the 21st century. The Sessions band is absolutely the best gathering of wonderful musicians ever for a concert. And the whole experience is heightened by their obvious respect for each other, their music and the audience. The Springsteen/audience interactions are part of the fun of this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars American music at its best.......2007-08-20

this is an intense fun concert interpreting great american roots music with plenty of enthusiasm, even though patti scialfi tries to hog too much air time, it does nothing to spoil the show. Greg Liszt was impressive with the banjo. Erie Canal is my favorite song.

Having missed seeing Bruce in Verona last year because of an early flight out of Venice the next day and a lousy Italian train service - this DVD was a highlight.
The love of life and music was clearly evident in this wonderful gig in Dublin and the foot stomping soul of the band was evident in every track. If you don't buy another DVD all year, splash out, enjoy and play it loud. Bruce living life to the full!

5 out of 5 stars Bruce, The Bandleader.......2007-08-13

I've been a longtime fan of Mr. Springsteen's music - I first saw him at a college gym in South Philly in Feb of 74. I had just gotten my driver's license and loved his first two albums, so me and my friends went to the show. I came away a lifelong convert. Little did I know I'd still be touting my devotion and exuberance to his music 33 years later... unimaginable.

I bought the studio version, The Seeger Sessions, so I felt this would be redundant, but it's anything but. This concert and collection epitomizes an incredibly talented committed artist, who's unafraid to take chances. It's the culmination of a year of touring and evolving with this smokin' band and this sizzling big sound. Some might say what's risky about singing old folk tunes, but just think about what a flop it could have been! Instead, we have an eyewitness view of an artist who can reinvent and passionately perform songs that have long been forgotten, in an incredibly exciting way. Watching Bruce lead this collection of musicians with arrangements from the heart is truly a joy to behold. It's obvious he's having a helluva lot of fun, and we get to go along for the ride! He mixes a number of his own songs in, also rewritten and presented in a new way, only reinforcing that Bruce is of the same cloth as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and other legends of American music. He continues to outdo himself with each album and this is no exception. I'm so glad I got my copy.

Thanks Bruce! You're the best!
