One of the best films of 1994, To Live is a bold, energetic masterpiece from Zhang Yimou, the foremost director from China's influential "fifth generation" of filmmakers. Continuing his brilliant collaboration with China's best-known actress Gong Li (their previous films include Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern), Zhang weaves an ambitious tapestry of personal and political events, following the struggles of an impoverished husband and wife (Ge You, Gong Li) from their heyday in the 1940s to the hardships that accompanied the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. They raise two children amidst a Communist regime, surviving numerous setbacks and yet managing, somehow, to live. Both intimate and epic, Zhang's film encompasses the simplest and most profound realities of Chinese life during this controversial period, and for their honesty, Zhang and Gong Li faced a two-year ban on future collaborations. To Live is a testament to their art, transcending politics to celebrate the tenacity of ordinary people in the wake of turbulent history. --Jeff Shannon

Worth Watching..........2007-05-12
I'm a Gong Li fan, so naturally I'm watching all of her movies. Although I've enjoyed some of her other ones more (like "Zhou Yu's Train"), I enjoyed this one more than some others as well (like "The Story of Qiu Ju" and "Ju Dou"). It educates the viewer about several decades of Chinese history while focusing on one family's experiences through life. The viewer can either relate to the characters as husband & wife, and/or mother & father, and/or children & siblings. The viewer may also relate to some of the characteristics/emotions on display--like one's submissions to and obliviousness during addiction, one's willingness to sacrifice for others, one's guilt for not being able to do better by your family or for your family, one's sorrow after another's death...the list goes on. Overall, it's a good movie, and I'd watch it again.
Maybe you can feel what I didn't.. I didn't feel a Masterpiece.......2007-03-16
The movie tells a tale of a family living through troubled times, during the communist uprising in mid 20th century China. To Live, literally expresses every human emotion known to man. It can and will, touch your heart one moment and drown it the next. But honestly, I couldn't relate to the characters. It lacked the necessities for me to empathize with the people in the film. I saw the drama, but I didn't feel it. I won't go as far as to say the film sucked, because it didn't. It was good, but not a masterpiece. The first 30 min were far from captivating, I wasn't drawn in one bit. When the movie grabbed me, I'd literally blink, and I was already waiting for the tempo to pick up again. I'm 20/m, open-minded, but this film just didn't do for me. If you buy it, judge it for yourself and post a review for future audiences.
If you want to buy a MASTERPIECE of a foreign film, buy Tae Guk Gi: Brotherhood of War. That movie will steal your heart and i guarantee you won't be able to tear away from it.. and YOU WILL cry.
A Decent Film In Storytelling: Worth A Look!.......2007-01-07
"To Live," does not hold the same appeal for me as it once did in the past. However, I do recommend viewers to at least take a look at this film. The films narrative deals with the lives of Fugui and Jiazhen, a husband and wife with two children, as well as Fugui's mother. The time period is from the 1940s up to the 1980s. Because Fugui has a gambling problem the family loses everything: house and possessions, which splits the family apart. It is a time when the Chinese Nationalist's and Communist's are battling for control of China. Further, the film deals with the social upheaval that is afffecting the lives of many Chinese. Although the film never criticizes the changes incurred by Mao Tse Tung, just the view of the how people's lives were affected accomplishes this task very well.
And although this film does not look deeply enough at the changes taking place in China in the chaotic 40s, 50s, and 60s with Mao's reforms and its affects on the people; I don't think that this is what the director had in mind. Especially regarding the films main protagonists. On later viewings I realized that there was much missing in the film which could have made this a truly great film. As the viewer, one witnesses the changes occuring in China, but the real horror of Mao's reforms are put on the backburner. There is social upheaval occuring, but it appears tame in comparison to actual events. However, Fugui and his pregnant wife are the films main protagonists, and the film is about their life in this new China. With poverty now a way of life, Fugui decides to work at a puppet troupe. After the birth of their first child [a son] Jiazhen returns to Fugui, however, civil war has broken out causing Fugui to leave for the fight. The rise of Mao changes everything for these two individuals in the films narrative.
And even though they have suffered [as many other did too] they never complain. The film never throws Mao at the viewer, but he is left in the background of the film. However, this was a very clever use of directing in order to tell the story of these two individuals. This is a decent film of human tragedy, which I only feel could have been so much more. I recommend the film to those viewers [rent it first] who are not familiar with this period in Chinese history. This is not a propaganda film, but a film about those caught in the unheaval of turbulent times. Recommended. [Stars: 4.5]
One of Gong Li's Best.......2006-11-19
I must admit, I didn't expect too much from this movie when I bought it, despite the good reviews. To me, the movie starts off rather slow as well (and kind of comedic) with the centerpiece of the story being the gambling.
It doesn't take long for the story to really take shape and unfold into one of the best movies I have ever seen. Gong Li is amazing.
You won't regret buying this.
One of the BEST film's I've ever seen.......2006-10-20
This film is amazing. The story is strong and gets its point across like no other I have ever seen. It shows the negative aspects of the communist regime without getting preachy and without losing the positive aspect, therefore making sure the story is not one sided. Please take note: this is an extremely sad movie. If you cry easily, stay away. I loved it. The acting is fantastic, especially Gong Li, who stuns with her emotion, but that is always a given with her. The director, Zhang Yimou, is truly a genius. He makes this story heartbreaking and pointed. I can see that this title is not available except by marketplace but trust me when I say that it is worth the price. It's fantastic.

On the edge of my seat!.......2007-09-10
Gong Li seems to be forwever beatiful, and her acting is superb in this production. In my opinion, she is "Catherine Deneuve" of the east.
A masterpiece.......2007-08-29
An outstanding masterpiece that arcs across several decades of Chinese history in the 20th century. A sweeping tale of the turbulent times, splendidly enacted by an outstanding cast and shepherded by a brilliant director. It is the "Gone with the Wind" of China.

From Robin Seymour's "Lively Spot" show of 1970 the group lip-synchs "Looking at You" and "American Ruse." From 1967's Conversations In-Depth, the band plays a mind-numbing version of "Black to Comm," replete with Nehru jackets and mod haircuts. Three selections of silent footage shot by the U.S. Dept. of Defense culled from the National Archives. The middle section is the MC5 being observed while playing the 1968 Democratic National Convention protest festival. Not Bad Until the Real Thing Comes Along.......2007-01-07
First off this was done for money. Period. If the Levi's logo wasn't enough, Brother Wayne has come out and said so himself. The labor of love comes in with the supporting acts. People tend to forget that Ian Astbury provided vocals for the Rob Tyner tribute all those years ago and no one bitched then. The Hellacopters have kept that "hugh energy" flame going along with Radio Birdman for years so please don't quibble about their cred. Even the bonus bit isn't bad, since it seems ol' Leni filmed alot of this with no sound (see "Kick out the Jams" you need an update). This is not bad until "A True Testimonial" gets a real release but I'm sure the other film of that time, "Ten for Two" may get released first as Yoko is more likely to kick than Wayne. But, in a few years there may not be enough folks around to care.
Worth the money and then some........2005-04-16
A real thrill to see Davis, Kramer and Thompson back together again. It is obvious what a labor of love it was for all involved. I particularly enjoyed Skunk, Shakin' Street, Poison and Rocket Reducer No. 62. If you can get your hands on a copy of MC5: A True Testimonial (there are a few out there) I would recommend it also.
Brother Wayne Kramer, Dennis Thompson, & Michael Davis.......2004-12-29
Packed to the seams with special guests, archived footage, and content, Sonic Revolution is a spectacular dvd; it's only fault coming from the slightly weak audio mix that is presented for the concert aspect. Through repeated watching, it'll grow on you, just as the original MC5 should have, (if you're unitiated get up, run to the store, and pick up their revolutionary debut, Kick Out The Jams immediatly.)
On loan from his band the Hellacopters, Nicke Royale rips it up on the second guitar, (filling in for the unfortunatly deceased Fred Smith,) and gives more than fair vocal offerings to "Gotta Keep Movin'" and "American Ruse." Lemmy from the legendary Motorhead puts his vocal styling into a ripping version of "Sister Anne," while Dave Vanian of The Damned, a long time fan of The MC5, boogies and tries his passionate and energetic best hand, (often with sucess,) at "Tonight," "Looking At You," and "High School," as Ian Astbury fronts what is perhaps the climax of the show when he puts his soaring energy and gold-plated lungs into the helm of a stirring "Kick Out The Jams."
Right now it's time to...kick out the jams.

Perfection.......2004-09-10
This is the smartest 20 bucks I've spent in a long, long time. The band commentary over the home movie stuff is incredible and far more honest than anything I've ever heard or seen them do, and I've purchsed everything available on the group. There are no false claims of objectivity by producers looking for acclaim on this release, which makes it all the better. All first-person comments are from surviving band members who obviously know what they're saying without being manipulated. Good good stuff and excellent editing. The 1968 Defense Dept. footage from the convention is silent, but the way it is presented here is effective. The bonus TV program is worth the money alone.
A botched attempt.......2004-07-23
This concert performance is plagued by uneven sound, an uneven performance and more than a few missing songs. By reading the liner notes there were more songs recorded for this DVD, but somehow they didn't manage to make the final cut. The notes say technical problems, but judging by the performances it could very well be that the MC5 was so bad that they couldn't use the footage.
It's shame this legendary band didn't record one of its current American shows for a DVD. That group was more well-rehearsed, but either touring group doesn't live up to the MC5's legendary status.
The extras on this DVD are good to watch once. Other than that they provide no extended commentary on the history of the band.

Customer Reviews:
George Nu-Metal is over it's ok to tune back to E!!!!!.......2007-02-02
Ok everyone WAKE UP! Let korn do their thing with tuning to C, EVERYONE else get back to standard pitch. THIS IS GARBAGE! George is tuned way to low again and it sounds like mud.
REvolting is more like it...........2006-04-04
When I saw this in the store I had to pick it up since I am a major George Lynch fan. Have been since the 80's with Dokken and his hair metal days. Couldn't wait to pop it in the dvd player and see George blaze it out on stage. Man, was I ever disappointed in the quality in both video and audio.
How could this be so bad? Let me first start off by the video quality: terrible. It looked like some fan shot it with their own handheld camcorder from about 20 feet from the stage. It said on the back of the dvd that it was professional shot. Right. The videographer must've been on pot that day because I could've done a better job. Video clarity was mediocre at best because a lot of the image is grainy and was poorly lit with the lighting on stage. For some reason the image looked "stretched" to fit a widescreen format but forgot to include the black bars on top so while it fits my 4:3 tv, it looked like the guys were too elongated onscreen.
Audio: hmmm.. 5.1? sounds more 2.0 to me. I had to turn up my 5.1 system to really hear it and I have lots of concert dvds to compare it to. Very subpar audio quality.
Content: Well. It does feature George on guitar. That's about as far as my enthusiasm goes. George really didn't do anything spectacular as far as I'm concerned. His guitar sounded muddy and not that great if you asked me. Then again it just could've been the recording quality so if you were there live, it probably sounded badass. I have the Dokken live dvd in Japan and it is a hundred times better than this so I'd recommend that before considering this POS. Heck, even the audience looked comatose!! They could've been mannequins for all I care, very lifeless and bored to death. The one thing I did LIKE is the studio cuts with George talking about his sound, gear, and past. But that's not enough to justify this price of admission. Luckily this dvd came with an audio cd of the concert so I can RElive this snoozer of a concert whenever I feel like taking a nap.
Sorry, but I think I'll relive my hair metal days with Dokken.
Like a old Japanese film..........2005-12-01
just received my DVD in the mail and couldn't wait to check it out! I am a musician and I was very excited to finally check out one of my all time guitar heroes up close.
But... I am extremely disappointed with the editing of the live footage. It is so far off time/sync that it looks like an old Japanese film. What the hell were these people looking at? I'll sell this on ebay.
I have done a little video editing with Adobe Premiere.. I know I could have done a way better job at editing this footage together.. George, I hope you sued these guys!
George Lynch plays in Lynch Mob, right?.......2005-06-22
I was a big Dokken and Lynch Mob (1st 2 CDs) fan, and I was really looking forward to this DVD. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed.
First of all, with this being Lynch's band I wanted to see him playing, but I'd say he's only featured on-camera in about 20% of the footage, and it's often dark. They don't even have a camera on the right side of the stage until about 8 songs into the performance! But, if you are a big Esposito fan, you'll be thrilled because you get extreme closeups of him singing backing vocals that are barely audible. There's also plenty of Lynch Mob's second-best vocalist Robert Mason singing as well. George is using an ESP baritone for the entire show, so everything is much deeper, which isn't really appealing to me because it loses that biting edge that he had with Dokken and Lynch Mob (let's pretend "Smoke This" doesn't exist.)
Another huge disappointment is that the audio track and video aren't synced in some spots. It's a really sloppy job. The extras are very weak and short.
Oops!!!!!.......2005-02-02
I finally received this item from Amazon.com, and the manufacturer put 2 copies of disk 2 (the CD), and NO copy of disk 1 (the DVD)...

There was a time when Pato could ram the dance..now it seem like he just want to ram up virgins under 16...Warning for parents..DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DAUGHTERS ALONE WITH THIS GUY...HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING ADVANTAGE OF YOUNG GIRLS FROM COAST TO COAST...One day the law will catch up with all entertainers who play on the innocence of their fans...the ones that get caught up in the music, and are left wondering what happened...best stay out of the US..They prosecute for the things you like to do, Mr Banton..

Watch Out UFC...the girls are movin' in!.......2005-04-27
Wow...just...wow!
I watch a lot of MMA and I came away impressed with the fighting on this DVD. These women are the real deal!
While the venue is small, the fights aren't. The way the DVD is put together, it starts with the weakest fight and works it way up to the final. Even the first fight has some good moments. All the girls know more than one discipline, which makes for some good action. Boxing, striking, submissions, wrestling...these women do it all!!
If you're a MMA fan, this DVD is definitely worth checking out.
My God!.......2004-08-06
Riveting! I couldn't believe this DVD was so amazing! One of our dorm mates bought it because she had been boxing lately. She put it on the big screen during finals and by the end of the DVD about 15 of us guys had gathered around yelling as these women fighters go at it. Each fight gets more hardcore. By the end of the DVD there were 15 guys standing around with beers just yelling at the screen. I hope this guy comes out with another installment. The craziest part was some of the girls in the DVD were really hot but damn could they throw down. As a dude who has some fighting skill I would be hesitant to fight the Mexican grappler, the tall Brunette or that Red head at the end. You'll see what I'm talking about!
Have fun and warn your neighbors about the yelling and screaming.
BAD GIRLS!!!!.......2003-11-20
THIS DVD WILL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY!!! THESE WOMEN ARE THE BEST FEMALE FIGHTERS I HAVE SEEN!!THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE BETWEEN THE WOMEN AND THE MEN BECAUSE THESE WOMEN FIGHT JUST HAS HARD IF NOT HARDER THAN THE MEN AND THAT SIMPLY BECAUSE HAS FEMALE FIGHTERS THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE TO THE PUBLIC AND THE M.M.A. INDUSTRY..SO WHEN YOU SEE THEM FIGHT THEY ARE EXPLOSIVE!! THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE DVD IS THAT THE FIGHTS ARE FAST BUT STILL VERY GOOD..
who says women can't fight.......2003-06-22
Hook N Shoot took a big gamble by having the first ever all women's MMA card in North American history. After watching this DVD, you will have to agree that the gamble paid off big time. 7 fights in all with only one going past the first round. People who say women MMA fighters have no skill will be forced to shut their mouths after watching this event. All 14 women show amazing heart and they show some pretty impressive skills levels too. The main event has Debi Purcell, my favorite female fighter, taking on Chris Van Fleet. An excellent event that would be a shame if missed.
