5 out of 5 stars AN IRWIN ALLEN MOVIE THATS FUN.......2007-09-15

you just have to love irwin allen films, and this film the lost world from 1960 is just a fun gem to watch.starring david hedison, michael rennie, claude rains, fernando lamas, jill st. john.with a cast like this what can go wrong.the so called dinosaurs are just lizards with added wardrobe horns and so on.the movie is very entertaining with the brilliant cast.all in all what makes this a special treat is the print is just absolutely gorgeous.the 1925 movie is an added bonus worthy of its version of the lost world and a damn good one for a 1925 movie silent but entertaining as well.so treat yourself to a fun dinosaur movie the special 2 discs the lost world,it's worth the money and time to add to any irwin allen collection of pure adventure films........

4 out of 5 stars Four Star DVD, Two Star Movie.......2007-09-13

"How bad can it be?" asked one reviewer here. The answer is "Pretty bad." This is probably the worst adaptation done of Conan-Doyle's classic novel, primarily because producer/director Irwin Allen's approach was so juvenile, but I doubt the movie was meant to be more than a Saturday matinee feature. It looks and feels cheap, with lizards and baby alligators used as stand-ins for dinosaurs. One of the effects technicians was -- unbelievably -- Willis "King Kong" O'Brien, who also worked on the classic 1925 silent version of "Lost World." This must have been a very depressing experience for him. I know that one of the film's star's, David Hedison, has said several times that he was depressed making this movie. All that said, if you saw this as a small kid, you probably have fond nostalgic memories of it, and it can be enjoyed on a purely kitsch level, though you really have to be masochistic to get into this sort of cinematic schlock. Surprisingly, Fox video has done a really nice job presenting this feature on DVD. The anamorphic transfer of the Cinemascope film looks as good as it possibly could and the old-fashioned 4-channel stereo sound is nicely rendered in 4.0 Dolby Digital. The extras include all that any fan of this movie could want, with the exception of interviews with surviving cast members and a running commentary by someone who cares -- but perhaps that would have been asking too much? Instead you get an interactive pressbook --a very nice feature that Fox has just staring including on its recent library reissues --, a rather lame little "featurette" from the period, an ad and concept art gallery, and a still gallery that plays for an incredible -- or perhaps interminable? -- nine minutes! And, of course, the original theatrical trailer. (This is a 2-disc release. The second disc contains the silent, yet superior, 1925 version. I can not attest as to that discs qualities because, you see, I merely rented disc one from Netflix. No way I'd buy this Irwin Allen "masterpiece." Sorry, but I'd rather spend my money on something else.) But wait, there's more... a vintage Fox Movietone Newsreel segment showing the NYC premiere at the Warner Theatre in July 1960. A smiling David Hedison is shown signing autographs for an audience of -- what else? -- prepubescent kids and their moms. Hedison looks really happy to be there. Now that's great acting!

5 out of 5 stars The Lost World.......2007-09-03

I have always loved Sir Arthur Canon Doyle's best known works, the Sherlock Holmes stories. My favorites among these are the Universal Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Though these are not true to Doyle's original writings, Rathbone and Bruce did an outstanding job in their respective roles. The 1960 version of The Lost World is in my opinion the best. It does differ from Doyle's original novel. What makes this film great is the excellent performances by Claude Rains, Michael Rennie and David Hedison. Rains is a legend with such masterpieces under his belt as Sir John Talbot in the Wolfman and the title role as The Phantom of the Opera. David Heddison will go on to a very successful role as the Captain of Seaview in Irwin Allen's TV Series in Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

4 out of 5 stars No Comparison.. just enjoy..made in 1960 not 2007.......2007-08-26

When I was 7 years old I thought that this was indeed the greatest movie so far..except the 7th voyage of sinbad. How can we compare a vintage movie from 1960 to the special effects we have today. At 54 years old now. who cares that the horns are pasted on the lizards and all that. Enjoy this movie for it's escapism and adventure.I wonder sometimes how anyone can enjoy a movie picking it apart all the time. I guess you had to be there in 1960.

3 out of 5 stars A Favorite .......But Not Great.......2007-08-09

A true Cinemascope film, hopefully the DVD release by Fox (unlike the VHS version) will actually be letterboxed in the correct ratio as stated in the above product details. You couldn't find a more obvious example of 'pan and scan' editing than the scene where David Hedison is dodging the lunging dinosaur while climbing the rock wall (he hugs the wall, dinosaur's head pops into view, pops out of view, back to Hedison, then to dinosaur, pops back into view, etc.) As to the movie itself, though a childhood favorite (I must have seen it 25 times between the theater and on TV) it promises more than it delivers. When you're 12 years old looking for adventure involving dinosaurs, this filled the bill, even though you knew that they weren't like the dinosaurs in your playset, books or King Kong. It was big and colorful. That probably won't be good enough for today's kids; the big won't be there on the small screen and color is taken for granted. And no CGI. I'll pass without comment on those lizard "dinosaurs" as well as Jill St. John's dog. I'll get it because of nostalgia and to finally see it again in 'scope.

Streetwise charmer and cardshark Eddy (Nick Moran) walks into the biggest card game of his life carrying a stake backed by the life-savings of his three best mates, Tom (Jason Flemyng), Bacon (Jason Statham) and Soap (Dexter Fletcher). Eddy is the sharpest player on the circuit but the game is a set-up, and Eddy leaves owing the underworld boss Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty) half a million. Harry gives Eddy a week to come up with the money before he starts taking fingers as collateral. Eddy s dad, JD (Sting) can cancel the debt by handing over his bar, lock, stock and barrel to his old adversary, Harry. JD refuses to give in, feeling his street-tough son can get himself out of his own messes. So, while Harry sends a couple of petty crooks to steal a pair of antique shotguns to add to his collection, Eddy and his mates plan a caper that will enable them to pay off Harry and make out like bandits! In a comedy of errors, and a helter-skelter ride through London s gangland, the guns, cash, drugs and identities become all mixed up as a full complement of London s lowlife get involved in a melee which even all their menace can t handle. Full of energy and surprising twists at every turn, it s a rollicking comedy that has it all, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Cockney boys Tom, Soap, Eddie, and Bacon are in a bind; they owe seedy criminal and porn king "Hatchet" Harry a sizable amount of cash after Eddie loses half a million in a rigged game of poker. Hot on their tails is a thug named Big Chris who intends to send them all to the hospital if they don't come up with the cash in the allotted time. Add into the mix an incompetent set of ganja cultivators, two dimwitted robbers, a "madman" with an afro, and a ruthless band of drug dealers and you have an astonishing movie called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Before the boys can blink, they are caught up in a labyrinth of double-crosses that lead to a multitude of dead bodies, copious amounts of drugs, and two antique rifles.

Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic à la Reservoir Dogs. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since The Krays has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie's movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequences, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a triumph--a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. --Jeremy Storey

2 out of 5 stars An OK film, nothing more...........2007-09-06

The first time I saw this, I liked it a bit, but I wasn't overly impressed. It was British, slick, but I never felt like I had seen a masterpiece of the British gangster genre (The Long Good Friday is light years better than this. Even lighter films like The League of Gentlemen and The Lavender Hill Mob are much better than this one. So is Donald Cammell's Performance.). Watching it again recently on The Sundance Channel, it's really a vain, shallow film, with very predictable dialogue that sounds Tarantinoesque, except with Cockney accents. It's really trying to be hip, edgy, and clever, but it's really rather tiresome and ultimately boring. Most people have said it's a U.K. ripoff of Quentin, and there's some truth to that. The film has a cute title, and it's nice to see London, but aside from that, I can't really think of anything this film can offer you. If you've seen it once, that's all you need.

4 out of 5 stars No Honor Among Thieves.......2007-07-24

I enjoy Guy Ritchie movies. "Snatch" is probably my favorite, but "Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels" is a blast to watch too. These dark British comedies are some of the best you will see. However, you will need a tolerance for violence. If you enjoy the "Kill Bill" movies and/or "Formula 51", you will probably enjoy this movie.

A member of a gang loses all his money and goes into debt to a crooked loan shark. His own gang is held responsible for the debt. They rob a group that robbed some pot dealers. Throw in some double barrel shotguns that get stolen that the loan shark wants and him hiring to many thugs to get him want he wants and you have lots of people dying. Great story and action. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best British Comedies Ever.......2007-06-25

If you've seen "Snatch" you have to watch this film (since it is the pre-sequel to "Snatch".) It is a very funny and yet full of action that you won't get bored. I am a big fan of Jason Statham so I purchased this film and I am hooked. Everyone who I recommended this film to has purchased it to add on to his/her collections. This film is idea at get-togethers.

5 out of 5 stars Madcap British crime caper.......2007-04-16

Director Guy Ritchie expertly concocted an amusing crime thriller replete with crosses and double crosses among various criminal groups in London's underworld. The plot surrounds a group of 4 low level criminals played by Jason Statham, Nick Moran, Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher who pool their resources to sit in at a high stakes card game with a 100,000 pound admission. Nick Moran playing Eddie is a card shark but the game run by porn king Harry "Hatchet" Lonsdale played by P.J. Moriarty is fixed. He loses the 100,000 and an aditional 500,000 which must be paid within a week or else.

The band of 4 friends contrive to recoup the stolen funds by ripping off a marijuana growing cartel that conveniently live next door. That group had already been targeted by other group of robbers and things as a result get predictably muddled.

Meanwhile The "Hatchet" has commissioned the theft of a pair of antique shotguns worth a small fortune that bizarrely wind up in the hands of Moran and his friends. The various groups begin exchanging both the money and the shotguns among them leaving behind a trail of bloodied corpses in this farcical romp.

Ritchie concludes this well contrived comedic thriller, which includes a plethora of tough looking British thugs, with a touch of irony that effectively caps this winning film.

4 out of 5 stars The only film that makes me proud to say I'm British.......2007-04-01

This is the best british comedy EVER....well in my opinion ;-)

It has a pulp fiction vibe, following a group of wheelers and dealers (hustlers) who get into a sticky situation with an East End gangster.

Original plot, clever dialogue and great cinematography. I'm sure Americans will struggle with the dialogue but give it a try!

Winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay, this critical and box-office hit from 1973 provided a perfect reunion for director George Roy Hill and stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford, who previously delighted audiences with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Set in 1936, the movie's about a pair of Chicago con artists (Newman and Redford) who find themselves in a high-stakes game against the master of all cheating mobsters (Robert Shaw) when they set out to avenge the murder of a mutual friend and partner. Using a bogus bookie joint as a front for their con of all cons, the two feel the heat from the Chicago Mob on one side and encroaching police on the other. But in a plot that contains more twists than a treacherous mountain road, the ultimate scam is pulled off with consummate style and panache. It's an added bonus that Newman and Redford were box-office kings at the top of their game, and while Shaw broods intensely as the Runyonesque villain, The Sting is further blessed by a host of great supporting players including Dana Elcar, Eileen Brennan, Ray Walston, Charles Durning, and Harold Gould. Thanks to the flavorful music score by Marvin Hamlisch, this was also the movie that sparked a nationwide revival of Scott Joplin's ragtime jazz, which is featured prominently on the soundtrack. One of the most entertaining movies of the early 1970s, The Sting is a welcome throwback to Hollywood's golden age of the '30s that hasn't lost any of its popular charm. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Still Carries A Sting After All These Years.......2007-09-12

First off - this movie was shot fullscreen by Hill and you gain nothing by having a letterboxed version. That being said, this version could use remastering for picture quality, but it doesn't detract from the film's magic spell, stellar cast, and wonderfull depression era atmosphere. I'd forgotten that Eileen Brennan played Newman's squeeze and she is largely forgotten today. I believe the last time I saw her was in Jeepers Creepers, as feisty as ever and turning two minutes of screen time into something special. But I digress. This movie has it all in spades. It's not a big con at all!

5 out of 5 stars The "Perfect Movie".......2007-08-19

There is little meaningful that I can add to the lengthy descriptions, reviews, and accolades already enunciated about "The Sting." It is the quintessentially "Perfect Movie," in every conceivable aspect of film-making. The cast, the story line itself, the script, the cinematography -everything. While not a short film by any measure, there is not a weak link in in the sequence of events and it moves along very evenly, with interspersed high drama, excitement, mystery, moments of tenderness, and one of the best "surprise endings" ever conceived. If there were eleven stars to award here, eleven it would be!

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC NEWMAN & REDFORD! THIS IS THE CORRECT ASPECT RATIO!.......2007-08-03

This is a classic film. I'm glad I waited so long to watch it again, as it felt like it was the first time. The Sting has an incredible cast and an engrossing story. If you've never seen it,it will knock your socks off,if you have you will still love watching the movie unfold. The DVD treatment is excellent with a stellar transfer and yes it is the correct aspect ratio! It also had a ton of interesting extras.

5 out of 5 stars SO much better than............2007-07-17

I think that Oceans Eleven was trying to copy this movie; the big bad rich guy who they want to ruin, they steal his money..........ETC. Although I did like Oceans Eleven and stuff about it was unique, I though that this was by far so much better. Also I really like Robert Redford movies! Try watching Buch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid(also starring Paul Newman) or All the Presidents Men.

3 out of 5 stars the sting legacy series.......2007-07-15

The only reason this movie gets a low rating was due to a damaged dvd, that had to be replaced. Otherwise this movie is in my personal top 100 movies of all time.

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has

Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Usul Muad'Dib Atreides
something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick

Melange fans have a lot to be excited about with this impressive edition of Dune, though the "Extended Edition" label is a bit misleading. If you are expecting the mythic 4 hour "David Lynch preferred" version that is rumored to be sitting in a vault, don't get your hopes up. This isn't it. In an attempt to quickly sober spice-fueled giddy fans, producer Raffaella De Laurentiis (daughter of Dino De Laurentiis) immediately reveals in the 'Deleted Scenes' introduction that the rumored 4 hour version is just that; a rumor. What this DVD set does contain is the 2 Hour 17 Minute original theatrical release digitally remastered, available for the first time in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 surround sound. The presentation on this edition is a drastic improvement from the original letterboxed release. On the flipside of the DVD

is the alternate 2 hour 57 minute version cut for television. As many fans know, this 'extended' version was disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee;" the name used by directors whose film was taken away and recut against their wishes. There is some new material in the 14 minutes of deleted scenes offering a bit more background into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Kwisatz Haderach prophecy and the Fremen culture and their struggle. All other extras focus on the international production crew of Dune including the design team, special effects, and short documentaries on the miniature models and wardrobe designs. Disappointingly, there are no appearances in the bonus features by any of the original cast or Lynch himself. However, many of the production crew members talk openly about working with David Lynch and his artistic involvement in the visual process. To cap it off, this edition comes in a very stylish and sturdy DVD tin that opens like a keep case. --Rob Bracco

3 out of 5 stars Not done right for HD.......2007-09-13

OK the title pretty much says it all. I have always been a fan of this movie but I expected a lot more out of it for a HD-DVD release. The video quality was pretty much the same as the original, none of the graphics were enhanced, and it was other than being made to fit in HD resolutions without issue nothing else was done to the film.

All the blotches that were present on the original film were left and show excessively in the opening credits. The CGI looked entirely untouched. There was in some scenes strong evidence of grainy looking video.

The only reason I give this movie 3 stars is because it's DUNE, if it were any other title I would have received much less. I would have taken a little more care in releasing this movie for HD but apparently I was wrong. You might as well just pick up the original DVD as with a HD player it'll upscale to just about the same quality of this HD-DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Rent it.......2007-09-05

This is not a very good adaptation of the novel, so if you are a purist you will be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Alright...until you read the book........2007-08-14

I saw this once; thought it was decent. Then I read the book, and realised just how BAD it was in comparison. It's now impossible for me to watch this and NOT think about what it could have been, if there'd been a genuine attempt to transfer the book's depth to the screen.

Not bad if you've never read the book; but if you love good sci-fi, READ THE BOOK INSTEAD.

4 out of 5 stars the sleeper has awakened.......2007-08-07

This movie is so cool. I can understand why someone who has never read the booK Would find this very hard to follow...or enjoy. But I LOVED it. I think the acting was good...aside from maybe Sting's (which wasn't too bad either). The ending was not what I expected, but hey, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't keep my eyes off it, and the cinemetography is so well done, that I could find something different each time I watch it. Very cool.

Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti is mostly exquisite on this concert DVD, which gives old fans and new arrivals a chance to hear him apply his rich, expressive playing to a number of old standards, as well as one or two of his own compositions. Botti, along with a remarkable band including Billy Childs on piano and Billy Kilson on drums, plays six numbers as instrumentals but is joined on eight other performances by a few guests. Sans vocals, Botti warms up a delighted audience with a nice, if slightly exercised, take on "Someone to Watch Over Me," but proves magnificent on "When I Fall In Love" and especially Leonard Cohen's "A Thousand Kisses Deep." Then out glides old pal Sting (who invited Botti to join his own touring band some years ago), who has a nice go at "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?", followed by jazz-blues belter Jill Scott's terrific "Good Morning Heartache." Less effective are two appearances by Paula Cole, of which the second, "The Look of Love," doesn't work particularly well for anyone, including Botti and composer-pianist Burt Bacharach (also onstage). Renee Olstead sizzles up the joint with her kittenish "Pennies from Heaven," and Sting returns for a comic if touching "My Funny Valentine." --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great CD/DVD.......2007-07-26

This is CD/DVD contains some great guest performances, espacially for those that may not be familiar with some of the artists. Renee Olsted is a fantastic singer, and was only 18 years old at that time. She has a solo CD that she recorded it.

I also liked Paula Cole sining The Look of Love with Burt Bacharach accompanying her on the piano. Paula Cole has several of her own CDs that are worth looking into, espacially her new one entitled Courage.

And of course this CD/DVD contains great trumpet playinb by Chris Botti. I highly recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Great collector's DVD........2007-06-08

I have a fairly large (approx. 4000+ items)jazz CD and vinyl collection. This is my first jazz DVD. My wife saw the Chris Botti - Live concert and convinced me to buy it. It is the first of my new collection of jazz DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Re-playing the magic of a .......2007-04-06

After this magic night in L.A. with an all-star cast of guest vocalists, Chris Botti took the show on the road -- minus the great singers -- and on five consecutive nights stopped in as many Canadian cities, including this one. The all-instrumental show was, to my memory, even better (than this original show) because of the extended solos by Chris himself and his brilliant, accompanying musicians.

Botti told his Winnipeg audience that, when he toured with Sting, he was urged to "find yourself the best drummer in the world - and make him the heart of your band."

"So I Googled," he said, "for 'The baddest- *ss drummer in the world,' and up came the name Billy Kilson." Then Botti told us: "What you are about to see, you will not believe." He wasn't exaggerating. The drum solo (I forget the tune -- doesn't matter) was beyond any musical experience I've witnessed since Oscar Peterson last performed here 20 years ago.

I turned to the person next to me and said, "This is like watching a god." At one point Billy Kilson was performing with just one hand, multiple rhythms, with alternating shadings so subtle it sounded like he was using brushes, not sticks.

The entire band stood out in the front lobby of our "Burton Cummings Theatre" and signed autographs until every last patron had gone out into that good night. I wanted to talk to other members of this all star band, comprised of Grammy-winners, including pianist Billy Childs and guitarist Mark Whitfield. Instead, I went straight for Bill Kilson.

"Who are your heroes?" Billy thought about it a minute, (he has a modest, gentle demeanor) and said, "My teacher" (a lesser-known jazz drummer - but an influential artist whose name I can't recall six months later). When he'd mentioned just that one name, I asked: "Anyone else?"

"Max Roach," he said.

The solo Kilson performs on this DVD is impressive enough; but after seeing him 'in person' on a more extended solo, I would urge jazz fans to find a way to see Billy Kilson "live and in person," -- and be prepared to re-arrange your personal pantheon of greatest-ever drummers! Good to see that the Amazon.com editorial review (above) mentions his name and the word "remarkable" in the same sentence!

The "bonus track" on this DVD concert, also happened to be Chris Botti's lone 'encore' here in Winnipeg -- a gorgeous rendition of the Arlen/Mercer classic written for Frank Sinatra. The trumpeter told us: "I worked with Sinatra for two weeks at the start of my career -- when I was fresh out of college!" It was, he said, "the greatest musical experience of my life"

For the Winnipeg audience that gave him a standing ovation, his performance of "One for My Baby" -- ALONE -- was worth the price of admission!

5 out of 5 stars Chris Botti.......2007-03-23

Chris Botti is a master and this album is super. A great value with both the CD and DVD included.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Botti's Live CD/DVD.......2007-03-08

This is a great way to spend a quiet evening! Both the CD and watching the live performance were phenomenal. Chris is a very gifted artist and entertainer--he definitely has a way with the audience (and not bad looking either!!) I've had the chance to see him in concert....don't miss him if he comes your way!

Definitely one of the best movies ever seen. Gave Vinnie Jones credibility as an actor and in my opinion, made some people notice Jason Statham. Never short of action and typical Brit humour. One of the defining movies of British cinema

5 out of 5 stars Guy Richie At his Best.......2007-05-30

I already own his movie "Snatch" and that brings me to tears laughing, this movie is no exception. The way way he draws you into the storyline and the characters reactions are hilarious. Absolutly love this movie.

4 out of 5 stars A triumph of attitude and style.......2007-05-26

Looking back on "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels," it's not hard to see why Director Guy Ritchie became one of the hottest directors around. It's a rollicking joyride of a film that delivers non-stop action, head-spinning plot twists and plenty of laughs.

The movie centers around four young punks who chip in some money so Eddy (Nick Moran), the master card player of the group, can enter a high-stakes card game with Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarity), a local gang boss whose specialties include gambling and porn. Unfortunately for Eddy, he's in way over his head, and ends up owing Harry a cool 500,000 pounds. His penalty if he doesn't come up with the money in a week? Having his fingers cut off one by one by Harry's mammoth enforcer, Barry the Baptist (Lenny McLean).

Eddy and his friends Soap, Tom and Bacon are understandably distraught at this turn of events. As they rack their brains to come up with a plan to scratch together the money, they overhear their neighbors discussing plans to rob a wealthy group of drug dealers. A plan is quickly hatched to ambush the theives and steal the drug money that they stole. And did I mention that a seemingly unrelated pair of antique shotguns manages to work its way into the picture?

Needless to say, when Eddy & Co. put their plan into action, glorious mayhem ensues. The cast, which includes European soccer star Vinnie Jones as Harry's collector Big Chris, is a likeable bunch all around. But the film's real star is director Ritchie, who pulls out all the stops to command our attention, from freeze frames to slo-mo to speed-up and everything in between.

Naysayers call the plot ridiculous and lament the film's lack of substance. Come to think of it, the police do seem conspicuously absent considering all the gunplay, drug dealing and theivery that's going on. And even diehard fans of "Lock" will likely admit that it's ultimately a triumph of attitude & style over substance.

In spite of its shortcomings, though, "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" feels blisteringly alive from start to finish, a thrilling rollercoaster of a movie that's well worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Unique but Great........2007-03-29

This movie has a more advanced story line portrayed through a heavy dialog, with highly developed fun characters that drive the movie. Typical Guy Ritchie film.
Directors Cut is worth the extra money.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-03-14

I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie. Good characters, good story line and a good mix of humor and drama. If you haven't seen it - see it now.

Amazon.com essential video

The only reason this movie gets a low rating was due to a damaged dvd, that had to be replaced. Otherwise this movie is in my personal top 100 movies of all time.

4 out of 5 stars For Ladies Only .......2007-08-16

Gentlemen, take it outside.... Take a hike, fellas....

Hellooo, ladieees. Don't pay any attention to those men who want to see more musicianship footage. This DVD is about the whole package, the lifestyle, baby, of Sting, Sting, Sting! Oh, you noticed - I dyed my hair white and spiked it. And how frisky of you, yes, you may touch my outfit. It's like Sting's, conceptually. 30 percent Mad Max, 70 percent Wham, can you feel it? Alriiight. No, only one zipper really serves a purpose. The DVD is playing by the couch, let's check it out. Would you care for a Tab or New Coke? I hoarded them. This song is "Walking in Your Footsteps", about how humans will become extinct, so we might as well just, yeaaah... oohhhh... keep going -- Oh, you noticed - my gold-framed ticket stub from the Synchronicity show at Oakland Stadium. It's yours, doll. Now let's get back to pretending it's the end of the world, and get all intertwined, yet self-absorbed and dramatic. Okay, okay: A lot of people at the Oakland show said openers Oingo Boingo, Madness and even The Fixx were more fun than The Police. But, when you're dedicated to the cause of commercial raga, like me and Sting, you have to be humorless. It's a sacrifice we make for our... art. Oh yeah, that's Copeland, whatever, "The Copester".... I was in tight with his old man Miles Jr., RIP, a founding father of the CIA. The band's booking agent and manager are scions of the CIA honcho too. Does that turn you on? Yes, um, I do some work for "The Agency." It's secret, so I can't talk about it. Ooooh baby, okay, okay: Let's just say that's why The Police and I are never *too* radical -- just edgy enough to be commercial. Next topic, baby! Let me skip to "Every Breath"... Caress your curves 'like a bass'? Bring on the night, baby, yeah! And some awesome love aerobics... and maybe some herky-jerky-side-to-side 80's moves.... YeaaaaAAAoooo.....

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy but worth it.......2007-07-30

Since I'm a huge fan of the Police, it's probably compulsory that I own this DVD. That said, the cheesy 80's post-production on this DVD ALMOST ruins it. Almost. The fantastic performance caught on tape saves it. Buy this, but be prepared for a serious 80's fest, including Sting playing a Warwick bass (??) and wearing a giant shaggy primary-colored wildebeast coat.

5 out of 5 stars Police dvd makes great gift!.......2007-07-28

Bought the dvd for dad, he is huge fan of police, I was raised on every album, and he LOVED it. Totally made his week!

2 out of 5 stars oh, hum!.......2007-05-12

There are better DVD's out there. This is not very good at all. Audio and video are poor.
Skip this one.

4 out of 5 stars A good live performance from a great 80's band........2007-05-07

What do you get when you cross the pretentious son of a milkman (an incorrigible jazzer nicknamed "Sting") with a great drummer adept at Carribean rhythms (a self-described "population statistic" named Stewart Copeland) and a journeyman 1960's guitarist who (for better or worse) never quite fit the mold of a Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton (a.k.a. Andy Summers)?? Well, you get a group of veteran musicians with a well-developed songcraft, a high-level of musicianship, an eclectic repertoire that fuses jazz/funk/reggae/punk rock and a very strong desire to succeed (they even went blonde-the ultimate sacrifice!).

This film is perhaps the lone historical document that captures this great 80's band in their prime and in front of an audience for a full length concert. As such it is essential viewing for any fan. It does, however, suffer from the fact that, unlike the classic "power trio" format(i.e. "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" or "Cream) which attempts to fill the sonic void using a high level of virtuosity, this trio takes a minimalistic approach to their music. In the studio, this creates a subtle, simple elegance. On stage, it results in some dead air. This group would have been better served if they had been filmed in a smaller, more intimate venue. But, we'll just have to make do with what's available here!

Sidenote: Sting's multi-colored post-apocalyptic outfit, probably inspired by the Mad Max movie series, is vaguely reminiscent of a pinata the day after a particularly raucous birthday party. It's good for a chuckle.

Monty Python's Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars An absolute classic.......2007-07-09

Great movie, about time it made it to DVD. But unfortunately, the picture quality is about the same as the VHS copy, at least in my opinion. On an up-converting HD DVD player, it looks simply awful, you need to watch it in 480i/p.

5 out of 5 stars fantasy classic.......2007-07-05

With some of Monty Python's cast, how can you go wrong? Fun for the entire family.

5 out of 5 stars Un gran cuento ..........2007-05-13

como aquellos que nos contaban de niño, pero para entenderlo como adulto. Una historia genial para mayores, aunque no muy entretenidas para niños del 2000.

5 out of 5 stars Grotesquely Magnificent!.......2007-04-12

This film delights the eyes with its startlingly beautiful, and often disturbing, imagery. In one unforgettable scene, for instance, we see the Baron's ship coming to rest on the white rippling sands of the moon, as a spattering of stars--constellations of the zodiac--whirl past in a midnight-blue firmament. In another, which plunges us into the fulminating fury of Mount Etna, we see a a Botticelli-like Venus emerging tranquilly from her seashell, as handmaidens and cherubs drape her in white silk and pink satin ribbons; we then watch her levitating with the Baron in a magical waltz, as they spin heavenwards in front of Tivoli-like cascading fountains. In a third sequence, which depicts the almost unrelieved distruction of war, we see a great black-winged Angel of Death, who swoops down and kneels over the recumbent Baron, its skeletal fingers gently lifting the fire of the soul from his mouth. This image of Death, as beautiful as it is dreadful, has come straight off a seventeenth-century Italian baroque church.

Underneath the unbridled fantasy however, "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" poses a serious question: Can the creative power of the imagination survive in a world of cold--and supposedly enlightened--reason which inevitably conjures up fear of 'the other' as an excuse to inflict suffering on its peoples through wars? And if reason succeeds in stifling imagination, will the world not be a poorer place? The Baron's opening of the city gates to end the people's suffering represents an opening of the mind to the possibilities of new creative solutions to the problems of mankind.

This beautifully acted as well as darkly humorous film is sometimes disturbing to watch, but it never ceases to fascinate!

5 out of 5 stars A delirious visual tour de force!.......2007-02-21

Adventures of Baron finds to Gilliam in absolute plenitude of his imaginative abilities to create an anthological feats for eyes, plenty of ravishing inspiration and lovable savoir vivre.

An absolute must for all those hard fans of Gilliam around the world that I guess, must be too many.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie on HD DVD!.......2007-02-13

Honestly i've seen better HD DVD's but still this one is remastered like crazy, its a hell of alot clearer than the original dvd release and its amazing to see what they can do with movies such as old as this one. I mean 1973 this movie comes out and after watching the HD DVD you would think it was a new release. All in all to keep this short this is an amazing film and you should pick it up on HD DVD right now!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!.......2007-01-18

The Sting is one of the great period films. It flawlessly captures the 1930s, an impressive feat greatly helped along by Marvin Hamlisch's lush ragtime score. This movie is unforgettable for several reasons. First is the amazing screen camaraderie of Newman and Redford, immortalized in this and Butch Cassidy (they were also supposed to star together in The Man Who Would Be King, but themselves realized they were not right for the parts). Second is the plot. It's amazing stuff, endlessly fun and exciting. The story of conmen uniting for revenge is a great premise, and the ending of course is classic. Third is the look and feel of the film. I love this time period and love how well depicted it is in this movie. Robert Shaw makes a great villain, and the famous poker scene where Newman dupes him is endlessly entertaining. By the way, in the scene where Paul Newman's character shows Redford some of his sleight of hand skills (notice it doesn't show Newman's face)--those are the hands of the great John Scarne, one of the greatest card manipulators in history. It's unlikely a simple conman would have the skills and finesse of Scarne, but oh well!
