Product Description
Ed Sullivan's show was straight out of old vaudeville; brief acts of every description, from slapstick comedy to operatic arias. At least once, he showed a film, the only known film of Anna Pavlova (doing her Swan Dance). The Muppets first TV appearance was on Ed Sullivan. Stiff and expressionless, with a peculiar voice and a talent for mispronunciation, Sullivan was at least as recognizable as Cronkite to early 60s viewers. Narrated by Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas 1. The Jackson 5- I Want You Back 2. Bill Hayley & His Comets - Rock Around The Clock 3. Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel 4. Ray Charles - What'd I Say 5. Jackie Wilson - Lonely Teardrops 6. The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There 7. James Brown - Please, Please, Please 8. Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman 9. The Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic? 10. The Doors - Light My Fire 11. The Temptations & The Supremes - [I Know] I'm Losing You 12. The Young Rascals - Good Lovin' 13. The Mamas & The Papas - Monday, Monday 14. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son 15. Janis Joplin - Maybe, Maybe, Maybe This Disc is Compatible with ALL DVD players and is region Free

Good performances, but not enough.......2005-01-06
I loved the performances on the DVD: the Doors, Bill Haley, and early Elvis, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Janis Joplin, but I was a little disappointed that it only included one Motown performance: Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations. The Tempts were the best part of this video especially knowing the background to their appearance. No Marvin Gaye? No Four Tops? Well, David Ruffin sings the "(I Know) I'm Losing You" duet with Diana, but Diana gets most of the lead. The song sounded pretty watered down for her. Ruffin was the best part of the duet---such a dynamic performer! I was disappointed in the Mamas and the Papas' performance (very very disappointed). There definitely should have been more performances.
15 best performances of Ed Sullivan.......2004-03-25
This DVD presents 15 performances (10 in color, 5 in black and white) selected from the Ed Sullivan Show aired at different times in 1950's and 60's. The performers are, in the order of appearance, Jackson 5(with 10 year old Michael!), Bill Haley and His Comets, Elvis Presley, Doors, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Temptations and Supremes, Loving Spoonful, Mamas and Papas, CCR, Young Rascals, and Janis Joplin. Each performance is a gem(with a possible exception of one which appears to be lip-synced); the DVD could very well be called "the 15 best performances of Ed Sullivan". The picture quality is excellent, and the sound clean and good. The commentary by Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas is concise and yet helpful.
So, why not 5 stars? There are only 15 songs, one each by the above 15 performers. Granted that this DVD is priced a little lower than others, the entire show is only 50 minutes. By the time it ended, I felt that I had seen only the first half of it.
Temptations/Supremes Diana/David duet.......2004-01-11
Wow, this is a must to have, not only because it has The Beatles, The Doors, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Bill Haley and the Comets, Janis Joplin and an innocent Jackson 5 (plus more) but it has The Temptations and Supremes on stage together. What really is the best is the lead singers of the Supremes, Diana Ross, and the lead singer of the Temptations, David Ruffin, doing a duet of each other's songs and David blows Diana off the stage. Great stuff.

unexpected highlights.......2006-11-12
It wasn't easy for rock 'n' roll stars to get visual exposure prior to the heyday of the MTV music video. For the most part, television appearances were limited to traditional variety shows such as Ed Sullivan, Hullabaloo, Shindig, and talk shows such as Dick Cavett and Mike Douglas. Of course there were the occasional feature length films like Monterey Pop and Woodstock, and eventually late-night weekend programming such as Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and ABC-TV's 'In Concert' series began opening the door to extended performances. Most of the material for this UK import DVD was drawn from the more rock star friendly confines of The Beat Club and Musikladen European programs. Even though those shows boister a reputation for allowing performers to reenact their stage performances, most of what is included on this DVD are lip-synched, highly choreographed, and special effects laden productions. That, of course, is unfortunate, but at least we get to see historic footage of many acts, often performing some of their less appreciated recordings.
Among the truly live sequences, the most entertaining chapters include Richie Havens doing an inspired 'Here Comes the Sun', Canned Heat rocking out on 'Let's Get Together' (and featuring the amazingly stoic Al 'Blind Owl' Wilson laying rich slide guitar runs between Bob 'The Bear' Hite's rugged verses), a too-young-to-shave Steve Winwood delivering 'Keep On Running' with the Spencer Davis clan, the Hollies on 'I Can't Let Go' (it's a real trip to see and hear Graham Nash in his formative years), The Byrds with Roger McGuinn and Clarence White romping through the title track, and the big finish... both Ike and Tina Turner igniting the stage with a bombshell performance of CCR's 'Proud Mary' (this one featuring Ike's heavy bass vocals). Viewing these tracks alone surely justifies the purchase of the video for any fan of 1960's rock.
Among the more inspired lip-synchs are Arthur Brown's 'Fire' (with the lead singer in full flaming regalia), the very cool-looking Beach Boys on 'Do It Again', and Joe Cocker just as suitably spastic on 'With a Little Help From My Friends'. Of course some of the acts seem either opposed to or completely incompetent in lip-synch mode. Among them are Cream on 'Strange Brew' (which is lip-synched by Clapton, although Jack Bruce actually sang the lead vocal), and Steve Marriot not even near the microphone on 'Lazy Sunday'. A number of tracks may have limited interest for viewers in the States, as their primary audience was in the UK, where this DVD was compiled. Among those segments are Julie Driscoll torturing 'This Wheel's On Fire' (although it is interesting to witness Brian Auger providing back-up on piano for her), and Manfred Mann's second offering on the disc, 'Fox On the Run', which has a much stronger cultural appeal for the British. The first of the twenty-three offerings features The Who on 'Pictures of Lily' (nice to see Keith Moon pretending to be playing the drums), but their second selection, 'I'm Free' features only silouette images of the band pretending to be playing the track.
Among the more forgettable 3-minute clips are The Hollies doing 'Jennifer Eccles' (for some reason I don't think songs about girls should include their last names), Thunderclap Newman's 'Something In the Air' (the song is decent, but the band lacks personality), the UK favorites The Status Quo droning 'Are You Growing Tired of My Love' (a title in need of punctuation), and speaking of droning, check out The Moody Blues on 'I Really Haven't Got the Time' (and neither do I!). A bit older Steve Winwood performs with Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood (where was Dave Mason this time?) on the curious 'Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush' (a song whose appeal escapes me), and the pretty much washed-up Everly Brothers on 'Stories We Could Tell' (...but we wish you wouldn't). And Ray Davies, one of the most underrated rock figures, performing 'Waterloo Sunset' which is far from the most distinguished song by The Kinks. Obviously there are a number of lesser tracks here that will force you to keep your remote handy.
Despite some of the filler, I really can't say that I didn't enjoy giving each track the once-over. It was great to see some of these icons of rock music in their early years, well before they had any idea how honored they would become in the lexicon of rock 'n' roll. I even enjoyed the between song video and audio clips from the era, some of which are especially rare and poignant, such as Robert Kennedy announcing the news to a crowd that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. The clips go a long way in putting each song into its historical context. We're lucky to have these moments preserved for our edification on DVD, but aren't there many, many similar gems lying in vaults somewhere, just waiting to be exhumed for posterity? Someone needs to get at the task of editing that vast black and white goldmine before I die!
A viewer.......2004-01-07
Great DVD, but there are no pop-ups in this DVD. Classic Pictures should have added the pop-up features in it just like it did with "Wild Thing" and "Get It On." Those clips were made in Germany long before digital computers.
Great for Sixties music fans!.......2003-11-28
I enjoyed this DVD, with one reservation- some of the songs are crossfaded with 60's stock footage (Viet Nam, protests, etc) and some lame narration. Despite that, it contains many rare clips, mostly from the German show "Beat Club" or "Musikladen". Most of the songs are lip synched, so the audio is taken from the original recordings and is excellent. Even the songs that are live sound great(the Hollies track rocks!). Here's the track list:
1. The Who- Pictures of Lily
2. Crazy World of Arthur Brown- Fire
3. Cream- Strange Brew
4.Richie Havens- Here Comes the Sun
5. Joe Cocker- With A Little Help from my Friends
6. Manfred Mann- Mighty Quinn
7. Beach Boys- Do It Again
8. Small Faces- Lazy Sunday
9. Hollies- Jennifer Eccles
10. Canned heat - Let's work together (live audio)
11. Thunderclap Newman- Something in the air
12. Brian Auger Trinity- This Wheel's on Fire
13. Kinks- Waterloo Sunset
14. Spencer Davis Group- Keep On Running
15. Traffic- Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush
16. Status Quo- Are you tired of my love?
17. Everly Bros. - Stories We Could Tell
18. Moody Blues- I Really Haven't Got the time
19. Hollies- I can't let go (live, awesome!)
20. Manfred Mann- Fox On the Run
21. Who- I'm Free
22. Byrds- So You Want to Be a Rock & Roll star (live)
23. Procul Harum- Salty Dog
24. Ike & Tina- Proud mary (live)

hoped for better .......2005-08-29
I did not really like this DVD at all. I had to give it a 3 star beacause I was trying to be nice. One of the songs that I've loved stunk big time! The song was "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" I have alot of music DVD's over 150 and this DVD has to be one of the least favorite to date that an "America" I hope to help in peoples decison in saving money in buying bad DVD's.
MICKEY THOMAS IS JUST EXCELLENT DO WE NEED TO SAY MORE............2005-01-15
If you LOVE MICKEY THOMAS like I do...then just buy this DVD and you will love it and you will also love the Close up camera shots of MICKEY THOMAS too they are just excellent !!!
Great music.......2004-12-21
This is really great music from the 80s. It doesn't sound anything like the singles of course though because it's live and many years later I think. I think Mickey gets a little out of tune everynow and then on this but thats ok because he rocks and to be able to sing those notes in the first place is awsome. If you like Starship, you have to get this.

With a catalog of rockin' hits, the music of Iron Butterfly defined a generation- but one song, and one song alone, made them superstars- In A Godda Da Vida. For the first time in nearly 25 years, Iron Butterfly returns to the stage for the comeback of the century! Songs:
1. Iron Butterfly Theme 2. Unconscious Power 3. Butterfly Bleu 4. Beyond the Milky Way 5. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida 6. Easy Rider
Customer Reviews:
Iron Butterfly still Rockin' and Rollin'!!! Only two original members are present, but it's still great!!!.......2007-03-18
Okay, there only two original members(bassist Lee Dorman & drummer Ron Bushy)of the band on this great "live in concert" DVD,but thats alright, because they sound great even with the two new recruits!!! Includes "Iron Butterfly Theme","Easy Rider",Butterfly Bleu" and of course thier immortal anthem "In A Gadda Da Vida"(complete with a spectacular drum solo by Ron Bushy)!!! A bit on the short side(about 50 minutes) but still great!!! Rock on Iron Butterfly!!! Two thumbs up!!! Five stars!!! A+
Hippie Retro.......2007-01-10
Ina Gadda da vida has always been one of my favourite pieces of rock music, so it was great to get a live performance of this song. Some of the band members have of course changed but they all played the music with much relish and skill, and time has made them even better musicians. I also enjoyed the other tracks which had a great blues beat. I was bemused at the 'hippie' clothing but then they were very much a part of that era. I am glad I purchased this DVD
Don't destroy your memories.......2005-11-12
Some bands are best left as nice memories. I was a fan of Iron Butterfly and thought that METAMORPHISIS was a great album. After that album the band took on two new guitar players and started to sound like a handful of other less talented bands of the era.(Maybe they underestimated the input of guitarist Erik Braun who passed away last year). The band disintegrated into a faceless "who cares" band.
If you were a fan of the early Butterfly, this DVD will disappoint you greatly. What we get here is original members Ron Bushy and Lee Dorman with two guys who don't play or sound anything like Doug Ingle and Erik Braun. This sounds like an average bar band jamming on Iron Butterfly songs. (As an example: Part of the bands sound was based around the tone of Doug's Vox Continental organ. This new keyboard player uses a Hammond B3 set up to sound like Keith Emerson and sounds nothing like Doug vocally.)
If you want to get a taste of this DVD get the LEGENDS OF ROCK AND ROLL-LIVE AT ITCHYCOO PARK. It contains one song (In-A-Gada-Da-Veda) from this concert and is good sampler of other bands on the same show. At least you will hear some really good perforamnces from Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railraod), Styx, Steppenwolf and others. You'll know why you don't want to see the full Iron Butterfly performance.

Description
In the 60's, there was a new wave of music coming from England, an invasion unlike anything else America had ever experienced. Then, in February, 1964, The Beatles landed on Ed Sullivan's stage and our world changed forever. The so-called "British Invasion" started a flow of groups that took America by storm, groups such as The Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, The Animals and the Hollies. They were cutting edge, far different from what we'd come to expect from rock `n' roll in the States
they had long hair, dressed in narrow lapel suits, looked scruffy, and they had a unique charm. How did we respond? We met the British head on, with groups like The Beach Boys, The Mamas and Papas, The Byrds and groundbreaking artists like James Brown and Bob Dylan, all of whom appear in this amazing program. Timeless live musical performances coupled with insightful interviews from the musicians themselves tell the story of the music that changed our lives.
