Remember where you were when..........2007-09-13

This is one of those events, whether musical or otherwise, that comes along once a generation. The result is that everyone remembers where they were when....

In my case, I was pottering around at home, blissfully unaware of anything, when my Dad phoned me and said "Turn on your TV - three guys are singing beautifully." I did, and the rest is history.

I'm a professional musician and can't pull out bits or say where people were better than others. Pavarotti was aureate and majestic, his great bulk filling the space, singing with his entire face....Jose Carreras wonderfully intense and sensitive, like the younger brother, keen to impress and seeking approval (later bravely to fight his own health battles)....and Domingo was mischievous and competitive.

Zubin Mehta held the whole event together brilliantly, part authoritative, part conspiratorial. In the magical setting of Caracalla, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

It was the best jam session ever, and if you haven't seen it, you've been deprived. If you have, you'll want it again.

a Classic Concert.......2007-09-10

the three tenors and they capture so much together on stage. I bought this on CD years ago and I use to play it for my sunday dinners and I enjoyed the performances and the Chemistry of there voices. the Late Great Pavarotti,Carreras and Domingo were all great. there voices touched all in the audiences. this is one of those performances where you if you are a fan of the power of a Voice as a main Instrument then this Concert is a must for you. a must have of a Classic Performance.

Please re-release this magnificent concert in High Definition!.......2007-08-07

The best opera performance ever! This needs to be re-released in high definition. It would be a showcase HD disc because the details of the orchestra on the wide Caracalla stage would show off the HD. I hope they shot this on film so we can get an excellent transfer but even if it was video, it will still exceed the standard DVD quality that we have now.

PERHAPS THE GREATEST CONCERT DVD EVER!!!.......2007-05-21

This DVD surpasses the very best concert videos you'll ever view. Recorded in Italy, the scintillating performances will sweep you away to past times and far-off places. Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti--what can I say but BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!! How fortunate are we afficionados to have three maestros of the art to view for years to come, long after they're gone---we'll still have them, immortalized on DVD. They perform at a level that seemingly even surprises themselves. A MUST for any lover of opera, arias or great concert videos. BRAVO!!!

Three Tenors.......2007-02-17

This DVD is superb. Luciano Pavarotti is at his best, and so are the other tenors. I have enjoyed watching it several times and never get tired of it. Wonderful to hear all the tenors at their best.

Anything Luciano Pavarotti does will appeal to hordes of collectors, but this rather uneven recital from 1984 is not one of his most dazzling efforts. The problem is hard to pin down, but he seems fatigued or depressed at the beginning of the program, particularly in the 18th-century arias, a tradition in Italian recitals but one that he wisely abandoned later in his career. The accompaniment is piano, not orchestra, but that is no problem; it sets off the voice with a fine clarity.

Terrible recording-video and audio.......2005-01-25

Got it at Wal-Mart in the really cheap section, yeah, I shoulda' known better. The video is very grainy and the audio is not even stereo quality in my opinion. This video really sucks. That is not to say that Pavarotti didn't do a great job, he probably did his best as usual, but you can't feel it with this poor quality recording. Very bad, save your money and get the "Original Three Tenors" Concert first.

Quality wasn't up to scratch........2005-01-13

This DVD has the sound out of time with the picture(atleast for me), which was very frustrating. But the sound itself is good. This concert was very nice to listen to, its a taseteful one.
The DVD cover is pepperred with spelling mistakes and poor information about arias and which operas they are from, which leads me to question how these were made. But it was such a cheap buy I shouldn't be complaining.

PS. The rich bastards sitting behind him get on your nerves.
Theres a funny little introduction to the DVD also, as well as a interview with the tenor which is good, but the quality of the DVD itself wasn't very good for me.

Pavarotti gives his all.......2004-12-17

The description says only for USA and Canada. I live in New Zealand and it plays okay here, in case anyone is wondering. Pavarotti really gives everything in this concert. It is very formal but you appreciate his voice when there is just a piano and the singer has nowhere to hide. Great performance from a wonderful performer.

Great singing, OK piano playing, annoying camera work.......2001-10-11

The singing is very good. Piano playing is only OK. Leone Magiera is not too good here. I wish they could have gotten James Levine as the pianist; he was GREAT in the other recital.

Here, Pavarotti sings Rossini, Bellini, Resbeghi, Verdi (only one song, La mia letizia), Puccini (only one song, Donna non vidi mai) and Donizetti (only one song, Una furtiva lagrima) .

Visually, it's a mixed bag. The camera goes frequently from Magiera to Pavarotti, and does really annoying close-ups of Pavarotti's face. One annyoing example is in La Danza (after a horrible rythmical mistake) where we see Pavarotti wincing and shaking his head. There is more, but enough.

So do get this one, but don't let it be the final word for you. A better recital is the one with Pavarotti and Levine at the Met. That one is much better.

The Worst.......2001-07-31

I cannot believe what happened to me. Just purchased the latest and greatest DVD sound systems and bought this album. The sound is the WORST and thus make the performance only okay. I played it once and probably will never play it anymore. The DVD cover said available on CD and I though the sound is at least okay .....do not buy this one

Nice Recital, Poor Sound Quality.......2001-01-19

Pavarotti sings a piano-accompanied recital in Barcelona (1989) before an enthusiastic audience. It's a very nice program of his usual recital repertoire (arias and songs). He seems to have been in fine voice for the occasion. I wish I could have been there to hear it, because I certainly CAN'T hear it properly by playing this DVD. The entire sound track seems to have been modulated by an extraneous signal, so that every note is accompanied by combination tones which are not part of the music. The voice is afflicted less than the piano, which often sounds as though John Cage had "prepared" it. The DVD is branded "Q" Records and "Atlantic." I am not familiar with these brands, and probably will not get more familiar if this is a representative sample of their production quality. A note on the jacket states that this recital is also available on CD. I presume that the CD sounds better than the DVD!
