Masters of the Country Blues - Rev. Gary Davis and Sonny Terry

ASIN: B00005LDCP Release Date: 2001-07-10 |

Taken from kinescopes of performances filmed by the Seattle Folk Society, these two black-and-white performances offer unique looks at two blues legends: blind older musicians who spent their lives keeping a musical tradition alive. A stern-looking the Reverend Gary Davis has a finger-picking style that is both spare and stunningly intricate as he plays instrumentals ("Slow Drag," "Candy Man"), spirituals ("I Heard the Angels Singing"), and down and dirty blues songs ("She Wouldn't Say Quit," "Where'd You Get Your Liquor"). Sonny Terry, who spent years partnered with guitarist Brownie McGhee, offers a master class in blues harmonica, accompanying himself on both traditional tunes ("Easy Rider") and originals (the ironically titled "I Got My Eyes on You"). Terry tears it up, alternating wonderfully bent notes with whoops and hollers on "Hootin' the Blues." Though short (an hour), it's an impressive document of a dying musical style. --Marshall FineCustomer Reviews:

Description
Chris Smither has made a terrific lesson for everyone interested in taking traditional blues guitar style and incorporating it into a contemporary setting. Chock full of musical advice, clarity and good humor, this lesson will add powerful licks and interesting ideas to your song accompaniments and blues technique.
You1ll learn the bass-line shuffle groove of "Link of Chain," the sliding harmony figures of "Happier Blue" and a load of great riffs to pull them together (including Chris's trademark use of his feet for rhythm accompanyment). Moving into open D tuning, he gets deeply into "Hold On," with its bluesy vibrato, bends and hammer-ons, while Roly Salley's heart-wrenching "Killin' the Blues" (one of Chris's most requested covers) highlights his ballad accompaniment. Back to standard tuning, Chris takes apart the Skip James-type lick that's at the heart of "Can't Shake These Blues," and then closes with a Delta-style "The Devil's Real."

DVD-Exploring DADGAD Guitar-New Sounds, Textures and Repertoire
Starring: Laurence Juber Manufacturer: Homespun Tapes ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD Similar Items:
ASIN: B0002KWSLC Release Date: 2004-07-01 |
Description
Although DADGAD guitar tuning is most closely associated with the droning, bagpipe-like sounds of Celtic music, Laurence Juber has taken it to a whole new level with his use of beautiful cascading notes and complex harmonies. On this richly detailed lesson, Laurence gives you a complete understanding of how DADGAD works and how, by using it, you can gain a deeper knowledge of the fingerboard and its vast possibilities. You'll discover the distinctive adjacent scale tones and open strings that make it such a joy to play in this tuning, and will learn to go beyond the basic key of D with tunes in F, C and E minor.
Laurence shows you how he uses this tuning in some of his newest and most affecting compositions. His lyrical ballad Still Warm, with its lush harmonies and evocative melody line, gives you a wonderful piece to start your DADGAD explorations. You'll then move on to Silhouette in A minor, revealing the rich harmonies that are not easily found in standard tuning.
In what is perhaps the most fascinating segment of this lesson, Laurence takes the classic Irish ballad Danny Boy and improvises arrangements in D, F and C, discovering the different textures and sonorities that can be found in each key. His brilliance as an arranger for guitar becomes evident as you follow the process of his musically creative mind. Then it's on to Fountain Jumping, a ragtime-like piece in F with a bluesy twist, filled with hammers and pulls that make it a fast and exciting instrumental.
This challenging and fascinating video lesson will certainly open up new and exciting opportunities for your guitar playing, and will allow you to look at the guitar in a whole new way. As Laurence himself puts it, learning DADGAD "gives us a different angle on the guitar -- a different standard".
