4 out of 5 stars Great to see Chet again.......2007-07-01

Chet Atkins is my guitar hero. He is able to cover many great songs from other artists in his own unique way as any fan of his would know and appreciate. His virtuosic skills are very evident on this DVD and enhance his stature as a great guitarist in my mind. He is a delight just as a one man show and you can experience some of that on this DVD too. I saw Chet Atkins in concert many years ago and had almost forgotten what he looked like on stage performing. I didn't forget though his great personality and humor on stage. This DVD has some great performances and it's great also to see Chet's personality and humor here again too. "Stars & Stripes Forever" is one of the most impressive performances. The DVD covers a large period of time. In some cases the footage and audio isn't up to today's standard's but that is understandable. Obviously the later performances are better filmed and have better audio quality. I like the section on Soundstage in 1978 best, which included Stars & Stripes and also at his home studio in 1995. The performances from the Merle Watson Festival in 1992 has a very entertaining performance of "There'll be some changes made". Anyway... long live Chet Atkins.

4 out of 5 stars Chet is Master, Chet is King.......2007-05-07

So many reviews of Chet Atkins music are filled with comments of how bad the video quality is or how cheesy the musical programs were.
With Chet Atkins, the proof is in the pudding.
You just have to see him play and that eliminates all the talk.

This compilation is right in the middle of the time of early video and
embarrasing wardrobe of the late 70's and early 80's; However, Chet Atkins is an inspirational guitar player and when he starts playing it's
a treat to the eyes and ears.

The Soundstage performance of Stars and Stripes Forever alone is worth the price of this video. That is one amazing execution!

Guitar players will appreciate how difficult that first chord of Cascade is, yet Chet Atkins makes it look like a walk in the park.
You need to view Yankee Doodle Dixie more than once to appreciate the guitar arrangement and realize that Chet plays Yankee Doodle and Dixie
at the same time!

Those who play the guitar seriously, those who know how much practice and dedication it takes to get to this level, will enjoy this DVD the most.
Chet Atkins always made it look like butter. It is no exception in this disc.

So, get the video, stop complaining and get to practice.
Chet Atkins Rare Performances should inspire you until your fingers fall off.

5 out of 5 stars A Master Guitarist - A Master Musician.......2002-05-05

Chet Atkins was, is, and always will be the master of guitar. This video starts with Chet at about a 52-years-old and ends at about age 71 displaying even at 71, the absolute, unbelievable, versatility and genius of this man. No matter where he is or what song he plays, he never misses a lick. Though it may be considered vintage or classic by some, it is still very current and tasteful. Anytime one has the chance to view this master at his work, I would suggest this, "don't miss the opportunity." This video shows Chet at his best as always, and one does not need to be a guitarist as myself to appreciate this video over and over again. Here, one can immediately tell that Chet loved his guitar and he loved his profession. The great humbleness and talent this man had is so outspoken as shown in this video-DVD. At the end of each performance, one can only sit astounded and say with a smile, "WOW!" This is truly a great collection for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars A must see for all guitar enthusiasts.......2002-03-04

This video is a masterful compellation of the master's greatest songs. Now, those who have only heard Chet Atkins can see his lightning fast fingers in action.

Even if you are not a Chet Atkins fan in particular, but enjoy good fingerstyle guitar music, this recording is for you. The quality of recording and quality of playing make it a recommended buy for anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Too few clips from the 1950s.......2006-11-10

A very interesting DVD. However, for those that are fond of the earliest Chet Atkins, it is unfortunate that only five pieces from the 1950s have been included, - all the more so as many more clips from that period exist (Frankie & Johnny, Dark Eyes etc.). Maybe it's a matter of copyright, or the non-included videos are too well-known.

5 out of 5 stars Early Gretsch Work.......2006-03-17

Great stuff. I have been trying to figure out how he does what he does for over 40 years. This DVD is Chet lovers treasure, especially if you like his earlier Gretsch work.

3 out of 5 stars the original Atkins diet.......2005-08-09

"Chet Atkins - Rare Performances 1955-75" shows the young guitar player in action during his best years. The performances show him with electric and acoustic guitars in solo, quintet and orchestral situations. From 1955 to 1975, the DVD moves from black and white to color footage. While it is a dream to initially see Chet live, it soon becomes clear that he wasn't much of a live entertainer. While his gentle power is obvious, it doesn't translate so well to the visual medium. Atkins seldom looks at the audience, there is little interaction between him and his fellow musicians and his half-hearted singing falls short of what one might expect from such an innovator and studio gem. Unless the viewer is a guitar aficionado who hangs onto his every move, the video gets old quickly. For such finger picking fans, the DVD offers many quality close-ups to fully appreciate his mastery. Don't get me wrong, "Rare Performances" is precious because it is one of the few video documents of Chet Atkins, just keep your expectations reasonable.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Musician and His Music.......2002-05-05

Chet Atkins was, is, and always will be the master of guitar. This video starts with a very young Chet Atkins and uncovers even then, the absolute genius of this man. No matter where he is or what song he plays, he never misses a lick. Though it may be considered vintage or classic by some, it is still very current and tasteful. Anytime one has the chance to view this master at his work, I would suggest this, "don't miss the opportunity." One can immediately tell from this video that Chet loved his guitar and he loved his profession. This is a great collection for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Guitarist Ever.......2001-08-04

A Chet Atkins set of 'live' performances from his early years up to 1975 includes his signature Gretsch Electric Guitar plus his Classical Guitar and shows demonstrably how he makes that which is very difficult look easy. No guitarist has ever come near!

His sad passing on June 30th 2001 leaves the world poorer and us 'believers' will never forget him.

Description

Learn to play in DADGAD, the popular guitar tuning that gives many Celtic and British Isles instrumentals their special beauty and power. Al Petteway shows you how to play exquisite arrangements using droning bass notes, slides, bends, trills and other guitar tricks to imitate the haunting sounds of harps and pipes.

This wonderful lesson by one of today's most admired fingerstyle players is filled with invaluable insights into playing in Celtic style, from strongly syncopated rhythm strokes to the ringing, harp-like sounds of "cross-string" picking. You'll learn to locate the notes and chords in DADGAD, and how to use the capo to utilize open strings in different keys. Al explains how to play the modal scales that feature strongly in this kind of music, which allow you to improvise within the genre, and he provides important exercises for gaining maximum fluidity in all of your guitar playing.

Best of all, you'll learn to take traditional tunes and make them unique to your own style and abilities. Al teaches five beautiful pieces from his vast repertoire including "Sligo Creek," "Rise Up My Love," "New Year's Day," "On Christmas Night" (a medley) and "Chesapeake."

Taken from kinescopes of performances filmed by the Seattle Folk Society, these two black-and-white performances offer unique looks at two blues legends: blind older musicians who spent their lives keeping a musical tradition alive. A stern-looking the Reverend Gary Davis has a finger-picking style that is both spare and stunningly intricate as he plays instrumentals ("Slow Drag," "Candy Man"), spirituals ("I Heard the Angels Singing"), and down and dirty blues songs ("She Wouldn't Say Quit," "Where'd You Get Your Liquor"). Sonny Terry, who spent years partnered with guitarist Brownie McGhee, offers a master class in blues harmonica, accompanying himself on both traditional tunes ("Easy Rider") and originals (the ironically titled "I Got My Eyes on You"). Terry tears it up, alternating wonderfully bent notes with whoops and hollers on "Hootin' the Blues." Though short (an hour), it's an impressive document of a dying musical style. --Marshall Fine

    Description

Chris Smither has made a terrific lesson for everyone interested in taking traditional blues guitar style and incorporating it into a contemporary setting. He has perfected the art of combining the fingerpicking he first learned from the music of Lightnin' Hopkins, Skip James, Brownie McGhee and other country blues masters with groove-driven original songs that are as current as today's news.

Chris takes apart some of his most requested songs, slowing them down and analysing his arrangements for the learning guitarist. Chock full of musical advice, clarity and good humor, this lesson will add powerful licks and interesting ideas to your song accompaniments and blues technique.

You1ll learn the bass-line shuffle groove of "Link of Chain," the sliding harmony figures of "Happier Blue" and a load of great riffs to pull them together (including Chris's trademark use of his feet for rhythm accompanyment). Moving into open D tuning, he gets deeply into "Hold On," with its bluesy vibrato, bends and hammer-ons, while Roly Salley's heart-wrenching "Killin' the Blues" (one of Chris's most requested covers) highlights his ballad accompaniment. Back to standard tuning, Chris takes apart the Skip James-type lick that's at the heart of "Can't Shake These Blues," and then closes with a Delta-style "The Devil's Real."

    Description

Within the borders of Texas, black music was rich and vital with a particular sound all its own. Mance Lipscomb and Lightnin' Hopkins were two of the greatest blues men to record. Mance was a consummate country blues fingerpicker, while Lightnin' developed a fast jump style that fit well with post war blues. A new transfer from original film masters brings improved sound and picture to these performances. Each DVD/VHS intimately captures the artists and their techniques, communicating the power and eloquence of blues as played by its masters.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, I got to see these guys performing!.......2004-12-08

I fell in love with this genre (i.e., blues) about 5 yrs ago and amongst the various blues artists, Hopkins' and Manscomb's music were the ones that hit the right chord within me.

Watching this DVD is very exciting for me thus, as I've been listening to these guys for a long time now but have not seen till now how they perform their music.

The DVD is very well made. The soundtrack is monoaural though, and certainly not of high fidelity, as the original material came from an old [1969?] performance for the Seattle Folk Society, in a session that was shot in what looks like a bare studio.

The beauty of the performances lie therein though, in the "primitiveness" of the material. It sure is fun to watch Lipscomb singing/playing with minimum bodily movements, as compared to the more animated and lively Hopkins.

My only negative comment is that there's not much story-telling that Hopkins made in between or before the songs, which stories are usually as interesting to hear as the songs themselves.

Just the same, on the overall this is a must-see for all fans of Texas blues.

    Description

Al Petteway continues his excellent lesson with five beautiful and evocative guitar instrumentals in the Celtic style. This time, he covers songs and effects that can be attained through a variety of tunings, including standard, dropped-D, open G and low C.

Al shows you how to create your own arrangements by finding the melody within the chord structure, then fleshing it out with pipe-like drone notes, chord substitutions, moving bass lines, the rhythmic "Scottish Snap" and other Celtic-sounding elements. Embellishment techniques_right hand rolls, hammers, pull-offs, etc._help you turn basic tunes into elegant guitar pieces.

You'll learn wonderful exercises for developing your right- and left-hand speed and dexterity, along with complete arrangements for five beautiful instrumentals: Fy to the Hills in the Morning (Johnny Cope), Light and Airy (a slip jig), the classic Sidh beag sidh mor, Red Haired Boy and Jock O'Hazeldean. Finally, Al pulls all the elements together with his Caledon Wood, a piece that incorporates everything he has taught on both volumes: right hand rhythm patterns, damping effects, harmonics, lyrical and percussive playing, and more.

These videos will give you invaluable insights into the music of one of the world's most accomplished fingerstyle soloists and accompanists. A natural and engaging teacher, Al's music features beautiful renderings of both traditional Irish and Scottish tunes as well as his own Celtic-inspired compositions.

        Description

Although DADGAD guitar tuning is most closely associated with the droning, bagpipe-like sounds of Celtic music, Laurence Juber has taken it to a whole new level with his use of beautiful cascading notes and complex harmonies.

On this richly detailed lesson, Laurence gives you a complete understanding of how DADGAD works and how, by using it, you can gain a deeper knowledge of the fingerboard and its vast possibilities. You'll discover the distinctive adjacent scale tones and open strings that make it such a joy to play in this tuning, and will learn to go beyond the basic key of D with tunes in F, C and E minor.

Laurence shows you how he uses this tuning in some of his newest and most affecting compositions. His lyrical ballad Still Warm, with its lush harmonies and evocative melody line, gives you a wonderful piece to start your DADGAD explorations. You'll then move on to Silhouette in A minor, revealing the rich harmonies that are not easily found in standard tuning.

In what is perhaps the most fascinating segment of this lesson, Laurence takes the classic Irish ballad Danny Boy and improvises arrangements in D, F and C, discovering the different textures and sonorities that can be found in each key. His brilliance as an arranger for guitar becomes evident as you follow the process of his musically creative mind. Then it's on to Fountain Jumping, a ragtime-like piece in F with a bluesy twist, filled with hammers and pulls that make it a fast and exciting instrumental.

This challenging and fascinating video lesson will certainly open up new and exciting opportunities for your guitar playing, and will allow you to look at the guitar in a whole new way. As Laurence himself puts it, learning DADGAD "gives us a different angle on the guitar -- a different standard".
