The "Little Sparrow" will live forever!.......2007-09-16
La Vie en Rose As a young boy I heard a woman singing on my mother's radio. I had no idea who she was and since I did not speak french, had no idea what she was singing about. Just the same, I started to cry. The woman was singing with a broken heart and I could feel my own heart breaking with each word. Thus began my lifelong love affair with Piaf. I bought everything she ever recorded, read every word written. BUT...not until seeing this film and the performance by Marion Cotillard...did I truly understand Piaf. A remarkable singer who was capable of breaking hearts with her voice while her own heart was broken. It is truly a JOY that she recorded as many songs as she did. Because of these recordings..Piaf will live on in our hearts. Because of THIS FILM...you will know Piaf as you never could have before. I will love her always.......Dennis
Exhausting!.......2007-09-13
Don't plan to see this film and then go out for a lively night on the town. You will be so spent after the one hundred forty-one minutes of this gut-wrenching film that when the lights come on at the end, you'll need a minute to figure out where you are, and then additional downtime to process all you've seen. Days later, you'll still be thinking about this slice of life--and Edith Piaf.
Piaf's story is well known to her long-time fans--brought up in a brothel, wrested from the only life she knew by her father so they could join the circus, her teen years on the streets, her "rescue" by a crime figure who gave her the start to her career, and, ultimately, her international success and final illness. She was always frail, sickly, malnourished, and wildly temperamental. She was often on drugs or alcohol, and she was always in search of true love (not finding it till late in her life). All this is depicted here with its horrors and its rare moments of tenderness, the cinematography (Tetsuo Nagata) so brilliant that the realistic, dark settings invite the reader's emotional entry into them and exploration of them.
Marion Cotillard becomes Piaf, a physical likeness that is uncanny in its realism (one wonders if she can ever play another part without conjuring up Piaf's image), and her emotional connection to Piaf's music is total. Her song performances are absolutely flawless, as are her gestures, and the only clue that she is lip-synching is the unmistakable Piaf voice the emerges from her mouth. Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu) as the nightclub owner whose murder by organized crime draws Edith in for questioning, shows the genuine care he has for Edith and the tough face of a man who has seen and done it all.
Marcel Cerdan, the heavyweight boxer who captures her heart (Jean-Pierre Martins) gives her something to live for, besides her music--at least for a while--and it is genuinely affecting here to see how earthy and unaffected he is in her presence. The supporting actors, all French, are outstanding, and few viewers will forget Emmanuelle Seigner, playing prostitute Titine, who cared for Edith as a child.
The film belongs to Cotillard, however, and all aspects of the film, from the brilliant writing of Olivier Dahan (who also directed) and Isabelle Sobelman, to film editing (especially the lip-synching to Piaf's songs), and the sets, costuming, and makeup, are designed to enhance her performance. The film follows no chronology, jumping from her childhood to her old age and then to some of the high points of her career, creating an impressionistic film of some of the signal moments in her life. It is difficult to imagine any biopic that will ever come close to this one in its power, but then, again, it's difficult to imagine any singer who will ever capture the world's imagination in quite the way that Piaf did. n Mary Whipple
The performance of a lifetime!.......2007-09-11
Marion Cotillard has given the performance of a lifetime! I have seen this movie 3 times and if she does not win the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress there is no JUSTICE!
Incroyable and amazing Marion Cotillard!.......2007-08-13
With my family, we saw this movie last July in an independent theater in Monterey, CA. The performance delivered by Marion Cotillard (Taxi 1-2-3, A very long Engagement) was amazing.
I almost thought the actress was Edith Piaf herself reincarnated. Marion had the same familiar and characeristics gestures of the late singer. My parents used to listen to Edith Piaf's songs in the 50s and the 60s. I grew up with her songs. Her recognizable voice is so unique and so Parisian. When I dare to compare Marion Cotillard's performance with some of the big names of Hollywood, this blows many of them away. There may not be any special effects in this movie, but it was far more entertaining than any other movie I have seen this year so far (I have not seen the Bourne Ultimatum yet). Several of my family members have seen La Mome - La Vie en Rose now and there is a deafing unanimity among us.
I hope the movie will be available on August 23 for the U.S., like it is announced on Amazon.fr for France. Unfortunately for those of us living in the U.S., Amazon.fr will released it with a PAL format for Region 2. Let us hope it will be also available for region 1 with the NTSC format.
Enjoy the movie!
La Môme, the french legend coming to North America in Canada and U.S........2007-07-28
La Môme is the best french movie I've seen in the past 3 years. It's very touching to understand La Môme Piaf (Edith Piaf) one of the most legendary voice of the French suburbs and the city of Love Paris.
I will have to be honest with the people who will want to buy it that it's a FRENCH MOVIE in FRENCH LANGUAGE definitely there is subtitles (or I hope there is) but it depend when will the distributor of North America (Canada and U.S.) wakes up and understand the important of such a film.
The story of the infamous singer Edith Piaf is not like all the rock and roll stories of love and drug, it's one of the most dramatic story to show you a singer who struggled through poverty, then blindness, then devastated love with only one thing HER VOICE.
A must seen movie, and for those who know the French language, or at least visited France or even just Europe will be touched as it shifts you from France to New York.
P.S. I do not owe this DVD, I've seen it in France and I'm not sure if the version in North America will be REGION 1 or as usual only the OTHER REGION so that the POWERS THAT BE control the movie industry.
Enjoy!

The life of the definitive French chanteuse, Edith Piaf, is celebrated in this concert/documentary hybrid, Piaf - Her Story...Her Songs. Raquel Bitton, who doesn't so much impersonate Piaf as try to channel the singer through her songs, tells tidbits from Piaf's life between faithful renditions of such classics as "Non je ne regrette rien" ("No Regrets"), "Bravo pour le clown", and of course "La vie en rose." Interspersed with this concert are scenes from a French restaurant, where Bitton has gathered an assortment of people who knew Piaf (including her son and musicians who performed with her) to reminisce about Piaf's tumultuous life and ferocious personality. The result of this cutting back and forth is a bit haphazard--the anecdotes tend to be gossipy and self-indulgent, while Bitton's sketchy narrative of the singer's life (delivered mostly in English) serves more to introduce the songs than to actually tell Piaf's biography. The songs are lovely (though fans may prefer recordings of Piaf herself to a recording of Bitton imitating Piaf) and there are some intriguing scraps of archival footage, including Piaf responding to reporters after being accused of murder and a glimpse of a melancholy Marlene Dietrich at Piaf's funeral. --Bret Fetzer

A moving concert... Raquel Bitton's ode to the legendary Edith Piaf... Lovely DVD.......2006-07-14
Raquel Bitton is a French-American jazz singer who specializes in the French repertoire and has built a reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of the music of Edith Piaf. In 2000, she held a series of concerts across North America in tribute to France's most famous songbird. This DVD is a memento of one such concert, recorded in the Elgin theatre in Toronto, and interspersed with interviews with Piaf's contemporaries, collaborators, friends and relatives, filmed in various bistros and restaurants across France and ending with a memorial visit to Piaf's final resting place at Pere-Lachaise cemetery.
The concert itself includes some of Piaf's most famous songs as well as lesser known ones, preceeded with anecdotes from Piaf's life, from her childhood amidst grinding poverty, to the heights of her success, to her untimely death at age 47, loved and mourned by millions the world over.
Many of Piaf's best songs and especially her delivery of them have always had the unfailing ability to bring tears to the eye and Bitton succeeds in no lesser measure. It is not just her voice which bears a certain similarity to Piaf but her ability to project her very soul through the music that makes her interpretations such a success. It is a moving concert and a moving film as a whole.
The songs featured in the concert are:
1. La goualante du pauvre Jean
2. J'em fous pas mal (I shouldn't care) (Second verse in English)
3. T'es beau tu sais
4. La Noel de la rue
5. Mon Legionaire
6. Enfin le Printemps
7. L'accordeoniste
8. Le vieux piano
9. Bravo pour le clown
10. Milord
11. La foule (Que nadie sepa mi sufrire) (First verse in Spanish)
12. Sous le ciel de Paris
13. Autumn leaves (English version)
14. Mon Dieu
15. Hymne a l'amour (A hymn to love) (First verse in English)
16. Elle a dit
17. Non, je ne regrette rien
18. La vie en rose (English version only)
19. Les Avions sont des Oiseaux (Closing credits) (New song by Francis Lai & Michel Rivegauche)
The film does not include footage of Piaf herself except for one intriguing interview taken from French newsreels after she was suspected of murdering her manager and friend Louis Leplee. Instead it concentrates on what matters most, Piaf's music. Piaf's songs have the rare ability to capture the flavour of an era long gone while somehow remaining absolutely timeless. The songs are just as able to reduce an audience to tears today as they were more than half a century ago.
The film is presented in its original 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen TV). Picture quality is good with sharp images, well rendered colors and deep blacks. Audio is in 2.0 Dolby Surround and Dolby Digital 5.1. The sound is lovely and flatters both voice and orchestral accompaniment. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are provided, including translations of the song lyrics. Strangely the original French lyrics are not included. There are no extras.
Superb film, a must see for Piaf fans.......2006-07-11
I saw "Piaf: her story, her songs" at the Castro Theater in San Francisco with more than a thousand people attending the film, and there were a few hundred more people outside the theater trying to get in to the sold out theater.
It was a superb film, I adored it. Its brilliance comes from the fact that this film about Piaf celebrates her the way her fans long to see her celebrated, through her songs.
Piaf's writers, composers, lovers and friends gathering at a bistro over food and wine and telling intimate stories about their personal relationship with Piaf was quite revealing.
Bitton's performance simply blew me away! I have never felt the emotional power of a singer like that before. Myself along with the entire audience was deeply moved.
It's all in the title "Piaf: her story, her songs", her story told through songs and how brilliantly interpreted!
Raquel Bitton's tribute to Piaf is magical. Her interpretation not imitation stands on its own with Bitton's magnificent renditions that leave you breathless. The emotional grip delivered by Bitton is the essence of the film itself. I could easily imagine that it was the same emotional effect that Piaf had on her audiences which earned her legendary status.
The audience at the Castro theater cried and laughed (and so did I). I am now the proud owner of the DVD which will be a classic forever.
The editorial reviewer mentions that Piaf's son is in the film. Piaf never had a son, he probably meant to say that the son of Marcel Cerdan who was the greatest love of Piaf's life is in the film where he talks about the relationship between his father and Edith Piaf.
Description
Edith Piaf was one of the most popular female singers of all time, with a unique voice and talent that conquered the hearts of admirers around the world. Her life story was truly remarkable: from her birth in 1915 on a policeman's cape, under gaslight, to her extraordinary love affairs and heart-breaking tragedies, she was a true artist that lived to sing. The death of the 'little sparrow' in 1963 was mourned internationally. Now, for the first time, her extraordinary life has been captured on DVD. Four years after her death a documentary was made by French television to commemorate her life. It captured a moment in history that can never be re-created with rare footage of her life, career, loves, and her funeral. It also includes film clips of Edith performing some of her most famous songs, including La vie en rose, A quoi ça sert l'amour, Milord, Mon Dieu, and more. With historic interviews, scenes from her funeral and news reports of the time, it is a one-of-a-kind tribute to an unforgettable artist. Includes four complete bonus audio tracks.
Customer Reviews:
fine biopic--as far as it goes, that is.......2007-08-11
Edith Piaf's contributions to the arts and the details of her life can never be dealt with seriously in any 44 minute video--although this video attempts to do just that. The video, here on DVD, was a 1967 retrospective of Edith Piaf and her life. Unfortunately, while they tried their best to make something worthwhile about Edith Piaf, they did not fully succeed. Huge amounts of details are left out and major issues and triumphs are completely ignored.
Nevertheless, this movie does try. We do get rare footage of Edith performing in concert; this rare footage has value because in the 1950s and early 1960s people simply did not record concerts on film. It just wasn't done. There are many beautiful audio tracks of Edith singing in the background while friends are interviewed about her. We also get a brief interview with Theo Serapo; he was married to Edith at the time that she died. It's touching to see and hear these people speak so fondly of Edith. In addition, the funeral footage demonstrates even more the emotional impact Edith had on so many people.
The sound quality is rather good; but the image quality varies. The interviews from 1967, filmed in black and white, are high quality images with proper lighting and sound equipment being used. The concert footage and a few clips of Edith made by friends unfortunately lack this quality; the images are often rather fuzzy and this frustrates me.
The worst blow to Edith and her fans is that this could have been an excellent springboard for a much more in-depth look at the life and times of Edith Piaf. So much remains unsaid--we see pictures of the boxer she loved so much with newspaper headlines about his death in a plane crash--but heaven forbid we should even be told his name! There is no time devoted to Edith's childhood; and the movie keeps returning to focus on the very last months of Piaf's life when she was remarkably frail. Sigh.
Overall, this documentary runs on the cheap and that makes me feel very sad. It has quality--but only as far as it goes; and that's just not very far at all. I agree with reviewers who write that this is for die-hard fans who already know the details of Piaf's life. If you wish to begin to know about Edith Piaf I would then recommend the recent biopic out in theaters as well as CDs of her wonderful performances.
SPECIAL.......2007-08-01
NOW, NOW, NOW! In this age of hi-tech and instant gratification it is not proper to restore [retouch] everything to pristine quality [imagine tampering with the Mona Lisa because it looks too drab!]. Sure this DVD has flaws [the horrid Anglo dubbing should go - keep the original French and give us subtitles]. However, this is pure nostalgia, the flavor and essence of Piaf and her amours [the breathtaking Marcel, cut in his prime] - then Theo.
Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Jean Marais, Cocteau, Romy Schneider, Alain Delon, Jean Paul Belmondo, etc. we get glimpses of the not so distant past - this is a perfect mood piece, instead of an 'in your face' documentary.
A must have for the serious collector.
a terrible disappointment -- and a great disservice to Piaf!.......2007-06-17
the description of this dvd is so misleading. when i watched it, i couldn't figure out what was going on, who the man she loved was, what she died from and whatever happened in her life, early and late. there was just no information at all. what was great was her performances --- but i was hoping for a real biographical film. this made no sense at all. and the english overdubbing was horrible; subtitles would have worked much better. although the whole production was haphazard and uninformative and confusing. i was so disappointed. but i liked the songs at the end, even without any visuals. this did not do the great piaf any justice at all and someone who knew nothing about her would come away still knowing nothing about her.
zero narrative - horrible dubbing = one star.......2006-12-01
this dvd was extremely disappointing. as the other reviews have noted - there is virtually no structure or narrative whatsoever. if my girlfriend wasn't sitting next to me telling me edith's life story - i would have had no absolutely idea what was going on. clips are shown with zero context. they are not identified and they don't seem to be in any particular order.
all of that would be bad enough but to make matters even worse - they use mediocre dubbing for the interviews with edith as well as with the interviews with her famous friends and admirers. so instead of hearing the speaker's real emotional inflections - you just hear an overly earnest american actor speaking for them.
the low point comes when they show a clip of edith clowning around with her piano player (he could be someone famous in his own right but then again - how would i know? this film certainly isn't going to tell me.) anyway - they dub in a woman's voice so edith "speaks" in english. then when she starts to sing they cut back to her actually singing in french. then when she stops to make an aside - they cut back to the dubbing. it's like a saturday night live parody.
there is also some english narration - not enough to clarify anything mind you - but even here - the producers didn't bother to take out the french narration so you have this muffled french speaker talking underneath the american speaker.
if it's not already obvious - this english version was done about as cheaply and as incompetently as possible. the people who made this should be ashamed. too bad. my girlfriend is french and she was so excited not just to see the dvd herself, but also to introduce me to the great edith piaf.
needless to say - it was a failure on both counts.
by the way - i think it would be possible and certainly appropriate to make a far more satisfying film from the same footage by simply adding some basic narrative and using subtitles instead of dubbing. it would still need major overhaul to be a great film but with just these two changes - you would certainly be up to three stars.
Edith Piaf - A Passionate Life.......2005-07-25
I must agree with Mr. Mahan. Edith Piaf was born December, 1915
and passed away October 10, 1963. Mr. Cashen must read more of
her life, and he will discover this.
I liked this DVD. I have it in French on VHS, and, am bi-lingual
so I was able to understand it. On the DVD the voice-overs do
change some of the french: however, this is necessary. If the
DVD was translated exactly, it would not make any sense. The
maker of this film (Marcel Blistene) made it in 1967 from film
clips available, and also from direct interviews. He did a great
job. The film clips he used were from an era when high-tech. was
not available, therefore, there were bound to be some that were
not too clear. I have other VHS videos, all in French, as well
as numerous books (all in French). I was a member of "Les Amis
d'Edith Piaf" located in Paris.(Along with a small musuem). The
musuem is located in a small apartment of the secretary of the
association which has members in the thousands. It can be visited by appointment only. The curator/secretary speaks only
French. He knew Edith Piaf and almost all of the people in the
various videos. His knowledge of her life is vast, and he him-
self has written a book which came out around 1997 or so and is
extremely informative. Marcel Blistene was a French Jew who
wanted to make a tribute to Edith - as she had helped him tre-
mendously during WWII in as much as arranging for him to be
hidden, squirreled out of Paris, plus supplying tremendous
amounts of money to do so. She did the same for many others,
including Michel Emer, who was also a French Jew and wrote many
of her hit songs, the first being L'accordeoniste, which is
still popular today in France. (It first came out in 1939).
I strongly suggest that if anyone is interested in her life,
they read as much as is available, and if possible watch other
VHS and/or DVD's that may be available. The only book that is
not accurate, is the one written by Simone Bertault, who claimed-to be her half-sister - which was a wishful fabrication on her
part and it extremely scathing in many of the chapters, so much
so as to be very questionable as to the authenticity. Simone's
book has been challenged and debunked in numerous other books.
All in all, I say BRAVO to this DVD and Marcel Blistene, who is
now deceased.
