There is no denying it: Jimi Plays Berkeley ain't The Last Waltz. Visually, Peter Pilafian's direction and camerawork look like a student film compared to Scorsese's rock masterpiece. Instead of thanking fans and formally saying farewell to the road, Hendrix's manager Michael Jeffery created an exploitation film to simply squeeze as much cash he could out of the overworked guitarist. Despite the cheesy documentary footage, clips of silly protesters, butchered songs ("Hear My Train A Comin'" is literally chopped in half!), and the continuously shaky head shots, Jimi Plays Berkeley is great. Why? Because of Hendrix's flawless performance with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass. The band never sounded better live, and Eddie Kramer's 5.1 surround remix on the DVD really lifts the sound to a new level. In addition, the DVD includes the entire audio recording of Jimi Plays Berkeley: 2nd Set, arguably Hendrix's best live performance ever recorded. It's just perfect. --Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars but only because of the Berkeley second set as audio bonus.......2007-04-09

Together with the bonus live concert the price isn't bad then, although I'd hesitate paying full-price for this disc. That's because like others have mentioned the songs are really chopped up, so if you know these songs it can be a frustrating experience. Some great moments are here, like the complete 'Johnny B. Goode', most of a brilliant 'Voodoo Child', possibly the best song here, and some brilliant moments from a heavily abbreviated 'Machine Gun'. Possibly what disappoints most people is to hear and watch one of Hendrix's all-time brilliant performances, the great version of 'Hear My Train A Comin', jerking clumsily in a few minutes of horrible editing through it's complete 12 minutes or so. 'Lover Man' goes directly from intro to outro, possibly to include a short, blistering guitar solo at the end, and the editing of other songs is also quite shocking, enough that one could be forgiven for thinking one was viewing one of the failed entries in a student film competition where each entrant was given footage of two Hendrix concerts and asked to produce a 49 min film. However, I vote this 5 stars on the basis of it being one of Hendrix's best concerts with many great moments, as well as it being an interesting historical document nonetheless. Note that you need a DVD player for the audio, it won't play on a CD player. I tried to rip the audio to get it on a CD for more convenient listening and to convert it to MP3 but failed. Any ideas on how this can be done can be entered as a comment to me in the box below and will be greatly appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars A reminder of the irreplaceable........2007-03-09

The best way to bring back the sixties and early seventies, the best time of my life, is to watch and listen to Hendrix and a few others. The sound on the new DVDs is incredible. Altogether an uplifting experience for the '68 generaton.

5 out of 5 stars "JIMI PLAYS BERKELEY" CONTAINS SOME OF THE GREATEST PERFORMANCES IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!.......2006-09-25

I will be doing a review on the historic legendary classic DVD concert entitled "Jimi Plays Berkeley" by the late great Jimi Hendrix. I will also be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible. Before I begin, I would highly suggest that you read my other reviews on Jimi's historic landmark concerts at the "Monterey Pop Festival" on 18 June 1967, the "Woodstock Festival" on 18 August 1969 and the "Isle of Wight Festival" on 30 August 1970. They are all long reviews but they contain a lot of information on Jimi that you might find interesting. I do hope that you will read and enjoy all three. It would also help me shorten this long review and not have to add all that information from my previous three reviews in this review.

For me personally, this marks the fourth review I have written on Jimi Hendrix's legendary concert series which focus's on some of his most memorable and unforgettable performances in Rock n' Roll history. "Jimi Plays Berkeley" was one of at least four concerts that were either fully or partially filmed during Jimi's final 1970 tour. These films are as follows: "Jimi Plays Berkeley" 30 May 1970, "Live at the Atlanta Pop Festival" 4 July 1970, "The Rainbow Bridge concert" 30 July 1970 and the "Isle of Wight Festival" 30 August 1970. In my opinion, "Jimi Plays Berkeley" was the WORSE of the four in the since that this 49 minute documentary was unprofessionally filmed and badly spliced together. The ONLY thing that saved this film (and WHY I am giving this documentary 5 stars) was Jimi's two combined performances at the Berkeley Community Theater on 30 May 1970. I only wished that the camera crew would have had enough common sense and captured BOTH concerts in their entirety on film.

Jimi's live Berkeley performances on this DVD edition highlight some of the greatest versions of Jimi's songs that were ever recorded. Jimi would perform some of his most unforgettable non-stop SLOW AND EXPLOSIVE, KICKING AND FAST ROCKING songs such as: "Johnny B. Goode" (EXCELLENT! A REAL ROCKER! Jimi has arrived AGAIN! Jimi's great tribute to Chuck Berry. a KICKIN' song done the Jimi Hendrix way. Great solo.), "Hear My Train A Comin'" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! BREATHTAKING! Great slow Blues song with an unforgettable solo by Jimi.), "I Don't Live Today" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! Another GREAT ROCKER!), "Machine Gun" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! BREATHTAKING! Jimi actually brings the Vietnam war to the Berkeley audience and fires shots through his violent and explosive guitar which results in a special delivery of a great breathtaking solo to the crowd by Jimi.), "Purple Haze" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! A great version that TRULY ROCKS! Besides "Woodstock," this song may very well be the BEST version Jimi ever recorded. A "Purple Haze" in a "Daze" indeed.), "The Star Spangled Banner" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! UNFORGETTABLE! BEAUTIFUL! ANOTHER GREAT SOLO OF OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM done the Jimi Hendrix way.) and "Voodoo Child" (Slight Return) (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! One of my all-time favorites. Jimi wrote and sings this song with REAL meaning like he's really cursed.)

As an added bonus, in addition to the original "Jimi Plays Berkeley" documentary, this special edition features an AUDIO ONLY, NEVER BEFORE RELEASED PRESENTATION of Jimi's COMPLETE Berkeley second set performance mixed in full glorious 5.1 surround sound. The audio-only bonus concert recordings from Jimi's second Berkeley set contains the following songs: (1.) "Pass It On" (Straight Ahead) (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! Great song.), (2.) "Hey Baby" (New Rising Sun) (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! BEAUTIFUL slow song.), (3.) "Lover Man" (Jimi's answer to B.B. King's classic "Rock Me Baby." EXCELLENT! UNBELIEVABLE!), (4.) "Stone Free" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! A REAL ROCKER!), (5.) "Hey Joe" (EXCELLENT! One of Jimi's best versions ever recorded.), (6.) "I Don't Live Today" (OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! ANOTHER GREAT ROCKER!), (7.) "Machine Gun" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! INCREDIBLE! BREATHTAKING! A GREAT SLOW ROCKER! Jimi and his guitar present the Vietnam war to the Berkeley crowd in such a explosive and violent manner unimaginable resulting in firing machine guns through his explosive electric guitar and a explosive breathtaking solo by Jimi.), (8.) "Foxey Lady" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! Jimi's trademark song, a great version.), (9.) "The Star Spangled Banner" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! UNBELIEVABLE! UNFORGETTABLE! Another KICKING version of our National Anthem done as always, the Jimi Hendrix way.), (10.) "Purple Haze" (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! INCREDIBLE! UNBELIEVABLE! Still left in a "Purple Haze" for many "Daze." Besides the "Woodstock" version, this may be by far the best live version Jimi ever recorded.) and (11.) "Voodoo Child" (Slight Return) (EXCELLENT! BREATHTAKING! UNBELIEVABLE! OUTSTANDING! One of my all-time favorites. GREAT BREATHTAKING solo by Jimi.) JIMI WAS DEFINITELY ON FIRE FOR THESE BERKELEY GIGS. Another great example of Jimi rising to another level and pushing the limits and beyond with his guitar resulting in producing some of the greatest sounds and unimaginable effects.

The "Jimi Plays Berkeley" documentary and the audio-only bonus concert does capture some of Jimi's greatest performances ever recorded. In my opinion, "Jimi Plays Berkeley" contains some of the greatest performances in Rock n' Roll history. Without a doubt, these memorable Berkeley gigs are DEFINITELY one of ROCK'S GREATEST MOMENTS DURING ONE OF ROCK N' ROLL'S FINEST HOURS. One of the many great talents that Jimi possessed was that all of the same songs he performed live over and over again at different concerts through the years, (songs such as "Purple Haze" and "Foxey Lady") NEVER SOUNDED THE SAME. This documentary film may not have shown both performances in their entirety, but it is all that is available to us for now. According to the attached liner book with this DVD edition, almost the last paragraph near the last page, "Unfortunately, none of the film's prized outtakes were turned over to the Hendrix family by the previous administration that had controlled the guitarist's legacy for more than two decades. Perhaps they may surface someday and help further reveal Jimi's extraordinary command and vitality."

In closing, Jimi Hendrix left his mark in Rock n' Roll history indefinitely and will forever always go down in music history as the GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED. There is no other. A rare naturally gifted SELF-TAUGHT guitar genius like Jimi comes along only once in a lifetime. There will NEVER be another Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for reading my long review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews when time permits. JIMI LIVES! LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Rock out always. Take care, J.L.

5 out of 5 stars I was there..........2006-06-30

I was at this show (second set)...a 14-year old Berkeley hippy kid...and it was awesome!

This was one of the first rock concerts at the Berkeley Community Theater (which was also the auditorium for Berkeley High School), and security was minimal at best, which accounts for the scenes of people breaking windows to sneak into the sold out concert.

I remember arriving and waiting outside...when the first set let out, the audience was clearly blown away. The only thing I remember anyone saying is "wow..." And when the second set was over, our reaction was exactly the same.

So the movie doesn't show the whole concert, many songs are cut up, the camera work is jerky, etc. So what? This is a documentary of one of Hendrix's finest live performances. And the inclusion of the audio tracks from the second set is well worth it...you really get a chance to hear what an incredible blues guitarist Hendrix was.

About the Berkeley riot footage...the concert took place almost exactly one year after the battle over People's Park, when the cops fired buckshot at protestors in the street, killing one person, blinding another, and sending scores to the hospital. So there's something fitting about contrasting the riots with the bliss of the Hendrix concert.

As for the protestors outside the theater showing Woodstock...it never really stopped people from seeing the movie. The theater was right next to a little redneck bar, which explains the heated arguments outside the theater.

2 out of 5 stars I should have listened to the other reviews.......2007-01-24

I read all the reviews on this DVD, but went ahead and bought it anyway. Other than the live footage and the "Only you can rock me" promo video, what a waste of some hard earned cash. I know that UFO was never that big and probally needed the cash on this one, but come on. You know you are in trouble when on the back of the DVD it says that this is unauthorized. Warning sign right there. Other than 2 people they interviewed, I had no idea who these other people were. Nick Tauber (producer of Marillion's Fuguzi) and Malcome Dome is a magazine writer ot the only names I knew. Dont waste you money. But you have to wonder, if Pete Way was on this DVD, how is it unauthorized?

IT'S COOL TO SEE & HEAR MICHAEL SCHENKER IN THE RAW......CLIPS FROM WHEN ALBUMS WERE NOT OVERPRODUCED AND TRUE TALENT PREVAILED..............

2 out of 5 stars What a disppointment.......2006-11-03

All I can say is thank goodness for Netflix. I'm glad I rented this instead of just outright buying it. Although it was good to see some of the older footage, I wish that it was a concert of some kind in it's entirety. As for the interviews they were boring and not very informative. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2006-10-10

I was hoping to see some concert footage of early UFO but, didn't get to see a single song played in its entirety! BS commentary, etc. fill most of this DVD. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

4 out of 5 stars re: Well worth every penny.......2006-06-16

As a long time Schenker fan and at one time personal friend of Michael back in the late 80's, I can honestly say this was a vanity piece put together by Pete Way for $$$. That's why only HE is interviewed from the band. No one else knew this was being put together. I will clarify one thing for all the reviews who wanted to the entire concert shown in pieces on "Too Hot to Handle". That concert does not exist in its entirety. Only clips remain and most are shown in "Too Hot..." Michael employed me to research archives worldwide back in 1988 to find out if the entire concert existed. I scoured records of over 80 video and film archives in 5 countries searching for a copy of the entire show. In fact some of the footage I unearthed made it's way onto the "Too Hot..." documentary. I am the one who actually found the full promo for "Only You Can Rock Me" seen in this DVD. It was found in the film archives of WDR-TV in Germany. No one knew it existed anymore because it was mislabeled in WDR-TV. There is more concert footage from 1975 that exists of the classic lineup - runs about 40min in total. Color 16mm film footage. I am one of the few who have it. Something I unearthed for the band in a Japanese film archive in 1989.

This DVD was put together basically without the bands consent although they do get their royalty checks from it. It is worth getting a great copy of the DKRC footage - since it is one of the best filmed shows from the band with Michael. Luckily DKRC Productions has kept all of their footage over the years and taken good care of it. I believe they are preparing some DKRC shows to either go to DVD or for syndication on cable. Seems Dick Cavett re-releasing his Rock n Roll shows sparked an idea in them.

If you buy this DVD for one reason (well two) its for the DKRC footage and to put some well needed cash in Michael's pocket. After what he's been through personally and financially in the last few years - he needs it. Go Michael!

CLASSIC HEEP LIVE FROM THE BYRON ERA (URIAH HEEP)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great if thats all there is.......2007-05-21

I'm not detailed in my information vs. the the other reviews. My first introduction to Uriah Heep, was back in the early '70s. Circa "Salisbury" "Very 'Eavy Very Umble" "Look at yourself" "Demons and Wizards". This video is edited alot, but for any Heep fan, this is a great collectors Item to have in any collection. While watching it, i thought of things like, "Wish it were remastered" on the video, and it is a little spread apart. Overall, its enjoyable to watch.
I had a chance to see them Live in when i was in the Navy stationed in San Diego back in ' 74, but couldn't go. I think i still remember how mad i was.
In closing, i also wonder why, Uriah Heep never went on a live performance tour for their "Demons and Wizards" record release. Imagine a live performance reunion Tour, with 2007 technology in lighting and sound, how fantastic that would be if David Byron was still alive. Although Ken Hensley would do great. This video "Live from the Byron Era" is worth the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars 4 Stars for the Heep Fan - 3 for Everyone Else.......2007-04-13

OK, I think I can provide some background here. I don't disagree with any of the other reviews. The video and audio quality is just ok, but there are good reasons for that.

1)Budokan -The Budokan video was obviously cut and edited. The audio for all three tracks is lifted right from the commercially available Uriah Heep live cd (recorded in Birmingham, UK), and the video is cut to match the audio. Any Heep fan from way back will pick this up right away (I wore out 3 vinyl copies of Uriah Heep Live, so every note and nuance is permanently etched in my memory). The edit itself is not bad, but if you watch closely you can catch spots where you hear Byron's vocals, but in the video he is not singing. They probably had the Budokan video with horrible, unsalvagable audio, and decided to replace the audio and edit to make it usable. But as a previous reviewer said, this is probably all that was available, so better to have this than nothing at all. No mention of any of this in the liner notes.

2) 1974 - Shepperton (sp?). I distinctly remember seeing the exact same video on Don Kirshner's rock concert in 1974, and it was my introduction to them. It looks as though the band recorded and produced this and gave it to DKRC to run. The video has a second or third generation feel to it, but it looks ok. They were supporting Wonderworld, and the band is just ok here. Some of the same shots are used over and over again (Mick Box snarling into the camera)and some of the edits are off, especially with Byron's singing. The lyrics on So Tired are just horrible (who could sing that with a straight face), but this was my first exposure to Heep way back when so it was good to see this again.

3)Return to Fantasy 1975 - Don Kirschner's Rock Concert - I saw this when it aired as well, and taped it on my little portable cassette player. This looks like it was recorded at a studio specifically for the show. Frankly, Byron's stage presence is clumsy and obnoxious here, although he sings well. Future Asia frontman and bassist John Wetton joined on this tour. The band sounds better here than the 74 show, although Mick Box is playing with a hugh cast on his right wrist. Sound and video are decent, given its age.

Quite frankly, unless cans of previously undiscovered video show up in someone's basement, this is all that exists from the group in their classic era, so it does no good to complain, just be thankful it exists and you can watch it. Perfect, no.....but pretty good. The July Morning montage is good as well....clips spliced from various origins and various venues..I hadn't seen this before and it is well done.

2 out of 5 stars Buy this only after reading this full disclosure..........2006-10-29

I have to assume the other reviewers were watching a different DVD, otherwise they have real low standards. I gave it one more star than it deserves b/c a true fan still needs to purchase it. Only because there really is no other footage available from what I read...

I am a huge fan of Rock, and I rely heavily on these reviews when exploring bands I haven't heard before. I.e. Budgie, Elf, Colosseum, etc. But I have never written a review before until now. I feel I must write this review to offset all the positive I've heard concerning this DVD. The reviews and liner notes really got my expectations high, only to be disappointed. I wouldn't feel so bad if I knew what to expect.

Now, by no means am I telling you NOT to buy it, just to know what your getting into so you don't have the same false expectations that I had going into viewing this DVD. I am a huge Heep fan. My first intro to The Heep was back in the early eighties when I picked up a radio promo copy of "Innocent Victim". After that great sonic explosion, I graduated to even better LPs (cassettes at that time) such as "Look At Yourself", "Demons and Wizards", "Classic Heep Live", "Wonderworld", I could go on and on... I'm also a huge Deep Purple fan (go figure), so my musical standards were set pretty high when it comes to concert DVDs. I have a few DP DVDs and love them all. When reading the DP reviews for their DVDs, I learn that some aren't the best quallity footage; some black and white, some poor camera angles, etc... When I read the reviews and the DVD sleeve for this Uriah Heep Classics Live video, I'm led to believe this is the greatest find since King Tut's tomb. THAT IT'S NOT!!!

What it IS, is some kind of a poor concert fantasy sequence that I could have done better if I were to fall asleep with a Heep CD playing and DREAMED I were at a concert. At least the audio would sound better. The notes say the sound had been remastered. I think by some 14 year old fan in his basement maybe. The sound is mediocre at best. Also, it's not until track 8 or so at the U.S. show, that the video and audio are actually in sinc. The whole first half of the DVD is filled with what seems to be cut up video clips from some shows put in sinc with the audio from other shows. Many video clips are repeated over and over and slow motion is used when they can't find video to match. I was so disappointed with what I was seeing and hearing, I had to pop out the disc to see if it was truly the same title to confirm I didn't just get ripped off. The U.S. footage looks like they were performing at a high school gymnasium... this from one of the greatest arena bands in the world at the height of their success?! "Shady Lady" is the best track on the DVD in regards to video quality and video to audio sinc.

Now I must get started on the "great" David Byron. I enjoy what he did on the studio albums, but my expectations were heightened after reading how important he was to Heep and what a great front man he was. I expected the master showman. When I think great front men, my standards are high; i.e. Paul Rodgers, Ian Gillian, Coverdale, David Lee Roth, even Freddie Mercury. David Byron is a ridiculously dressed Freddie-wanna-be, which would be OK if he was a great singer/performer which he's not. He is a good singer and when it comes to performing, he's a pretender. Now granted this is a small sampling and I'm too young to have had a chance to see him live, in person myself. Far be it for me to speak ill of the dead, I really hope someone that has actually witnessed him live, can prove me wrong.

Now, I know you may be thinking this isn't worth your hard earned cash. That's only partly true. If you're a casual fan or someone just getting introduced to the great Uriah Heep, you'll want to pass on this one. If you are a long time fan like me, you NEED this DVD b/c there is no better option, as they say, it's better than nothing. As a die hard fan, we like to "will" it to be better than what it is, but that only works if you have a strong imagination. But then I guess you could watch a better show in your dreams. Only buy this DVD if you can find a cheap used copy. Don't waste your hard earned cash on a new copy at full price, you'll just be disappointed and have buyers remorse.

As lovers of rock music, there are certain things we just have to accept; There will never be new recordings that sound as good, warm, and pure as The Stones "Out Of Our Heads" or Beatles "Rubber Soul", Metallica will never be what they used to be on "Master Of Puppets", there will never be a perfect, full, uncut video copy of Deep Purple MkII circa 1972, and there will never be quality concert footage of Uriah Heep from the `70s...

P.S. there is one more reason to spend a few dollars on this video, to see Mick Box play lead with a broken arm/wrist during the U.S. show...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent performances - poor to fair video quality.......2006-07-05

This is rare footage that any Heep fan will want to obtain. The sound quality is often poor, but the performances are quite good. You can really get a glimpse of how good they were.

5 out of 5 stars Un clásico!!!.......2006-03-10

1 out of 5 stars The Concert Is Great, But this DVD is not the Concert.......2006-08-27

I was fooled. When I saw this title, I bought immediately. Especially, there is no hint in the outer covers of what to expect. You have to watch it ALL first to discover you ve been fooled. You don't even have the right to get angry on the band, there is a note that the movie is not authorized by Deep Purple.

    1 out of 5 stars Totally missleading - 0 stars.......2006-08-18

Like other reviewers, I think this DVD is a bluff. The appealing title (those of us who still are waiting to SEE & HEAR such concert masterpiece can only express a complete disappointment at this DVD) does not reflect the inside. The whole thing is missleading. One appreciates the music lessons given by those so-called experts appearing on the DVD, but that content is not what the average customer wants and/or expects... unless it is in the Appendix of the DVD as "learn more about the group..." or something like that. The cover jacket of the DVD should explicitly read what it is and not mistake the reader. One thing I have learnt: I will never buy anything from this "Rock Milestones" or whatever editors... They are taking us for fools.

I wish I would have read the comments before I wasted my money. This is a very deceiving piece of junk.A bunch of editorial Boobs telling us what we already know. I thought this was REALLY Made in Japan. The most footage you will get is about 20 seconds of songs at best and the rest is trash.
Do not waste your money. Hopefully one day we will get the real thing.

No, because there aren't any! didja think bush is a liar? the guys that promoted this album are worse! The marketers of this dvd are unscrupulous, methodical, deceivers. This dvd ranks #1 as far as being the greatest ripoff of all times. You are a loser if you buy it.I don't usually offer reviews but i felt compelled to inform potential buyers not to buy this junk. Hopefully you will be able to buy this album in a dollar store as a buy one get one free special, and you still will be unhappy!I bet I could sue them for false advertising, i can't say enough bad things without being vulgar.

    2 out of 5 stars Too much critical retrospective--not enough music. . . .......2006-12-29

I wish I could agree with the previous reviewer, but I cannot. There are some wonderful clips/segments of the band, but was ruined by the responses and constant bantering of the writers, journalists and critics. The producers of this DVD did not take into account that maybe--just maybe--the viewer has enough musical/critical/common sense to distinguish the contributions of Rodgers, Kossoff, Kirke, and Fraser. If I wanted a rehash of Kossoff's drug problems, all I had to do was research the material myself. The rare live radio performances would have been so enjoyable if there wasn't the bantering throughout.

The bonus tracks were enjoyable because there wasn't any commentary throughout the performances--thank goodness!

So--should you purchase the DVD? It depends on what you are looking for in a Free retrospective. I received it as a gift for Christmas--and am highly disappointed with the content.

5 out of 5 stars Free --to do as I please!.......2006-07-11

I loved it. I bought this and Argent, which was also great. This one takes each member of the band and shows how they contributed to the band individually. It gives some great examples, actual and demonstrated. Mainly of Paul Kossoff's incredible licks, which just seem to flow from him, but also of Paul Rodgers vocals, Andy's bass and Simon's drumming. An all around view of rocks all but forgotten powerhouse. We all know what happend next. Play on, Mr. Kossoff. We miss you!

1 out of 5 stars review of Pink Floyd.......2007-01-10

This is a history of Pink Floyd, it is not a concert, although there are pieces of songs in it. There are stuffy British journalists venting their opinions of the group. I felt I paid way too much for way too little Floyd.
I could care less about what some nose in the air journalist thinks, I want to see and hear Pink Floyd when I pay my money!

If you're looking for a good visual history of Pink Floyd, this

3 out of 5 stars Nice review, but the cover promises more than you get !!!.......2006-07-14

With so many Pink Floyd reviews on the market it may be difficult to choose. It is a review and does not contain full length songs or interviews. Although promised on the box, the songs mentioned on the back are without exeption, just clips from the songs...

As an audiophile the most anoying lie on the box is the DTS and 5.1 DD logo's, it is just a 2 channel audiotrack which through Dolby Pro Logic II can produce surround sound, but only analogue. Logically, this is not acceptable and an insult to potential buyers.

I haven't read through the whole booklet yet, it is 138 pages of background information, some nice photo's, it seems a rather complete discography. Basically the story told on the discs is the story in the booklet.

The biggest plus is that the whole era of Pink Floyd from start until Live8 is covered. But then again, Pink Floyd is not yet finished, Gilmour and Waters are out on their seperate solotours and today, July 14th, could have been a reunion of the 4 most important Pink Floyd members at the Magny Cours Festival in France where Roger Waters Dark Side of the Moon Solo concert. David Gilmours own solo tour cluttered up the agenda. Possibly some other personal reasons for all 4 members may have had influence as well.

Anyhow, it may mean that a complete review can only be presented if after Syd Barret's passing last friday, july 7th, also David or Roger passes on. Let's hope that doesn't happen anytime soon, but until then Pink Floyd isn't over yet.

My verdict, a rip-off 1 star for soundquality, an ok 3 stars for content and a good 4 stars for the packaging. All together it doesn't add up to more than 3 stars...

5 out of 5 stars great look at my favourite band!.......2006-05-09

A great in depth look at one of my all time favourite bands. THey were a little before my time, but big bro was a big fan, so got it them. This book and the dvds tell are a great introduction to the band and their music. And for what it is worth my bro, the Floyd fan, rates it as well, and he knows his stuff.

This is the independent critical guide to the music of the Who in the crucial years when the legendary Keith Moon was in the band.

This was the classic Who line up of Daltrey, Townshend, Moon and Entwistle which produced a stunning array of all-time legendary music ranging from the first hit singles to the superb rock classics from the seventies.

This is the ultimate review of the music of a band which are still seen by many as the best ever to come out of Britain.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but the interlace lines seem severe.......2006-06-20

I haven't watched all of this yet, but I like what I've seen and heard so far. Interesting interviews and old footage, but as I said in my title, you can see the interlace lines! Quite possibly they doubled up the vertical lines to make it progressive or they got the fields backwards. I'll have to sample some into my editing software and reverse the fields and see what happens.

Pretty low-budget production, but as I said before, quite entertaining nonetheless.

I give it only four stars mainly for the poor video quality. No wonder it says it's unauthorized on the back!

    For fantatics and completionists only.

BAD COMPANY - INSIDE BAD COMPANY 1974-1982 (BAD COMPANY)

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Bad Company entusiasts only.......2006-03-03

Interesting, but how many times can you watch anyone doing a review. A good item for the true Bad Company fan who (no pun intended) can't get enough of Paul Rodgers.

The best parts of course are the live performances taken from Don Kirshners Rock Concert. While there isn't a complete song on the DVD there are a couple of clips that aren't too short and enjoyable and it's good to see what the band looked like back in their prime.

I saw Bad Company at Madison Square Garden on their Run with Pack tour and I love to see a complete concert or at least some complete songs from the band from their early days. I can only hope that Don Kirshner releases his shows on DVD some day soon. I don't know of any other video of the band from this time period.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad documentary, but no bonus footage.......2005-08-18

This is a worthwhile documentary from the standpoint of covering material on BAD COMPANY's first two albums; discussion of later albums is given short shrift and trails off very quickly, perhaps because the producers had no footage from later albums to support the discussions. Nevertheless, the performance clips from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert circa '74 are very good, albeit shrunken to compensate for the wide-screen presentation, which is a real shame.

Important Note: I must emphasize that these are CLIPS! No complete performances of any song are ever shown on this DVD.

Also worth noting, some of the interview sections contain intemittant amplified noise, at least on Dolby stereo/surround track. This is rather disconcerting and may make you think that your audio system has developed problems, but the distortion was apparently recorded accidentally during the taping of certain interviews, so it comes and goes during various segments. However, it smacks of shoddy production values & QC that this wasn't corrected in post.

The best parts of this documentary next to the all-to-brief performance clips are the interview segments with Simon Kirke (Free/Bad Co., drums) and the various instrumental demonstrations showing how the songs were written and played; these are interesting even if you aren't an aspiring guitarist.

Otherwise, this Classic Rock Productions release (AKA Classic Rock Direct; Music Reviews Limited) is pretty much a wash. The energetic performance footage is quite good, what there is of it, but unfortunately there isn't nearly enough of that. Had all of the clipped performances been included in their entirity as a BONUS, formated for full screen (4:3), it might've elevated this from an okay documentary to an indispensible, must-have historical collectable. Alas, this is not the case.

That's why I consider this Inside/Critical Review only worth about 2 & 1/2 stars (for fans of Bad Co.) to perhaps 3 stars for those curious, who never had the opportunity to see this group in their prime and would like to know what the fuss is all about. It's a good enough starting point, like an hors d'oeuvre with lots of garnish, but less substance than the expected main course.

MASTERS FROM THE VAULT (DEEP PURPLE)

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars It's just a total mess..........2006-02-16

Im not a kid, I just clicked that so I could write a review.

First off, let me say that I am normally not that opinionated, so i dont write reviews often, but this DVD was such a disappointment that it needs to be said.

Now i purchased this dvd for 20 some dollars, I opened the DVD, There was no booklet or anything - I guess I set my standards too high after seeing the 2-disc Led Zep DVD. I was excited to see some live footage of Deep Purple, one of my favorite bands. I play guitar myself and expected to see some fancy Blackmore solos and some of my fav songs played live, and I got that - sort of.

This was my experience for the solo in Child in Time:
...As the song slowly builds up pace...the guitar gets louder...the drums hit harder, Gillan shrieks louder, everything
is going well as I become pumped for the solo. Then, Ritchie starts playing and all of a sudden THE CAMERA MOVES AND SHOWS ROGER GLOVER!!! IM SORRY, BUT WHEN RITCHIE IS PLAYING A GUITAR SOLO I DO NOT WANT TO WATCH THE BASSIST!!! This is not the only time this happens either, in almost every song, something similar happens.

Ultimately, I was extermely unsatisfied and this short DVD left me hungry - the Deep purple footage clocks in at only about 40 minutes, the rest is Gillans band doing DP songs. (thats not why i bought the DVD, but it IS there if you want to watch it...)
Well, I guess the only thing bearable is Mandrake Root, which alone is not worth the 20 dollar price tag. Your money would be better spent on the DP California '74 show (only 10 bucks), or just but the Led Zeppelin DVD if you want to see a good show for the same price.

1 out of 5 stars Deep Purple Masters from the Vault.......2006-01-01

This is vintage footage, however, it is not worth the money to buy it. One song has Ian Gilliam smashed and forgetting the words! If you really like Deep Purple, don't even think of getting this video.

5 out of 5 stars Historical moment of the band - great moments!.......2005-08-23

    I gave this 4.5 stars.
I know that if i put this dvd side by side near new meterials (new sound /picture qaulity and new standarts- longer dvd and ...
(it might get less stars if we compare it to new meterials) .
i wasn`t their fan when i first saw this show (one of them - in the tv - and there was only 4 tracks on it (Speed King, Child in Time, Wring That Neck, and Mandrake Root).i recorded those tracks on vhs and have them thil now).
I always try to get this. this show has great moment on it and ritchie blackmore shows there his talent AND only later i become their fan. I think you shouldn`t compare this show to any new meterials . this is a historical moments and has great tracks on it. if i compare this dvd to the old vhs we got in the 80'
this is 5 star dvd. So you can`t compare it to their new dvd`s out there and even not to the new dvd they release this year ( 72- 73 shows that is newer and much better ...)
i reviewed this because i thought to my self it deserve much more respect then amazon`s reviewer gave ( it not deserve 3 stars for sure ) and i wasn`t their fan in those days .
I want to show you the other side- you get those 4 tracks with bonus meterials . they put with those 4 tracks more 3 tracks they released as Ep!!!(No No No, Highway Star and Hallelujah).
( we can see the positive side of it)
FOR the older fan of you this is must have!

    3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2005-08-12

Pretty good dvd... but it could have used a lot more footage. Only buy it if your a big deep purple fan.

2 out of 5 stars Little Richie Blackmore footage.......2005-07-27

I am a Deep Purple fan, and have been for many years. This sounds like a great DVD - old concert material of Mark II, arguably the seminal lineup. One of the big Deep Purple concert attractions, and an undoubted focal point of the band, was Richie Blackmore, playing as few guitarists, if any, can. But I was extremely disappointed to find that in the B&W section, there is precious little footage of the erstwhile RB. As an example, during the entire Highway Star guitar solo, the camera remains resolutely fixed on Gillan and Glover - go figure! The sound and film quality are certainly very good for the age of the concerts featured; the monochrome film is not an issue (not for me anyway), and it is Deep Purple after all, so I can at least give this DVD 2 stars. The New York concert film is better, but this is only a relatively small part of the package. If you are a big Mark 11 fan, and want older Deep Purple concert footage regardless, then you will find plenty to enjoy in this DVD and it has some merit. However, Richie Blackmore and guitar fans should think very carefully before purchasing, as they could be disappointed in this aspect of the DVD.
