Better than the Prior reviewer gives it credit for..........2007-09-04
Here in the Western Hemisphere we (collectively as a people) have a mis-conception about animation. When whe hear the term 'Animation' we immediately think 'childish' or 'kids-stuff', well this simply is not the case... never has been.
YES most animation in the past 30 years has been geared towards children; but what about the great shorts that pre-ceded the cinimatic features of yesteryear? Geared towards adults. Much of the humour in old Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry cartoons is lost on the young or has been censored out.
Rock 'n' Rule is an animated movie that attempts to bridge that old schizm. No, it's not perfect... but it is damn good. The music DOES fit and it is a single coherent story.
The animation is great..........2007-04-25
I suppose that this was Canada's attempt to repeat the success of Heavy Metal. Unfortunately, Rock and Rule falls quite short of HM's status. The songs are supplied by certified geniuses, Rick Nielsen/Cheap Trick, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop, but all of these artists were at a nadir at the time of this movie. While their worst songs are still much better than most artists' best songs, those used in the movie just aren't great and they don't fit into the movie really well. It is hard to determine if the songs were meant to relay plot aspects or are merely background mood setters. The lone exception is Lou's "My Name is Mok", perhaps the highlight of the film.
Basically, Mok is a super rocker who wants to bring in a demon from another dimension but needs a voice of specific timbre to make it happen. If that sounds cheesy, you should hear the dialog. The "humor" is sophomoric and most adults will find the script asinine. After all, the characters are mutated rats, cats and dogs (though I can't tell which are which). I guess I was in a different mind frame 20 years ago when I first watch this film. That being said, fans of REAL animation will probably enjoy it. No annoying CGI here! The animation and "My Name is Mok", coupled with nostalgia, are the reasons that I can warrant the three stars. For better plot lines and music, check out HM or American Pop.

This installment of the Classic Albums series follows the making of two Grateful Dead albums, the fiercely experimental Anthem of the Sun and the understated masterwork American Beauty, which spawned melodic gems like "Sugar Magnolia" and "Ripple." Between the archival scenes and contemporary interviews with band members, the DVD shows a band making seismic inroads in pop music--and five young guys coming to terms with artistry, mortality, and, yes, the pursuit of happiness. There is priceless footage of Neal Cassady driving Ken Kesey's bus and of the Dead, surrounded by martini-sipping hipsters, on Playboy After Dark. The best scenes involve band members talking about specific songs (you will never hear Phil Lesh's "Box of Rain" again without thinking of it as a gift to his dying father) or deconstructing a tune by playing each track separately. Intimate and surprisingly cohesive, Anthem to Beauty is a rare glimpse into how the Dead's magic was made. --Anne Hurley
Description
This program looks at the span of the Grateful Dead's music from 1968's "ANTHEM OF THE SUN", which was a hybrid of a live and studio album, and the 1970 country-styled album "AMERICAN BEAUTY". The story is told through new and vintage interviews with band members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, and Mickey Hart, guest musicians, and lyricist Robert Hunter, along with home movies from the Grateful Dead's own archive. Features many classic Dead tunes including: "Truckin'", Mountains Of The Moon", "Sugar Magnolia", and "Box Of Rain".
Customer Reviews:
Great DVD for any Dead fan!.......2005-12-23
I was spellbound by this when I got it. Great archvial footage, interviews with the band, and just a great look at their transformation from Anthem of the Sun to American Beauty (hence the title). Includes live footage, studio footage, and them talking about track layers, and how a lot of the songs came together (including Robert Hunter talking about his inspiration with a lot of classic songs). I especially loved when Robert Hunter talked about going to London for the first time and the songs that came from his first few hours there (hint: Ripple is one of them!) Pick this up, light up and kick back. Heartwarming.
New to Grateful Dead.......2005-11-27
This DVD gives a good idea of what the band was about from 1968-1970, The DVD format is strange and is hard to play on my DVD players.
good but not great.......2005-09-03
great classic footage with some cool interviews.
didnt like the liberal use of "the grateful dead movie"
footage mixed with music that was not from that era of the dead.
Intelligent Documentary- A Must for DeadHeads.......2005-05-08
I saw this years ago on PBS and was thrilled to find it on DVD. This is a great inside look at the Dead and the process they went through recording Anthem of the Sun and American beauty. Amusing and enlightening interviews with band members and others involved in the scene and some great performance footage makes this an absolute joy to watch. Anyone who loves the Dead will love owning this video.
From an old Dead Fan.......2005-01-28
I laughed out loud quite a few times while watching this superb DVD; nearly cried once or twice. The music, of course, is excellent, and my foot was tapping throughout. Great footage & storytelling of the Grateful Dead's earlier years.
I was pleasantly surpised by this disc!

Good DVD.......2007-05-17
I agree it could have been better, but anything can be better. You just have to enjoy if you have it at hand. The DVD is well filmed, with very good sound, good closeups of the bands and audience. An eclectic selection of bands that is fun to play when you are with people with differing tastes. You just serve the drinks when Robbie Williams is in the screen.
I watch it often.......2006-12-11
more than half of the performances are quite good...a few are excellent and a few are junk. I'm not sure what's up with those who seem to hate this collection...along with the "Later" Jools Holland series of DVD's this one is a standard in my collection when I'm in the mood for a bit of a Brit Rock/Pop experience.
Where is Oasis?.......2005-08-17
This DVD does not hold up with nothing from Oasis on here. The best British band left off the biggest British Festival DVD. Does not make any sense to me. Who cares about Robbie Williams and Blur.
Glasonbury Snoozefestival a.k.a BORING!.......2005-07-09
I am disappointed with this collection not just because it's just a marginal collection of artists (Fun Lovin' Criminals?...come on! Who picked these?) but because of how great it could have been if some thought and effort was put behind it. Though I have never been to a Glastonbury festival, I have been reading about them for years and have heard many radio broadcasts. So many lengendary performances. It seemed that this was the place for bands to really shine. Unfortunately this collection dosen't capture any of that magic. The majority of the artists performances shown are from the 2000-2004 range with only a couple from the 1994-1999 area. Not only did they do a bad job choosing the artists, they also did a poor job of selecting the songs. Maybe they only had rights to certain songs, but the songs they chose where NOT the artists best. This Is A Low by Blur was hardly considerd an anthem ... especially since they all looked either bored or sleepy. It was a good thing that this was placed at the end of the running order as it was making me bored and sleepy too. They could have called this Glasonbury Snoozefestival. Where is Pulp? Where are the Charlatains (UK) Where is Oasis?
The extras are OK, but I would have loved to have seen more artist bios and performance information (Set lists, other artists that performed that year, etc.) There wasn't even a booklet included with this DVD.
Franz Ferdidnand - Matinee (2004) A good choice to start it off as they are one of the "buzz bands" right now and do put on a pretty good show. This was one of the better performances.
Travis - Driftwood (2000) Pick up either Travis: Live At The Palace or Travis: More Than Us (Live at Glasto) from their 2001 appearance. Both of these have far superior performances with the 2001 Glasto show as their top of the world moment.
Faithless - We Come 1 (2002) A mostly slow performance of a powerful song. I did like this song and it was fun to see the audience participation.
Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life (1999) Mostly unknown in the U.S. This performance was pretty stellar. As there are no other DVDs available for the Manics this was a pretty good introduction to their live output.
Moby - Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad (2000) There are so many great songs from Moby's 1999 Play album. It would have been nice to have seen something with a little more energy.
Robbie Williams - Angels (1998) I am not a fan. I have seen some better performances where he looks a little more lively. Here he just punches in, punches out a performance with minimal exertion and maximum reliance on audience participation and back up band.
Supergrass - Pumping On Your Stereo (2003) This was one of the few tracks that was really pretty good. The crowd was in to it, the band was in to it... it's a great song. Good choice. I'd love to see more.
Ash - Shining Light (2002) Good song and a good choice for this collection.
Levelers - One Way (1994) An interesting choice for this collection but I don't think it fits it well. It's sort of odd to go from Ash to this to Primal Scream. Not very good placement in the running order. It wouldn't have been in my top 50 songs or artists to include.
Primal Scream - Rocks (2003) A beyond their prime performance. Boring and painful to watch.
The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl (2000) A great dance song... a boring performance. This is essentially a 7+ minute clip of flashing lights and camera close ups of the video that was running behind the performance... repeated over and over and over...
Basement Jaxx - Good Luck (2004) Again, not the song or performance I would have picked. They have much better songs form that set they could have chosen... Where's Your Head At... Romeo.. etc.
Coldplay - Yellow (2002) If any song could fall into the "anthem" category this one would be it. It has everything: the audience that sings along, the energy in the band and a pretty decent song. We've all heard it a million times, but this performance it still seems fresh. Fun to watch.
Fun Lovin' Criminals - Scooby Snacks (1999) Awful!
The Prodigy - Breathe (1997) Their "act" becomes transparent in this performance. A good selection to represent the band, but not one of my personal favorites.
Blur - This Is A Low (1994) Boring! THis band had some stellar performances and some really GREAT songs... this is not one of them.
Placebo - The Crawl (1998) Another lackluster performance.
Radiohead - Karma Police (1997) This is another pretty good selection. I would have thought something with a little more energy would have been more approperate, but it's not a bad choice.
Paul McCartney - Hey Jude (2004) You can't go wrong with an ex-Beatle. Paul's tradional show closer seems to be nearing the "ok, we've seen it" stage, but still comes off as pretty powerful. Paul change up your set list for your next tour.
All in all a pretty poor collection. Save your money and search out better performances by your favorite artists.

Description
The Grateful Dead are a unique phenomenon. One of the most successful live touring bands in the world, their longevity is founded on their desire to play music their way, coupled with an extraordinarily close relationship to their huge following. From Anthem to Beauty tells the story of the band and their journey from the experimental "Anthem of the Sun" (recorded in 1967/1968) to the accessible, countryish "American Beauty." It is told in the band's own words and includes a rare interview with lyricist Robert Hunter. The film also features a wealth of rare vintage film footage of the Grateful Dead in their prime, including television appearances, home videos, and classic recordings like "Ripple," "Box of Rain," "Truckin'," and "Mountains of the Moon," and it all adds up to a riveting portrait of one of the rock world's most controversial bands. 75 minutes.

All live, some not even pro shot !!!.......2007-06-15
I buy all metal DVDs. I have a wall full of them. This is the worst one I ever bought. Why ? 21 songs, only four are video clips. I actually own most of the DVDs these live clips come from ( Poison live with Ritchie Kotzen, the Cinderella live DVD, Motorhead Stagefright, even Accept - I have their live DVD ).
Speaking of which, the Accept song has got a voice over through it, and that DVD has the clip, which they could have used instead !!!
Artists like Anthrax and Poison ( OK, I have all their clips on DVD anyhow ), are not even the original band that released the song included.
At least two of these songs were recorded by a fan with a video camera in the audience, in the later years of the band. At least 3 others look like they were lifted of VHS taped from the TV in 1990.
The point of this compilation is to give you some songs from a number of live DVDs that DeadLine release. Nowhere do they claim these songs are the original video clips, but it's implied, in my book, and low quality, the usual mix of good and bad songs to start with, and the fact that most of these are live, makes this a total ripoff in my book.

Consistant.......2004-05-25
I won't go into the bloody details of this album. If you're even reading this you've probably already got a good idea of what Anthem sounds like. I managed to find Bound To Break a while back on cd, and that's by far my favorite anthem album. Every song but one could be rated as incredible, 5 out of 5 stars, and other I'd rate as 4. I also have Hunting Time, which I'd say has about 5 songs that are awesome, and about half are only so-so. I'd say that Gypsy Ways is not as good as Bound To Break, but better than Hunting Time, and I would definitley reccomend Gypsy ways to anybody who has any other anthem album because it is definitlely a great Anthem album and if you like Anthem, then for sure you'll like this. Great song structure, AWESOME guitar solos. These guys are great. Rock On.
