Product Description

Herb Ellis, the late Tal Farlow, and Charlie Byrd exemplify the breadth of American jazz. These elder statesmen of the guitar shared well over a century of combined knowledge and experience with styles covering a vast spectrum of the music, from straight-ahead swing and be-bop to bossa nova and beyond. The thread that bound these radically different players was their debt to Charlie Christian, the first electric jazz guitarist and the common inspiration for their lifelong dedication to musical excellence. Billed as the Great Guitars, a performance by this remarkable group offered a crash course in the history of jazz guitar. Selection include: Seven Come Eleven; Angel Eyes; and many more.

that is a document of three legends of the jazz guitar but this should have been recorded at least 10 years before it was done, while they were still able to play decently.

1 out of 5 stars Only 25 minutes of rehashed material, this should be given away free to help sell the original DVDs.......2006-12-31

I think it was a good idea to put together some of the highlights from the original DVDs of these players. This could have been great. However, they did a really poor job putting these together and they were very cheap about it --the instructional part of the video is just over 25 minutes of content. That sucks! Most of the original videos are at least 45 minutes. They could have expanded this quite a bit more and made it worth buying.

The actual content is good, though I think that Brian Setzer's segment should not have been in this "Jazz Guitar" DVD, but rather in a blues/rock DVD. He was definitely out of place after Joe Diorio and Emily Remler. Regardless of the content, this DVD is just a sampler and should be about 5-10 bucks max, or free to help sell all the original content --most of which I own/have seen and it is very good. That they want to charge as much as a full length DVD makes this a total rip off.

1 out of 5 stars Another thrown together piece of trash.......2006-04-04

This video producer thought they could squeeze musicians by slapping together parts of other videos. Steer clear this series is pure trash.

1 out of 5 stars slapped together - VERY short.......2006-04-04

39 minutes for 6 segments. once you figure in transitions that is 5 minutes per segment. And the segments are pretty thin. A bit of info on substitutions. The tabs book is VERY thin and very little of the video is transcribed. Try Jimmy Bruno's No Nonsense Jazz Guitar it has a fat tabs book, is way longer, and it fits together instead of just throwing parts of several videos together like this piece of trash.
Over all a RIP OFF

4 out of 5 stars This will really expand your imagination and vocabulary.......2006-03-24

If you are tired of playing the same stuff and hearing yourself play the same stuff. You should get this DVD. It really expanded the way I thought about chords and showed me some new ideas of how to approaching chording differently. Joe Pass will blow your mind! The DVD can get a little irritating on some parts, because some of the musicians don't have diagrams that go along with what they are demonstrating. So get your pause finger ready. It is well worth it. It brought me out of a musical rut. You might be able to make some musical connections with this DVD. Give it a try.
